Patient-Specific Multi-Scale, Multi-Physics Simulations Of Human Uterine Contractions And Peristalsis During Pregnancy And The Menstrual Cycle, Yiqi Lin
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Uterine contractions during pregnancy drive birth, and peristalsis during menstrual cycles not only expel menstrual blood, but also play significant roles in both sperm transport and gynecological disorders. The present work encompasses an in-depth exploration into the electrophysiology, biomechanics, and fluid dynamics of these activities. We introduce an advanced multiscale dynamic electrophysiology model that delves into cellular-level details, using both electromyography (EMG) and cell force generation methods. An innovative ionic channel model integrates individual ionic channel knowledge and clinical data from the human myometrium. This model accurately represents action potentials and their interactions with oxytocin, while an associated mechanical force …
Modeling Multiscale Mechanobiological Modulation Of Collective Cell Migration, Jairaj Mathur
Modeling Multiscale Mechanobiological Modulation Of Collective Cell Migration, Jairaj Mathur
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Cells constantly interact with and interpret their environment as they migrate, a process integral to an array of vital physiological events within the body. One such form of cellular migration that is of particular significance is collective migration, a coordinated and group-based movement that is central to various biological processes such as embryogenesis, tissue repair, and cancer metastasis. As these cells navigate through the body, they receive and process a wide array of inputs and cues from their surroundings that guide their direction and velocity. These cues are not simply instantaneous or immediate, they span across time and length, presenting …

We Designed A Board Game About The Future Of New York City!, Richard Reiss
Sustainability Seminar Series
Rapid, human-induced climate change presents a crisis that involves everyone, yet few people feel they have any influence or ability to change seemingly unstoppable events. City Atlas developed a cooperative game, Energetic, to teach anyone in the US – or around the world – how to practice fixing climate change with accurate, updatable information, scaling from a 2.5 hour game to a month long workshop, matched to the region in which they live. The game for NYC is now used at Carnegie Mellon, Harvard, Brown, Vanderbilt, and Bronx Science, and at Con Ed and the NYS Dept of Energy. City …

Where Do I Look? Preservice Teachers' Classroom Observation Patterns, Teresa Young, Delane Bender-Slack
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
During field experiences, preservice teachers are typically required to observe mentor teachers in schools, but what exactly are they seeing? This research examined the patterns and variations that existed with regard to preservice teachers’ classroom observations during recent field experiences. Data were collected from 24 preservice teachers during two semester-long Language Arts methods courses where students used a two-step blended observational approach (both guided and unguided) for their observations. Themes of literacy events and classroom organization emerged, and preservice teachers ultimately focused on student outcomes. The blended observational approach helped preservice teachers mediate classroom observations in order to improve learning …

Facilitating A Faculty Learning Community: Determining Consensus Using Q Methodology, Susan Ramlo
Facilitating A Faculty Learning Community: Determining Consensus Using Q Methodology, Susan Ramlo
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
With plans to improve a Technical Report Writing course, writing faculty and engineering-technology faculty formed a faculty learning community (FLC). Although discussions were often productive, it was often difficult to gauge consensus and differing views among the group members. In a previous study, Q methodology, a measure of subjectivity, was used to facilitate discussions among a diverse set of faculty (Ramlo, 2005). Similar to that study, the researcher found here that determination of consensus and differing opinions in the FLC improved dialogue, built an improved sense of community, and led to improvement of the course.

Never Too Old For A Field Trip: Exploring Community Assets For Middle Grades Literacy Integration, Christine L. Craddock, Stacie K. Pettit 2949136
Current Issues in Middle Level Education
Middle Grades teacher candidates participated in a “field trip” in an Integrated Reading course to model best practices in culturally responsive teaching. The college students visited their downtown city including a regional art museum and memorial sculpture garden commemorating local Black history to experience and contemplate possibilities for literacy integration in their pedagogy. Teacher candidates were encouraged to explore and understand community culture, history, and assets with respect to their future students’ lives, identities, interests, and experiences, and how these considerations should motivate their instructional decision making with literacy applications. A follow-up discussion was facilitated by the course professor along …

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity
The synthesis and characterization of a series of polyurethane ionenes using a non-isocyanate approach is disclosed. Imidazole-capped, urethane-containing prepolymers are prepared by first reacting carbonyl diimidazole (CDI) with several poly(propylene glycol) (PPG) diols with variable molecular weight, followed by subsequent reaction with 3-aminopropylimidazole (API). Polymerization with 1,4-dibromomethylbenzene followed by anion exchange resulted in the desired polyurethane ionenes bearing the [NTf2] counteranion as a series of viscous liquids. NMR and FTIR spectroscopy are used to characterize the intermediates and final ionenes, including molecular weight determination by end-group analysis. A single glass transition temperature (Tg), as determined by differential scanning …

A Memory Contention Responsive Hash Join Algorithm Design And Implementation On Apache Asterixdb, Giulliano Silva Zanotti Siviero
Computer Science and Engineering Master's Theses
Efficient data management is crucial in complex computer systems, and Database Management Systems (DBMS) are indispensable for handling and processing large datasets. In DBMSs that concurrently execute multiple queries, adapting to varying workloads is desirable. Yet, predicting the fluctuating quantity and size of queries in such environments proves challenging. Over-allocating resources to a single query can impede the execution of future queries while under-allocating resources to a query expecting increased workload can lead to significant processing delays. Moreover, join operations place substantial demands on memory. This resource’s availability fluctuates as queries enter and exit the DBMS. The development of join …

Large Anomalous Hall, Nernst Effect And Topological Phases In The 3d-4d/5d Based Oxide Double Perovskites, Kartik Samanta, Jonathan Noky, Iñigo Robredo, Juergen Kuebler, Maia G. Vergniory, Claudia Felser
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications
Magnetism and spin-orbit coupling are two fundamental and interconnected properties of oxide materials, that can give rise to various topological transport phenomena, including anomalous Hall and anomalous Nernst effects. These transport responses can be significantly enhanced by designing an electronic structure with a large Berry curvature. In this context, rocksalt-ordered double perovskites (DP), denoted as A2BB’O6, with two distinct transition metal sites are very powerful platforms for exploration and research. In this work, we present a comprehensive study based on the intrinsic anomalous transport in cubic and tetragonal stable DP compounds with 3d-4d/5d elements. Our findings …

Improving Small-Volume Antibiotic Administration For Surgical Prophylaxis, Benjamin Thomas
Improving Small-Volume Antibiotic Administration For Surgical Prophylaxis, Benjamin Thomas
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Student Projects
Background: Small-volume IV antibiotics are commonly administered for surgical prophylaxis, but no clear policy on administration method exists, leading to wide variation in anesthesia provider practice at a large academic medical center. Administration via a secondary tubing set is the recommended practice to minimize significant medication losses which could lead to poor patient outcomes. This large academic medical center performed below the national benchmark for one of these outcomes–surgical site infections.
Goals and Objectives: Objectives of this project included eliminating a potential systematic shortcoming in the administration of prophylactic antibiotics. The goal was to increase the use of …

Optimization Of Extreme Ultra-Violet Light Emitted From The Co2 Laser-Irradiated Tin Plasmas Using 2d Radiation Hydrodynamic Simulations, Atsushi Sunahara, Ahmed Hassanein, Kentaro Tomita, Shinichi Namba, Takeshi Higashiguchi
Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund
We studied Extreme Ultra-Violet (EUV) emission characteristics of the 13.5 nm wavelength from CO2 laser-irradiated pre-formed tin plasmas using 2D radiation hydrodynamic simulations. Our results indicate that when a CO2 laser irradiates pre-formed tin plasma, the heated plasma expands towards the surrounding plasma, steepening the density at the ablation front and lowering the density near the laser axis due to the transverse motion of the plasma. Consequently, the laser absorption fraction decreases, and the contribution to EUV output from the ablation front becomes dominant over that from the low-density plasmas. We estimated that an EUV conversion efficiency of 10% from …
Does Non-Financial Information Disclosure Promote Firm's Exports? Evidence From China's Mandatory Csr Reporting Regulation, Xin Chen
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
Although prior literature provides evidence on information technology's role in international trade, whether and how a firm's non-financial information disclosure affects export is underexplored. Using China's mandatory Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) disclosure as a quasi-natural experiment, we find that firms binding to the requirement significantly boost exports compared to their nonreporting peers. To understand the economic mechanisms, we propose that the positive impacts could be exposited through two channels: (1) information transparency and (2) financial constraint. The economic mechanism tests provide suggestive evidence that the effects are more substantial when firms are inferior in information transparency and financial constraint before …
