Degradation Of The Mechanical Properties And Hydrogen Generation In Cement Under Gamma Irradiation Assessed By Atomistic Simulation, Omar Al Najjar

Theses and Dissertations

Although understanding the effect of the gamma-ray on cement-based materials is essential for many applications, such as the concrete contaminate of nuclear reactors or the storage of radioactive waste in cement-based waste forms, such understanding is still not fully developed. The importance of having such an understanding is becoming of utmost importance, especially with calls to extend the lifetime of nuclear power plants, and also due to some recent incidents of failures of the concrete structure in the nuclear fields. In this work, the details of preparing three molecular models as a representative structure of the main binding phase of …

Protein And Polysaccharide-Based Optical Materials For Biomedical Applications., Gianna Riviello, Brendan Connor, Jake Mcbrearty, Gianna Rodriguez, Xiao Hu

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

Recent advances in biomedical research, particularly in optical applications, have sparked a transformative movement towards replacing synthetic polymers with more biocompatible and sustainable alternatives. Most often made from plastics or glass, these materials ignite immune responses from the body, and their production is based on environmentally harsh oil-based processes. Biopolymers, including both polysaccharides and proteins, have emerged as a potential candidate for optical biomaterials due to their inherent biocompatibility, biodegradability, and sustainability, derived from their existence in nature and being recognized by the immune system. Current extraction and fabrication methods for these biomaterials, including thermal drawing, extrusion and printing, mold …

Less Prescription, More Brainstorming: Teaching Science And Risk Communication As A Research Class, Inez Z. Ponce De Leon Feb 2024

Less Prescription, More Brainstorming: Teaching Science And Risk Communication As A Research Class, Inez Z. Ponce De Leon

Department of Communication Faculty Publications

Risk, Disaster, and Humanitarian Communication is a required undergraduate course for Philippine Communication majors, but the standardized curriculum implies the need to create materials for a homogeneous audience assumed to be ignorant about and in need of scientific information. However, science and risk communication research show that communication must first be cognizant of local cultures by studying local understandings of science and risk. The author, moreover, belongs to a Jesuit university, which focuses on social justice and bridging cultural divides. The author, therefore, created a communication course based on insights from previous research, consistent with Ignatian pedagogy, and drawn from …

Sexuality Research During A National Lockdown: Reflexive Notes And Lessons From My Ph.D. Fieldwork, Tshepo B. Maake Mr

The Qualitative Report

The COVID-19 pandemic presented challenges for qualitative researchers since many countries had to implement lockdown policies to control the spread of the virus. Within the South African context, research on sexual minority identities and experiences is automatically sensitive and risky given the extent of intolerance and high regard for heteronormative ideologies and beliefs that continually exclude sexual minorities from the “normal.” The sensitivity is intensified during a national lockdown since there is an excessive reliance on digital public spaces to recruit participants and conduct interviews. Based on the experience of Ph.D. fieldwork, this paper pays attention to a sexuality researcher’s …

In Texas and throughout the United States, the increasing linguistic diversity within educational settings necessitates the expansion of bilingual and ESL programs. Approximately 5 million school-age children in the U.S. are identified as English learners, and many more are raised in non-English-speaking households. This represents about one-quarter of all K-12 students in the U.S., amounting to nearly 18 million children, most of whom have immigrant parents (Mitchell, 2020a). The urgency to address their needs is amplified by concerns that prolonged school closures could worsen the challenges faced by this demographic, which already includes heightened risks of homelessness, hunger, and educational …

A Relational Approach To Knowledge Exchange In Higher Education, Harriet Dismore, Verity Campbell-Barr, Rachel Manning, Paul Warwick Feb 2024

A Relational Approach To Knowledge Exchange In Higher Education, Harriet Dismore, Verity Campbell-Barr, Rachel Manning, Paul Warwick

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

Reference to Knowledge Exchange (KE) in UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) has become common place, reflecting the continued changing role of universities within society. Arguably, KE draws together notions of HEIs as purveyors of knowledge, with students helping to create a tripartite relationship with HEIs and the wider community as well as a civic responsibility to contribute to the wider public good. Realising the potential benefits of this inter-relationship required a problematising of the meanings of both knowledge and the notion of an exchange, drawing on the work of Dewey and Bernstein. Our paper offers an analysis of the different …

Blood Cell Image Segmentation And Classification: A Systematic Review, Muhammad Shahzad, Farman Ali, Syed Hamad Shirazi, Assad Rasheed, Awais Ahmad, Babar Shah, Daehan Kwak

All Works

Background Blood diseases such as leukemia, anemia, lymphoma, and thalassemia are hematological disorders that relate to abnormalities in the morphology and concentration of blood elements, specifically white blood cells (WBC) and red blood cells (RBC). Accurate and efficient diagnosis of these conditions significantly depends on the expertise of hematologists and pathologists. To assist the pathologist in the diagnostic process, there has been growing interest in utilizing computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) techniques, particularly those using medical image processing and machine learning algorithms. Previous surveys in this domain have been narrowly focused, often only addressing specific areas like segmentation or classification but lacking …

Fiber-Based Speckle Contrast Optical Tomography In Humans, Chen-Hao Lin Feb 2024

Fiber-Based Speckle Contrast Optical Tomography In Humans, Chen-Hao Lin

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Cerebral blood flow (CBF) is an important biomarker for indicating many brain diseases, such as stroke and traumatic brain injury. Therefore, the development of real-time CBF measures in the clinic is desired, and many techniques have been developed to measure CBF. However, the current standard techniques, including positron emission tomography (PET), arterial spin labeling magnetic resonance imaging (ASL-MRI), and computed tomography (CT) perfusion are limited to the high instrument cost, massive size, and the requirement of ionizing radiation, and thus are not able to map CBF at the bedside. Furthermore, these techniques offer only snapshots due to scanner logistics. An …

Analysis Of The Impact Of Water Treatment By Liming Sedimentation And Dredging On The Content Of Heavy Metals In Fish Intended For Consumption, Asfie Maidie, Ismail Fahmy Almadi, Muchlis Efendi, Rekha Yusdha Nilawardhani, Komsanah Sukarti, Henny Pagoray

Journal of Sustainable Mining

The present study sought to determine the presence of metals and arsenic, a metalloid, among the fish of a coal mine reservoir, where the water was treated regularly through liming sedimentation combined with dredging, and the fish living in an adjoining river. The potential hazard of metals in fish as human food was analyzed. Except for selenium (an important metal to the human body), which was higher among the river fish than in the reservoir fish (P < 0.01), there were no particular patterns of other studied metals found in either habitat (P > 0.05), and apparently not related to the fish family that consumed by local people. Measurements of bioaccumulation factor (BAF) yielded scattered values from …

Seeing Pascal’S Mystic Hexagon From A Different Angle, Anderson Norton Feb 2024

Seeing Pascal’S Mystic Hexagon From A Different Angle, Anderson Norton

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Hexagons inscribed within circles have the mystic property that their three pairs of opposite sides (when extended) intersect on the same line. This surprisingly simple result seems to support the Platonic notion that elegant mathematical relationships exist in some perfect realm awaiting human discovery. To the contrary, this article introduces a transformational proof that provides for intuitive understanding of the mystic property while supporting the idea that mathematical objects, and relationships between them, arise from coordinations of our own mental actions.
