The Federal Reserve's Mandates, David T. Zaring, Jeffery Y. Zhang

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

Solutions to systemic problems such as climate change and racial inequities have eluded policymakers for decades. In searching for creative solutions, some policymakers have recently thought about expanding the Federal Reserve’s core set of macro-economic mandates to tackle these issues. But there are real questions about whether that can be done from a legal perspective and whether that should be done from a policy perspective.

In this Article, we propose a framework to answer these two questions of “can we” and “should we”—a framework grounded in administrative law and macroeconomics. In Part I, we consider the legal challenges that the …

Current water matrix constituents of concern include traditional pollutants (i.e., total nitrogen and total phosphate), natural organic matters (i.e., total organic carbon (TOC), tannic acid), heavy metals (i.e., copper, calcium), and harmful algae toxins (i.e., microcystin), as well as contaminants …

Impact On Infinite Asteroids: Analysis Of Ejecta Outcomes In Small Body Binary Systems, Jennifer Larson Jan 2023

Impact On Infinite Asteroids: Analysis Of Ejecta Outcomes In Small Body Binary Systems, Jennifer Larson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Binary asteroid systems make up roughly 15% of objects occupying near-Earth space, the Main Belt, and trans-Neptunian space. The impact history of asteroids in binary systems represents an interesting aspect of the general problem pertaining to the nature and evolution of surfaces for such objects. Specifically, the post-impact dynamics of ejecta and its relation to surface modification is a challenging question owing, in part, to the unusual gravitational field in a binary system and the subsequent capture and emplacement of debris on either binary component. Observable differences or similarities between the two bodies in the color, reflectance, thermal properties, and …

To The Cosmos And Back: Modelling Ritualized Movement And Natural Sanctuaries Around The Manialtepec Lagoon, Sami Savateri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Depictions of movement in Late Postclassic and early Colonial Mesoamerican art, maps, and documents show a multi-faceted conception of movement as not only a means of physical travel through the landscape of the mundane world, but also a means to reach the cosmic realms of divine forces. In this thesis, I explored the intersection of movement and ritual in Late Postclassic Oaxaca by modelling a hypothetical ritual circuit around the Manialtepec Lagoon: a bioluminescent lagoon near Oaxaca's Pacific Coast that is significant in oral histories of the Indigenous Chatinos. The Manialtepec Basin lacks the level of continuous occupation or historic …

Extraction Of Cashew Nutshell Liquid From Cashew Nutshells Using The Polyol Induced Extraction (Pie) Method, Ibrahim L. Adewole

All Capstone Projects

Polyol-induced extraction (PIE) is applied to the extraction of cashew nutshell liquid (CNSL) from cashew nutshells using glycerol as a mass-separating agent. In this process, a 1:1 mixture of acetonitrile (ACN) and water (H2O) exists as a completely miscible homogeneous phase. Cashew nutshells are soaked in this mixture at room temperature. After soaking the nutshells in acetonitrile/water, a polyol, glycerol, is added to the mixture, and a phase separation is observed. Upon cooling to –20 °C, the phase separation increases with an acetonitrile-rich top layer containing analytes that are soluble in acetonitrile. Initially, the PIE process was studied with pure …
