Magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) with conventional bulk ferromagnets separated by a nonmagnetic insulating layer are key building blocks in spintronics for magnetic sensors and memory. A radically different approach of using atomically-thin van der Waals (vdW) materials in MTJs is expected to boost their figure of merit, the tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR), while relaxing the lattice-matching requirements from the epitaxial growth and supporting high-quality integration of dissimilar materials with atomically-sharp interfaces. We report TMR up to 192% at 10 K in all-vdW Fe3GeTe2/GaSe/Fe3GeTe2 MTJs. Remarkably, instead of the usual insulating spacer, this large TMR …

International Journal of Speleology

The Prokletije Mountains/Albanian Alps are the highest part of the Dinaric Mountains. Paradoxically, these mountains and their cave areas remain among the most enigmatic in Europe, having only recently become subjects of scientific research and cave exploration. This paper focuses on the Kolata and Greben massifs, where the highest, and thus the oldest, cave systems are located. Through the analysis of heavy mineral composition, the apatite-tourmaline index, and cluster analysis for mineralogical composition and uranium isotopic data, it becomes possible to identify the source areas for the cave clastic deposits. It also allow to distinguish multiple paleoflow directions, each corresponding …

Research Conference 2023: Becoming Lifelong Learners. Proceedings And Program, Kylie Burns (Ed.)

2021-2030 ACER Research Conferences

We know learning in the early years sets the foundations for people’s ongoing academic, cognitive and socio-emotional development. Education across those formative first 12 years is currently segmented, with children often starting fresh in new systems. How can each of us make learning in the early childhood and primary years more effective? Research Conference 2023 will examine research around how we can improve the continuity of learning from birth to 12 years. It will bring together leading international and Australian researchers to provide insights into the best ways to identify, conceptualise, develop and assess these new linkages for learning.

Transdisciplinary Stem Enactment: An Exploratory Case Study In The Queensland Context, Kristie Schulz

2021-2030 ACER Research Conferences

Enacting STEM education in Australian schools is an ambitious task, in a climate of unclear definitions and little implementation advice. Should STEM education simply refer to an umbrella-term of subjects that Australian students need to improve in, or could a cross-disciplinary pedagogy that engages students in authentic problem-solving be realised? This poster outlines a project in which Parklands Christian College designed and enacted a transdisciplinary student-centred ideology of STEM education in 2017. The program has continually evolved using a transdisciplinary pedagogical framework.

Are Scientific Memes Motivating And Does Public Sharing Affect Motivation?, Virginia Clinton-Lisell, Alison E. Kelly

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications

In recent years, renewable assignments, or student creations that have value outside of a course, have received considerable attention. However, there is little theoretically grounded inquiry into students’ motivation for renewable assignments such as scientific memes. Moreover, it is unknown how public sharing of renewable assignments affects students’ perceived value and learning from coursework. In addition, public sharing could logically affect students’ pride and anxiety related to the renewable assignment, but this lacks empirical testing. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of public sharing of renewable assignments on students’ perceived value, learning, pride, and anxiety relevant …

The Wealth Of Our Commonwealth: Money, Capital, And Finance In A Productive Commercial Republic, Robert Hockett Sep 2023

The Wealth Of Our Commonwealth: Money, Capital, And Finance In A Productive Commercial Republic, Robert Hockett

The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review

There is a share of the investment capital available in any society that is generated by the public. In contemporary societies with well-developed payment systems and effective public governance, this share tends to grow large in comparison to that originated by non-public sources, the latter is intermediated and thus must be pre-accumulated, while the former is generated and is the source of what is accumulated. In spite of these truths, the US outsources management of its public capital stock to private sector financial institutions. This is a practice that a host of underappreciated collective action predicaments endemic to decentralized market …

Integrating Glycolysis, Citric Acid Cycle, Pentose Phosphate Pathway, And Fatty Acid Beta‑Oxidation Into A Single Computational Model, Sylwester M. Kloska, Krzysztof Pałczyński, Tomasz Marciniak, Tomasz Talaśka, Beata J. Wysocki, Paul H. Davis, Tadeusz A. Wysocki

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

The metabolic network of a living cell is highly intricate and involves complex interactions between various pathways. In this study, we propose a computational model that integrates glycolysis, the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP), the fatty acids beta-oxidation, and the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA cycle) using queueing theory. The model utilizes literature data on metabolite concentrations and enzyme kinetic constants to calculate the probabilities of individual reactions occurring on a microscopic scale, which can be viewed as the reaction rates on a macroscopic scale. However, it should be noted that the model has some limitations, including not accounting for all the …

Race And Income As Predictors Of Trust In Flood Mitigation Strategies, Wendy Nathaly Sangucho Loachamin Sep 2023

Race And Income As Predictors Of Trust In Flood Mitigation Strategies, Wendy Nathaly Sangucho Loachamin

Dissertations and Theses

Trust plays a central role in coastal flooding management because the support or opposition to costly mitigation strategies depends, in part, on how much stakeholders trust in the effectiveness of these strategies. Despite the importance of trust in the approval of flood mitigation strategies, trust is rarely measured. Furthermore, Environmental Justice (EJ) studies have consistently shown that BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) and low-income communities are more vulnerable to environmental hazards. Therefore, if these communities are more exposed to flooding, we hypothesize they will have less trust in flood mitigation strategies to protect them; yet trust is understudied …

Many-Valued Coalgebraic Logic: From Boolean Algebras To Primal Varieties, Alexander Kurz, Wolfgang Poiger Sep 2023

Many-Valued Coalgebraic Logic: From Boolean Algebras To Primal Varieties, Alexander Kurz, Wolfgang Poiger

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

We study many-valued coalgebraic logics with primal algebras of truth-degrees. We describe a way to lift algebraic semantics of classical coalgebraic logics, given by an endofunctor on the variety of Boolean algebras, to this many-valued setting, and we show that many important properties of the original logic are inherited by its lifting. Then, we deal with the problem of obtaining a concrete axiomatic presentation of the variety of algebras for this lifted logic, given that we know one for the original one. We solve this problem for a class of presentations which behaves well with respect to a lattice structure …

Learning In Context: Exploring Student Cognitive Maps, Kevin Davis, Eric J. Tucker Sep 2023

Learning In Context: Exploring Student Cognitive Maps, Kevin Davis, Eric J. Tucker

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

This study examines how concept-by-concept learning can provide students with a robust conceptual cognitive map for the area under study. In-context learning indicates that students understand how individual concepts are related and apply to real-world situations. Our results show that insights can be gained from understanding the degree of in-context learning in a course. Faculty can use this information to guide instruction in real time and make curriculum adjustments. This approach is also helpful because it can be replicated in any course to develop knowledge about students’ conceptual understanding.

Comparative Investigations On Microextraction And Conventional Air Sampling Techniques: Challenges And Future Directions, Firoz Ahmed, Mehedi Hasan Roni, Ashiqur Rahman, Sayed M A Salam

Al-Bahir

Microextraction technique (e.g., solid phase microextraction, thin film microextraction, in-tube extraction) brings a revolutionary change in air sampling techniques over the recent few years. This advanced technique exhibits a high pollutant extraction rate, a low retention time, and a lower error margin compared to conventional air sampling techniques. The accuracy range of microextraction technique (MET) was recorded ~90-95% to isolate the volatile organic components, oxygenated and halogenated carbon particles from the air. However, the efficiency of MET increases additional >3-5% when employed by coupled with gas chromatography or gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The conventional sampling techniques (e.g., bag sampling, grab sampling) …

Stochastic Differential Equations With Transformed Anticipating Conditions, John Abonongo, Patrick Chidzalo Sep 2023

Stochastic Differential Equations With Transformed Anticipating Conditions, John Abonongo, Patrick Chidzalo

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

Stochastic differential equations can be specified with anticipatory initial value constraints (IVC) which is useful in many applications where future filtration is known. However, such specification leads to different results than those used in the usual Itoˆ’s calculus, and choice of transformations, at IVC, affects the orientation of equivalent isometry moments and related quantities. To solve this problem, the paper analyzes linear stochastic differential equations with anticipatory initial value constraints specified by an exponential transformation. The conditions for general solutions when such function is defined are derived from Itoˆ’s lemma, Taylor, and Fourier Series. Exact solutions are found using the …

Modeling Survival Distributions For Certain Real-World Applications Using Nonparametric Hypothesis Testing, M. E. Bakr, Arwa M. Alsahangiti, A. M. Gadallah

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

By analyzing the failure behavior of the recorded survival data, we expect to analyze the different processing strategies or functionality of the tools or systems used in this nonparametric statistical test. It is anticipated that the test data would either behave exponentially or like the NBUE Property. If the survival results are NBUE, it is anticipated that the suggested treatment plan would be successful. Contrarily, As shown in the application section, if the data are exponential, the suggested treatment plan wont have any positive or negative consequences on patients. We evaluated the suggested tests efficacy and power for both complete …

R-Norm Information Measure With Applications In Multi Criteria Decision Making Technique Under Intuitionistic Fuzzy Set Environment, Rukaya Jamil, Safina Peerzada, Saima Manzoor, M. A. K. Baig

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

The main aim of this research article is to define a new information measure for quantifying fuzziness in the intuitionistic fuzzy set environment. For this purpose, we present R-norm intuitionistic fuzzy measure that quantifies the amount of vagueness or fuzziness of a particular fuzzy set. We prove that this measure is a valid measure of intuitionistic fuzzy entropy by making it satisfy essential properties. Also, some mathematical properties are used to check the validation of the measure. In the end, a practical example of decision-making is illustrated in terms of Multi Criteria Decision Making problem that presents the application of …

Disease Progression Modelling Of Alzheimer's Disease Using Probabilistic Principal Components Analysis, Martin Saint-Jalmes, Victor Fedyashov, Daniel Beck, Timothy Baldwin, Noel G. Faux, Pierrick Bourgeat, Jurgen Fripp, Colin L. Masters, Benjamin Goudey

Natural Language Processing Faculty Publications

The recent biological redefinition of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) has spurred the development of statistical models that relate changes in biomarkers with neurodegeneration and worsening condition linked to AD. The ability to measure such changes may facilitate earlier diagnoses for affected individuals and help in monitoring the evolution of their condition. Amongst such statistical tools, disease progression models (DPMs) are quantitative, data-driven methods that specifically attempt to describe the temporal dynamics of biomarkers relevant to AD. Due to the heterogeneous nature of this disease, with patients of similar age experiencing different AD-related changes, a challenge facing longitudinal mixed-effects-based DPMs is the …

Reversibility Of Stranded Cellular Automata, Allyn Loyd Sep 2023

Reversibility Of Stranded Cellular Automata, Allyn Loyd

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

Cellular automata, such as the Stranded Cellular Automaton (SCA) model created by Joshua and Lana Holden, can be used to model weaving patterns. Similar models can be constructed to model macrame patterns, where strands are knotted together. If a rule is injective, then it is reversible. If a rule is surjective, then every configuration has at least one predecessor. In this paper, we will discuss the injectivity and surjectivity of several new SCA models in order to find reversible rules. We will also analyze the number of configurations with no predecessors and the number of configurations that map to the …
