Beavers, Hydrology, And Wapato: A Baseline For Monitoring Franz Lake National Wildlife Refuge, Justine Casebolt

Environmental Science and Management Professional Master's Project Reports

Located in the lower Columbia River floodplain, Franz Lake National Wildlife Refuge is a unique landscape with a complex land use history. For thousands of years, Indigenous tribes lived on this land. In the early 1990s, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service acquired the land, after it was identified as a mitigation site following the construction of the Bonneville Lock and Dam. Franz Lake Refuge was once known for its prevalent Wapato (Sagittaria latifolia) population, an emergent plant with edible tubers and an important food source for Indigenous people. With specific growth requirements and hydrologic conditions for germination and …

Integrating Drone And Satellite Imaging With Machine Learning For Green Stormwater Infrastructure Condition Assessments, Matthew Dupasquier Apr 2024

Integrating Drone And Satellite Imaging With Machine Learning For Green Stormwater Infrastructure Condition Assessments, Matthew Dupasquier

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) has been increasingly utilized to improve urban stormwater management strategies. However, the performance and utility of GSI decrease over time if the infrastructure is not properly maintained. In recent history, the intrinsic operations and maintenance costs associated with the complex networks of new infrastructure have placed a burden on municipalities, ultimately prohibiting many from reaching the full extent of their stormwater management goals. One way for cities to achieve cost savings is through automated monitoring that can quickly assess the condition of GSI assets; however, existing cost-effective technologies are limited. Drones and satellites may be able …

Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)

This paper investigates a new method for solving the Goursat partial differential equation (PDE) using a combination of the central finite difference method (FDM) and Taylor series expansion. The study evaluates the effectiveness and accuracy of this new approach, analyzing linear Goursat problems and conducting multiple numerical experiments. The simulation study demonstrates that the suggested approach surpasses the existing method in terms of performance and accuracy. Applying this proposed scheme will minimize the cost, especially for engineers that might apply this model in solving their real-life problems.

Predicting Covid 19 Trends A Deep Dive Into Time Dependent Sirsd With Deep Learning Technique, Abdul Basit, Jasni Mohamad Zain, Abdul Kadir Jumaat, Nur’Izzati Hamdan, Hafiza Zoya Mojahid

Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)

The COVID-19 pandemic, also known as Coronavirus Disease 2019, has affected over 700 million people globally, resulting in approximately 7 million deaths. Research has proposed multiple mathematical models to institute a disease transmission framework and predict the disease growth. Most of the existing mathematical disease growth prediction models are less effective due to the exclusion of the re-susceptible scenarios and overlooks their timedependent properties, which change continuously during the viral transmission process. Another popular prediction technique is deep learning approaches. However, existing methods often fail to accurately capture the dynamic trends of epidemics during their spreading phases in short-term and …

Lipprint: Using Lip Movements As A Silent Password, Ahmed Ketab, Nidhal K. El Abbadi

Mesopotamian Journal of CyberSecurity

Authentication and confidentiality are critical elements in many systems, and passwords are used to protect these systems. One way to enter the password into the system is via voice. The problem with this type of password is that people listen to it easily. The general purpose of this study was to make the password based on lip movement instead of sound. To address this problem, a visual speech recognition (VSR) system was proposed that detects speech from lip movement as a silent password. The proposed system consists of preprocessing the captured video via the proposed algorithms and feature extraction and …

Improved Deep Learning Model Based Real-Time Recognition Of Arabic Sign Language, Nehal F. Attia, Mohamed Talaat Faheem Said Ahmed, Mahmoud A. M. Alshewimy

Journal of Engineering Research

Sign Language (SL) recognition plays a crucial role in facilitating communication and inclusivity for the hearing-impaired community. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach that incorporates two distinct activation functions—Exponential Linear Unit (ELU) and HardSwish-ELU—to enhance recognition using the pre-trained YOLOv5 object recognition model. ELU is integrated into the intermediate layers of the YOLOv5 architecture, addressing the vanishing gradient problem and capturing more expressive features. The HardSwish activation function, known for combining the advantages of ReLU and LeakyReLU, is employed for the final classification layer to enhance discriminative power. Throughout the training process, we use the SGD-based optimizer to …

Journal of Engineering Research

New El Alamein City is one of the largest urban projects in Egypt, and the largest project on the north coast. Tall buildings (super high-rise buildings) are considered the prevailing trend by architectural designers to obtain the maximum view of the Mediterranean Sea. The provision of safety evacuation in emergencies for these buildings’ occupants is a crucial challenge from the Quality management point of view. In contrast, there are no sufficient architectural design guidelines for the tall buildings provided by the Egyptian code for protecting buildings from fire, especially the design of the refuge areas. This study aims to investigate …

In this research, the performance analysis of a solar-powered desalination system incorporating a single slope-slope solar still and an evacuated tube solar collector is theoretically investigated. The system comprises a solar evacuated tube that absorbs solar radiation, transferring heat to saline water. This water then flows into a solar still, where it absorbs solar energy, boosting the evaporation rate. Two solar distillers, namely the conventional solar distiller (Still-I) and solar still integrated with evacuated tube solar collector (Still-II), are simulated and analyzed under identical outdoor conditions in Tanta, Egypt. A comprehensive theoretical model, developed using FORTAN programming, simulates the performance …

A New Method To Start Loaded Induction Motors, Omar El-Sayed Mohammed Youssef

Journal of Engineering Research

Three-phase induction motors have a widespread use in industry, and starting of loaded induction motors is an important matter. However, there are few studies on motor starting using variable-frequency drives (VFDs). The existing control schemes, described by these studies, have disadvantages such as dependence on derived characteristics, adjustment of settings, design of controllers, or burden of calculations on the control processor. In this paper, a simple and effective control scheme of VFDs to start loaded motors is proposed. In this scheme, there is no dependence on any characteristic, adjustment of settings, controllers, and rotor speed sensor. By this scheme, the …
