What Roosevelt Did To Brown V. Board Of Education, Or Race And Court Packing, Jill M. Fraley Jan 2024

What Roosevelt Did To Brown V. Board Of Education, Or Race And Court Packing, Jill M. Fraley

Scholarly Articles

Roughly one-third of American schools remain segregated. Scholars have offered a variety of explanations, mostly social and cultural, but sometimes legal, for why desegregation did not proceed effectively after Brown v. Board of Education. This Article articulates a less expected and previously undocumented cause: President Roosevelt's prior attempt at court packing slowed--even derailed--desegregation.

The story of what Roosevelt's court packing did to make the work of integration harder is a cautionary tale, particularly for those who want to alter the U.S. Supreme Court now in furtherance of a modern cause. The only reasonable route for reforming the Supreme Court must …

Ai-Assisted College Composition For Non-Native Speakers Of English - A Course Design, Aniko Nyusti Fields

Doctor of Arts in English Pedagogy Capstones

English educators face a unique problem since the end of 2022: what to do with generative AI, how to handle it in the classroom in a meaningful and ethical way, and whether to be worried about it or instead embrace it. This paper looks at the current state of English composition education in California community colleges, how it has changed with the implementation of Assembly Bills 705 and 1705, which was intended to streamline the path of non-native speaker students to completion of their required English courses, and how it could change further with the possible implementation of generative AI …

Antitrust Law For Blockchain Technology, Seth C. Oranburg Jan 2024

Antitrust Law For Blockchain Technology, Seth C. Oranburg

Law Faculty Scholarship

Applying traditional antitrust law to the modern world wide web could break the internet. Lina Khan, the FTC’s current chair, is pushing for enhanced antitrust enforcement to break up Big Tech, seemingly based on the assumption that antitrust law is the right tool for ensuring a free and equitable internet. This assumption may be in error, and this Article seeks to explain why. Antitrust doctrine originally developed from a law enacted 130 years ago to deal with monopolist “robber barons” like Standard Oil. Since 1890, the structure of markets has changed. Today’s information markets through the internet are much different …

The Bias Presumption, Bradley A. Areheart, Dave Hall Jan 2024

The Bias Presumption, Bradley A. Areheart, Dave Hall

Scholarly Works

The American workplace is a fractured sphere of public life, in which white men often wield power at the expense of women and people of color. However, that power imbalance is no longer fully imbued with the active animus that characterized the first few centuries of American life; now, much of the damage done by discrimination is done structurally and implicitly. Consequently, the operation of bias and disadvantage is often invisible to employers and employees alike. The problem of discrimination in American life is thus larger and deeper than a few bad actors, and it will be impossible to solve …

Testing A Hyperspectral, Bio-Optical Approach To Identification Of Phytoplankton Community Composition In The Chesapeake Bay Estuary, S. M. Mckibben, S. Schollaert Uz, Sherry L. Palacios

Marine Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The multi-to hyperspectral evolution of satellite ocean color sensors is anticipated to enable satellite-based identification of phytoplankton biodiversity, a key factor in aquatic ecosystem functioning and upper ocean biogeochemistry. In this work the bio-optical Phytoplankton Detection with Optics (PHYDOTax) approach for deriving taxonomic (class-level) phytoplankton community composition (PCC, e.g. diatoms, dinoflagellates) from hyperspectral information is evaluated in the Chesapeake Bay estuary on the U.S. East Coast. PHYDOTax is among relatively few optical-based PCC differentiation approaches available for optically complex waters, but it has not yet been evaluated beyond the California coastal regime where it was developed. Study goals include: (a) …

A Comparative Study On Parent Engagement Through The Lens Of Instrumental Music, Chad Altman

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

Lowel Mason highlights the importance of integrating music learning into the curriculum alongside other fundamental skills such as reading, promoting his belief in the transformative power of music education and its impact on child development. Mason stated, “Children must be taught music as they are taught to read” (Pemberton, 1992). The benefits of music extend beyond mere enjoyment among children, as they actively participate in class by singing, dancing, and playing instruments. The arts offer cognitive benefits that extend beyond student engagement, and researchers continue to explore the association between music and academic achievement. Participating in a string orchestra or …

The Sudden Escalation In Average Fastball Velocity: A Biomechanical And Cost-Benefit Analysis, Jacob Meiners Jan 2024

The Sudden Escalation In Average Fastball Velocity: A Biomechanical And Cost-Benefit Analysis, Jacob Meiners

Capstone Projects

Average fastball velocity throughout Major League Baseball has increased dramatically over the previous 15 years. This research examines the factors leading to this increase and provides a cost-benefit analysis to determine whether throwing consistently at high velocities is worth the injury risks, compared to financial benefits, from the player perspective. Additionally, this analysis examines if paying hard-throwing pitchers is worth the monetary risk from a team executive’s perspective, due to increases in leaguewide throwing injury rates. The production of advanced motion capture technology to obtain real-time biomechanical data has given way to the optimization of pitchers’ biomechanics, with the goals …

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

BACKGROUND: Hantaviruses are negative-stranded RNA viruses that can sometimes cause severe disease in humans; however, they are maintained in mammalian host populations without causing harm. In Panama, sigmodontine rodents serve as hosts to transmissible hantaviruses. Due to natural and anthropogenic forces, these rodent populations are having increased contact with humans.

METHODS: We extracted RNA and performed Illumina deep metatranscriptomic sequencing on Orthohantavirus seropositive museum tissues from rodents. We acquired sequence reads mapping to Choclo virus (CHOV, Orthohantavirus chocloense) from heart and kidney tissue of a two-decade old frozen museum sample from a Costa Rican pygmy rice rat (Oligoryzomys costaricensis) collected …

Peak Teaching: Exploring And Fostering Sacred Experiences In University Classrooms, Charles Burack

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

Supporting the spiritual growth of college and university students with diverse backgrounds and orientations is both important and challenging. It is important not only because spirituality is a crucial dimension of human life but also because the majority of students at both private and public schools want their teachers to address spiritual issues in the classroom. A powerful way to address spirituality is to explore and foster sacred experiences in university classrooms. Sacred experiences include religious, spiritual, mystical, transcendent, numinous, and peak experiences as well as many other nonordinary experiences. The author offers guidance to educators on how to: 1) …

Enzymatic Degradation Of Plastic Waste: A Review Of Microbial Strategies And Future Perspectives, David Gonçalves Jan 2024

Enzymatic Degradation Of Plastic Waste: A Review Of Microbial Strategies And Future Perspectives, David Gonçalves

Seton Hall Biochemistry II Annals of Student Reviews

It is said that humans generate 2.01 billion tons of municipal waste every year and this number is projected to explode to a massive 3.40 billion tons annually by the year 2050 (Ellis, 2018). This increase in waste production perfectly underscores a growing reliance on materials that persist in ecosystems long-term. This contamination, generated from large-scale industrial practices to doing your laundry at home, is best exemplified by the proliferation of microplastics throughout the environment.

What are microplastics? The first documented use of the term microplastics can be traced to a 1990 publication in the South African Journal of Science …

Physical, Chemical, And Biological Methods Of Large-Scale Water Decontamination, Belmin Kolenovic Jan 2024

Physical, Chemical, And Biological Methods Of Large-Scale Water Decontamination, Belmin Kolenovic

Seton Hall Biochemistry II Annals of Student Reviews

Considering water is the solvent of life, there is a lack of attention to what is added to it and how it impacts not only the environment but also society at large. In recent years, public scrutiny of the actions of individuals and industries concerning their negative actions on the environment has increased. General trends have seen a shift toward reusability and the reduction of pollutants. Examples include the use of reusable water bottles and the shift to biodegradable straws and paper cups. A plastic bottle casually floating atop a river is easily noticeable as a form of pollution but …

Special Education Options, Resources, And Services In Nonpublic Schools, Philip J. Mcbride

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the concept of special education within private schools, as well as reviews the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and its implications for educational choice. While IDEA mandates public schools to deliver these services, private school options and educational choice programs have introduced new dynamics, especially post-COVID-19 pandemic, which initiated a significant shift in school enrollment patterns. The review considers state-level school choice legislation aimed at expanding educational options and their impact on special education. The thesis further investigates the practical implications of these policies through a comparative analysis of the rights and services available to publicly …

How Sequencing Math Skills For High School Students With Math Goals In An Individual Education Plan (Iep) Supports Academic Growth, Harland Blake Field Eichmann Jan 2024

How Sequencing Math Skills For High School Students With Math Goals In An Individual Education Plan (Iep) Supports Academic Growth, Harland Blake Field Eichmann

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis focuses on how developing standards-based high school math goals can facilitate meaningful collaborations with Individual Education Plan (IEP) team members. Math goal setting is a required part of many IEPs, but little research has been done to understand how to best set goals that are appropriate, in line with evidence-based teaching methods, and focused on the concepts most essential to create meaningful access to the general education curriculum. To investigate these questions, this thesis examines research into what skills and knowledge are required for students with disabilities to achieve high school level math. Being successful in math requires …

Poverty And Inequality: A New Deal For America’S Most Disadvantaged Communities, Thomas St. Hilaire Jan 2024

Poverty And Inequality: A New Deal For America’S Most Disadvantaged Communities, Thomas St. Hilaire

Theses and Dissertations

The United States, often hailed as the most affluent nation globally, paradoxically grapples with rates of poverty, disadvantage, and inequality that surpass those of its advanced democratic counterparts. The persistence of poverty and inequality in the United States have often been justified by beliefs of welfare dependency, “free market” thinking and utilitarianism. This master's thesis explores the far-reaching moral, political, and economic consequences of America’s high rates of poverty and inequality. It contends that federal action is urgently needed on more robust social programs that target poverty, such as affordable housing, accessible healthcare, greater worker protections, and deepened social capital …

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

Computer systems store massive amounts of data with numerous features, leading to the need to extract the most important features for better classification in a wide variety of applications. Poor performance of various machine learning algorithms may be caused by unimportant features that increase the time and memory required to build a classifier. Feature selection (FS) is one of the efficient approaches to reducing the unimportant features. This paper, therefore, presents a new FS, named BDE-BSS-DR, that utilizes Binary Differential Evolution (BDE), Binary Stochastic Search (BSS) algorithm, and Dimensionality Reduction (DR) mechanism. The BSS algorithm increases the search capability of …
