A Multistage Framework For Detection Of Very Small Objects, Duleep Rathgamage Don, Ramazan Aygun, Mahmut Karakaya Jan 2023

A Multistage Framework For Detection Of Very Small Objects, Duleep Rathgamage Don, Ramazan Aygun, Mahmut Karakaya

Published and Grey Literature from PhD Candidates

Small object detection is one of the most challenging problems in computer vision. Algorithms based on state-of-the-art object detection methods such as R-CNN, SSD, FPN, and YOLO fail to detect objects of very small sizes. In this study, we propose a novel method to detect very small objects, smaller than 8×8 pixels, that appear in a complex background. The proposed method is a multistage framework consisting of an unsupervised algorithm and three separately trained supervised algorithms. The unsupervised algorithm extracts ROIs from a high-resolution image. Then the ROIs are upsampled using SRGAN, and the enhanced ROIs are detected by our …

Entropy-Driven Structural Transition From Tetragonal To Cubic Phase: High Thermoelectric Performance Of Cucdinse3 Compound, Tingting Luo, Yihao Hu, Shi Liu, Fanjie Xia, Junhao Qiu, Haoyang Peng, Keke Liu, Quansheng Guo, Xingzhong Li, Dongwang Yang, Xianli Su, Jinsong Wu, Xinfeng Tang

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

Cu based chalcopyrite is an important class of thermoelectric materials with excellent electronic properties, however, the thermal conductivity is relatively high due to the simple tetragonal structure with highly ordered configuration on cation sites, limiting the thermoelectric performance. Herein, we realize that the modulation of entropy via alloying CdSe achieves the structural transition from tetragonal structure with ordered configuration on cations sites in CuInSe2 compound to cubic CuCdInSe3. CuCdInSe3 crystallizes in a zinc blende (ZnS) structure where Cu, Cd and In cations randomly occupy the Zn site with the occupancy fraction 1/3. This entropy driven order-disorder …

Applications Of Newton's Laws To Variable Mass Systems, Micah Kienzle Jan 2023

Applications Of Newton's Laws To Variable Mass Systems, Micah Kienzle

Theses & ETDs

We develop a pedagogical framework for treating variable mass systems in classical mechanics with the aim of explaining the difference between two rope systems: a rope sliding off a table versus falling from a coil. We have seen that energy is conserved in the former, but not the latter, and we explore this difference in several ways. We explicitly solve for the dynamics of both systems using energy conservation and momentum analysis before employing the Cauchy continuum equation to explore discontinuities in tension profiles as a source of inelasticity, leading us to explicitly compute the energy loss in the second …

Through A Christian Lens: The Power Of Music Videos To Rock And Shock. An Analysis Of Gender Identity And Queerness Through The Music Videos Of Lady Gaga, Lil Nas X And Lucina Wolf-Brown, Lucina Wolf Brown Jan 2023

Through A Christian Lens: The Power Of Music Videos To Rock And Shock. An Analysis Of Gender Identity And Queerness Through The Music Videos Of Lady Gaga, Lil Nas X And Lucina Wolf-Brown, Lucina Wolf Brown

Theses & ETDs

American popular culture, especially American popular music, is a dominant source of media, both as entertainment and information, for much of the world. As such, the more recent genre of music videos, combining songs with visual storytelling, has added to the power of popular music to make lasting and oftentimes controversial statements through this combination of audio and images, especially by adopting and claiming symbols and themes commonly found outside the popular music realm and associated with seemingly unrelated audiences and values. This thesis will compare the “sacrilegious” music videos of Lady Gaga and Lil Nas X to analyze and …

Do We Think Together When We Move Together? The Neural Underpinnings Of Interpersonal Coordination, Tatiana Pillsbury Jan 2023

Do We Think Together When We Move Together? The Neural Underpinnings Of Interpersonal Coordination, Tatiana Pillsbury

Theses & ETDs

Cooperation is necessary to succeed in numerous settings, including sports, business, and the creative arts. Essential to cooperation between two people is effectively coordinating motor movements. However, there is still a lack of understanding of the neural activation patterns of interpersonal coordination and its connection to task performance outcomes. The purpose of this study is to investigate the neural foundation of interpersonal coordinated movement between individuals and associated interpersonal brain synchronization (IBS) by using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) hyperscanning techniques to measure the level of brain activity in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and the right temporal parietal junction (rTPJ) region. …

Redex A Proof Of Concept Scripting Language In Rust., Ender Fluegge Jan 2023

Redex A Proof Of Concept Scripting Language In Rust., Ender Fluegge

Theses & ETDs

The implementation of a functional programming language from a drafted syntax is an ambitious undertaking. The average programming language functions with a series of interconnected components, all working sequentially to be able to execute a program. Most scripting languages exist in three major components; A lexer to convert characters into tokens that can be recognized, a parser that can derive meaning and associations from the provided tokens, and a runtime to execute the associations in the form of an AST (Abstract Syntax Tree) generated by the parser. The language I created, Redex, tackles programming language development with a syntax that’s …

Fashion Confronts The Gender Binary: Unisex, Androgynous, And Queer Approaches In Contemporary Genderless Fashion, Jordan Grubbs Jan 2023

Fashion Confronts The Gender Binary: Unisex, Androgynous, And Queer Approaches In Contemporary Genderless Fashion, Jordan Grubbs

Theses & ETDs

The rise in everyday feminism and other social justice movements over the past decade has resulted in an ever-widening call, aided by social media, to revolutionize representation in fashion. Similar to the 1960s and 70s emergence of unisex and androgynous fashion alongside the Women’s Liberation Movement, the contemporary fashion industry – particularly highfashion – is attempting to accompany and encourage gender revolution today. This thesis will examine three of the most popular industry approaches to circumventing traditional gendered expectations and perceptions of dress. Chapter One, entitled “Unisex Fashion: Removing Gender from the Equation,” calls attention to a unisex approach to …

Play It For Me. A Study In Melodic Password Usability, Robert Kleszczynski Jan 2023

Play It For Me. A Study In Melodic Password Usability, Robert Kleszczynski

Theses & ETDs

In today's age, we find ourselves required to create accounts to manage more and more of our services. To keep these accounts secure, we typically need to manage a collection of different passwords to be able to sign in to our accounts. However, remembering and managing a large number of different passwords is a difficult task for the average user. This makes it evident that there is a need to come up with something that serves as a viable alternative to managing multiple passwords. This paper reports on the usability of passwords constructed from notes and melodies rather than alphanumeric …

An Analysis Of Emotion Recognition And Attentional Biases In Montessori Teachers, Non-Montessori Teachers, And Non-Teachers, Alyssa Boynton Jan 2023

An Analysis Of Emotion Recognition And Attentional Biases In Montessori Teachers, Non-Montessori Teachers, And Non-Teachers, Alyssa Boynton

Theses & ETDs

Previous literature has found that emotion recognition is essential to how we respond to others; that people after the age of about 12 months focus longer on negative faces than happy ones (a negative attentional bias); and that Montessori students see more surprise in ambiguous faces, see less fear in ambiguous faces, and are more likely to look longer at happy faces (a positive attentional bias) than children in traditional public schools. However, only one study has investigated this difference between Montessori and non-Montessori students, and little is known about the potential differences between and impact of teachers. The current …

Flow state in an experience of total engagement in an activity that is enjoyable in and of itself. Individuals can experience flow state alone or in groups in countless types of activities, ranging from everyday conversations to athletic competitions and creative endeavors. The current study investigated how the characteristics of creative flow state, a type of flow state in creative activities, differ from the nine core dimensions of flow state established by previous research. Using a qualitative research method, six participants were interviewed in audio-only, virtual meetings about their experiences of creative flow state. Each interview was audio-recorded and transcribed. …

Gender Bias In The Music Industry: A Study Of Favoritism And Implicit Bias, Karsyn Prescott Jan 2023

Gender Bias In The Music Industry: A Study Of Favoritism And Implicit Bias, Karsyn Prescott

Theses & ETDs

This thesis investigates gender-based favoritism in the music industry and its impact on social and occupational recognition. The study utilizes a stereotype content model to analyze value designations between genders, and the Favoritism Survey to assess gender preferences in musical artist ranking. Results show no significant association between favoritism for male artists and implicit bias, but suggest that men may be more likely to rank female artists lower than male artists. These findings suggest a measurable effect of gender norms and stereotypes on music industry perceptions, particularly for in-group members. Future research should investigate the limitations of the measures used …

Optimal Management And Sizing For Battery Energy Storage Systems For Grid Applications, Abdullah Muslih Alharbi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Battery energy storage systems (BESSs) play a dominant role in the reliability, resiliency, economics, and operational flexibility of the power grid. As such, the BESS is a promising and reliable green technology for supporting power grid facilities. However, the integration of BESS technology into power projects can be expensive and challenging, both technologically and in terms of regulation compliance. Thus, it is necessary to examine best practices for fully optimizing BESS sizing, operation, and scheduling in the context of benefiting BESS operators and investors by fully exploiting the valuable economic and technical benefits of BESSs. In this research, we identify …

History’S Pathologists: Oswald Spengler, Jacques Barzun, John Lukacs And The Dying Of The West, Michael A. Flannery Jan 2023

History’S Pathologists: Oswald Spengler, Jacques Barzun, John Lukacs And The Dying Of The West, Michael A. Flannery

Libraries Professional Work

This essay explores the perceived weakening and even possible collapse of Western Civilization as seen through the eyes of three prominent historians: Oswald Spengler, Jacques Barzun, and John Lukacs. Each of them has provoked controversy due to their pathologies of the West and their conclusion that its vital signs (identified as religion, science, and education), suggest a sick and possibly dying patient. All three developed metahistories that led, in Dermot Quinn’s words, to “that architecture of greater meaning by which historical facts make themselves intelligible.” That is to say, beyond their specific historical narratives, each made use of a wider …
