Theosis In The Book Of Mormon: The Work And Glory Of The Father, Mother And Son, And Holy Ghost, Val Larsen, Newell D. Wright Jan 2023

Theosis In The Book Of Mormon: The Work And Glory Of The Father, Mother And Son, And Holy Ghost, Val Larsen, Newell D. Wright

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

While some scholars have suggested that the doctrine of theosis — the transformation of human beings into divine beings — emerged only in Nauvoo, the essence of the doctrine was already present in the Book of Mormon, both in precept and example. The doctrine is especially well developed in 1 Nephi, Alma 19, and Helaman 5. The focus in 1 Nephi is on Lehi and Nephi’s rejection of Deuteronomist reforms that erased the divine Mother and Son, who, that book shows, are closely coupled as they, the Father, and Holy Ghost work to transform human beings into divine beings. The …

Jwst/Nirspec Measurements Of The Relationships Between Nebular Emission-Line Ratios And Stellar Mass At Z ∼ 3–6, Alice E. Shapley, Naveen Reddy, Ryan L. Sanders, Michael W. Topping, Gabriel B. Brammer

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We analyze the rest-optical emission-line ratios of star-forming galaxies at 2.7 ≤ z < 6.5 drawn from the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) Survey and their relationships with stellar mass (M *). Our analysis includes both line ratios based on the [N ii] λ6583 feature ([N ii] λ6583/Hα, ([O iii] λ5007/Hβ)/([N ii] λ6583/Hα) (O3N2), and [N ii] λ6583/[O ii] λ3727) and those featuring α-elements ([O iii] λ5007/Hβ, [O iii] λ5007/[O ii] λ3727 (O32), ([O iii] λλ4959, 5007 + [O ii] λ3727)/Hβ (R23), and [Ne iii] λ3869/[O ii] λ3727). Given the typical flux levels of [N ii] λ6583 and [Ne iii] λ3869, which are undetected in the majority of individual CEERS galaxies at 2.7 …

The First Application Of The Luminescence Surface Exposure Dating Method On Active Fault Scarps In The Western Anatolia Extensional Province: The Manisa Fault As An Example, Mustafa Softa, Eren Şahi̇ner, Hasan Sözbi̇li̇r, Joel Qg Spencer, Mehmet Utku, Mehmet Fati̇h Büyüktopcu

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

While there has been significant research on the dating of paleoearthquakes using methods such as surface cosmogenic dating, and trench-based luminescence or radiocarbon dating, this paper focuses on implementing an alternative surface dating method using a fault scarp-based optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating approach. Hence for the first time, we investigated the Pleistocene to Holocene earthquake cycle of the Manisa Fault, one of the dip-slip active faults of the Western Anatolia extensional province, utilizing novel OSL surface exposure techniques. In this technique, OSL bleaching profiles on the fault surface are directly related to the exposure of the fresh fault scarps …

Lithological Mapping Of Ophiolitic Rocks From Southern Part Of The Sivas Basin (Turkey) Using Aster Imagery, Taner Eki̇ci̇ Jan 2023

Lithological Mapping Of Ophiolitic Rocks From Southern Part Of The Sivas Basin (Turkey) Using Aster Imagery, Taner Eki̇ci̇

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The east-west extended Sivas Basin in central-eastern Anatolia is a foreland basin that formed after the obduction of the Tethyan ophiolite during the late Cretaceous and is also a north-verging fold-and-thrust belt. The basement rocks of the basin represent mainly sedimentary (Mesozoic platform-type carbonates) and late Cretaceous Divriği ophiolitic complex. As the ophiolitic rocks are affected by intense tectonic processes, field-based mapping studies require long processes and costs. The study tests to reveal the lithological features of the ophiolitic complex outcropping around the Ulaş district of the Sivas Province using remote sensing methods and techniques. Due to arid climatic conditions …

New Geodetic Constraints On The Role Of Faults And Blocks Vs. Distribute Strain In The Nubia-Arabia-Eurasia Zone Of Active Plate Interactions, Semi̇h Ergi̇ntav, Michael Floyd, Demitris Paradissis, Hayrullah Karabulut, Philippe Vernant, Frederic Masson, Ivan Georgiev, Ali̇ Özgün Konca, Uğur Doğan, Robert King, Robert Reilinger

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

We present a broad view of present-day motions and deformations derived from uniform processing of GNSS observations within the Nubia-Arabia-Eurasia zone of plate interaction. The new observations we present provide a ~29% increase in the number of velocity determinations, a reduction in average station spacing from ~76 km to ~39 km, and an improvement in velocity uncertainties (for < 1 mm/year), from 180 to 578 sites compared to our prior published solution (Reilinger et al., 2006). We use these new constraints to better evaluate the role of faults and blocks in controlling the character of continental deformation within the zone of plate interactions. Simple elastic block models show that internal deformation of the region occurs in large part on mapped, seismically active fault systems, indicating elastic behavior of the seismogenic crust (above ~15 km). For example, eastern central Anatolia, an area of > ~126,000 km2, bounded by the North and East Anatolian Faults exhibits internal velocity differences of < 0.5 mm/year, indicating strain rates of < ~1.5 nanostrain/year. Geodetically constrained fault slip rates obtained from this simplified approach are comparable to geologic rates, indicating that major faults have controlled the recent geologic evolution of the region (i.e. 5?10 Myr). The pattern of present-day deformation, including increasingly fast motions towards the Hellenic trench, and the roughly simultaneous opening of all the major Mediterranean basins in the early Miocene with the slowing of the Nubia-Eurasia convergence, support conceptual models that foundering and rollback of the subducted Nubian slab beneath the Aegean is the primary mechanism responsible for present-day motion and internal deformation of the Anatolian-Aegean region.

Geological Structure Informs Rupture Propagation And Surface Rupture Complexity During The 2016 Kaik?Ura Earthquake, New Zealand: Insights For Future Large Earthquake Hazard, Kelvin Berryman, Mark Rattenbury, Stephen Bannister, Susan Ellis, Pilar Villamor, Donna Eberhart-Phillips, Phaedra Upton, Andrew Howell Jan 2023

Geological Structure Informs Rupture Propagation And Surface Rupture Complexity During The 2016 Kaik?Ura Earthquake, New Zealand: Insights For Future Large Earthquake Hazard, Kelvin Berryman, Mark Rattenbury, Stephen Bannister, Susan Ellis, Pilar Villamor, Donna Eberhart-Phillips, Phaedra Upton, Andrew Howell

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

We summarise the geological setting of complex surface rupture of the 2016 Mw 7.8 Kaik?ura earthquake in the Marlborough Tectonic Domain of New Zealand. The event was complex both seismologically and geologically but not totally dissimilar to other large historical events globally. The earthquake occurred in the comprehensively imbricated, steeply-dipping Pahau Terrane crust that exhibits numerous tectonic overprints with diverse faulting styles. The current strike slip faults of the Marlborough Fault System are immature in their structural development and occupy, at least in part, inherited faults of earlier deformation phases. Several of the faults that ruptured in 2016 may connect …

Paleoseismology Of The Ganos Segment; The Western Extend Of The North Anatolian Fault (Turkey), Murat Ersen Aksoy, Mustapha Meghraoui, Matthieu Ferry, Zi̇yadi̇n Çakir, Gülsen Uçarkuş, Taylan Sançar, Mehmet Uğur Altin

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Ganos fault that ruptured on 9 August 1912 (Mw: 7.4) is the westernmost inland segment of the North Anatolian fault (NAF). Here, the Ganos fault is bounded at its two tips with offshore faults segments, in the Sea of Marmara to the east and the Gulf of Saros to the west in the North Aegean Trough. Therefore, the paleoseismology of the 45-km-long inland fault is of importance to the seismic hazard analysis related to offshore active faults and in particular for the seismic gap in the Marmara Region. Earlier studies have established an earthquake chronology for the western and …

Paleoseismology Of The Sürgü And Çardak Faults - Splays Of The Eastern Anatolian Fault Zone, Türkiye, Musa Balkaya, Hüsnü Serdar Akyüz, Süha Özden Jan 2023

Paleoseismology Of The Sürgü And Çardak Faults - Splays Of The Eastern Anatolian Fault Zone, Türkiye, Musa Balkaya, Hüsnü Serdar Akyüz, Süha Özden

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The sinistral East Anatolian Fault Zone (EAFZ) and the dextral North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ) are two important strike-slip faults that delimit the boundaries of the Anatolian plate. The north-south directed compressional forces in eastern Türkiye trigger the westward escape of the Anatolian plate along these prominent structures. This study aims to reveal the earthquake history of the Sürgü and Çardak faults, which are important fault segments that splay from the EAFZ. In this context, overall, four paleoseismologic trenches were dug, two trenches on the Sürgü Fault and two trenches on the Çardak Fault. Along the Sürgü Fault, at least …

Land Subsidence Due To Natural Gas Extraction In The Thrace Basin (Nw Turkey) And Its Influence On The North Anatolian Fault Under The Marmara Sea, Tohid Nozadkhalil, Zi̇yadi̇n Çakir, Semi̇h Ergi̇ntav, Uğur Doğan, Thomas R. Walter Jan 2023

Walter

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

We map surface deformation in the Thrace region of Turkey using the Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data. Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) time series analysis of the SAR data acquired between 2014 and 2020 on ascending and descending orbits reveals large-scale subsidence (~110 × 60 km) with rates reaching up to 10 ± 1.5 mm/yr. We relate this deformation to natural gas reservoir operations, such as gas exploitation and extraction activities that have been taking place in the region for decades, an inference being supported by the strong correlation between the InSAR time series and the variation in natural …

Hunting has been crucial in early human evolution. Some San (Bushmen) of southern Africa still practice their indigenous hunting. The use of poisons is one remarkable aspect of their bow-and-arrow hunting but the sources, taxonomic identifications of species used, and recipes, are not well documented. This study reports on fieldwork to investigate recent indigenous hunting practices of G/ui and G//ana San communities in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR), Botswana. Here we discuss their use of spider poison. The hunters use the contents of the opisthosoma (‘abdomen’) of a spider as sole ingredient of the arrow poison and discard the …

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Tyrosinase (TYR) plays a key role in the enzymatic reaction that is responsible for a range of unwanted discoloration effects, such as food browning and skin hyperpigmentation. TYR inhibitors could, therefore, be candidates for skin care products that aim to repair pigmentation problems. In this study, we used a metabolomics approach combined with the isobologram analysis to identify anti-TYR compounds within natural resources, and evaluate their possible synergism with each other. Rheum palmatum was determined to be a model plant for observing the effect, of which seven extracts with diverse phytochemicals were prepared by way of pressurized solvent extraction. Each …

My Encounters With Paradise: The Evolution Of Natural Beauty And Luminist Aesthetics In Central Florida, Jeremy Laplanche Jan 2023

My Encounters With Paradise: The Evolution Of Natural Beauty And Luminist Aesthetics In Central Florida, Jeremy Laplanche

Honors Program Theses

Historically, the marshes and swamps of Central Florida have been depicted as a paradise in artwork by naturalists such as William Bartram and Luminist landscape painters like Martin Johnson Heade. Today, the image of Florida’s tourism centers around theme parks and beaches. However, state parks in Central Florida preserve and restore unique ecosystems. This thesis analyzes the effectiveness of Wekiwa Springs State Park and Blue Spring State Park’s management practices for maintaining the Luminist and naturalist aesthetics. Previous research has identified the role of landscape paintings, particularly from the Hudson River School and the American West, in establishing America’s appreciation …

A Machine Learning Approach To Deepfake Detection, Delaney Conrad Jan 2023

A Machine Learning Approach To Deepfake Detection, Delaney Conrad

All Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

The ability to manipulate videos has been around for decades but a process that once would take time, money, and professionals, can now be created by anyone due to the rapid advancement of deepfake technology. Deepfakes use deep learning artificial intelligence to make fake digital content, typically in the form of swapping a person’s face in a video or image. This technology could easily threaten and manipulate individuals, corporations, and political organizations, so it is essential to find methods for detecting deepfakes. As the technology for creating deepfakes continues to improve, these manipulated videos are becoming increasingly undetectable. It is …

Use Of Speech Recognition Tools To Predict Mistakes In Audio Book Recordings, Micah Tietz Jan 2023

Use Of Speech Recognition Tools To Predict Mistakes In Audio Book Recordings, Micah Tietz

All Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

This thesis documents the feasibility of creating an automated system to identify mistakes and errors in audiobook performances, with the intent of helping to speed up and streamline the otherwise-lengthy process of audiobook production and editing. The primary method being explored is to compare the intended script with the audio recording of the performance, as evaluated and transcribed by an automatic speech recognition (ASR) system, and to search for discrepancies between the two. Other topics examined include the background and history of audiobooks and ASR systems, the difficulties of creating a bespoke machine-learning system for a specific performer, the strengths …

Potential Effect Of The Proposed R-Project Transmission Line On The Aransas-Wood Buffalo Whooping Crane Population, Jeb A. Barzen, J. Michael Engels, Lisa H. Elliott, Douglas H. Johnson Jan 2023

Potential Effect Of The Proposed R-Project Transmission Line On The Aransas-Wood Buffalo Whooping Crane Population, Jeb A. Barzen, J. Michael Engels, Lisa H. Elliott, Douglas H. Johnson

Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop

Whooping cranes (Grus americana) frequently encounter electrical transmission or distribution lines located throughout most of their range. We estimated the probability of at least 1 whooping crane being killed by colliding with a proposed transmission line (the R-project) planned to cross the primary whooping crane migration corridor in Nebraska. We also estimated the number of individuals that might be killed by the line. We used telemetry data provided by the U.S. Geological Survey and its partners, collected from 2009 to 2018, as well as published data, to estimate: 1) the probability that a migrating whooping crane would stop within the …

Why Fractional Fuzzy, Mehran Mazandarani, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situation, control experts can only formulate their experience by using imprecise ("fuzzy") words from natural language. To incorporate this knowledge in automatic controllers, Lotfi Zadeh came up with a methodology that translate the informal expert statements into a precise control strategy. This methodology -- and its following modifications -- is known as fuzzy control. Fuzzy control often leads to a reasonable control -- and we can get an even better control results by tuning the resulting control strategy on the actual system. There are many parameters that can be changes during tuning, so tuning usually is rather …

Unavailable Genetic Evidence, Multiple Simultaneous Promised Lands, And Lamanites By Location? Possible Ramifications Of The Book Of Mormon Limited Geography Theory, Brian C. Hales

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

This paper is composed of three parts connected consecutively because their conclusions build upon each other. The first part investigates the transportation methods used in the Book of Mormon, concluding that horse and river travel contributed little and that foot travel dominated all journeying. The second part uses that conclusion to estimate the overall dimensions of the Promised Land by examining Alma the Elder’s journey from Nephi to Zarahemla. This exercise reaffirms the 200-by-500-mile size promoted by John L. Sorenson decades ago. The third part looks at four ramifications of this 100,000 square-mile Promised Land footprint when stamped upon a …

“In This Batter’D Caravanserai”, Daniel C. Peterson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, based upon verses composed by an eleventh-century Persian mathematician and astronomer, the English Victorian poet Edward FitzGerald eloquently portrays human life in an indifferent, deterministic universe that lacks any evident purpose and is bereft of divine Providence. The poem’s suggested response to such a universe is an unambitious life of hedonism, distraction, and gentle despair. It is curiously modern, and those considering the adoption of anything like its worldview might want to read it, and to think about its implications, very carefully.
