The details of this paper can be summarized in three parts. First, customize and build a 3D model for the digital human. Second, create a parameterized 3D model for different facial animations. Third, track the user for synchronizing the facial expressions of the customized digital human. The experimental results and …

Religious Gerrymandering: A New Avenue For Redistricting Challenges?, Jacqueline Rosen Jan 2023

Religious Gerrymandering: A New Avenue For Redistricting Challenges?, Jacqueline Rosen

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

Recently, the Supreme Court significantly limited review of partisan gerrymandering claims, closing the door to a substantial portion of redistricting challenges. However, religious-based redistricting is an overlooked area that should be explored under both federal and state Constitutions. Existing redistricting standards can easily be applied to religious gerrymandering claims. In addition, the federal Establishment Clause may provide a basis for some especially egregious instances of religious gerrymandering. However, perhaps the least explored and most viable avenue for relief is through reliance on state constitutional protections, such as the unique language of Utah’s Constitution. Using Utah as a case study, I …

My Sister Is My Role Model: Why Girls Choose Science, Patricia Butler Jan 2023

My Sister Is My Role Model: Why Girls Choose Science, Patricia Butler

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

Increasing the number of people who choose science is of national importance for both the economy and scientific dominance (Wang, 2013). Women and girls are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and math, or STEM, fields their numbers are increasing, however, they are doing so disproportionally. Women are a minority in fields such as engineering and computer science, but are well-represented in the biological sciences. This mixed methods study investigated the intersection of gender and science identity and how girls formed science identities. This study used Mann-Whitney U tests to analyze the Likert scale data and both a priori and inductive …

Should The United States Adopt Federal Artificial Intelligence Regulation Similar To The European Union, Jean Joseph

Loyola University Chicago International Law Review

Artificial Intelligence (AI) promises to revolutionize our everyday lives and how we approach all sectors of the economy and society. For the laundry list of benefits this form of technology provides, there is a concern as to the ways Al can produce troubling outcomes - including racial discrimination and social inequality. The United States House of Representatives introduced the National Al Initiative Act of 2020 (NAIIA) to ensure continued US leadership in Al research and development. However, the NAIIA leaves issues concerning the risk of biases and discrimination associated with using Al systems to federal agencies and state governments. While …

Identification Of Rickettsia Prowazekii Methionine Aminopeptidase Inhibitors And Development Of Thermal Shift Assays For Burkholderia Pseudomallei Ispf And Sars-Cov-2 3cl Protease, Ishpriya Sharma

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

There is a crucial need for new antibacterial agents to combat the increase in antibiotic resistance. Methionine aminopeptidase (MetAp) is an enzyme that removes the amino-terminal methionine residue from newly synthesized proteins, an important step in the maturation of proteins. As such, MetAp is a target for the development of antibacterial and anticancer agents. One such bacterial target is Rickettsia prowazekii (Rp), the causative agent of epidemic typhus. To discover new inhibitors of RpMetAp1, the MMV Malaria Box, which is a collection of 400 compounds with drug-like and probe-like compounds, was screened using a high throughput fluorescence-based RpMetAp1 enzyme inhibition …

Variable- And Person-Centered Approaches To Examining Construct-Relevant Multidimensionality In Writing Self-Efficacy, Morgan Les Debusk-Lane, Sharon Zumbrunn, Christine Lee Bae, Michael D. Broda, Roger Bruning, Ashlee L. Sjogren

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Self-efficacy is an essential component of students’ motivation and success in writing. There have been great advancements in our theoretical understanding of writing self-efficacy over the past 40 years; however, there is a gap in how we empirically model the multidimensionality of writing self-efficacy. The purpose of the present study was to examine the multidimensionality of writing selfefficacy, and present validity evidence for the adapted Self-Efficacy for Writing Scale (SEWS) through a series of measurement model comparisons and person-centered approaches. Using a sample of 1,466 8th–10th graders, results showed that a bifactor exploratory structural equation model best represented the data, …

Applying Machine Learning To Categorize Distinct Categories Of Network Traffic, Isaac M. Dunham Jan 2023

Applying Machine Learning To Categorize Distinct Categories Of Network Traffic, Isaac M. Dunham

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

The recent rapid growth of the field of data science has made available to all fields opportunities to leverage machine learning. Computer network traffic classification has traditionally been performed using static, pre-written rules that are easily made ineffective if changes, legitimate or not, are made to the applications or protocols underlying a particular category of network traffic. This paper explores the problem of network traffic classification and analyzes the viability of having the process performed using a multitude of classical machine learning techniques against significant statistical similarities between classes of network traffic as opposed to traditional static traffic identifiers.

Tools are needed to reach children during these crucial developmental ages and expose them to all of the wonderful things arthropods do and educate them on how big of a role arthropods play in the lives of every human around the globe. As digital technology in households is becoming more apparent and accessible, new ways to engage these audiences need to be developed and utilized. This creates a unique …

Towards Modeling Human Attention From Eye Movements For Neural Source Code Summarization, Aakash Bansal, Bonita Sharif, Collin Mcmillan Jan 2023

Towards Modeling Human Attention From Eye Movements For Neural Source Code Summarization, Aakash Bansal, Bonita Sharif, Collin Mcmillan

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Neural source code summarization is the task of generating natural language descriptions of source code behavior using neural networks. A fundamental component of most neural models is an attention mechanism. The attention mechanism learns to connect features in source code to specific words to use when generating natural language descriptions. Humans also pay attention to some features in code more than others. This human attention reflects experience and high-level cognition well beyond the capability of any current neural model. In this paper, we use data from published eye-tracking experiments to create a model of this human attention. The model predicts …

Turfgrass Alternatives For The Modern Yard, John Lonowski Jan 2023

Turfgrass Alternatives For The Modern Yard, John Lonowski

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

The considerable maintenance and irrigation required of turfgrass lawns can often be seen as a fruitless endeavor, as it consumes substantial resources but yields minimal economic benefit. The goal of this paper is to highlight the resource needs of traditional turfgrass lawns and identify and test alternative lawn types that are still aesthetically pleasing while being more sustainable than traditional turfgrass. To obtain the results, the experiment was conducted in Alda, Nebraska employing a randomized complete block design, which tested four entries at two separate locations, each with three replications. The entries include: 1. Buffalograss, 2. Tall Fescue, 3. White …

Interspecific Oral Rabies Vaccine Bait Competition In The Southeast United States, Wesley C. Dixon, Jacob E. Hill, Richard Chipman, Amy J. Davis, Amy Gilbert, James C. Beasley, Olin E. Rhodes Jr., Guha Dharmarajan

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The United States Department of Agriculture’s National Rabies Management Program (NRMP) has coordinated the use of oral rabies vaccination (ORV) to control the spread of raccoon rabies virus variant west of the Appalachian Mountains since 1997. Working with state and local partners, the NRMP deploys ORV baits containing a rabies vaccine, primarily targeting raccoon populations (Procyon lotor). Bait competition between raccoons and non-target species may limit the effectiveness of ORV programs, but the extent of bait competition remains poorly quantified, particularly in the southeastern United States. We placed placebo ORV baits in bottomland hardwood (n = 637 baits) and upland …

DNA can fold into G-quadruplexes (GQs), non-canonical secondary structures formed by π-π stacking of G-tetrads. GQs are important in many biological processes, which makes them promising therapeutic targets. We identified a 42-nucleotide long, purine-only G-rich sequence from human genome, which contains eight G-stretches connected by A and AAAA loops. We divided this sequence into five unique segments, four guanine stretches each, named GA1-5. In order to investigate the role of adenines in GQ structure formation, we performed biophysical and X-ray crystallographic studies of GA1-5 and their complexes with a highly selective GQ ligand, N-methyl mesoporphyrin IX (NMM). Our data indicate …

A Really Good Example Helps Learning About An Abstract Concept, Ava Funkhouser, Elena Nicoladis

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

University students are often asked to learn abstract concepts. Abstract concepts are hard to learn. Giving specific examples can help learning abstract concepts. These examples might limit understanding to the similarities between the abstract domain and particular examples. The primary purpose of this study was to test whether exposure to multiple examples would lead to better learning than exposure to a single example. Secondarily, we were interested in whether there was any particularly effective example. Introductory psychology students were invited to learn about the abstract concept of semiotics, through either 1) three of five distinct examples or 2) a single …

The frequency and severity of wildfire has increased around the world within the past two decades, due to shifts in land management practices, climate change, and other factors. The effects of these fires have led to an inaccurate public perception of wildfire as a whole. This overly-simplified, vilified perception of all fire obscures the role that it has played in shaping landscapes for thousands of years, and how indigenous peoples have applied fire to take care of landscapes.

Positive public perception of using fire as a tool for land management creates a more supportive environment for healthy landscape management. Thus, …

Unpacking The Forgotten Truth: Reestablishing Affirmative Action With Hispanic-Serving Institutions And The Military Equal Opportunity Program For Hispanics, Isabelle Rosado Jan 2023

Unpacking The Forgotten Truth: Reestablishing Affirmative Action With Hispanic-Serving Institutions And The Military Equal Opportunity Program For Hispanics, Isabelle Rosado

Modern Languages, Philosophy and Classics Theses

Affirmative Action combats discrimination amongst individuals on the basis of race, creed, color, sex, or national origin and falls under the 14th Amendment. Race has been a leading result of the reevaluation of Affirmative Action programs. Furthermore, the United States Military is an organization that also advocates for racial equality but is seldom discussed. Claims of reverse racism and privilege shield the primary purpose of Affirmative Action. Discredited opinions engulf young minds in the never-ending social conflict of racial equality. This problem continues to be unsolved which divides Americans. The increase of Hispanics/Latinxs in the U.S. forces the analysis of …

The chemical enrichment of dust and metals are vital processes in constraining the star formation history of the universe. These are important ingredients in the formation and evolution of galaxies overall. Previously, the dust masses of high-redshift star-forming galaxies have been determined through their far-infrared continuum, however, equivalent, and potentially simpler, approaches to determining the metal masses have yet to be explored at z ≳ 2. Here, we present a new method of inferring the metal mass in the interstellar medium (ISM) of galaxies out to z 8, using the far-infrared [C II]- 158† μm emission line as a proxy. …
