Software metrics capture information about software development processes and products. These metrics support decision-making, e.g., in team management or dependency selection. However, existing metrics tools measure only a snapshot of a software project. Little attention has been given to enabling engineers to reason about metric trends over time -- longitudinal metrics that give insight about process, not just product. In this work, we present PRiME (PRocess MEtrics), a tool for computing and visualizing process metrics. The currently-supported metrics include productivity, issue density, issue spoilage, and bus factor. We illustrate the value of longitudinal data and conclude with a research agenda. …

Survey On Outdoor Navigation Applications For People With Visual Impairment, Fatmaelzahraa Eltaher Ph.D, Luis Miralles-Pechuán, Jane Courtney, Susan Mckeever

Datasets

Outdoor navigation is a very challenging activity for People who suffer from Blindness or Visually Impairment (PBVI). Having examined the current literature, we conclude that there are very few publications providing a nuanced understanding of how PBVI undertake a journey in an outdoor environment and what their main challenges and obstacles are. To throw some light on this gap, we conducted a questionnaire in collaboration with the National Council for the Blind Ireland (NCBI) for 49 PBVI. Our questionnaire gathers information about key aspects related to PBVI outdoor navigation such as support tools/devices, hazards, journey preparation, crossing roads, and understanding …

Ecological Complexity And Avoiding Pest Resurgence: Intuitions From Mathematical Ecology, Theresa Ong, John H. Vandermeer Jan 2023

Ecological Complexity And Avoiding Pest Resurgence: Intuitions From Mathematical Ecology, Theresa Ong, John H. Vandermeer

Dartmouth Scholarship

Pest resurgence is defined by a predictable increase in pests following declines resulting from the implementation of pest management practices. This phenomenon is notorious; familiar in biblical references to cyclical plagues of locust and discussions of pesticide treadmills, where pests resurge following the evolution of pesticide resistance. Targeted “silver-bullet” approaches, whether chemical, mechanical, biological, or genetic in nature, apply a reductionist lens toward the removal of a specific target pest, often ignoring ecological context, by application of said silver-bullet. In this review article, we cover how past and recent developments in theoretical ecology and complex systems dynamics provide a general …

How Hurricanes Impact Florida's Tourism Industry, Arthur Huang Jan 2023

How Hurricanes Impact Florida's Tourism Industry, Arthur Huang

Rosen Research Review

Almost every year, hurricanes bear down upon the state of Florida. The storms appear to be growing in occurrence and severity. While the media cover the damage and death toll, the impacts on the state's critical tourism sector remain largely anecdotal. The full story lies buried in data. Dr. Arthur Huang from UCF's Rosen College of Hospitality Management has investigated different data sets to understand the impact of hurricanes on the tourism industry. What has been uncovered has significance not only for Florida but for tourism sectors elsewhere affected by these giant storms.

Gesture-Based American Sign Language (Asl) Translation System, Kayleigh Moore, Stefano Pecile, Mahdi Yazdanpour Jan 2023

Gesture-Based American Sign Language (Asl) Translation System, Kayleigh Moore, Stefano Pecile, Mahdi Yazdanpour

Posters-at-the-Capitol

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 5% of the world's population experiences severe hearing loss. Approximately 9 million people in the U.S. are either functionally deaf or have mild-to-severe hearing loss. In this research, we designed and implemented a translation interface which turns American Sign Language (ASL) gestures captured from a pair of soft robotic gloves into text and speech instantaneously.

We used a combination of flex sensors, tactile sensors, and accelerometers to recognize hand gestures and to record hand and fingers positions, movements, and orientations. The digitized captured gestures were then sent to our proposed translation interface …

Strategies For Identifying Important Residues In The Trna Modification Protein Trm732, Alex K. Mullins, Natalie N. Creech, Holly Funk, Michael Guy

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Post-transcriptional tRNA modifications are required for efficient protein translation. In yeast, the Trm7 methyltransferase forms a complex with Trm732 to modify tRNA at position 32. In humans, lack of the human homolog for Trm7, FTSJ1, causes intellectual disability. Little is known about the function of Trm732, although we have shown that one conserved motif in Trm732 is important for tRNA modification. We have identified other residues important for function using two strategies. First, we compared Trm732 proteins of different organisms using protein alignments to determine conserved regions to mutate for testing. We have generated four new Trm732 variants and have …

Adapting A Narrative Curriculum To A Remote Format In The Context Of Socially Distanced Middle School Education Resulting From Covid-19, Jeremiah Pina, Rebecca Mazur, Glenn Ellis, Al Rudnitsky, Beth Mcginnis-Cavanaugh, Sonia Ellis, Isabel Huff, Crystal Ford

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

This paper describes the development of two versions of an NGSS-aligned principles of engineering design unit for use in middle schools. By employing a narrative framework that can help students to connect more deeply with the human contexts and consequences of the engineering design process, our goal was to enhance students’ cognitive and emotional engagement in the learning of engineering design concepts. We first detail the design of an initial version of the unit, titled The Survivorama, which used narrative to enrich a primarily traditional, in-person teaching approach. We then describe the adapted version of the unit, titled the Molasses …

An Articulate Heart Attack Detection System Using Mine Blast Optimization (Mbo) Based Multilayer Perceptron Neural Network (Mlpnn) Model, N Rajesh Pandian, D Shanth, N Selvaganesh

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

The creation of an automated system for heart disease detection was once one of the more common undertakings in the healthcare industries. For this purpose, the different types of bigdata analytics technologies are developed inthe conventional works to predict the heart disease. Still, it limits with the problems associated to the elements of high complexity, time consumption, over fitting, and mis-prediction results.Because the previous methods did not optimizethe best features, they did not give accurate results in heart attackdetection, so the system is needed to control thedeath ratio. Therefore, the proposed work objects to implement a novel Mine Blast Optimization (MBO) …

Saint Augustine, Music, And God, Lois Eveleth Jan 2023

Saint Augustine, Music, And God, Lois Eveleth

Faculty and Staff - Articles & Papers

Concerned that his love of music might only strengthen his sensuality and thus jeopardize his conversion to Christianity, Saint Augustine produced "De Musica". This saving response identified "numeri" (numbers or ratios) existing in music and serving as structures placed in the human soul by God to guide souls through finite time into eternity. Such structures were congruent with time itself and with the "numeri" which guided the cosmos. Added to this project was the task of rejecting the ancient notion of time as cyclical.

Computation Of The Stabilizing Solution To Nash-Riccati Equations Jan 2023

Computation Of The Stabilizing Solution To Nash-Riccati Equations

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

Consider a new iterative scheme of linearized Newton’s method to calculate the minimal nonnegativesolution of a nonsymmetric Riccati equation associated with a game model. The minimal solution is important to findNash strategies in a game for positive systems. The Newton procedure is applied to work out a nonnegative solutionof this type of equations. Our proposal is effective one because it employs small number of matrix multiplicationat each iteration step and there is a variant to exploit the block structure of matrix coefficients of the Nash-Riccatiequation. Moreover, in this reason, it is easy to extend the proposed iterative modification depending on …

Inter-Seasonal Comparison Of Acoustic Propagation In A Thalassia Testudinum Seagrass Meadow In A Shallow Sub-Tropical Lagoon, Kevin M. Lee, Megan S. Ballard, Andrew R. Mcneese, Preston S. Wilson, Gabriel R. Venegas, Mathew C. Zeh, Abdullah Rahman Jan 2023

Inter-Seasonal Comparison Of Acoustic Propagation In A Thalassia Testudinum Seagrass Meadow In A Shallow Sub-Tropical Lagoon, Kevin M. Lee, Megan S. Ballard, Andrew R. Mcneese, Preston S. Wilson, Gabriel R. Venegas, Mathew C. Zeh, Abdullah Rahman

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Acoustic propagation measurements were collected in a seagrass meadow in a shallow lagoon for periods of over 65 h in winter and 93 h in summer. A bottom-deployed sound source transmitted chirps (0.1–100 kHz) every 10 min that were received on a four-receiver horizontal hydrophone array. Oceanographic probes measured various environmental parameters. Daytime broadband acoustic attenuation was 2.4 dB greater in summer than winter, and the median received acoustic energy levels were 8.4 dB lower in summer compared to winter. These differences were attributed in part to seasonal changes in photosynthesis bubble production and above-ground seagrass biomass.

Publications

The tactile pressure sensor is of great significance in flexible electronics, but sensitivity customization over the required working range with high linearity still remains a critical challenge. Despite numerous efforts to achieve high sensitivity and a wide working range, most sensitive microstructures tend to be obtained only by inverting naturally existing templates without rational design based on fundamental contact principles or models for piezoresistive pressure sensors. Here, a positive design strategy with a hyperelastic model and a Hertzian contact model for comparison was proposed to develop a flexible pressure sensor with highly customizable linear sensitivity and linearity, in which the …

Adding Fe3O4 nanoparticles to composites of [Fe(Htrz)2(trz)](BF4) spin-crossover polymer and polyaniline (PANI) drives a phase separation of both and restores the molecular structure and cooperative effects of the spin-crossover polymer without compromising the increased conductivity gained through the addition of PANI. We observe an increased on-off ratio for the DC conductivity owing to an enlarged off state resistivity and a 20 times larger AC conductivity of the on state compared with DC values. The Fe3O4 nanoparticles, primarily confined to the [Fe(Htrz)2(trz)](BF4) phase, are ferromagnetically coupled to …

Eamsa 512: New 512 Bits Encryption Algorithm Based On Modified Salsa20, Nashwan Dheyaa Zaki, Jolan Rokan Naif, Israa S. Ahmed, Haider K. Hoomod

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

This paper presents the 512-bit encryption algorithm based on modified SALSA20 using an 11-dimensional chaoticsystem used for generating the keys for the proposed encryptionalgorithm. Chaotic keys are derived from a combination of two systems, one with six dimensions and the other with five. These keys are used in different operations like shifting, Xoring, and encryption steps in the new proposed algorithm. The proposedalgorithm consists of a combination of two parallel parts: Salsa20 and S boxes with chaos keys. The proposed system takes 512 bits of the plaintext, which will be split into two 256-bit parts, the left part encrypted with …

Kernel Semi-Parametric Model Improvement Based On Quasi-Oppositional Learning Pelican Optimization Algorithm, Firas Ahmed Yonis Al-Taie, Omar Saber Qasim, Zakariya Yahya Algamal

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

Statistical modeling plays a critical role in various scientific fields as it offers an understanding of how the response variable of interest is linked to a range of explanatory variables. However, selecting the best model beforehand is not easy. To address this issue, we conducted a study to explore the selection of an appropriate hyper-parameter for kernel semi-parametric regression. We used a quasi-oppositional learning pelican optimization algorithm technique to choose the smoothness parameter. Our simulation results showed that our proposed methodology outperformed its competitors in terms of mean squared error (MSE). Moreover, our suggested quasi-oppositional learning pelican optimization technique demonstrated …

Scalable Skill-Oriented Task Allocation In Crowdsourcing Within A Serverless Ecosystem, Biswajeet Sethi, Riya Samanta, Soumya K. Ghosh, Sajal K. Das

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Allocating the most competent crowdworkers to each upcoming task is a fundamental challenge in crowdsourcing. The mechanism becomes complicated when the arriving tasks require a high level of expertise within a constrained budget. The validation of skill matching between tasks and crowdworkers adds a new dimension to the traditional problem of task allocation. In addition, in real-world scenarios, the influx of both tasks and workers is dynamic, making it nearly impossible to predict the precise amount of computational resources required for the crowdsourcing platform to operate efficiently. Serverless computing is a new pay-per-use, auto-scalable, Function-as-a-Service based model, that ensures parallel …

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

As governments and non-state actors strive to minimize global warming, a primary strategy is the decarbonization of power systems which will require a massive increase in renewable electricity generation. Leading energy agencies forecast a doubling of global hydropower capacity as part of that necessary expansion of renewables. While hydropower provides generally low-carbon generation and can integrate variable renewables, such as wind and solar, into electrical grids, hydropower dams are one of the primary reasons that only one-third of the world’s major rivers remain free-flowing. This loss of free-flowing rivers has contributed to dramatic declines of migratory fish and sediment delivery …
