Experiences Of Non-Tenured African American Female Nursing Faculty At Predominately White Institutions, Allison R. Bethune
Experiences Of Non-Tenured African American Female Nursing Faculty At Predominately White Institutions, Allison R. Bethune
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The proportionally fewer female African American nursing faculty at predominately White institutions (PWIs) have frequently reported adverse employment conditions in academia. The faculty within nursing schools at PWIs does not reflect society’s diversity. The problem addressed through this study is the low number of female African American nursing faculty in PWIs. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to examine the experiences of non-tenured female African American nursing faculty at PWIs. The conceptual framework that informed this study is Crenshaw’s intersectionality. The research question addressed the experiences of non-tenured female African American nursing faculty at PWIs. Six non-tenured female …

The United States has invested millions of dollars in STEM program initiatives; however, African Americans in STEM career fields are underrepresented. The purpose of this qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological study aimed to explore the lived experiences of African-American first-year college students from rural communities in a STEM program and whether their experiences influenced their decision to pursue a STEM major in college. Spencer’s phenomenological variant of ecological systems theory (PVEST) was used to frame the study. Data were collected from semistructured interviews with eight African American first-year college students from rural communities. Coding analysis involved identifying meaning units and situated narratives …
The Case Against Regional Transmission Monopolies, Kristen Van De Biezendos
The Case Against Regional Transmission Monopolies, Kristen Van De Biezendos
Faculty Scholarship
Over the next decade, the United States will need to build significant regional transmission infrastructure to achieve the country’s goal of net-zero power by 2035. However, there is a significant barrier: the transmission system is almost entirely owned by private monopolies. As a result, the grid has grown not to serve the public interest but in accordance with the economic priorities of these monopolies, which are not incentivized to innovate, find efficiencies, or lower costs. Past attempts to encourage competitive bidding for regional transmission projects have been stymied by laws intended to protect the monopolies, including the right of first …

University Interdisciplinary Linked Block Schedules And Developmental Student Success, Linda S. Reeves-Wymer
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Developmental education is the starting point for many 1st-year college students, especially from underrepresented, low-income, and first-generation populations. One such 1st-year program linked block-scheduled academic skill-development courses with a required interdisciplinary general education science course where instruction was provided simultaneously in a lecture format to college-ready nondevelopmental students and developmental students in three skill-development courses: reading, writing, and combined reading/writing. Although this program had existed for over 20 years, the effectiveness of the program, meaning whether the linked skill-development courses were associated with academic success, had not been assessed. Guided by Tinto’s integration theory, a causal comparative design with the …

Preschool Teachers’ And Parents’ Perspectives Regarding Factors That Affect Kindergarten Readiness, Ebony Catrice Williams
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
When children enter kindergarten, they are expected to demonstrate an interrelated set of skills and competencies including pre-academic skills, cognitive abilities, socioemotional well-being, and physical health. The problem that was the focus of this study was that many students who complete prekindergarten are not ready for kindergarten. Guided by Garcia’s kindergarten readiness framework, the purpose of this basic qualitative study was to increase understanding of the perspectives of parents and prekindergarten teachers regarding their role in developing kindergarten readiness, and the factors they believe support or hinder their efforts. Eight prekindergarten teachers and 8 parents of prekindergarten students from one …
The Relationship Between College Credits Earned In A Community College Dual Enrollment Program And First-Year Grade Point Average, Johnesa Hodge
The Relationship Between College Credits Earned In A Community College Dual Enrollment Program And First-Year Grade Point Average, Johnesa Hodge
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The increased number of college credits earned in dual enrollment programs initiated concern by educators, researchers, and policymakers regarding college readiness. However, data are scarce and inconsistent across governing states and community colleges to measure college readiness and dual enrollment’s effectiveness. The purpose of this quantitative study examined early college credits earned in general education, career and technical education, college orientation disciplines, and first-year grade point average (GPA) to measure college readiness. Conley’s key dimensions of college and career readiness model grounded the study. Archival transcript data were collected from a Michigan community college for 524 former dual enrollment students. …

Application Of Mixture Models For Doubly Inflated Count Data, Monika Arora, N. Rao Chaganty
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
In health and social science and other fields where count data analysis is important, zero-inflated models have been employed when the frequency of zero count is high (inflated). Due to multiple reasons, there are scenarios in which an additional count value of k > 0 occurs with high frequency. The zero- and k-inflated Poisson distribution model (ZkIP) is more appropriate for such situations. The ZkIP model is a mixture distribution with three components: degenerate distributions at 0 and k count and a Poisson distribution. In this article, we propose an alternative and computationally fast expectation–maximization (EM) algorithm to obtain the parameter …
Generalized Sparse Bayesian Learning And Application To Image Reconstruction, Jan Glaubitz, Anne Gelb, Guohui Song
Generalized Sparse Bayesian Learning And Application To Image Reconstruction, Jan Glaubitz, Anne Gelb, Guohui Song
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
Image reconstruction based on indirect, noisy, or incomplete data remains an important yet challenging task. While methods such as compressive sensing have demonstrated high-resolution image recovery in various settings, there remain issues of robustness due to parameter tuning. Moreover, since the recovery is limited to a point estimate, it is impossible to quantify the uncertainty, which is often desirable. Due to these inherent limitations, a sparse Bayesian learning approach is sometimes adopted to recover a posterior distribution of the unknown. Sparse Bayesian learning assumes that some linear transformation of the unknown is sparse. However, most of the methods developed are …

The picture is of the tapering Chester Shot Tower, located in Chester, England. It was built in 1799 for the manufacture of lead shot for use in the Napoleonic Wars. Molten lead was poured through a sieve at the top of the tower, with the tiny droplets forming perfect spheres during the fall; these were then cooled in a vat of water at the base. This process was less labor-intensive than an earlier method using molds. It is the oldest of the three remaining shot towers in the UK. Using the parked van at the base, estimate (i) the height …

Analysis Of Multi-Drug Resistant Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Using Split Deoxyribozymes, Abryana Fergus
Analysis Of Multi-Drug Resistant Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Using Split Deoxyribozymes, Abryana Fergus
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Globally, tuberculosis, a disease caused by the species of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) complex, stands as a leading cause of death from a single infectious agent. Even though antituberculous drugs are available, treatment is challenging due to antibiotic resistance associated with point mutations in the bacterial genome. Resistance to the first-line antibiotics – rifampin and isoniazid – results in multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR) requiring a more complicated treatment regimen. Timely and accurate identification of drug-resistant TB cases can help prescribe the most effective treatment and prevent the spread of infection. This research aims to develop an assay to discern multi-drug resistant forms …
A Developmental Investigation Of Separation And Analysis Of Molecular Mass 302 Da Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons Using High Performance Liquid Chromatography And Chiral Stationary Phase, James Janesko
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
High molecular weight – polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (HMW-PAH) are often found where air, water, and soil are subject to higher levels of industrial pollutants. These molecules are environmentally concerning due to their carcinogenic, mutagenic, and tumorigenic propensities. Furthermore, the isomers in this family are challenging to separate due to similar retention parameters, spectroscopic fingerprints, and mass spectral patterns. The primary purpose of this dissertation is to expand on the methodology for separation and analysis of the molecular mass 302 Da six-ring isomers using High Performance Liquid Chromatography. Retention behaviors of 21 commercially available isomers in synthetic mixture were collected via …
Dormant Propagules In Demographic Studies: A Recurrent Bias And Potential Solutions, Federico Borghesi
Dormant Propagules In Demographic Studies: A Recurrent Bias And Potential Solutions, Federico Borghesi
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
In the face of unprecedented anthropogenic change, we increasingly turn to emergent technologies and extensive data sets for solutions that complement much needed systemic changes in our societies. These technological solutions, however, must be approached with care. We must recognize and address biases in the way data has been accumulated. In demographic studies, dormant life stages, such as seed banks, and other cryptic factors have often been neglected. The potential consequences of these omissions have been extensively described in the literature. In the first chapter, I analyze patterns of seed bank omissions in demographic models, finding unjustified omissions are widespread …
The Dynamical Measurement And Modeling Of Metacognition And Engagement Using Self-Report And Multimodal Data With Advanced Learning Technologies, Megan Wiedbusch
The Dynamical Measurement And Modeling Of Metacognition And Engagement Using Self-Report And Multimodal Data With Advanced Learning Technologies, Megan Wiedbusch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Interdisciplinary research has demonstrated that learning and problem solving with advanced learning technologies (ALTs) such as intelligent tutoring systems, simulations, hypermedia, serious games, and virtual reality can promote and foster the development of 21st century skills (e.g., collaboration, problem solving, self-regulated learning) by measuring and using the interactions between cognitive, affective, metacognitive, motivational, and social (CAMMS) processes. Interdisciplinary researchers focused on self-regulated learning (SRL) have developed several theoretical models which model students' CAMMS processes and their learning behaviors. However, when empirically testing these models, researchers face complicated methodological decisions around modeling, measuring, processing, and analyzing student data. Many of these …
A Theoretical Study Of Elementary Processes In Interstellar Plasma, Joshua Forer
A Theoretical Study Of Elementary Processes In Interstellar Plasma, Joshua Forer
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
Interstellar plasma — interstellar clouds in particular — play an important role in determining the structure and evolution of galaxies. Understanding the time evolution of such plasmas requires knowledge of the chemical processes that drive their dynamics. Two processes are studied in this dissertation: radiative electron attachment (REA) via dipole-bound states (DBSs) and dissociative recombination (DR). Of the several hundred molecules detected in the interstellar medium, only eight anions have been detected: CN-, C3N-, C5N-, C7N-, C4H-, C6H-, C8H-, and C10H-. Their production mechanism is not well known; REA was suggested as a possible formation pathway, but previous theoretical studies …
Algorithms And Variations On The Positional Burrows-Wheeler Transform And Their Applications, Ahsan Sanaullah
Algorithms And Variations On The Positional Burrows-Wheeler Transform And Their Applications, Ahsan Sanaullah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
In this dissertation, we develop algorithms and variations on the Positional Burrows-Wheeler Transform (PBWT). The PBWT is a data structure that stores M binary strings of length N while allowing efficient search. We develop the dynamic-PBWT (d-PBWT). The d-PBWT is a variation of the PBWT that allows its relevant algorithms to run with unchanged time complexity, but also allows efficient insertion and deletion of haplotypes. We provide insertion and deletion algorithms on the PBWT with average case O(N) time complexity. We also improve upon the query algorithms for the PBWT. Durbin described a set maximal match query algorithm on the …
Piv Measurements Of Open-Channel Turbulent Flow Under Unconstrained Conditions, James K. Arthur
Piv Measurements Of Open-Channel Turbulent Flow Under Unconstrained Conditions, James K. Arthur
Faculty Journal Articles
Many open-channel turbulent flow studies have been focused on highly constrained conditions. Thus, it is rather conventional to note such flows as being fully developed, fully turbulent, and unaffected by sidewalls and free surface disturbances. However, many real-life flow phenomena in natural water bodies and artificially installed drain channels are not as ideal. This work is aimed at studying some of these unconstrained conditions. This is achieved by using particle image velocimetry measurements of a developing turbulent open-channel flow over a smooth wall. The tested flow effects are low values of the Reynolds number based on the momentum thickness Re …

Quasisymmetric Functions Distinguishing Trees, Jean-Christophe Aval, Karimatou Djenabou, Peter R. W. Mcnamara
Faculty Journal Articles
A famous conjecture of Stanley states that his chromatic symmetric function distinguishes trees. As a quasisymmetric analogue, we conjecture that the chromatic quasisymmetric function of Shareshian and Wachs and of Ellzey distinguishes directed trees. This latter conjecture would be implied by an affirmative answer to a question of Hasebe and Tsujie about the P-partition enumerator distinguishing posets whose Hasse diagrams are trees. They proved the case of rooted trees and our results include a generalization of their result.
A Framework To Support Teacher Noticing Of Students' Mathematical Thinking In Technology-Mediated Environments, Allison Mcculloch, Lara Dick, Jennifer Lovett
A Framework To Support Teacher Noticing Of Students' Mathematical Thinking In Technology-Mediated Environments, Allison Mcculloch, Lara Dick, Jennifer Lovett
Faculty Journal Articles
The practice of teacher noticing students' mathematical thinking often includes three interrelated components: attending to students' strategies, interpreting students' understandings, and deciding how to respond on the basis of students' understanding. This practice gains complexity in technology mediated environments (i.e., using technology-enhanced math tasks) because it requires attending to and interpreting students' engagement with technology. Current frameworks implicitly assume the practice includes noticing the ways students use tools (including technology tools) in their work, but do not explicitly highlight the role of the tool. While research has shown that using these frameworks supports preservice secondary mathematics teachers (PSTs) developing noticing …
