Effective Methods Of Simultaneously Teaching In Person And Online, Naseer Yari Jan 2023

Effective Methods Of Simultaneously Teaching In Person And Online, Naseer Yari

ASEE North Midwest Section Annual Conference 2023 Publications

The usual teaching strategies are no longer effective when half of the students are in class and the other half are online concurrently (also known as hybrid flexible or HyFlex). The challenge is how to be visible to both groups at the same time and with the same level of quality. The goal is to have a special connection with both groups of students so they can hear the emphasis of terms, see facial expressions, hand movements, and body language which, for some students, can make the topic easier to understand. The efficiency of HyFlex teaching greatly depends on the …

Context. The interaction between active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and their host galaxies is scarcely resolved. Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies are believed to represent AGN at early stages of their evolution and to allow one to observe feeding and feedback processes at high black hole accretion rates.

Aims. We aim to constrain the properties of the ionised gas outflow in Mrk 1044, a nearby super-Eddington accreting NLS1. Based on the outflow energetics and the associated timescales, we estimate the outflow’s future impact on the ongoing host galaxy star formation on different spatial scales.

Methods. We applied a spectroastrometric analysis to …

Introduction To The Special Issue On Immunology, Colby Tofel-Grehl, Brooke A. Whitworth

Publications

The COVID-19 pandemic laid bare the absence of needed resources for teachers to engage students in learning about infectious disease as both a socioscientific issue and a scientific phenomenon (Kafai et al. 2022). With infectious disease largely absent from the NGSS, teachers had to creatively link lessons that contextualized and examined key aspects of infectious disease education during the COVID-19 pandemic. We saw in real time the impacts of popular news, social media, and public mood on broader socioscientific behaviors such as vaccination, masking, and social distancing. We watched as people’s understanding of the nature of science (Lederman 2013) …

Comparing Recent Advances In Estimating And Measuring Oil Slick Thickness: An Mpri Technical Report, Crrc, Noaa, Mpri, Bsee

Coastal Response Research Center

Characterization of the degree and extent of surface oil during and after an oil spill is a critical part of emergency response and Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) activities. More specifically, understanding floating oil thickness in real-time can guide response efforts by directing limited assets to priority cleanup areas; aid in ‘volume released’ estimates; enhance fate, transport and effects modeling capabilities; and support natural resource injury determinations. An international workshop brought researchers from agencies, academia and industry who were advancing in situ and remote oil characterization tools and methods together with stake holders and end users who rely on information …

Incision Precision: Engaging Students During Dissection Labs, Azure N. Faucette Jan 2023

Incision Precision: Engaging Students During Dissection Labs, Azure N. Faucette

Publications and Research

Active learning tools, such as gamification, have facilitated teamwork and improved decision-making skills in Anatomy and Physiology classes. However, most Anatomy and Physiology labs currently contain dissection activities where students are not likely to engage in inquiry, critical thinking, or problem-solving. Usually, the instructor gives a brief lecture on the topic, and students are left to dissect without understanding how the lecture relates to what is in front of them, which is frustrating. Coupled with the frustration, some students have adverse opinions on dissecting specimens, including hesitation to dissect the specimen and religious or ethical concerns with dissection. Utilizing similar …

Probing Massive Contact Binary Star Evolution Via Measurements Of Orbital Period Changes, Henry Phippen, Levi Carr, Larry A. Molnar Jan 2023

Probing Massive Contact Binary Star Evolution Via Measurements Of Orbital Period Changes, Henry Phippen, Levi Carr, Larry A. Molnar

Summer Research

Many stars have companions orbiting so closely that they share a common atmosphere: contact binary stars (see Figure 1). High and low mass systems differ significantly in key observable properties such as mass ratio. In the accompanying poster (Carr et al. 2023), we show that considerations of dynamic and thermal stability prohibit nearly equal masses for low mass (sun-like) systems, but not for high mass systems. Menon et al. (2021) recently published models of the behavior of massive systems under the approximation that the internal structures of the stars are not affected by their being in contact. A key observable …

Mineral-Specific Issues In 3d Scanning And Printing For Digital Collections, Outreach And Display, Selby Hearth, Bronwen Densmore

Geology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Three-dimensional (3D) scanning and 3D printing of natural history specimens presents interesting opportunities for informal and formal science education, as well as specimen preservation and display. Museum staff in several museums have begun scanning and making specimens available online. However, very few mineral specimens are available as scanned 3D objects, because minerals present unique challenges in scanning. Specifically, their variable surface reflection properties (“luster”) and surface complexities make them complicated specimens to reproduce. This paper examines the variables involved in 3D scanning and 3D printing mineral specimens, lays out criteria for ideal candidates, and presents workarounds to common problems. In …

Novel Analysis Of The Sars-Cov-2 Genome To Identify Positive Evolutionary Selection In The Spike Protein Of Emerging Variants, Ulysses Ison

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This thesis tests the hypothesis that the spike protein of SARV-CoV-2 is under positive evolutionary selection. A consensus nucleotide sequence was generated for the most current SARS-CoV-2 variant, XBB1.5, by performing sequence alignments of recent isolates. The consensus nucleotide sequence was translated to obtain the amino acid sequence. The amino acid and nucleotide sequences were compared to the original Wuhan-hu-1 strain to identify mutations. Forty-three mutations were identified in the spike protein, and all but two changed the amino acid. The majority of mutations were found in the receptor binding domain of the spike protein, which is the region of …

Prenatal Cannabinoid Exposure: Why Expecting Individuals Should Take A Pregnancy Pause From Using Cannabinoid Products, Alexis Lin, Gelonia L. Dent, Suzy Davies, Zarena M. Dominguez, Leigh-Anne Cioffredi, Gabrielle L. Mclemore, Jessie R. Maxwell

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

Cannabinoid use in all populations is increasing as legalization across the United States continues. Concerningly, there is a lack of caution provided by medical providers to pregnant individuals as to the impact the use of cannabinoids could have on the developing fetus. Research continues in both the preclinical and clinical areas, and is severely needed, as the potency of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive component of cannabis, has increased dramatically since the initial studies were completed. Thus far, clinical studies raise compelling evidence for short term memory deficits, impulse control issues, and attention deficiencies following prenatal cannabinoid exposure (PCE). These …

Enhancement Of Metal Nanostructure Deposition On Silicon Laser-Induced Periodic Surface Structures By Galvanic Replacement, Nicholas Simpson, Eric J. Broadhead, Addison Casto, Katharine M. Tibbetts

Chemistry Publications

We report a chemically motivated, single-step method to enhance metal deposition onto silicon laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSSs) using reactive laser ablation in liquid (RLAL). Galvanic replacement (GR) reactions were used in conjunction with RLAL (GR-RLAL) to promote the deposition of Au and Cu nanostructures onto a Si LIPSS. To increase the deposition of Au, sacrificial metals Cu, Fe, and Zn were used; Fe and Zn also enhanced the deposition of Cu. We show that the deposited metal content, surface morphology, and metal crystallite size can be tuned based on the difference in electrochemical potentials of the deposited and sacrificial …
