Nuclear family relationships are some of the first and most foundational to an individual (Steinberg, 2023). Sibling relationships have an impact on the way an adolescent develops, regardless of birth order or sibling status, which influences the way the adolescent thinks and behaves (Feinburg et al., 2012). A negative sibling relationship can lead to issues such as school conduct problems, substance abuse, and low self-esteem (Feinberg et al., 2012). Friendships also play an important role in quality of life and social well-being of emerging adults. A high-quality friendship is defined by high levels of prosocial behavior, intimacy, and other positive …

Easy accessibility to social media content equates to increased access to emotional-charged materials. Research investigating the consequences of such emotional exposures on day-to-day lives is growing, with previous works showing high correlations between social media use and emotional modulations of the user. (Christensen, 2018; Mugg, 2005). Tiktok is a popular media platform and is a common tactic to present users with highly emotional content to maintain engagement. (Kin, 2017). A question arises as to the emotional induction rates and effects of such streaming content, as previous work demonstrates that emotion induction is highly associated with physiological arousal (Siedlecka, 2018) and …

Bicategorical Traces And Cotraces, Justin Barhite
Bicategorical Traces And Cotraces, Justin Barhite
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
Familiar constructions like the trace of a matrix and the Euler characteristic of a closed smooth manifold are generalized by a notion of trace of an endomorphism of a dualizable object in a bicategory equipped with a piece of additional structure called a shadow functor. Another example of this bicategorical trace, in the form of maps between Hochschild homology of bimodules, appears in a 1987 paper by Joseph Lipman, alongside a more mysterious ”cotrace” map involving Hochschild cohomology. Putting this cotrace on the same category-theoretic footing as the trace has led us to propose a ”bicategorical cotrace” in a closed …

Evaluating A Temperature-Dependent Mosquito Population Model, Morgan H. Jackson, Elizabet L. Estallo, Cheng Ly, Michael A. Robert
Graduate Research Posters
Dengue Virus causes over 390 million infections and around 40,000 deaths each year. This virus is primarily transmitted by the mosquito Aedes aegypti. The life cycle of these mosquitos is significantly impacted by temperature, however, temperature is often neglected in mechanistic models. Predictive models of mosquito populations thus require the inclusion of temperature and are valuable for helping medical officials plan for the impact of outbreaks. Using mosquito and climate data collected in Córdoba, Argentina from 2010-2013, we developed a non-autonomous ordinary differential equations model that includes temperature dependent parameters associated with mosquito life history. We performed local sensitivity …

A Critical Approach To Engineering Mathematics Activities For Sustainable Development, Matheus Oliveira De Andrade, Mariam Makramalla
Practice Papers
Engineering projects are frequently experienced through the complexity of knowledge co-production between experts and local communities. This involves an ability to work critically and creatively within unfamiliar epistemologies, drawing from quantitative, social and scientific methods to realise high-impact solutions. In this work-in-progress paper, we put forward a prototype for a case-control study aiming to evaluate student buy-in and learning outcomes for a cross-cultural implementation of critical mathematics approaches contextualised by sustainability challenges. We outline and discuss aspects of mathematical modelling activities that can scaffold an environment where human subjectivity amplifies the quality and relevance of quantitative arguments. As proof-of-concept, we …

The Power Of Supercomputing Applied To Fractal Image Generation, Charlin Me Duff
The Power Of Supercomputing Applied To Fractal Image Generation, Charlin Me Duff
Mathematics Senior Capstones
This project looks into how parallelism benefits the runtime of generating large fractal images. First, it explains what the Julia and Mandelbrot Sets are, who discovered them, and how they are calculated. Following that is an introduction to supercomputers, parallel computing, and Cal Poly Humboldt’s very own supercomputer. Once groundwork is laid, I explain my process of adapting a fractal image generation program from serial computing to different levels of parallelism. After that, is an analysis of the effects of levels of parallelism on the runtime of large fractal image generation. This paper concludes with a reflection on the project …

River systems across California have been impacted by appurtenant structures such as dams and diversions. These structures have had an adverse impact on Benthic invertebrate (BMI) communities by regulating river systems and changing the natural hydraulic pulses that follow seasonal precipitation. Benthic invertebrates are a critical food resource for salmonids and serve as an indicator of ecosystem health. Our study was interested in seeing the effects of scouring events on BMI in the Trinity River of Trinity County, C.A. Following a large precipitation event that occurred in the region in December 2022, an influx of water entered the river through …

School of Computing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Human-robot collaboration has been one of the main focuses for both research and usage in advanced manufacturing. In human-robot partnerships, instead of static collaboration for repetitive tasks, it is more significant for the robot to dynamically understand its human partner's intentions and collaborate with them to complete the shared tasks. Motivated by these issues, we develop a model for the robot to learn to complete tasks by watching and analyzing human demonstrations. This allows the robot to become more accurate and customizable with each human's personalized working preference. Based on the long short-term memory method, we propose a new approach …

Price Of Stability In Quality-Aware Federated Learning, Yizhou Yan, Xinyu Tang, Chao Huang, Ming Tang
School of Computing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Federated Learning (FL) is a distributed machine learning scheme that enables clients to train a shared global model without exchanging local data. The presence of label noise can severely degrade the FL performance, and some existing studies have focused on algorithm design for label denoising. However, they ignored the important issue that clients may not apply costly label denoising strategies due to them being self-interested and having heterogeneous valuations on the FL performance. To fill this gap, we model the clients' interactions as a novel label denoising game and characterize its equilibrium. We also analyze the price of stability, which …
