The Fibonacci sequence is defined as the sequence Fn with the recurrence relation Fn+1 = Fn + F n-1 where F0 = 0 and F1= 1. A closely related sequence to the Fibonacci sequence is the Lucas sequence, Ln. The terms of the Lucas sequence satisfy the the same recurrence relation as the Fibonacci sequence with differing initial conditions. In this paper, we will study some of the properties of the Fibonacci numbers and explore some of the relationships between Fibonacci and Lucas numbers. We will also give a proof of Binet's …
Wittgenstein, Empiricism, And Pragmatism: Examining The Evolution Of Wittgensteinian Solipsism, Cody Davis
Wittgenstein, Empiricism, And Pragmatism: Examining The Evolution Of Wittgensteinian Solipsism, Cody Davis
Academic Festival
In this paper I will argue for an interpretation of Ludwig Wittgenstein’s Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus as a work of empiricism, as well as an argument for his Philosophical Investigations as a work of pragmatism, and how these two interpretations apply to Wittgenstein’s formulation of solipsism. Specifically, I will show how an empiricist understanding of the Tractatus leads Wittgenstein to his formulation of solipsism, which is untenable because it is unsayable. Similarly, I will show how a pragmatic understanding of the Investigations gives Wittgenstein a “way out” of his Tractarian solipsism, specifically with his formation of the private language argument as a …

Euler And A Proof Of The Functional Equation For The Riemann Zeta-Function He Could Have Given, Alexander Aycock
Euleriana
We explain how Euler could have proved a functional equation, which is equivalent to the one for the Riemann zeta-function, that he conjectured in his paper {\it ``Remarques sur un beau rapport entre les series des puissances tant directes que reciproques"} \cite{E352} (E352: ``Remarks on the beautiful relation between the series of the direct and reciprocal powers").

Euler And Homogeneous Difference Equations With Linear Coefficients, Alexander Aycock
Euleriana
We present a method outlined by Euler in his paper{\it ``De fractionibus continuis observationes"} \cite{E123} (E123: ``Observations on continued fractions") that can be used to solve homogeneous difference equations with linear coefficients. We will illustrate his ideas by applying it to two familiar examples and explain how it can be understood from a more modern point of view.
On The Cases In Which The Formula X^4+Kxxyy+Y^4 Can Be Reduced To A Square, Georg Ehlers
On The Cases In Which The Formula X^4+Kxxyy+Y^4 Can Be Reduced To A Square, Georg Ehlers
Euleriana
Euler’s key idea for equating the Quartic in the title to a square is to set k=P+surd(Q). From this he derives P=f·x^2 and Q=4f·y^2+4 and solves the Pell equation for y. He then discusses various extensions to rational numbers that leave k an integer. Euler provides incomplete tables for integers k with |k|square.

We studied a combinatorial game played between two players ("Alpha", who goes first, and "Beta", who goes second). The idea is that there are a lot of lightbulbs in a large warehouse, and they take turns turning a light bulb on. When a light bulb is turned on, it illuminates the area directly by it as well as the areas immediately surrounding it. The player who is the one to make all of the warehouse illuminated is the winner. This can be modeled on a graph. The two players take turns (1) selecting a vertex that has not yet been …

Seagrass Conservation And Restoration To Mitigate Ocean Acidification And Climate Change, Tori Benson, Emi Wagner, Jaeger Reed
Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)
For millennia, various seagrass species have been sequestering and anchoring aquatic carbon into oceanic sediment. The crucial role of seagrasses involves helping mitigate climate change, which emphasizes the urgent need to conserve, sustain, and manage them as part of global climate action efforts. Restoration and conservation studies have shown significant reversal of potential damaging effects, however human activity continues to set back efforts faster than they can proceed. Multiple studies have concluded that there has been a decline in seagrass meadows in previously dense areas; and due to this, surrounding pH levels have declined and rising atmospheric carbon poses a …

Modeling And Synthesis Of 3-(2,6-Disubstituted 5-Pyrimidyl) Propionic Acids As Inhibitors Of Low Molecular Weight Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase (Lmw-Ptp), Kennedy Bueno, Madisen Carter
Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)
Low molecular weight protein tyrosine phosphatase (LMW-PTP) is an enzyme and a known signal pathway for growth factors and cellular transformation in eukaryotic cells. Our research aims to synthesize 12 new potential inhibitors of LMW-PTP and analyze their inhibitory activity and binding affinity. The inhibition of both isoforms of LMW-PTP has been the primary focus of research due to their potential role in breast, colon, and other cancers as well as type II diabetes. One known inhibitor, pyridoxal 5’- phosphate (PLP), is essential for various enzymatic reactions within the body, such as the synthesis of neurotransmitters, and is therefore impractical …
