Tanzania Journal of Science
Land use land cover (LULC) changes affect the planet's energy balance and region's climate. Land Surface Temperature (LST) is a vital indicator of this change. Studies in Dar es Salaam Metropolitan City have investigated LST and its relationships with building heights and densities, urban heat islands, spectral indices, and urban morphological determinants. The present study used cross-sectional profiles, chord diagrams, and simple linear regression models to examine the influence of LULC changes on the LST in Dar es Salaam Metropolitan City (DMC). LST was extracted from Landsat 5 TM and 8 OLI/TIRS images for 1995, 2009, and 2017. LULC was …

Near-Ir Spectroscopic Analysis Of The Primary Volatile Composition Of Long And Short-Period Comets, Younas Khan
Near-Ir Spectroscopic Analysis Of The Primary Volatile Composition Of Long And Short-Period Comets, Younas Khan
Dissertations
Comets are among the most well-preserved objects that formed in the protosolar nebula ∼4.5 Gyr ago. Hence, they are important for understanding various aspects of the formation, evolution, and habitability of the solar system. Multiple primary volatiles (molecules directly sublimating into the coma from the nucleus) emit via rovibrational transitions in the near-IR, providing opportunities to calculate their abundances. To date, only ∼50 comets have been characterized for their primary volatiles, with the short-period Jupiter-family comets (JFCs) being significantly underrepresented. In contrast, hundreds of comets have been sampled at optical/UV wavelengths, primarily for the composition of daughter species, leading to …

Fractional Charge Concept Opened Gates For New Ideas On Composition Of Matter, Polievkt Perov
College of Arts & Sciences Faculty Works
Before the concept of quarks with fractional electric charges was introduced, the electron charge magnitude e was considered as the smallest amount of charge in nature so the charge of any object could be only an integer number of ± e. Then it was suggested that the proton and neutrons are composed of quarks with the fractional charges, combined in such a way that the total charge of a proton occurred to be that same known charge +e, and the charge of a neutron was zero. We suggest expanding that fruitful concept of fractional charges to build structural models of …

Modelling Multivariate Dependence Among Cyber Risks, Oliveira Ann Gyamfua Darkwah
Theses and Dissertations
Over the years, there have significant number of cyber attacks in various sectors causing losses to those sectors. We study the multivariate dependence of the cyber risks among these sectors by developing an iterative algorithm using copulas to estimate cyber risks in each sector by measuring the interdependencies and intradependencies among the sectors. The prediction performance of the proposed algorithm shows that the algorithm is superior to other methods.

The 15 yr pulsar timing data set collected by the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) shows positive evidence for the presence of a low-frequency gravitational-wave (GW) background. In this paper, we investigate potential cosmological interpretations of this signal, specifically cosmic inflation, scalar-induced GWs, first-order phase transitions, cosmic strings, and domain walls. We find that, with the exception of stable cosmic strings of field theory origin, all these models can reproduce the observed signal. When compared to the standard interpretation in terms of inspiraling supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs), many cosmological models seem to provide a better fit …

We investigate dust attenuation and its dependence on viewing angle for 308 star-forming galaxies at 1.3 ≤ z ≤ 2.6 from the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field survey. We divide galaxies with a detected Hα emission line and coverage of Hβ into eight groups by stellar mass, star formation rate (SFR), and inclination (i.e., axis ratio), and we then stack their spectra. From each stack, we measure the Balmer decrement and gas-phase metallicity, and then we compute the median A V and UV continuum spectral slope (β). First, we find that none of the dust properties (Balmer decrement, A V, or …

In order to study the intrusion range and degree of subway stray current into the AC power grid, a mathematical model of stray current which is based on the degradation of insulation performance of rail insulation fasteners under actual operation is established, and the stray current leakage of each sleeper is derived. The subway stray current is discretized into a finite point current source according to the number of sleepers, and the Green's function is solved based on the complex image method. The ground potential distribution calculation model caused by the subway stray current is also established, and the commercial …

Recurrent outbreaks of zoonotic infectious diseases highlight the importance of considering the interconnections between human, animal, and environmental health in disease prevention and control. This has given rise to the concept of One Health, which recognizes the interconnectedness of between human and animal health within their ecosystems. As a contribution to the One Health approach, this study aims to develop an indicator system to model the facilitation of the spread of zoonotic diseases. Initially, a literature review was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement to identify relevant indicators related to One Health. The …
