De Linea Brevissima In Superficie Quacunque Duo Quaelibet Puncta Iungente, Leonhard Euler

All Works by Eneström Number

This article arose out of a homework assignment that Euler did for Johann Bernoulli. Bernoulli asked Euler to find the shortest line between two points on a surface. This work provided some of the first analytical foundations for the calculus of variations.

Problematis Traiectoriarum Reciprocarum Solutio, Leonhard Euler

All Works by Eneström Number

This article contains Euler's first published use of complex numbers and a many-axis geometric construction. Euler also defines even functions f(x) as those for which f(x) = f(-x), perhaps the first use of this term.

The Threefold Paradise Of Cotton Mather: An Edition Of "Triparadisus", Reiner Smolinski Mar 1727

The Threefold Paradise Of Cotton Mather: An Edition Of "Triparadisus", Reiner Smolinski

Electronic Texts in American Studies

No other American Puritan has fueled both the popular and academic imagination as has Cotton Mather (1663-1728). Colonial America's foremost theologian and historian, Mather was also one of its most powerful voices advocating millennialism. His lifelong preoccupation with this subject culminated in his definitive treatise, "Triparadisus" (1726/1727), left unpublished at his death. In it, Mather justified his ideological revisionism; his response to the philological, historical, and scientific challenges of the Bible as text by English and continental deists; and his hermeneutical break from the orthodox exegeses of his father, Increase Mather, and Joseph Mede. In his critical introduction to this …

Dissertatio Physica De Sono, Leonhard Euler

All Works by Eneström Number

Euler first explains his theory of what makes up the atmosphere; the basis of his theory lies in the theory of elasticity of the teacher he had before Johann Bernoulli. He also states without proof a formula for the speed of propagation and derives from it numerical values of the correct order of magnitude for air.

A Survey Of Small Squares, Maxey Brooke May 975

A Survey Of Small Squares, Maxey Brooke

Word Ways

In a desperate attempt to make ever-larger word squares, logologists have succeeded only in producing monsters such as the ten-by-ten tautonymic word squares featured in the August and November 1973 issues of Word Ways. Is it not time to recall the intrinsic beauty and extreme versatility of smaller word squares -- say, those of size six-by-six or less? This article surveys a wide variety of such squares, taken from past issues of Word Ways, from Dmitri Borgmann's Language on Vacation (Scribner's, 1965), and from Martin Gardner's Mathematical Games column in Scientific American.

Long-Term Outcomes Of Low-Achieving Third Grade Readers, Emily Jordan, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter Oct 218

Long-Term Outcomes Of Low-Achieving Third Grade Readers, Emily Jordan, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter

Arkansas Education Reports

Research shows that students who demonstrate low reading achievement in 3rd grade have trouble catching back up to grade level and being successful in school, compared to their peers who demonstrate early proficiency (Fiester 2010; Hernandez 2011; Juel 1988). This report seeks to investigate what happens to Arkansas public school students who demonstrate low achievement in reading in 3rd grade. Reading scores from three cohorts of students are followed from 3rd grade until high school, beginning with data from the 2008-09 school year and continuing through 2016-17.

Parents' Interests And Abilities As Sources Of Young Children's Everyday Learning Opportunities, Carl J. J. Dunst 4320065 Nov 202

Parents' Interests And Abilities As Sources Of Young Children's Everyday Learning Opportunities, Carl J. J. Dunst 4320065

Journal of Family Strengths

Findings from a national survey of parents’ strengths (personal interests and individual abilities) and how interests and abilities were used as sources of young children’s everyday learning opportunities are reported. The participants were 368 parents of young children birth to 6 years of age residing in 49 of the 50 United States. Participants were asked to indicate if any of 70 everyday activities were personal interests or individual abilities, if their youngest children were routinely involved in the activities, and if involved, if their children learned new behavior or skills. Data analysis was guided by a transactional, participation-based paradigm where …
