Advancing An Integrative Perspective Of Identity In Engineering Education (Chapter 9), James L. Huff Ph.D., Monique S. Ross Ph.D. Jan 2023

Advancing An Integrative Perspective Of Identity In Engineering Education (Chapter 9), James L. Huff Ph.D., Monique S. Ross Ph.D.

Faculty Research and Publications

Existing research has used identity as a theoretical construct to help us understand a wide array of phenomena, such as engagement and persistence in engineering. By understanding the personal, social, and sociocultural forces that operate in the developmental processes of an individual, we understand how they come to make sense of who they are. Further, we come to learn how they position themselves in relation to what it means to be an engineer. However, identity research in engineering education has supported a diffuse set of theoretical perspectives that do not organically coalesce. This chapter advances an integrated conceptualization of engineering …

We are six math teacher educators (MTEs) with different lived experiences and areas of expertise. As critically conscious MTEs, we acknowledge that social, cultural, and political factors impact our noticings (Louie et al., 2021; Seda & Brown, 2021). We believe our differences strengthened this collaborative self-study because our diverse perspectives pushed us to broaden our noticings. We embarked on this collaboration due to a common problem of practice. The preservice mathematics teachers (PSTs) we work with often notice from a narrow or deficit perspective, exclusively attending to only what students say or write, often ignoring valuable embodiment evidence. Our collaborative …

Charity As An Exegetical Principle In The Book Of Mormon, Matthew Scott Stenson Jan 2023

Charity As An Exegetical Principle In The Book Of Mormon, Matthew Scott Stenson

BYU Studies

The eclectic Book of Mormon effectively collapses intellectual and sacred history. Anachronisms have drawn and do currently draw the attention of some Book of Mormon students and researchers. Nicholas J. Frederick, for instance, has written extensively on the presence of New Testament language in the largely pre–Christian Era record. Not all anachronisms are so extensive and involved as those Frederick traces. Some are minor and comparatively unimportant. However, there is a significant and pervasive conceptual anachronism that deserves critical attention. I speak of the primary narrators of the Book of Mormon using faith, hope, and charity (or love) as textual …

The Stewardship Of Our First Freedom, Elder Clark G. Gilbert

BYU Studies

When Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spoke at the University of Oxford’s Pembroke College about the impact of religious freedom on public morality, he charged people of faith to be effective stewards of religious freedom. Elder Cook stated, “There is no better demonstration of the great benefits associated with religious liberty than for devoted members of various faiths who feel accountable to God to model principles of integrity, morality, service, and love.” In this sense, our religious freedom stewardship extends not only to society but …

"Some Of My Best Friends Are Librarians": A Case Study Of Community College Faculty Perceptions And Usage Of The Academic Library, Nancy A. Deegan

Dissertations of Practice

Studies have shown that student use of the academic library’s resources and services contributes towards increased student success indicators. Unfortunately, students tend to avoid using the library unless they are required to do so. Existing literature shows that many faculty members do not incorporate the academic library’s resources and services in their courses even though they claim to have positive feelings about the library and librarians. This qualitative case study explored how ENG102 faculty members at a community college perceive and use the academic library. The findings confirmed that there are contradictions between faculty members’ positive perceptions and limited usage …

Hovering Potato ~ Activity Plan, Admin Stem For Success

STEM for Success Showcase

This experiment is a great example of chemistry. This experiment relies heavily on density and diffusion.

  • Water is less dense than half of a potato. Therefore, the potato sinks.

  • Sugar water is more dense than half of a potato. Therefore, the potato floats.

By slowly adding water to sugar water, two layers are formed which allows the potato to hover in between. Slowly adding the water allows for diffusion to occur at a minimum.

Exploring Ways In Which Teachers Use Low-Cost No-Cost Resources To Develop Learners’ English Language Skills In A Public Primary School In Ilala District In Dar Es Salaam-An Action Research, Hannah Edwin Kimaro

Master of Education

The use of teaching and learning resources by teachers influences the development of the four English language skills. Literature has demonstrated the significance of resources in English classrooms, particularly for English language learners whose first language is not English. In Tanzania, the majority of learners attend public primary schools where the language of instruction is Kiswahili in all subjects except English, and thus the majority of them struggle to achieve the desired level of effective English development even as they progress to secondary school because of their poor English language background. Several factors, including a lack of use of English …

Preparing Preservice Resident Teachers For Equity-Centered Computational Thinking In Stem (Stemect) Education, Jesse Ha, Wei Wei, Kimberley Gomez

Department of Teaching and Learning Scholarship and Creative Works

While computational thinking (CT) in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education has been gaining momentum, there is a shortage of qualified teachers, especially in low-income schools that primarily serve minority students. STEM+C3 seeks to ameliorate the problem by establishing an urban teaching residency program that prepares teaching candidates to integrate CT and equity-centered practices. The project aims to understand the impact of the program on teaching residents and their students' perceptions of equity and CT.

Caring Communities For Radical Change: What Can Feminist Political Ecology Bring To Degrowth?, S. Barca, Giovanna Di Chiro, W. Harcourt, I. Iengo, P. Kotsila, S. Kulkarni, I. Leonardelli, C. Sato

Environmental Studies Faculty Works

In this chapter, we share the insights of feminist political ecology (FPE) for degrowth, building from the debates on “caring communities for radical change” at the 8th International Degrowth Conference in August 2021. We discuss how FPE links to the principles of degrowth as an academic and activist movement and why it is necessary to take feminist political ecology perspectives on care and caring communities in resisting, questioning, and counteracting the structural racial, gender, and wider social inequalities that uphold and are perpetuated by growth-dependent economic systems. As we critically reflect on the experiences of paid versus unpaid, collectivised versus …

Design Of Force Indicator For Ballistic Armor Trauma Pad, William Keenan, Anthony Cinalli, Patrick Kennedy

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The purpose of the Force Indicator for Ballistic Armor Vests is to obtain an approximate value for the impact a bullet delivers through a trauma pad after the Kevlar layer stops the initial bullet. This approximation will be applied in the field to assist in medical treatment of gunshot wounds. The indicator is made from a pressure-sensitive film located behind the Kevlar layer and trauma pad, and it can be easily removed in the field for examination. The impact vest and force indicator are self-contained for ease of implementation. The device will be tested with 9mm, .22 Long Rifle, and …

A Mathematical Model Of Juvenile Delinquency In The New York State, Oluwasegun Micheal Ibrahim Jan 2023

A Mathematical Model Of Juvenile Delinquency In The New York State, Oluwasegun Micheal Ibrahim

Articles

This report presents a mathematical model of juvenile delinquency in the New York State. In particular, we develop a juvenile delinquency system of non-linear differential equations using the mathematical epidemiology framework. In constructing this model, we assume that juvenile delinquency can be studied as a socially infectious disease. The stability of the juvenile delinquency-free equilibrium of the model is examined using the standard non-linear dynamical systems theory technique. We carried out a data fitting based on real-life data from the New York State Criminal Justice Services. The research result reveals that the formulated model conforms with the available data and …

Predation And Harvesting In Spatial Population Models, Connor R. Shrader Jan 2023

Predation And Harvesting In Spatial Population Models, Connor R. Shrader

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Predation and harvesting play critical roles in maintaining biodiversity in ecological communities. Too much harvesting may drive a species to extinction, while too little harvesting may allow a population to drive out competing species. The spatial features of a habitat can also significantly affect population dynamics within these communities. Here, we formulate and analyze three ordinary differential equation models for the population density of a single species. Each model differs in its assumptions about how the species is harvested. We then extend each of these models to analogous partial differential equation models that more explicitly describe the spatial habitat and …

Evolution Of Density And Velocity Perturbations In A Slowly Contracting Universe, Olivia R. Bitcon Jan 2023

Evolution Of Density And Velocity Perturbations In A Slowly Contracting Universe, Olivia R. Bitcon

Honors Undergraduate Theses

One focus of research in cosmology regards the growth of structure in the universe: how we end up with stars, galaxies, galaxy clusters, and large scale structure in a universe that appears homogeneous and isotropic on large scales. Using cosmological perturbation theory, we investigate the evolution of density and velocity perturbations corresponding to a universe that is slowly contracting (Ijjas and Steinhardt), testing with and comparing different values for the equation-of-state parameter. This allows for the comparison of the growth of large scale structure in scenarios including a matter-dominated expanding universe, a dark energy-dominated expanding universe, and now, an ekpyrotic …

Split Catalytic Probes For The Detection Of Monkeypox Virus, Jaehyun Ahn Jan 2023

Split Catalytic Probes For The Detection Of Monkeypox Virus, Jaehyun Ahn

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The COVID-19 outbreak highlighted the important role that diagnostic tests play in the healthcare system. To reduce the impact of infectious disease outbreaks, the development of rapid and cost-effective point-of-care-tests (POCTs) is crucial. With the dissemination of the Monkeypox (Mpox) virus, it became a necessity to produce POCTS that are inexpensive and easy to use. This work explored the construction of two colorimetric assays that aim to detect Mpox genetic signatures. One is based on the split-peroxidase-like deoxyribozyme probes (sPDz), while the other utilizes a cascade system of split RNA-cleaving deoxyribozyme (sDz) and peroxidase-like deoxyribozyme (PDz). Both rely on catalytic …

Leaving The European Union: When Euroscepticism Meets Internal Crisis Within Member States, Isabella M. Dimesa Jan 2023

Leaving The European Union: When Euroscepticism Meets Internal Crisis Within Member States, Isabella M. Dimesa

Honors Undergraduate Theses

In the era of global stability, it is crucial to understand the nuances that maintain peace. Neoliberal institutionalism is the ideal that institutions bound together promote peace through sharing stakes and developing positive cost-benefit matrixes that ensure cooperation. The European Union (EU), a neoliberal institution, was developed to establish a peaceful, cooperative European system to further the European agenda and foster power through combined assets. The EU has manifested this success and prosperity—until one of its member states, the United Kingdom, defected from the institution, causing a shock to the EU system. Why would an institution yielding positive returns see …

Big Ideas, Small Data: Opportunities And Challenges For Data Science And The Social Services Sector, Gerri Dimas, Lauri Goldkind, Renata Konrad

Social Service Faculty Publications

The social services sector, comprised of a constellation of programs meeting critical human needs, lacks the resources and infrastructure to implement data science tools. As the use of data science continues to expand, it has been accom- panied by a rise in interest and commitment to using these tools for social good. This commentary examines overlooked, and under-researched limitations of data science applications in the social sector—the volume, quality, and context of the available data that currently exists in social service systems require unique considerations. We explore how the presence of small data within the social service contexts can result …

The Federal Reserve's Mandates, David T. Zaring, Jeffery Y. Zhang Jan 2023

The Federal Reserve's Mandates, David T. Zaring, Jeffery Y. Zhang

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

Solutions to systemic problems such as climate change and racial inequities have eluded policymakers for decades. In searching for creative solutions, some policymakers have recently thought about expanding the Federal Reserve’s core set of macro-economic mandates to tackle these issues. But there are real questions about whether that can be done from a legal perspective and whether that should be done from a policy perspective.

In this Article, we propose a framework to answer these two questions of “can we” and “should we”—a framework grounded in administrative law and macroeconomics. In Part I, we consider the legal challenges that the …
