Computational Study Of Binding Of Oseltamivir To Neuraminidase Mutants Of Influenza A Virus, Muhammad Arba, Sri Wahyuli, Setyanto Tri Wahyudi, Amir Karton, Chun Wu

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

Oseltamivir (OTV), which targets the neuraminidase (NA) of Influenza A virus (IAV), has been reported to develop resistance. Here, we performed a computational study on the binding modes of OTV in the wild-type and popular mutants of IAV NA (E119A, E119D, E119G, H274Y, I117T, I117V, I117V-E119A, K150N, N294S, R292K, V116A, and Y252H). The Arg118, Glu119, Asp151, Arg152, Glu276, Arg292, and Arg371 were identified as crucial interacting residues with the drug. The energy decomposition analysis showed that with few exceptions, the dispersion interaction is the dominant interaction, followed by the charge-transfer and polarization interactions. The affinities for OTV were greatly reduced …

Two-Photon Absorption And Fluorescence Of Cadmium Sulfide, Jacob Goranson, Gregory J. Taft Feb 2024

Two-Photon Absorption And Fluorescence Of Cadmium Sulfide, Jacob Goranson, Gregory J. Taft

Physics Faculty Publications

The two-photon absorption and fluorescence of bulk cadmium sulfide were studied using 50-fs, 800-nm pulses from an unamplified Ti:sapphire laser. The fluorescence spectrum was measured to have a main peak at 522 nm, and the power of the fluorescence was shown to vary quadratically with the 800-nm beam power. This supports the theory that the fluorescence is excited by two-photon absorption and confirms previous work done with longer duration, higher energy excitation pulses. Pump-probe measurements provided additional confirmation of the two-photon absorption. Measured spectral broadening of the wings of the laser spectrum also was observed, which likely is due to …

UNLABELLED: Advances in genetic technology have led to the increasing use of genomic panels in precision oncology practice, with panels ranging from a couple to hundreds of genes. However, the clinical utilization and utility of oncology genomic panels, especially among vulnerable populations, is unclear. We examined the association of panel size with socioeconomic status and clinical trial matching. We retrospectively identified 9,886 eligible adult subjects in the Mayo Clinic Health System who underwent genomic testing between January 1, 2016 and June 30, 2020. Patient data were retrieved from structured and unstructured data sources of institutional collections, including cancer registries, clinical …

Who Counts As Diverse? The Strategic Broadening And Narrowing Of Diversity, Junming Zhang, Teri A. Kirby Feb 2024

Who Counts As Diverse? The Strategic Broadening And Narrowing Of Diversity, Junming Zhang, Teri A. Kirby

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Introduction: A large majority of US organizations profess a commitment to diversity, but their definitions of diversity can vary greatly. While previous research demonstrates a shift in diversity definitions to include fewer protected demographic groups and more non-demographic characteristics, the present research examines whether this shift might be a motivated process among dominant group members related to anti-egalitarian and colorblind belief systems.

Methods: Using quantitative and qualitative methods, we explored potential underlying ideologies that may be associated with White Americans’ shifting definitions of diversity. White Americans (N = 498) were asked how they define diversity, as well as who …

On Crashworthiness And Energy-Absorbing Mechanisms Of Hygrothermal-Aged Cfrp Structures Subjected To Quasi-Static Loads, Dongdong Chen, Yining Wang, Maozhou Meng, Tao Zhu, Zikun He, Shoune Xiao

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Understanding the gradual performance degradation of carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) is critical for the design of engineering structures that are expected to be affected by hygrothermal environments. This study aims to investigate the effects of hygrothermal aging on the degradation mechanisms of the mechanical properties and energy absorption of CFRP structures. An experimental database comprising tensile, compressive, and shear tests for CFRP composite laminates (in this study) and axial crushing tests for energy-absorbing structures (from the literature) was constructed, in which all CFRP samples were immersed in deionized water to achieve a saturated water-absorption state. A material constitutive model …

The $Θ$-Dependence Of The Yang-Mills Spectrum From Analytic Continuation, Claudio Bonanno, Claudio Bonati, Mario Papace, Davide Vadacchino Feb 2024

The $Θ$-Dependence Of The Yang-Mills Spectrum From Analytic Continuation, Claudio Bonanno, Claudio Bonati, Mario Papace, Davide Vadacchino

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

We study the $\theta$-dependence of the string tension and of the lightest glueball mass in four-dimensional $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ Yang-Mills theories. More precisely, we focus on the coefficients parametrizing the $\mathcal{O}(\theta^2)$ dependence of these quantities, which we investigate by means of numerical simulations of the lattice-discretized theory, carried out using imaginary values of the $\theta$ parameter. Topological freezing at large $N$ is avoided using the Parallel Tempering on Boundary Conditions algorithm. We provide controlled continuum extrapolations of such coefficients in the $N=3$ case, and we report the results obtained on two fairly fine lattice spacings for $N=6$.

Maximizing Charge Dynamics In Znin2s4/Cn Van Der Waals Heterojunction For Optimal Hydrogen Production From Photoreforming Of Glucose, Jinqiang Zhang, Xinyuan Xu, Lei Shi, Huayang Zhang, Shaobin Wang, Hongqi Sun Feb 2024

Maximizing Charge Dynamics In Znin2s4/Cn Van Der Waals Heterojunction For Optimal Hydrogen Production From Photoreforming Of Glucose, Jinqiang Zhang, Xinyuan Xu, Lei Shi, Huayang Zhang, Shaobin Wang, Hongqi Sun

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Biomass photoreforming stands out as a promising avenue for green hydrogen, leveraging solar energy for the generation and transformation of clean and renewable energy resources. The pursuit of efficient photocatalysts is motivated by the unsatisfied hydrogen evolution performance arising from the complex and stubborn structure of biomass. Herein, we loaded 2-dimensional (2D) ZnIn2S4 onto 2D carbon nitride nanosheets, resulting in the formation of Van der Waals (VDW) heterojunctions (ZIS/CN). Band structure and morphology of CN were rationally tailored through precursor engineering to effectively magnify interfacial internal electric field and minimize diffusion pathway within the VDW heterostructure, realizing optimal charge dynamics …

For each set after, weight was added around the subject’s right foot and the subject was allowed a rest period before beginning the next set. The weights for sets 1, 2, 3, and 4 were 0.00kg (no additional weight) ,0.82kg, 1.64kg, and 2.27kg respectively. …

Predicting Oscillatory Patterns Of Mud Circulating Along The Well-Bore In Drilling Procedures: A Finite Element Model, Eleazar Marquez Feb 2024

Predicting Oscillatory Patterns Of Mud Circulating Along The Well-Bore In Drilling Procedures: A Finite Element Model, Eleazar Marquez

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, a mathematical model is proposed to further understand the dynamic effects [drilling] mud exerts on the drill-string assembly. The proposed model consists of a rotor subjected to various revolutions per minute (RPM’s), an axial force which accounts for the weight-on bit requirements, and a harmonic excitation simulating fluid mud circulating along the well-bore. In this regard, Euler-Bernoulli beam theory is incorporated to establish a multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) mathematical expression of a specific section of the BHA. In this regard, a finite element methodology was implemented to determine the corresponding parameters of the equation of motion and elucidate the …

Unusual Catalytic Strategy By Non-Heme Fe(Ii)/2-Oxoglutarate-Dependent Aspartyl Hydroxylase Asph, Anandhu Krishnan, Sodiq Waheed, Ann Varghese, Fathima Hameed Cherilakkudy, Christopher J. Schofield, Tatyana G. Karabencheva-Christova

Michigan Tech Publications

Biocatalytic C-H oxidation reactions are of important synthetic utility, provide a sustainable route for selective synthesis of important organic molecules, and are an integral part of fundamental cell processes. The multidomain non-heme Fe(ii)/2-oxoglutarate (2OG) dependent oxygenase AspH catalyzes stereoselective (3R)-hydroxylation of aspartyl- and asparaginyl-residues. Unusually, compared to other 2OG hydroxylases, crystallography has shown that AspH lacks the carboxylate residue of the characteristic two-His-one-Asp/Glu Fe-binding triad. Instead, AspH has a water molecule that coordinates Fe(ii) in the coordination position usually occupied by the Asp/Glu carboxylate. Molecular dynamics (MD) and quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) studies reveal that the iron coordinating water is …

Modelling Of A Drone To Analyze Dynamic Instabilities With Its Delivery System, Eleazar Marquez, Ivan Luna

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

In the study herein, an alternative mathematical model was developed with the intention of understanding the dynamics associated with the instabilities generated by an UAV and its delivery system, particularly the coupled nonlinearities of the system, and thus provide feedback to optimize drone design. In this regard, a Newton-Euler methodology was adopted to establish the parameters of the equations of motion of the target UAV system, which consisted of a combination of a platform and delivery system operating simultaneously. Specifically, the UAV platform was modelled as a rigid body which accounted for a total of six-degrees-of-freedom, three corresponding to the …

The proposed Multi-Agent System for Portfolio Profit Optimization (MASPPO) aims to optimize trading profit and reduce risk with accurate predictions. The proposed model integrates the Fuzzy c-means with the Deep …

Use Of Dft Calculations As A Tool For Designing New Solvatochromic Probes For Biological Applications, Cynthia M. Dupureur Feb 2024

Use Of Dft Calculations As A Tool For Designing New Solvatochromic Probes For Biological Applications, Cynthia M. Dupureur

Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works

The intramolecular charge transfer behavior of push–pull dyes is the origin of their sensitivity to environment. Such compounds are of interest as probes for bioimaging and as biosensors to monitor cellular dynamics and molecular interactions. Those that are solvatochromic are of particular interest in studies of lipid dynamics and heterogeneity. The development of new solvatochromic probes has been driven largely by the need to tune desirable properties such as solubility, emission wavelength, or the targeting of a particular cellular structure. DFT calculations are often used to characterize these dyes. However, if a correlation between computed (dipole moment) and experimentally measured …

Room Temperature Polaritonic Soft-Spin Xy Hamiltonian In Organic–Inorganic Halide Perovskites, Kai Peng, Wei Li, Natalia G. Berloff, Xiang Zhang, Wei Bao

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Exciton–polariton condensates, due to their nonlinear and coherent characteristics, have been employed to construct spin Hamiltonian lattices for potentially studying spin glass, critical dephasing, and even solving optimization problems. Here, we report the room-temperature polariton condensation and polaritonic soft-spin XY Hamiltonian lattices in an organic–inorganic halide perovskite microcavity. This is achieved through the direct integration of highquality single-crystal samples within the cavity. The ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic couplings in both one- and two-dimensional condensate lattices have been observed clearly. Our work shows a nonlinear organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite platform for future investigations as polariton simulators.

Emoji Use In Social Media Posts: Relationships With Personality Traits And Word Usage, Shelia Kennison, Kameryn Fritz, Maria Andrea Hurtado Morales, Eric Chan-Tin

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Prior research has demonstrated relationships between personality traits of social media users and the language used in their posts. Few studies have examined whether there are relationships between personality traits of users and how they use emojis in their social media posts. Emojis are digital pictographs used to express ideas and emotions. There are thousands of emojis, which depict faces with expressions, objects, animals, and activities. We conducted a study with two samples (n = 76 and n = 245) in which we examined how emoji use on X (formerly Twitter) related to users’ personality traits and language use …

Degradation Of The Mechanical Properties And Hydrogen Generation In Cement Under Gamma Irradiation Assessed By Atomistic Simulation, Omar Al Najjar Feb 2024

Degradation Of The Mechanical Properties And Hydrogen Generation In Cement Under Gamma Irradiation Assessed By Atomistic Simulation, Omar Al Najjar

Theses and Dissertations

Although understanding the effect of the gamma-ray on cement-based materials is essential for many applications, such as the concrete contaminate of nuclear reactors or the storage of radioactive waste in cement-based waste forms, such understanding is still not fully developed. The importance of having such an understanding is becoming of utmost importance, especially with calls to extend the lifetime of nuclear power plants, and also due to some recent incidents of failures of the concrete structure in the nuclear fields. In this work, the details of preparing three molecular models as a representative structure of the main binding phase of …

Protein And Polysaccharide-Based Optical Materials For Biomedical Applications., Gianna Riviello, Brendan Connor, Jake Mcbrearty, Gianna Rodriguez, Xiao Hu

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

Recent advances in biomedical research, particularly in optical applications, have sparked a transformative movement towards replacing synthetic polymers with more biocompatible and sustainable alternatives. Most often made from plastics or glass, these materials ignite immune responses from the body, and their production is based on environmentally harsh oil-based processes. Biopolymers, including both polysaccharides and proteins, have emerged as a potential candidate for optical biomaterials due to their inherent biocompatibility, biodegradability, and sustainability, derived from their existence in nature and being recognized by the immune system. Current extraction and fabrication methods for these biomaterials, including thermal drawing, extrusion and printing, mold …

Less Prescription, More Brainstorming: Teaching Science And Risk Communication As A Research Class, Inez Z. Ponce De Leon

Department of Communication Faculty Publications

Risk, Disaster, and Humanitarian Communication is a required undergraduate course for Philippine Communication majors, but the standardized curriculum implies the need to create materials for a homogeneous audience assumed to be ignorant about and in need of scientific information. However, science and risk communication research show that communication must first be cognizant of local cultures by studying local understandings of science and risk. The author, moreover, belongs to a Jesuit university, which focuses on social justice and bridging cultural divides. The author, therefore, created a communication course based on insights from previous research, consistent with Ignatian pedagogy, and drawn from …

Sexuality Research During A National Lockdown: Reflexive Notes And Lessons From My Ph.D. Fieldwork, Tshepo B. Maake Mr

The Qualitative Report

The COVID-19 pandemic presented challenges for qualitative researchers since many countries had to implement lockdown policies to control the spread of the virus. Within the South African context, research on sexual minority identities and experiences is automatically sensitive and risky given the extent of intolerance and high regard for heteronormative ideologies and beliefs that continually exclude sexual minorities from the “normal.” The sensitivity is intensified during a national lockdown since there is an excessive reliance on digital public spaces to recruit participants and conduct interviews. Based on the experience of Ph.D. fieldwork, this paper pays attention to a sexuality researcher’s …
