Synthetic porphyrins have been crucial as models for heme units and other biological porphyrins, as well as components of advanced materials and catalysts. Much of the work on synthetic porphyrins has focused on the meso-substituted 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) or the pyrrole-substituted 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octaethylporphyrin (OEP). In this report, we present a comprehensive spectroscopic, electrochemical, and computational study of free-base, zinc(II), and copper(II) 5,10,15,20-tetrapentylporphyrin (TPeP). TPeP can be prepared via a two-step, one-flask reaction of pyrrole and hexanal mediated by Montmorillonite K10, followed by oxidation with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) in yields of around 40%. Similar to TPP, the TPeP systems have the highest occupied molecular …

New Results On Three-Sided Skyline Range Counting And Reporting, Suruchi Kushwaha, Yakov Nekrich
Michigan Tech Publications
In the orthogonal skyline range counting (resp. reporting) problem we store the set of points P in a data structure so that for any query range Q the number of points (resp. the list of all points) on the skyline of Q∩P can be found efficiently. In this paper we study two-dimensional range counting and reporting problems in the case when the query range is bounded on three sides. We describe a linear-space data structure that answers top-open three-sided skyline counting queries in O(log log N) time, where N is the number of points stored in the data structure. We …
Describing Hidden Curriculum In An Undergraduate Computing Context, Joseph R. Teahen, Briana C. Bettin, Leo Ureel
Describing Hidden Curriculum In An Undergraduate Computing Context, Joseph R. Teahen, Briana C. Bettin, Leo Ureel
Michigan Tech Publications
Hidden Curriculum (HC) is the set of essential knowledge, skills, and norms students are expected to know, but never explicitly taught. HC is disproportionately experienced across identities and communities. In computing education, most research addresses immediately identifiable HC within the researcher's context. While such work is important, without proper HC descriptive studies, we could miss more subtle HC that affects student success. This work presents results from interviews with undergraduate computing faculty, students, and peer mentors on their HC experiences. The results demonstrate several categories of HC including development tools, professional skills, institutional navigation, social well-being, and physical well-being. These …

Gunk - Genetic Underwater Nucleic-Acid Collector, Kay Hall, Harumy Miura, Isaac Carlos Hernandez-Nguyen, Oscar Emilio Alvarado Flores
Interdisciplinary Design Senior Theses
Environmental DNA sampling is a powerful and minimally invasive tool for biodiversity assessment and species monitoring. However, existing environmental DNA collection systems are costly, difficult to deploy at depth at low cost and with small teams, non-standardized, and inaccessible to non-technical users. This report presents GUNK, the Georeferenced Underwater Nucleic-acid Kollector, a submersible environmental DNA sampler developed in collaboration with ConservationXLabs and the Santa Clara University Robotics Systems Laboratory. GUNK is designed to address three primary goals: reaching sampling depths unachievable by existing low-cost solutions, reducing the financial barrier associated with environmental DNA research, and ensuring the system is easily …

Next-Generation Dns Rpz For Automated Threat Intelligence, Risk-Aware Filtering, And User-Centric Security, Jinu S, Kishore V. Krishnan, Rajarshi Middya, Annasamy Bagubali
Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
The Domain Name System (DNS) remains a critical attack vector exploited by adversaries for command-and-control (C2) communication, data exfiltration, and phishing campaigns. DNS Response Policy Zones (RPZ) have emerged as an effective defense mechanism by enabling the redirection or blocking of queries to malicious domains. However, current RPZ implementations encounter significant challenges related to scalability, adaptability, and user awareness, often resulting in static policies, delayed updates, and a high incidence of false positives. To address these limitations, this paper proposes an enhanced RPZ framework that integrates adaptive threat intelligence, machine learning-driven dynamic policy updates, and user-context-aware security controls. The proposed …

The Method Of Periodic Averaging Applied To Reduced Coupled Mode Theory Models For Fiber Laser Amplifiers, Rebecca Nicole Bryant
The Method Of Periodic Averaging Applied To Reduced Coupled Mode Theory Models For Fiber Laser Amplifiers, Rebecca Nicole Bryant
Dissertations and Theses
Fiber laser amplifier (FLA) models are often implemented without rigorous mathematical justification or thorough numerical validation. Without a proper theoretical basis for assumptions and approximations, or a technical analysis of model performance, there is significant uncertainty about the limitations of any given reduced model and its suitability for an application. This research aims to address the lack of comprehensive assessment of FLA models by directly comparing distinct models and recommending a mathematical alternative to replace heuristic model-reduction techniques. The work in this dissertation is divided into two projects: a comparative study that uses existing FLA models to assess the validity …
Shifting Perspectives In Mathematics: Examining Preservice Elementary Teachers' Evolving Conceptions Of Mathematics, Identity, And Social Inequality Through Course Design, Autumn Thu Pham
Dissertations and Theses
Mathematics is often viewed, taught, and learned as an abstract, stand-alone subject, with an emphasis on procedures that are frequently disconnected from learners' lived experiences. Within this framing, limited attention is given to students' affect and identities in relation to mathematics. As a result, opportunities to engage with mathematics as a social, sociopolitical, and empowering tool remain rare. These patterns highlight an important implication for teacher education programs: when mathematics is framed primarily as abstract and procedural, preservice elementary teachers (PTs) may enter the profession lacking strong conceptual understanding, pedagogical flexibility, and the social and political awareness needed to effectively …
Rolling-Shutter Image Skew As A Visual-Inertial Motion Signal In Imu-Synchronized Multimodal Capture, Clifford T. Smyth
Rolling-Shutter Image Skew As A Visual-Inertial Motion Signal In Imu-Synchronized Multimodal Capture, Clifford T. Smyth
Defensive Publications Series
In a sensor system that records a rolling-shutter image stream together with a synchronized, higher-rate inertial measurement unit (IMU) stream, the intra-frame geometric skew produced by rolling-shutter readout is treated not as an artifact to be removed but as a usable, temporally structured motion signal. Because a rolling-shutter frame exposes its rows sequentially, the frame encodes camera and scene motion over the readout interval. When the frame is time-correlated with inertial data at sufficient resolution, the inertial stream can be used to estimate the camera motion during readout, which in turn supports two complementary representations of each frame: (1) an …
Fibonacci Global History Length (Fihl) Dynamic Branch Predictor Architecture, Gopi K. Tummala
Fibonacci Global History Length (Fihl) Dynamic Branch Predictor Architecture, Gopi K. Tummala
Defensive Publications Series
The Fibonacci Global History Length (FIHL) Branch Predictor is a highly constrained hardware architecture designed to optimize speculative execution in deeply pipelined microprocessors. Operating within a strict 32-kilobit hardware budget, the FIHL architecture synthesizes the frameworks of perceptron learning and hash indexing while replacing traditional geometric history length progressions with the Fibonacci sequence. By natively mapping global history lengths to the Fibonacci sequence across six parallel branch history tables, the design efficiently correlates both highly localized instruction patterns and distant control-flow dependencies without the exponential memory footprint of traditional pattern history tables. Empirical evaluations across diverse workloads demonstrate that this …
Blade-Integrated Triply Periodic Minimal Surface Micro-Cooling Distribution Unit For High-Density Data Centers, N/A, N/A
Defensive Publications Series
A decentralized liquid cooling architecture for high-density data center racks integrates a micro-cooling distribution unit (mCDU) directly onto each server blade or chassis wall. The mCDU, an additively manufactured monolithic block of titanium or aluminum, replaces centralized rack-level heat exchangers and their associated plumbing. Its internal structure uses a triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) lattice, such as a Schwarz-P or Schwarz-D geometry, to create two intertwined, co-continuous fluid paths. One path circulates hot coolant from the server components while the other circulates cold facility water. This TPMS geometry has a large surface-area-to-volume ratio for thermal exchange and results in low …

Predictive Hardware State Mitigation Using Telemetry And Feedback, Mohsen Heidarinejad, Farid Kenarangi, Arpit Mittal, Amin Khajeh
Defensive Publications Series
Varying computational tasks introduce thermal and power dependencies within modern computing devices. Static threshold policies might not fully capture cumulative operational stress, potentially causing over-throttling or delayed hardware responses. A closed-loop machine learning framework is disclosed that dynamically evaluates multidimensional telemetry data to compute a predictive risk score. A feature selector extracts direct measurements, system activity indicators, temporal features, and health indicators. Based on the calculated risk score, an arbitrator dynamically applies mitigation actions (e.g., scaling component voltage and frequency states). A model corrector operates during hardware idle periods to iteratively refine predictive modeling using observed performance metrics. The disclosed …
Fused Arithmetic Datapath For Bit‑Slicing Multiply‑And‑Accumulate Units, Dongseok Im, Hee Jun Park
Fused Arithmetic Datapath For Bit‑Slicing Multiply‑And‑Accumulate Units, Dongseok Im, Hee Jun Park
Defensive Publications Series
Many modern processing systems utilizing bit‑scalable architectures may experience performance limitations due to dynamic power consumption from heavy integer arithmetic operations. Executing higher‑precision quantized matrix multiplications on lower‑precision multiply‑and‑accumulate (MAC) hardware typically requires calculating multiple independent partial products, which may lower computational efficiency. The disclosed processing system derives cross‑product terms simultaneously through a fused mathematical operation. Specifically, it uses pre‑multiplication addition on decomposed operand segments and executes a post‑multiplication subtraction to isolate the cross‑products. This approach reduces the total number of hardware multiplication operations utilized per calculation. By reducing these redundant steps, the processing system may lower dynamic power consumption, …

Minimizing Makespan In Sublinear Time Via Weighted Random Sampling, Bin Fu, Yumei Huo, Hairong Zhao
Minimizing Makespan In Sublinear Time Via Weighted Random Sampling, Bin Fu, Yumei Huo, Hairong Zhao
Computer Science Faculty Publications
We consider the classical makespan minimization scheduling problem where n jobs must be scheduled on m identical machines. Using weighted random sampling, we develop two sublinear time approximation schemes: one for the case where n is known and one for the case where n is unknown. Both algorithms not only give a (1+3ϵ)-approximation to the optimal makespan but also generate a sketch schedule. Our first algorithm, which targets the case where n is known and draws samples in a single round under weighted random sampling, has a running time of O~(m5ϵ4n+A(mϵ,ϵ)), where A(N,α) is the time …

Non-Negotiable Responsibilities Of Librarians Despite The Presence Of Generative-Ai Powered Chatbots: An Overview, Emmanuel Chidiadi Onwubiko
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The presence of AI-Chatbots as linguistic models of Generative AI is one that has sent cold in the spines of librarians for the fear of the unknown. Against this backdrop, it is received with mixed feelings. To some librarians, it poses threats to their traditional responsibilities hence the fear of losing their jobs. This paper conceptualizes the place of generative-AI Chatbots in libraries and their limitations, identifying some non-negotiable responsibilities of librarians regardless of the emergence of AI-Chatbots as well as clearing some doubts as expressed by librarians by reconciling the impacts of Chatbot and how librarians can leverage the …

Optimization Of Cyanide Leaching Process Based On Grain Size And Slurry Density In Artisanal Small-Scale Gold Mining In Tatelu Area, North Sulawesi, Indonesia, Dadan Mohamad Nurjaman, Harmin Sulistiyaning Titah, Adji Kawigraha, Ipung Fitri Purwanti, Wahyu Hidayat
Journal of Sustainable Mining
Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) in Tatelu Village, North Sulawesi, has shifted from mercury amalgamation to cyanide leaching. However, gold recovery remains inefficient, requiring process optimization. This study uses multiple linear regression analysis to evaluate the influence of grain size and slurry density on gold dissolution. The results indicate that grain size plays a dominant role in leaching efficiency, while slurry density, pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), and cyanide concentration have statistically insignificant effects (p > 0.05). Laboratory tests show that finer grain sizes enhance dissolution, with the highest recovery rate of 89.08% achieved at 75% passing through 44 …

Prior to the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling, access to safe legal abortions was limited and often restricted along racial, economic, and geographic lines. Nearly fifty years later, women’s health policy evolved again following the 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision overturning Roe v. Wade. This court ruling decimated federal protections of abortion. This paper presents the research that the 2022 Dobbs judicial decision may contribute to and exacerbate rape-related PTSD on 1 out of 20 American who are unable to access a safe abortion after a rape-related pregnancy. Pregnant women living in conservative states that have outlawed …

Investigation Of Portland Limestone Cement Blended With Biochar From Downdraft Gasification: Hydration Kinetics, Microstructure, Rheology, And Performance Mechanisms, Ugochukwu Ewuzie, Paul C. Ani, Abdulkareem O. Yusuf, Joseph D. Smith, Monday Uchenna Okoronkwo
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The widespread adoption of Portland Limestone Cement (PLC) in U.S. concrete production has necessitated research into commercially available supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) for formulating high-performance, low-carbon blended binders with PLC. This study investigated the influence of biochar (BC) in biochar-PLC composites (CBCs), focusing on hydration kinetics, microstructure, rheology, pore-solution chemistry, compressive strength, and the underlying mechanisms. Biochar was produced via downdraft gasification at 850 °C and incorporated into PLC at 5, 7, and 10% substitution by mass. Isothermal calorimetry and hydration data modeled using the Knudsen equation revealed that BC retarded early hydration but improved hydration degree and later-age heat …

Method And Apparatus For Deterministic Material Synthesis Via Off-Axis Pulsed Laser Deposition And Supersonic Isentropic Injection (The "Fuel Forge"), Daniel Schramm
Defensive Publications Series
This disclosure details an industrial-grade material synthesis apparatus that integrates off-axis Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) with supersonic gas injection. The system is defined by a severe Vapor-Quench thermal gradient: the precursor gas is actively heated prior to injection, while the rotating titanium anvil is actively cryo-cooled. The apparatus achieves mathematically deterministic stability by balancing aerodynamic drag, laser energy deposition (2.78 eV), and the heated injection spike against a strict 50-Watt cryogenic cooling threshold. By synchronizing the anvil within a regulated 6.8 Pascal vacuum, the apparatus establishes a closed-loop, verifiable safe-operating envelope for advanced material synthesis.

Probabilistic Characterization Of Voltage Glitching Attacks, Anna Filyurina
Computer Science Senior Theses
Glitching, or Fault Injection, is an effective hardware hacking technique used in industry but largely unstudied in academia. Industry-led study of glitching is result-driven and overwhelmingly proprietary, meaning that a scientific approach to glitching is seen infrequently and published even less.
This thesis aims to be part of the effort to bring glitching to the attention of the academic side of the cyber security community. Specifically, this work aims to characterize and explore the probabilistic nature of fault injection that has been previously overlooked. Although from a purely result-driven point of view probabilistic nature of a phenomenon suggests unreliability and …

Flagellar Coordination In A Swimming Multicellular Bacterium, Erandi Sachinthanie Imiya Mudiyanselage, Melina Mati, Alexander P. Petroff
Physics
Microbial locomotion is well understood when cells use either a small number of flagella or a high density of cilia. However many microbes live in an intermediate regime where coordination strategies such as flagellar bundles and metachronal waves are not possible. The mechanisms by which such organisms coordinate the motion of their swimming appendages are not well understood. Here, we study the only known obligatory multicellular bacterium, which are of the genus Magnetoglobus. Cells of this genus live exclusively in spherical communities called consortia, which are composed of a monolayer of tens of cells. Approximately a thousand of flagella project …
