Epidemiological Modeling Of Health Information Dynamics On Twitter, Yusoph Feeroz, Jan Michael Alexandre C. Bernadas, Charibeth K. Cheng, Angelyn Lao

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

Social media, like Twitter, has become a critical component in promoting public health. Due to the similar nature of information and viruses spreading, there is a new trend of using epidemiological models to study how information spreads on social media. In this study, the SEIR model is adapted to model how health information is disseminated over Twitter. Two models are presented: a basic Twitter interaction model and a model wherein the sentiments of tweets are considered. To our knowledge, these models are the first of their kind to study health information dynamics on Twitter and to understand the behavior of …

Professional Networks Effects On Scientific Performance: The Conditioning Role Of Status And Context, Marcus Antonius Ynalvez Mar 2024

Professional Networks Effects On Scientific Performance: The Conditioning Role Of Status And Context, Marcus Antonius Ynalvez

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

This paper argues that social networks do not always produce monolithically beneficial impacts on performance (e.g., high productivity). This is to say that their influence is not always predictable and advantageous, as that influence is conditioned by status and context. Even performance in places of science such as research universities is not exempt from this contingent nature of network effects. Inspired by the work of DiMaggio and Garip (2012) and focused on the professional networks of academic scientists, this paper posits that the influence of such networks on performance (i.e., journal productivity, receipt of science awards) can either be attenuated, …

Smart Spectrophotometric Approaches For Estimation Of Difluprednate In Existence Of Its Synthetic Precursor And Alkaline Degradation Product; Comparative Statistical Studies And Analytical Ecological Appraisal, Heidi R. Abd El-Hadi, Basma M. Eltanany, Hala E. Zaazaa, Maya S. Eissa

Bulletin of Faculty of Pharmacy Cairo University

Scientists are currently attempting to lessen the harmful effects that chemicals and solvents have on the environment. The current work suggests four sensitive and sustainable spectrophotometric techniques for quantifying difluprednate (DIF) in presence of hydrocortisone acetate, which is a synthetic precursor of DIF, and in the presence of DIF alkaline degradation product. These methods are dual wavelength, fourier self-deconvolution, first derivative, and double divisor derivative ratio. The linearity range for all methods was 15.00-40.00 µg/mL. There is no statistically significant difference between established and reported methods, and the suggested strategies are more environmentally friendly than the reported one.

Using Formative Assessment And Feedback From Student Response Systems (Srs) To Revise Statistics Instruction And Promote Student Growth For All, Grace Pai

Publications and Research

Instructors are increasingly using interactive student response systems (SRS) to foster active learning and deepen student understanding in statistics education. Yet most studies focus on either the benefits of SRS or on how students can receive and use feedback, rather than on how instructors can use formative assessment data to inform instructional revisions for the purpose of enacting inclusive pedagogy to reach more learners. This article draws from a case study of an introductory statistics course at a community college to detail a framework for how an instructor can engage in what I call a reciprocal formative assessment and feedback …

Neonatal Autonomic Regulation As A Predictor Of Autism Spectrum Disorder In Very Preterm Infants, Jessica Bradshaw, Christian O'Reilly, Kayla C. Everhart, Elizabeth Dixon, Amy Vinyard, Abbas Tavakoli Drph, Robin B. Dail Mar 2024

Neonatal Autonomic Regulation As A Predictor Of Autism Spectrum Disorder In Very Preterm Infants, Jessica Bradshaw, Christian O'Reilly, Kayla C. Everhart, Elizabeth Dixon, Amy Vinyard, Abbas Tavakoli Drph, Robin B. Dail

Publications

Infants born preterm are at a significantly higher likelihood of having autism spectrum disorder (ASD), with reports of a 10-fold increase in the rate of ASD for very preterm infants (VPT, born <32 weeks gestation) [1] and a 20-fold increase for extremely preterm infants (born <28 weeks gestation) [2]. Yet, the etiological link between preterm birth and ASD remains unknown. Preterm birth and ASD are both associated with neurological differences, notably autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction. ANS dysfunction can be measured using abnormal heart rate characteristics (HRCs) and thermal gradients (TGs), and previous research has linked ANS dysfunction to neurodevelopmental impairment and autism-specific outcomes. …

Undergraduate Biology Lecture Courses Predominantly Test Facts About Science Rather Than Scientific Practices, Crystal Uminski, Sara M. Burbach, Brian A. Couch

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Scientific practices are the skills used to develop scientific knowledge and are essential for careers in science. Despite calls from education and government agencies to cultivate scientific practices, there remains little evidence of how often students are asked to apply them in undergraduate courses. We analyzed exams from biology courses at 100 institutions across the United States and found that only 7% of exam questions addressed a scientific practice and that 32% of biology exams did not test any scientific practices. The low occurrence of scientific practices on exams signals that undergraduate courses may not be integrating foundational scientific skills …
