Speech Contestation By Design: Democratizing Speech Governance By Ai, Niva Elkin-Koren, Mayaan Perel Jan 2023

Speech Contestation By Design: Democratizing Speech Governance By Ai, Niva Elkin-Koren, Mayaan Perel

Florida State University Law Review

The online elaboration of speech norms is enduring a decisive transformation, threatening the vital prospects of democratic contestation, which enable democracies to thrive. In this Article, we demonstrate how a critical space for social deliberation and negotiation of the desirable boundaries of free speech is "lost in translation" as we shift from governance by law to governance by Artificial Intelligence (Al). The configuration of AI speech filtering systems facilitates a frictionless flow of information-a signature trait of the digital economy, and of social media in particular. It is driven by a probabilistic decisionmaking process based on formal definitions and optimization …

Evaluation-Perception Of Site Attributes And Plant Species Selection In The Public Urban Green Space Of A Compact City, Man Yee, Caroline Law, Ling Chui Hui

Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)

Understanding citizens’ evaluation of public urban green space (UGS) attributes and plant species features can inform greenspace design to meet public expectations. This study evaluated the public’s responses to UGS attributes and plant species in Hong Kong using a questionnaire survey of 827 adult respondents. Principal component analysis followed by cluster analysis were applied to analyze the data. The respondents were differentiated into three groups (ecological, eclectic, and pragmatic users) based on the evaluations of UGS attributes. Additionally, three clusters (conservation supporters, all-round perfectionists, and safety defenders) were classified based on evaluating plant species features. Plant knowledge and gender were …

A Bounded Cumulative Hazard Model With A Change- Point According To A Threshold In A Covariate For Right-Censored Data, Fauzia Taweab, Noor Akma Ibrahim, Jayanthi Arasan

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In most recent clinical studies, the focus is on estimation of the proportion of patients who are cured and who will therefore never experience the event of interest again. This article investigates a survival model with cure fraction and change-point effect based on the bounded cumulative hazard model (BCH). The maximum likelihood approach to estimate the unknown parameters is used. A major difficulty here is that the likelihood function is not differentiable with respect to a change point parameter. To address this problem a smoothed likelihood approach is proposed. Simulation studies have been conducted in this study to assess the …

Improving Aks Algorithm. Proving The Simplicity Of Integers, O. Kozachok

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Agrawal-Kayal-Saxena (AKS) theorem was proved, from which the above-mentioned algorithm is directly derived. The study has shown that the problem of simplicity is in the complexity class P of polynomial problems. An advanced AKS algorithm is proposed, which will simplify the initial AKS algorithm and ensure its implementation to determine the simplicity of integers. To implement this task it is necessary to reduce algorithm computational complexity. The block diagram of the algorithm for performing the advanced AKS test is presented. The theorems for prime numbers presented in the form of polynomials were formulated and proved. The AKS algorithm consisting of …

Evaluating The Adhesion Response Of Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (Abs)/Thermoplastic Polyurethane (Tpu) Fused Interface Using Multiscale Simulation And Experiments, Jonathan T. Villada, Gideon A. Lyngdoh, Rakesh Paswan, Bolaji Oladipo, Sumanta Das

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

This paper implements reactive forcefield molecular dynamics (MD) simulation to evaluate the mechan- ical performance of the fusion bond line formed between acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), and ther- moplastic polyurethane (TPU). The simulated interfacial adhesion responses, as obtained from MD simulation, are further implemented as the interfacial properties between ABS and TPU in an upscaled cohesive zone-based finite element analysis (FEA) model for macroscopic response evaluation. Such upscaling enables fair comparison of the simulated macroscopic stress–strain response with experimen- tal results obtained for 3D printed ABS/TPU hybrid samples with a fusion-bonded interface. Overall, the stress–strain response predicted from a FEA-based …

How Can Visual Programing Be Used To Aid The Development Of A Structural Scheme Design Process Utilising Geometric Data Within An Architectural Revit Model?, Ed Carthy, Kieran Lakhera O'Shea

Reports

The early-stage structural scheme design of a building is a complex task requiring the collection of multiple information categories such as geometry, loading and materials. The collection and review of this information is traditionally conducted in a 2D environment. This is inefficient, time-consuming, and tedious. This paper provides a review of how structural engineers’ understanding and implementation of BIM has evolved significantly in recent years, validated by extant literature in areas such as BIM automation, visual programming, and structural optimisation in the structural engineering sector. Structural engineers are growing more aware that BIM provides a vast repository of data to …

The Sensitivity Of A Laplacian Family Of Ranking Methods, Claire S. Chang Jan 2023

The Sensitivity Of A Laplacian Family Of Ranking Methods, Claire S. Chang

HMC Senior Theses

Ranking from pairwise comparisons is a particularly rich subset of ranking problems. In this work, we focus on a family of ranking methods for pairwise comparisons which encompasses the well-known Massey, Colley, and Markov methods. We will accomplish two objectives to deepen our understanding of this family. First, we will consider its network diffusion interpretation. Second, we will analyze its sensitivity by studying the "maximal upset" where the direction of an arc between the highest and lowest ranked alternatives is flipped. Through these analyses, we will build intuition to answer the question "What are the characteristics of robust ranking methods?" …

Using Computational Fluid Dynamics And Optical Sensor Technology To Scale Cell Culture Platforms, Mandar Makwana Jan 2023

Using Computational Fluid Dynamics And Optical Sensor Technology To Scale Cell Culture Platforms, Mandar Makwana

KGI Theses and Dissertations

Different cell culture vessels ranging from micro scale to laboratory scale to commercial scale play critical role in upstream process development for biologics manufacturing. Based on the mode of operation, cell culture vessels have different hydrodynamic environments, making it challenging to scale. Integrated approaches using computational tools supported by experimental studies can overcome these challenges. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is one such tool that can simulate hydrodynamics within the cell culture vessels and can provide insights at macro and micro-scale. Accuracy of a CFD model significantly depends on the fluid model and assumptions. Traditionally, simple two-equation fluid models were developed …

Identifying Gendered Language, Shweta Soundararajan, Sarah Jane Delany Jan 2023

Identifying Gendered Language, Shweta Soundararajan, Sarah Jane Delany

Academic Posters Collection

Gendered language refers to the use of words that indicate the gender of an individual. It can be explicit, where the gender is directly implied by the specific words used (e.g., mother, she, man), or it can be implicit, where societal roles and behaviors convey a person's gender. For example, expectations that women display communal traits (e.g., affectionate, caring, gentle) and men display agentic traits (e.g., assertive, competitive, decisive). The presence of gendered language in natural language processing (NLP) systems can reinforce gender stereotypes and bias. Our work introduces an approach to creating gendered language datasets using ChatGPT. These datasets …

Neural And Behavioral Evolution In An Eavesdropper With A Rapidly Evolving Host, Aaron W. Wikle Jan 2023

Neural And Behavioral Evolution In An Eavesdropper With A Rapidly Evolving Host, Aaron W. Wikle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The diversification of animal communication systems is driven by many interacting factors. Unintended receivers play an important part in this process, yet little is known about their role in signal evolution. Flies of the genus Ormia are parasitoids of crickets and rely on acoustic cues to locate hosts. In Hawaii, selection imposed by Ormia ochracea has led to recent and rapid diversification in the songs of their host. Here, we compare neural and behavioral responses of Hawaiian flies to those of an ancestral population to understand the role of parasitoid sensory and behavioral variation in the evolution of host songs. …
