Balsa Bridge, Caleb T. Lovett Jan 2024

Balsa Bridge, Caleb T. Lovett

All Undergraduate Projects

The problem presented throughout this report was to create a small-scale bridge made entirely out of balsa wood and glue, that could withstand substantial force, as well as perform a lifting/lowering cycle. Other requirements associated with the bridge were properties of weight, deflection, size, and shape. This problem presented a challenge that tested the mathematical side of engineering, being strongly reliant on statics, mechanics of materials, and mechanical design analyses.

To approach this problem, the first step was to complete in depth calculations of the chosen design. With this done, manufacturing and assembly was able to be completed. With a …

Lipschitz Stability For Impulsive Riemann–Liouville Fractional Differential Equations, Martin Bohner, Snezhana Hristova Jan 2024

Lipschitz Stability For Impulsive Riemann–Liouville Fractional Differential Equations, Martin Bohner, Snezhana Hristova

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Initial and impulsive conditions for initial value problems of systems of nonlinear impulsive Riemann–Liouville fractional differential equations are introduced. The case when the lower limit of the fractional derivative is changed at each time point of the impulses is studied. In the case studied, the solution has a singularity at the initial time and at any point of the impulses. This leads to the need to appropriately generalize the classical concept of Lipschitz stability. Two derivative types of Lyapunov functions are utilized in order to deduce sufficient conditions for the new stability concept. Three examples are provided for illustration purpose …

Factors Associated With Acoustic Bat Presence During Spring Emergence In The Appalachian Mountains Of Western Virginia, Emily Kirk Pody Jan 2024

Factors Associated With Acoustic Bat Presence During Spring Emergence In The Appalachian Mountains Of Western Virginia, Emily Kirk Pody

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Studies of threats that bats face during hibernation have increased in response to white-nose syndrome (WNS), a fungal disease that has ravaged North American bat populations. However, impacts of WNS on bat ecology during spring emergence, when bats are potentially recovering from infection and allocating resources for reproduction, is relatively understudied. As more bat species become listed at the federal and state level, the need to understand the factors associated with spring emergence is critical for improving conservation guidelines and habitat management practices. Acoustic monitoring is an efficient method for monitoring bat presence for prolonged periods of time, giving biologists …

Identifying Untapped Legal Capacity To Promote Multi‑Level And Cross‑Sectoral Coordination Of Natural Resource Governance, Nicola Harvey, Ahjond Garmestani, Craig R. Allen, Anoeska Buijze, Marleen Van Rijswick

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Natural resource governance in the face of climate change represents one of the seminal challenges of the Anthropocene. A number of innovative approaches have been developed in, among others, the fields of ecology, governance, and sustainability sciences for managing uncertainty and scarcity through a coordinated approach to natural resource governance. However, the absence of an enabling legal and regulatory framework has been identified in the literature as one of the primary barriers constraining the formal operationalization of these governance approaches. In this paper, we show how these approaches provide tools for analyzing procedural mandates across governmental levels and sectors in …

Parameters And Reliability Estimation Of Left Truncated Gumbel Distribution Under Progressive Type Ii Censored With Repairable Mechanical Equipment Data, Samia A. Salem, Osama E. Abo-Kasem, Rania M. Agwa

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

The estimation of two parameters of the left truncated Gumbel distribution using the progressive type II censoring scheme is discussed. We first derived the maximum likelihood estimators of the unknown parameters. The approximate asymptotic variance-covariance matrix and approximate confidence intervals based on the asymptotic normality of the classical estimators are calculated. Also, the survival and hazard functions are derived. Further, the delta method is used to construct approximate confidence intervals for survival and hazard functions. Using the left truncated normal prior for the location parameter and an inverted gamma prior for the scale parameter, several Bayes estimates based on squared …

Estimating Seasonal Moving Average Model Using Bayesian Approach, E. A. Ahmed, H. M. Abd-Elgaber, R. A. Farghali Jan 2024

Estimating Seasonal Moving Average Model Using Bayesian Approach, E. A. Ahmed, H. M. Abd-Elgaber, R. A. Farghali

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

This paper utilizes the Gibbs sampling technique to develop a Bayesian inference for Seasonal Moving Average (SMA) model, which includes parameters that distinguish between Multiplicative and Non-multiplicative models (referred to as Augmented Seasonal Moving Average hereafter). The construction of Bayesian inference involves several steps. Firstly, the method of Non-linear least squares (NLS) is used to estimate unknown lagged errors, allowing for the approximation of the complex likelihood function. Secondly, both a semi-conjugate prior distribution and a non- informative prior distribution are applied to the unknown parameters and initial errors. Thirdly, the prior distributions are combined with the approximated likelihood function …

Estimation Of Kumaraswamy Distribution Parameters Using The Principle Of Maximum Entropy, M. R. Mahmoud, A. M. Saad

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

This paper proposes using maximum entropy approach to estimate the parameters of the Kumaraswamy distribution subject to moment constraints. Kumaraswamy [7] introduced the double pounded probability density function which was originally used to model hydrological phenomena. It was mentioned that this probability density function is applicable to bounded natural phenomena which have values on two sides. The distribution share several properties with the beta distribution and it has the extra advantages that is possesses a closed form distribution function, but it remained unknown to most statisticians until it was developed by Jones [6] as a beta-type distribution with some tractability …

Sampling Plan For Lab Extracted Beverages Data With Multiple Dependent States Using The Odd Log-Logistic Distribution, Arnold Kabyemela Fulment, Gadde Srinivasa Rao, Josephat Kirigiti Peter

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

In this paper, we propose a Multiple Dependent State Sampling (MDSS) plan for decision-making on lot acceptance/rejection based on properties of current and preceding lots sampled. The plan uses the Odd Log-Logistic Generalized Exponentiated (OLLGE) distribution to determine the median life of the product through a truncated-time life test. Optimal parameters such as sample size, acceptance/rejection numbers, and preceding lots are obtained using the operating characteristic curve (OC-curve). The plan’s performance is compared to that of single sampling (SS) plans using Lab Extracted Beverages data sets on carbon dioxide pressure (MPa).
