Exploring The Experiences Of Chinese Heritage Language Learners In California Public High Schools: A Mixed Methods Study, Min Chuan Jasmine Wang
Exploring The Experiences Of Chinese Heritage Language Learners In California Public High Schools: A Mixed Methods Study, Min Chuan Jasmine Wang
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to comprehend the motivations and learning experiences of Chinese Heritage Language Learners (CHLLs) who study in Chinese programs in California public high schools where Chinese American students are under-studied and their voices are not heard. The study used Gardner’s Socio-educational Model, Fishman’s Reversing Language Shift (RLS), and Asian Critical Theory (AsianCrit) as the theoretical frameworks for the investigation. The methodology of this study applied the mixed-methods sequential explanatory design, starting with an online survey data collection and following up with interviews with CHLLs and language teachers. The researcher then conducted classroom observations to support …
Forensic Iconography For Image Forgery Detection, Chad R. Johnson
Forensic Iconography For Image Forgery Detection, Chad R. Johnson
Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations
Traditionally, image forgeries were limited to defraud art collectors and falsify documents. The rise of visual media provided legitimate reasons for artists to forge images in the pursuit of more effective storytelling. In all cases these methods required specialized domain knowledge and highly skilled artists. The rise of computers simplified many of these processes, lowering the bar in time, materials, and skill, and thus giving most users access basic tools for altering images. Today, image alteration tools leverage machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques, and can generate incredibly accurate image forgeries. Effective methods for verifying the authenticity of media data …

Error Estimates For A Mixed Finite Element Method For The Maxwell's Transmission Eigenvalue Problem, Chao Wang, Jintao Cui, Jiguang Sun
Michigan Tech Publications
In this paper, we analyze a numerical method combining the Ciarlet-Raviart mixed finite element formulation and an iterative algorithm for the Maxwell's transmission eigenvalue problem. The eigenvalue problem is first written as a nonlinear quad-curl eigenvalue problem. Then the real transmission eigenvalues are proved to be the roots of a non-linear function. They are the generalized eigenvalues of a related linear self-adjoint quad-curl eigenvalue problem. These generalized eigenvalues are computed by a mixed finite element method. We derive the error estimates using the spectral approximation of compact operators, the theory of mixed finite element method for quad-curl problems, and the …

Galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) are charged particles that reach the heliosphere almost isotropically in a wide energy range. In the inner heliosphere, the GCR flux is modulated by solar activity so that only energetic GCRs reach the lower layers of the solar atmosphere. In this work, we propose that high-energy GCRs can be used to explore the solar magnetic fields at low coronal altitudes. We used GCR data collected by the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov observatory to construct maps of GCR flux coming from the Sun’s sky direction and studied the observed GCR deficit, known as Sun shadow (SS), over a …

A Statistical Fetch Model For Water Wave Glint Correction Using Worldview-3 Imagery, Amanda Jade Quintanilla
A Statistical Fetch Model For Water Wave Glint Correction Using Worldview-3 Imagery, Amanda Jade Quintanilla
Theses and Dissertations
Sun glint in satellite imagery of the water surface contaminates the upwelling signal received by a detector. Many models exist that attempt to correct for this wave facet effect and phenomena. In this work a model for sun glint correction is created using the comparison of image transects between two nearly simultaneously collected images of the same area, although with differing sensor geometry. One image utilized in this research is almost entirely glint free while the other is contaminated by water wave facet glint. Although many models for removing sun glint exist based on various techniques, none are completely accurate, …

Utilization Of Confined Concrete In The Bottom Slab Of Double Composite Box Girder Bridges, Harry Craik
Theses and Dissertations
A mathematical model is proposed for the confinement of rectangular confined reinforced concrete elements under compression. The model was modified from existing models applied to rectangular confined concrete specimens. The present model applies to rectangular reinforced concrete cross-sections with a core aspect ratio of at least 2.0 and a high effective confinement index. The model applies to normal and high-strength concrete and incorporates the spacing of the transverse reinforcing hoops, the strength of the reinforcing bars, the reinforcing quantity, and the core aspect ratio of the section. The proposed model was verified against extensive experimental data, and there was a …

The integration of models created through model-based systems engineering methods with DoDAF is not a new concept. By creating DoDAF-aligned models, DoD program managers are following DoD guidelines to hopefully achieve more effective communication with stakeholders and improve efficiency of their programs. With the use of MBSE tools to create these models, DoD program managers are able to take further advantage of the benefits of MBSE methods. However, even with the use of MBSE tools, there continue to be issues throughout DoD programs. The literature has shown that a continuous improvement approach regarding the use of MBSE tools with DoDAF …
Space Transformation For Open Set Recognition, Atefeh Mahdavi
Space Transformation For Open Set Recognition, Atefeh Mahdavi
Theses and Dissertations
Open Set Recognition (OSR) is about dealing with unknown situations that were not learned by the models during training. In OSR, only a limited number of known classes are available at the time of training the model and the possibility of unknown classes never seen at training time emerges in the test environment. In such a setting, the unknown classes and their risk should be considered in the algorithm. Such systems require not only to identify and discriminate instances that belong to the source domain (i.e., the seen known classes contained in the training dataset) but also to reject unknown …

Caelus: Cubesat Array For The Exploration Of The Uranus System, Dylan George Heidenrich Barnes
Theses and Dissertations
Following recommendations from the 2023-2032 Planetary Science and Astrobiology Decadal Survey, we propose a novel Pre-Phase A level Uranus exploration mission concept that is centered on using swarms of small spacecraft to observe the Uranus system. This mission could act as a supplement to the Flagship Uranus Orbiter and Probe mission detailed in said Decadal Survey. We propose launching a 4,500 kg spacecraft on an Earth-Jupiter-Uranus gravity assist transfer trajectory with a transfer time of six years, launching in 2033 and arriving at Uranus in 2039. This shorter transfer time and accelerated development timeline would allow for an earlier arrival …

Thermal Conductivity Of Thin Porous Ceramic Coatings: An Analytical And Experimental Study, Lei Zhao
Theses and Dissertations
An analytical model of the thermal conductivity of the porous yttrium-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) layer used in the thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) is presented. Such high-temperature resistant coatings are essential to protect the metallic components of gas turbine engines. The model calculates the conductivity based on the coating's porosity, pore size distribution, and pore morphology, including the individual pore cross-section area, aspect ratio, and orientation, which are extracted from the scanning electron microscopy images. The model was verified through comparisons with numerical simulation results from a multiphysics software tool. A laser temperature gradient test was performed to validate the analytical model …

Better Light Than Never: A New Radiative Mechanism For Observing Binary Black Holes, Paul Rioles
Graduate Masters Theses
Black holes are notoriously elusive, they are impossible to observe directly, and cur- rent methods of extracting information from behind their cosmic camouflage are both limited in number and experimentally difficult. The scope of this investigation is to ex- plore a proposed novel radiative mechanism for active similar mass binary black holes, affording new observational methods to investigate frequency inspirals of BH mergers. The explored mechanism is a result of each BH’s accretion of the surrounding plasma, creating voids that orbit throughout the plasma. The significant results described in this thesis include expressions for the frequency, power radiated per unit …

Designing Efficient And Equitable Freight Services Markets For Sustainable Economic Performance, Arim Park, Mark Rodgers, Soohyun Cho
American Business Review
Despite the indispensability of freight trucking services and truckers’ role as critical stakeholders in supply chains, relatively little attention has been paid to analyzing small independent truckers’ roles. Shippers often prefer working with larger trucking companies to the detriment of smaller independent truckers, who must grapple with an inherently disadvantageous job market. Furthermore, in the presence of uncertainty or peak demand periods, trucker shortages can pose significant economic challenges for shippers and downstream customers. In this paper, we propose an analytical framework to address these challenges in efforts to enhance the sustainability of the freight service industry. We formulate and …

Like many developing nations, Egypt is facing a climate crisis due to its agricultural dependence and the Nile Delta’s vulnerability. Despite government plans for sustainable development, recent infrastructure projects have resulted in large-scale green space removal. Effective communication about environmental issues can spark pro-environmental behavior and citizen activism. This study explores social media’s potential to bridge this gap in Egypt. Utilizing Facebook AB testing with a limited budget, we reached a significant 2.3% of Egypt’s online population (nearly 2 million users). This study explored message framing, with findings showing that rational posts resonated best while fear appeals had minimal impact. …

Single point incremental forming (SPIF) is a flexible manufacturing process that has applications in industries ranging from biomedical to automotive. In addition to rapid prototyping, which requires easy adaptations in geometry or material for design changes, control of the final part properties is desired. One strategy that can be implemented is stress superposition, which is the application of additional stresses during an existing manufacturing process. Tensile and compressive stresses applied during SPIF showed significant effects on the resulting microstructure in stainless steel 304 truncated square pyramids. Specifically, the amount of martensitic transformation was increased through stress superposed incremental forming. Finite …

The topology of the potential energy landscape for a spin-glass arranged on the Kagome lattice is studied by the use of enhanced disconnectivity graphs. Enhanced disconnectivity graphs display location and type of minima structures and the barrier heights between them. Three different models which differ in the range of allowed values for the bond strength are analyzed. The allowed values for bond strength for the three different models are {±1}, {±1, ±2}, and {±1, ±2, ±3}. 100 systems were randomly generated for each model, and enhanced disconnectivity graphs were drawn for each system by using the Hamiltonian of the Ising …

BACKGROUND:
Coarctation of the aorta (CoA) often leads to hypertension posttreatment. Evidence is lacking for the current >20 mm Hg peak-to-peak blood pressure (BP) gradient (BPGpp) guideline, which can cause aortic thickening, stiffening, and dysfunction. This study sought to find the BPGpp severity and duration that avoid persistent dysfunction in a preclinical model and test if predictors translate to hypertension status in patients with CoA.
METHODS:
Rabbits (n=75; 5–12/group) were exposed to mild, intermediate, or severe CoA (≤12, 13–19, ≥20 mm Hg BPGpp) for ≈1, 3, or 22 weeks using dissolvable and permanent sutures with thickening, stiffening, contraction, and endothelial …

Channel Response To Flow Augmentation: Diamond Fork River, Ut, Diane E. Wagner
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
A river’s physical features and channel dimensions are determined by the water and sediment supplied to it. The Diamond Fork River, located in central Utah—received large trans-basin diversion flows from 1915-2003, providing an exceptional opportunity to explore the response of a river to a large increase in flow.
Our project goals were to describe 1) channel response to this large and long artificial flow augmentation and 2) how the channel recovered after the removal of the diversion flows. The objective of this thesis is to document the channel condition throughout the 20th century to present day as a basis …
Impacts Of Lake Elevation Decline On Tui Chub, A Critical Forage Species For Lahontan Cutthroat Trout In Pyramid Lake, Nevada, Usa, Sarah Barnes
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Lake level decline affects lakes worldwide, changing the availability and character of nearshore habitat used by fish to spawn, and increasing total dissolved solids (TDS), similar to salinity, a factor that negatively impacts fish health. Lake level decline can affect different lakes in different ways, but typically when lake level declines significantly, there is less nearshore habitat overall, and what nearshore habitat remains has less diverse habitat for fish. We investigated whether both impacts of lake level decline may be causing declines of Tui Chub Siphateles bicolor, a large minnow native to Pyramid Lake that spawns in nearshore habitat. …
