A Generalized Class Of Circular Designs Strongly Balanced For Neighbor Effects, Hurria Ali, Mohammad Nasir, Muhammad Sajid Rashid, Khadija Noreen, Rashid Ahmed, Mahmood Ul Hassan

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

Minimal strongly balanced neighbor designs are useful (i) to minimize the bias due to neighbor effects economically, and (ii) to estimate the direct effect and neighbor effects independently. Such designs can easily be obtained for v odd and are available in literature. In this article, A generalized class of minimal circular designs strongly balanced for neighbor effects in blocks of equal and two different sizes have been constructed in which only v/2 unordered pairs of treatments do not appear as neighbors, where v is the number of treatments.

The Use Of Teaching Methods And Strategies And How They Affect The Student And Teacher Classroom Dynamics, Peyton Hargrove Jan 2023

The Use Of Teaching Methods And Strategies And How They Affect The Student And Teacher Classroom Dynamics, Peyton Hargrove

Integrated Studies

There are many different teaching methods and strategies that are used in pedagogy, and it is critical that teachers understand and know the benefits and negatives of each method. Teaching methods can affect classroom dynamics, so knowledge of these methods can enhance or diminish interaction between students and teachers in a classroom. Although there is no evidence that one teaching method is more effective than the others, studies have shown that there are some methods that have greater impact on classroom dynamics. The results of the studies in this literature review show that the use of methods such as differentiation, …

Sustaining Critical Approaches To Translanguaging In Education: A Contextual Framework, Anna Mendoza, Laura Hamman-Ortiz, Zhongfeng Tian, Shakina Rajendram, Kevin W.H. Tai, Wing Yee Jenifer Ho, Pramod K. Sah

College of Education Faculty Publications

Translanguaging remains a timely and important topic in bi/multilingual education. The most recent turn in translanguaging scholarship involves attention to translanguaging in context in response to critiques of translanguaging as a universally empowering educational practice. In this paper, seven early career translanguaging scholars propose a framework for researching translanguaging “in context,” drawing on the Douglas Fir Group's (2016) transdisciplinary framework for language acquisition. Examining translanguaging in context entails paying attention to who in a classroom wields power, as a result of their greater proficiency in societally valued languages, their more “standard” ways of speaking these languages, their greater familiarity with …

Changing Blow Fly (Diptera: Calliphoridae) Populations In Orlando, Florida, United States, Amanda Roe, Russell J. Barnes, Leon G. Higley, Neal H. Haskell

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Blow flies (Diptera: Calliphoridae) were collected from various carrion baits in Orlando, Florida over 2 periods: Jun 2009 to Sep 2009 and Apr 2010 to Oct 2010. In a previous study conducted from 2002 to 2004 the dominant blow fly in Orlando, Florida, was Lucilia coeruleiviridis Macquart (Gruner et al. 2007). This collection documents a shift to Chrysomya megacephala Fabricius, as the most dominant blow fly species found in Orlando, Florida in 2009 to 2010. These field results have potential forensic implications, particularly in the analysis of cold cases.

Differentially Private Stochastic Convex Optimization In (Non)-Euclidean Space Revisited, Jinyan Su, Changhong Zhao, Di Wang

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

In this paper, we revisit the problem of Differentially Private Stochastic Convex Optimization (DP-SCO) in Euclidean and general `dp spaces. Specifically, we focus on three settings that are still far from well understood: (1) DP-SCO over a constrained and bounded (convex) set in Euclidean space; (2) unconstrained DP-SCO in `dp space; (3) DP-SCO with heavy-tailed data over a constrained and bounded set in `dp space. For problem (1), for both convex and strongly convex loss functions, we propose methods whose outputs could achieve (expected) excess population risks that are only dependent on the Gaussian width of the constraint set, rather …

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Evaluating the influence of grass or broadleaf cover crops on soil health measurements is common in the northern US Midwest. However, the comparison among different cover crop mixtures, including blends of both grass and broadleaf species is limited. In 2018–2020, cover crop experiments were conducted in South Dakota at 11 site-years. Cover crops were planted in the summer after small grains harvest as mixtures of dominantly grasses or broadleaves, a 50/50 grass/broadleaf mixture, and a no cover crop control. Soil and above-ground plant residue samples were collected in the fall before winter termination and in the spring before corn planting. …

Investigating The Impacts Of Connected Vehicles On Driving Aggressiveness And Situational Awareness In Highway Crash Scenarios: A Driving Simulator Study, Abdalziz Alruwaili

College of Engineering & Technology (Batten) Posters

Psychological factors such as aggressiveness and situational awareness can impact driving performance. Connected vehicles (CV), equipped with advanced sensors and able to communicate safety messages to drivers, have the potential to influence driving performance by altering drivers’ aggressiveness and situational awareness. This paper aims to investigate the impacts of the CVs on driving aggressiveness and situational awareness in highway crash scenarios where a primary crash has already occurred, and a second crash may occur as a result. To achieve this goal, a driving simulator experiment was conducted, and questionnaires focused on driving aggressiveness and CV effectiveness were distributed. Structural equation …

Scalable Quantum Edge Detection Method For D-Nisq Imaging Simulations: Use Cases From Nuclear Physics And Medical Image Computing, Emmanuel Billias, Nikos Chrisochoides

The Graduate School Posters

Edge Detection is one of the computationally intensive modules in image analysis. It is used to find important landmarks by identifying a significant change (or “edge”) between pixels and voxels. We present a hybrid Quantum Edge Detection method by improving three aspects of an existing widely referenced implementation, which for our use cases generates incomprehensible results for the type and size of images we are required to process. Our contributions are in the pre- and post-processing (i.e., classical phase) and a quantum edge detection circuit: (1) we use space- filling curves to eliminate image artifacts introduced by the image decomposition, …

With the increased spread of misinformation on online platforms and the popularity of AI-generated text, there is a critical need to detect human perception regarding the truthfulness of news. Users’ believability in a news item influences the reading and sharing of that news. Hence, in order to reduce the spread of fake news online, it is important to understand how users' engagement with fake and real news and users' perceived believability impact their behavioral and physiological factors. In this work, we study human eye movements based on the truthfulness of news and their perceived believability. Using the publicly available FakeNewsPerception …

Metaenhance: Metadata Quality Improvement For Electronic Theses And Dissertations, Muntabir H. Choudhury, Lamia Salsabil, Himarsha R. Jayanetti, Jian Wu

College of Sciences Posters

Metadata quality is crucial for digital objects to be discovered through digital library interfaces. Although DL systems have adopted Dublin Core to standardize metadata formats (e.g., ETD-MS v1.11), the metadata of digital objects may contain incomplete, inconsistent, and incorrect values [1]. Most existing frameworks to improve metadata quality rely on crowdsourced correction approaches, e.g., [2]. Such methods are usually slow and biased toward documents that are more discoverable by users. Artificial intelligence (AI) based methods can be adopted to overcome this limit by automatically detecting, correcting, and canonicalizing the metadata, featuring quick and unbiased responses to document metadata. …

X-Disetrac: Distributed Eye-Tracking With Extended Realities, Bhanuka Mahanama, Sampath Jayarathna

College of Sciences Posters

Humans use heterogeneous collaboration mediums such as in-person, online, and extended realities for day-to-day activities. Identifying patterns in viewpoints and pupillary responses (a.k.a eye-tracking data) provide informative cues on individual and collective behavior during collaborative tasks. Despite the increasing ubiquity of these different mediums, the aggregation and analysis of eye-tracking data in heterogeneous collaborative environments remain unexplored. Our study proposes X-DisETrac: Extended Distributed Eye Tracking, a versatile framework for eye tracking in heterogeneous environments. Our approach tackles the complexity by establishing a platform-agnostic communication protocol encompassing three data streams to simplify data aggregation and …
