Impact Analysis Of Roadway Surface And Vehicle Conditions On Fleet Formation For Connected And Automated Vehicles, Ping Yi, Tariq Alqubaysi
Center for Connected and Automated Transportation
Taking advantage of the rapid development of vehicle control and communication technologies, many studies have suggested that operating vehicles in platoons in the future would help improve the safety and efficiency of the transportation system. Although vehicles in a platoon can share data from V2/V communication, a platoon model built on proper control laws is needed to keep the formation of the vehicle fleet and take the real advantage in platoon operations in an environment encompassing different pavement, roadway, and tire conditions. This research introduces a platoon model using a headway-based distance control policy to maintain stability and reduce errors …
A Design Thinking Mixed-Methods Study On Deliberate Practice And Building Collective Efficacy For Teachers In The Midwestern United States, Brian Elder
Dissertations
Educational research identified teacher efficacy as a primary driver for student learning and building a positive school culture (Hattie, 2018). However, understanding how to build and support the self and collective efficacy of teachers remained unclear and an elusive process for in-service teachers. The following research study used a design thinking mixed-methods study to explore how professional development rooted in a criteria of deliberate practice worked to build professional capacity of teachers and increase teacher efficacy (Ericsson, 2020). The research project initially began embedded at an independent school in a Midwestern city before expanding to include 15 in-service teachers representing …

Localized Eigenvectors On Metric Graphs, Hannah Kravitz, Moysey Brio, J G, Caputo
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We analyze the eigenvectors of the generalized Laplacian for two metric graphs occurring in practical applications. In accordance with random network theory, localization of an eigenvector is rare and the network should be tuned to observe exactly localized eigenvectors. We derive the resonance conditions to obtain localized eigenvectors for various geometric configurations and their combinations to form more complicated resonant structures. These localized eigenvectors suggest new indicators based on the energy density; in contrast to standard criteria, ours provide the number of active edges. We also suggest practical ways to design resonating systems based on metric graphs. Finally, …

Conservation agriculture seeks to reduce environmental degradation through sustainable management of agricultural land. Since the 1990s, agricultural research has been conducted using remote sensing technologies; however, few previous reviews have been conducted focused on different conservation management practices. Most of the previous literature has focused on the application of remote sensing in agriculture without focusing exclusively on conservation practices, with some only providing a narrative review, others using biophysical remote sensing for quantitative estimates of the bio-geo-chemical-physical properties of soils and crops, and few others focused on single agricultural management practices. This paper used the preferred reporting items for systematic …

Identifying Environmental And Genetic Risk Factors Of Diseases In Case-Control Studies, Siting Li
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
In response to the increasing efforts in disease prevention and treatment, this thesis applies statistical methods to investigate environmental and genetic risk factors associated with two diseases: bladder cancer and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). For bladder cancer, we investigated the association between toenail metal mixture and bladder cancer risk, along with gene expression levels associated with bladder cancer risk. For ALS, our investigation involves identifying genetic variants and gene expression levels associated with ALS risk and exploring gene-smoking interactions linked to ALS risk.
In chapter two, we developed an adaptive-mixture-categorization (AMC)-based g-computation method combining g-computation with optimized exposure categorization. We …

Stress Effects On The Growth Physiology Of Pacific Rockfishes (Sebastes Spp.): Negative Impacts Of Cortisol And Elevated Temperature Exposure, Hayley M. Mapes
Master's Theses
Fish experiencing stressful conditions increase production of the glucocorticoid hormone cortisol, which alters energy intake and allocation to help recover physiological homeostasis. Fish experiencing prolonged elevations of cortisol, however, often exhibit reduced somatic growth. While it has been shown previously in fish that cortisol inhibits anabolic growth processes in part via changes in endocrine growth hormone (Gh)/insulin- like growth factor-1 (Igf1) signaling, it is not fully understood which components of Gh/Igf1 pathways are modulated by cortisol. Here, we explored how cortisol influences the Gh/Igf1 system in blue rockfish (Sebastes mystinus) by administering exogenous cortisol and examining effects on …

Master's Theses
Understanding the temporal evolution of cells poses a significant challenge in developmental biology. This study embarks on a comparative analysis of various machine-learning techniques to classify cell colony images across different timestamps, thereby aiming to capture dynamic transitions of cellular states. By performing Transfer Learning with state-of-the-art classification networks, we achieve high accuracy in categorizing single-timestamp images. Furthermore, this research introduces the integration of temporal models, notably LSTM (Long Short Term Memory Network), R-Transformer (Recurrent Neural Network enhanced Transformer) and ViViT (Video Vision Transformer), to undertake this classification task to verify the effectiveness of incorporating temporal features into the classification …

The ability of tumour cells to thrive in harsh microenvironments depends on the utilization of nutrients available in the milieu. Here we show that pancreatic cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) regulate tumour cell metabolism through the secretion of acetate, which can be blocked by silencing ATP citrate lyase (ACLY) in CAFs. We further show that acetyl-CoA synthetase short-chain family member 2 (ACSS2) channels the exogenous acetate to regulate the dynamic cancer epigenome and transcriptome, thereby facilitating cancer cell survival in an acidic microenvironment. Comparative H3K27ac ChIP–seq and RNA–seq analyses revealed alterations in polyamine homeostasis through regulation of SAT1 gene expression and enrichment …

Feedback Loops: Going Negative, Patrick Barry
Articles
Aelet Fishbach is a professor at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business who has studied how people seek out and process negative feedback. One of the ways she has done this is through a classroom exercise in which she divides the students into two groups: feedback givers and feedback receivers. The givers are told to pair up with a receiver and communicate the following feedback in a one-on-one setting: The person's performance s unsatisfactory; improvement is needed; and there are concrete ways they can get on the right track.

Water Potential From Adaptive Force Matching For Ice And Liquid With Revised Dispersion Predicts Supercooled Liquid Anomalies In Good Agreement With Two Independent Experimental Fits, Raymond Weldon, Feng Wang
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
A revised version of the Water potential from Adaptive force matching for Ice and Liquid (WAIL) was developed by using the previous data set for fitting the WAIL model but with a dispersion term calculated using symmetry adapted perturbation theory (SAPT). The model has no adjustable parameters and relies solely on fitting first-principles information. The new model, named revised WAIL (rWAIL), shows improved predictions of most properties of water when compared to the previously published WAIL model. The rWAIL model also compares favorably to other first-principles-derived water models, such as MB-Pol, at only a fraction of the computational cost. The …

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
This paper is an in-depth study that starts from a preliminary one, where we surveyed 141 ranchers from the town of Coto-Coto in Peru to obtain as much information as possible about the relationship between two economic variables, Activity Cost and Financial Management. Furthermore, we study the correlation of the first one of them with three other economic vari ables. To do this, we process the survey data using logical operators with the support of the plithogenic statistics theory. These results given in the form of plithogenic values are logically aggregated and were converted to crisp values and studied through …

Optimization Of Triangular Neutrosophic Based Economic Order Quantity Model Under Preservation Technology And Power Demand With Shortages, S. Loganayaki, N. Rajeswari, K. Kirupa, S. Broumi
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
The primary objective of this article is to develop a mathematical model and determine the optimal policies of an inventory system involving power demand and controlled deterioration through preservation technology. This model comes in handy in a power demand-oriented inventory system with demand high at the end of the period. The model incorporates backlogged shortages and linear holding cost. The triangular neutrosophic numbers (TNN’s) are used for a nuanced representation of uncertain and imprecise inventory-related expenses. An efficient algorithm is constructed to minimize the total cost, and obtain optimal positive inventory time, optimum cycle time and minimum preservation technology investment. …

Enhancing Medical Image Quality Using Neutrosophic Fuzzy Domain And Multi-Level Enhancement Transforms: A Comparative Study For Leukemia Detection And Classification, A. A. Salama, Mahmoud Y. Shams, Huda E. Khalid, Doaa E. Mousa
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
Medical image processing has become a critical research area due to the vast amounts of digital image data available. However, medical images often suffer from poor illumination and low visibility of significant structures, requiring image enhancement to improve image quality before processing. In this paper, we propose a technique for enhancing medical images by removing noise and improving contrast based on three different enhancing transforms. The proposed technique embeds the image into a neutrosophic fuzzy domain, where it is mapped into three different levels of trueness, falseness, and indeterminacy, and each level is processed individually using the enhancement transforms. We …

This article is a brief foray into the intricate realm of mythological and folkloric composite entities. Our analysis posits that these hybrid and superhybrid creatures serve as compelling evidence that the human psyche consistently transcends binary oppositions as in neutrosophy. Across diverse cultures and epochs, the human mind exhibits a propensity for nuanced and neutrosophic vantage points, defying simplistic categorizations. Additionally, we make some remarks pertaining to the subject matter, and open up a few less conventional questions.

A Novel Method For Solving The Time-Dependent Shortest Path Problem Under Bipolar Neutrosophic Fuzzy Arc Values, Vidhya K, Saraswathi A, Broumi Said
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
The Shortest path problem is highly relevant in our daily lives, addressing uncertainties like traffic conditions and weather variations. To handle such uncertainties, we utilize Fuzzy Numbers. This paper focuses on Bipolar Neutrosophic Fuzzy Numbers, which have dual positive and negative aspects. They provide a robust framework for representing arc (node/edge) weights, signifying uncertain travel times between nodes. Importantly, these weights can change over time in bipolar neutrosophic fuzzy graphs. Our study introduces an extended Bellman-Ford Algorithm for identifying optimal paths and minimum times with time-dependent Bipolar Neutrosophic Fuzzy arc weights. We demonstrate its effectiveness through a step-by-step numerical example …

Neutrosophic Vision Of The Expected Opportunity Loss Criterion (Neol) Decision Making Under Risk, Maissam Jdid, Florentin Smarandache
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
One of the major challenges facing decision-makers at the present time is obtaining complete information about the issue under study, due to the unstable conditions of the work environment that are beyond the control of decision-makers, which requires them to reach an optimal decision in light of these circumstances and fluctuations and to benefit from the data that is collected. Collected by specialists to determine the appropriate probability distribution corresponding to random cases of nature, here we are faced with the issue of making a decision in the event of risk because the probability distribution is a distribution linked to …
