Mobile Devices As An Instructional Tool To Promote Teachers’ Metacognition: Insights From Pakistani Teachers, Zainab Shazadi Javed Ms, Fatima Javed Ms, Mehvish Mufti Ms
The Qualitative Report
The use of mobile phones as an instructional tool by teachers is not yet widespread, and there is a need to enhance the literature on how this experience affects their metacognition. While existing literature focuses on students' experiences, little is known about the experiences of teachers. This qualitative study utilized an interpretative phenomenological analysis approach to examine the experiences of primary and secondary school teachers in Karachi, Pakistan, who used mobile devices for teaching online during the COVID-19 pandemic for at least 12 weeks. Nine participants were interviewed to collect data, and two themes emerged from the research: "Employed Metacognition …

Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) are the accelerator of choice in a variety of application domains, because they can accelerate massively parallel workloads and can be easily programmed using general-purpose programming frameworks such as CUDA and OpenCL. Each Streaming Multiprocessor (SM) contains an L1 data cache (L1D) to exploit the locality in data accesses. L1D misses are costly for GPUs for two reasons. First, L1D misses consume a lot of energy as they need to access the L2 cache (L2) via an on-chip network and the off-chip DRAM in case of L2 misses. Second, L1D misses impose performance overhead if the …

Method Of Selecting The Optimal Variant Of Mine Closure With The Possibility Of Capturing Methane From Underground Excavations, Marian Turek, Małgorzata Magdziarczyk
Journal of Sustainable Mining
The article presents a method of selecting the optimal option for the closure of a coal mine, from which it is planned to capture the methane remaining in the goaf and deposit it for many years for its economic use. Using the example of several options for the closure of one of the mines, for which the evaluation criteria have been defined, and the weights of their relevance have been determined, it is described how to create a special algorithm for the selection of the optimal option.

Translating Scientific Latin Texts With Artificial Intelligence: The Works Of Euler And Contemporaries, Sylvio R. Bistafa
Euleriana
The major hindrance in the study of earlier scientific literature is the availability of Latin translations into modern languages. This is particularly true for the works of Euler who authored about 850 manuscripts and wrote a thousand letters and received back almost two thousand more. The translation of many of these manuscripts, books and letters have been published in various sources over the last two centuries, but many more have not yet appeared. Fortunately, nowadays, artificial intelligence (AI) translation can be used to circumvent the challenges of translating such substantial number of texts. To validate this tool, benchmark tests have …

About The Cases In Which The Formula X^4+Mxxyy+Y^4 Can Be Reduced To A Square, Georg Ehlers
About The Cases In Which The Formula X^4+Mxxyy+Y^4 Can Be Reduced To A Square, Georg Ehlers
Euleriana
Euler continues a previous study on the title Quartic (E696) with a new approach. His starting point here is the observation that, when the title Quartic is solved for m, the resulting fraction becomes an integer when z=ax^2y^2-(x^2±y^2). He provides many quadratic forms for m that allow special solutions, and tables for |m|≤200. Even though the tables are known today to be incomplete, they allow an insight into the enormous amount of work that was needed for their compilation.
The interest in the title Quartic predates Euler, and the fact that he resumed the study indicates a …

Educational Equivalency Of Raspberry Pi Clusters In High-Performance Computing, Robert F. Houghton
Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology
High-performance computing is a difficult subject to teach in an academic setting, given the exorbitant costs and technical difficulties. Raspberry Pi single-board computers have been used in recent years to create clusters that function as mini high-performance computers. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the educational equivalence of building a Raspberry Pi cluster in comparison to running a high-performance computing environment. For this research, an eight-node cluster was built and tested in comparison to a laptop. Through the process of building the cluster, skills learned were documented to evaluate the educational value. This research concludes that the adequacy …
Deep Learning Approach In Melanoma Stage Classification, Frank Lemba Lemba, Clopas Kwenda
Deep Learning Approach In Melanoma Stage Classification, Frank Lemba Lemba, Clopas Kwenda
African Conference on Information Systems and Technology
Accurate and efficient classification of melanoma stages is crucial for effective treatment planning and improved patient outcomes. Traditional diagnostic methods are often time-consuming and subjective, highlighting the need for advanced computational approaches. This study proposes a self-supervised learning framework combined with a convolutional neural network (CNN) to classify melanoma stages more effectively. Initially, features are extracted from unlabeled skin images using pre-trained VGG16 and ResNet50 models. These features are combined and reduced in dimensionality using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Subsequently, K-means and DBSCAN clustering is applied to pseudo-label the data, providing a foundation for pre-training a CNN model. This pre-trained …

Towards An Ethical Framework For Artificial Intelligence Applications In Higher Education Teaching And Learning: A Conceptual Paper, Mariam Jacobs-Basadien, Shaun Pather
African Conference on Information Systems and Technology
Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED) has significant potential in terms of improving the learning and teaching experience. Despite the benefits that AI applications provide, Generative AI (GAI) has catalyzed global attention and fostered concern in the educational domain, especially in relation to ethical issues. The literature on the topic to date points to a need to better understand the parameters of responsible use of GAI in higher education. This is important, since universities are grappling with how this new technology could be appropriately integrated into the practice of teaching and learning as opposed to an initial reaction of concern. Although …

Production And Characterization Of Encapsulated Thymoquinone Loaded Bacterial Cellulose/Chitosan Composite Nano Film And Investigation Of Its In Vitro Antibacterial Activity, Aytul Bayraktar, Tunc Tuba
Journal of Food and Drug Analysis
In this study, nanostructured thin films were produced from thymoquinone (TQ)-loaded composites encapsulated with different ratios of bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) to chitosan (CS). The study aimed to investigate their characterization, antibacterial effects, and potential as drug film coating materials. Chemical features and morphological characteristics were determined, and release tests and antibacterial assays were conducted on the thin film layers. As a result, BNC/CS-thymoquinone composite films obtained at different ratios were found to exhibit the highest antibacterial effect, particularly films with a 70% BNC/CS to 30% thymoquinone ratio, against Salmonella typhimurium bacteria.

In this paper we investigate the issue of representation within the Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education (JMTE) and the broader academic publishing landscape, particularly focusing on the underrepresentation of authors from various world regions. A questionnaire, distributed globally, aimed to amplify the voices of the underrepresented, exploring the constraints and affordances of publishing in English-medium mathematics education research journals. The question that guided our investigation was: What do voices from the mathematics education community raise in their responses to questions about publishing in English-medium research journals like JMTE? We used qualitative methods to review the responses and identify common themes. …

Some Studies On Mathematical Morphology In Remotely Sensed Data Analysis, Geetika Barman
Doctoral Theses
The application of Mathematical Morphology (MM) techniques has proven to be beneficial in the extraction of shapebased and texture-based features during remote sensing image analysis. The characteristics of these techniques, such as nonlinear adaptability and comprehensive lattice structure, make them useful for contextual spatial feature analysis. Despite the advancements, there are still persistent challenges, including the curse of dimensionality, maintaining spatial correlation, and the adaptability of morphological operators in higher dimensions. The focus of this thesis is to explore the potential of MM-based methods to analyse spatial features in addressing these challenges, specifically in the context of spatialcontextual feature analysis …
Carbon Isotope Budget Indicates Biological Disequilibrium Dominated Ocean Carbon Storage At The Last Glacial Maximum, Anne Willem Omta
Carbon Isotope Budget Indicates Biological Disequilibrium Dominated Ocean Carbon Storage At The Last Glacial Maximum, Anne Willem Omta
Faculty Scholarship
Understanding the causes of the ~90 ppmv atmospheric CO2 swings between glacial and interglacial climates is an important open challenge in paleoclimate research. Although the regularity of the glacial-interglacial cycles hints at a single driving mechanism, Earth System models require many independent physical and biological processes to explain the full observed CO2 signal. Here we show that biologically sequestered carbon in the ocean can explain an atmospheric CO2 change of 75 ± 40 ppmv, based on a mass balance calculation using published carbon isotopic measurements. An analysis of the carbon isotopic signatures of different water masses indicates similar regenerated carbon …

Remote sensing tools, along with Global Navigation Satellite System cattle collars and digital soil maps, may help elucidate spatiotemporal relationships among soils, terrain, forages, and animals. However, standard computational procedures preclude systems-level evaluations across this continuum due to data inoperability and processing limitations. Deep learning, a subset of neural network, may elucidate efficiency of livestock production and linkages within the livestock-grazing environment. Consequently, we applied deep learning to environmental remote sensing data to (1) develop predictive models for yield and forage nutrition based on vegetation indices and (2) at a pixel-level (per 55 m2), identify how grazing is …
A Systematic Study Of Planetary Envelope Growth With 3d Radiation-Hydrodynamics Simulations, Avery Bailey, James M. Stone, Jeffrey Fung
A Systematic Study Of Planetary Envelope Growth With 3d Radiation-Hydrodynamics Simulations, Avery Bailey, James M. Stone, Jeffrey Fung
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Research
In the core accretion model of planet formation, envelope cooling regulates the accretion of material and ultimately sets the time-scale to form a giant planet. Given the diversity of planet-forming environments, opacity uncertainties, and the advective transport of energy by three-dimensional (3D) recycling flows, it is unclear whether one-dimensional models can adequately describe envelope structure and accretion in all regimes. Even in 3D models, it is unclear whether approximate radiative transfer methods sufficiently model envelope cooling, particularly at the planetary photosphere. To address these uncertainties, we present a suite of 3D radiation-hydrodynamics simulations employing methods that directly solve the transfer …

Enhancing Cardiomyocyte Resilience To Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury: The Therapeutic Potential Of An Indole-Peptide-Tempo Conjugate (Iptc), Shanshan Hou, Xin Yan, Xiang Gao, Steffen Jockusch, K. Michael Gibson, Zhiying Shan, Lanrong Bi
Michigan Tech Publications
Ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury leads to apoptosis and extensive cellular and mitochondrial damage, triggered by the early generation and subsequent accumulation of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS). This condition not only contributes to the pathology of I/R injury itself but is also implicated in a variety of other diseases, especially within the cardiovascular domain. Addressing mitochondrial oxidative stress thus emerges as a critical therapeutic target. In this context, our study introduces an indole-peptide-tempo conjugate (IPTC), a compound designed with dual functionalities: antioxidative properties and the ability to modulate autophagy. Our findings reveal that IPTC effectively shields H9C2 cardiomyocytes against hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) …
