Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: In the field of modeling and analyzing capabilities for operation system-of-systems (SoS), traditional structured capability assessment models lack the analysis of the interaction between both rivals and armies in different roles. The system model based on operation loop theory can be combined with the relationship between sensor, decision-making, influence, and target nodes for system capability calculation, but the existing model is usually only suitable for static analysis and cannot be used for dynamic simulation of SoS confrontation. In order to solve the problems above, a SoS confrontation simulation method based on operation loops is proposed. It abstracts both rivals’ …

Understanding how internal states such as satiety are connected to animal behavior is a fundamental question in neuroscience. Hydra vulgaris, a freshwater cnidarian with only 12 neuronal cell types, serves as a tractable model system for studying state-dependent behaviors. We found that starved hydras consistently move towards light, while fed hydras do not. By modeling this behavior as a set of three sequences of head orientation, jump distance and jump rate, we demonstrate that the satiety state only affects the rate of the animal jumping to a new position, while the orientation and jump distance are unaffected. These findings yield …

A High Step-Up Parallel Boost/Quasi-Z-Source Pwm Dc-Dc Converter For Photovoltaic Applications, Mahdi Rezvanyvardom
Emirates Journal for Engineering Research
In this article, a novel DC-DC converter is proposed, which is derived from the parallel combination of a conventional boost converter and a Quasi-Z-Source converter. This converter benefits from the features of both mentioned converters. Compared to similar structures, the proposed converter has a suitable gain. This is due to the parallel combination of two voltage-boosting structures, namely boost and Quasi-Z-Source. The simple and linear circuit operation of the converter is another advantage. On the other hand, the control circuit of the converter is also simple and can be designed as PWM. Due to the Quasi-interleaved structure at the input …

Human Capital At Home: Evidence From A Randomized Evaluation In The Philippines, Noam Angrist, Sarah Kabay, Dean S. Karlan, Lincoln Lau, Kevin M. Wong
Education Division Scholarship
Children spend most of their time at home in their early years, yet efforts to promote human capital at home in many low- and middle-income settings remain limited. We conduct a randomized controlled trial to evaluate an intervention which encourages parents and caregivers to foster human capital accumulation among their children between ages 3 and 5, with a focus on math and phonics skills. Children gain 0.52 and 0.51 standard deviations relative to the control group on math and phonics tests, respectively (p<0.001). A year later effects persist, but math gains dissipate to 0.15 (p=0.06) and phonics to 0.13 (p=0.12). Effects appear to be mediated largely through instructional support by parents and not other parent investment mechanisms, such as more positive parent-child interactions or additional time spent on education at home beyond the intervention. Our results show that parents can be effective conduits of educational instruction even in low-resource settings.

A Critical Evaluation Of Loss Aversion As The Determinate Of Effort In Compensation Framing, Timothy W. Shields, James Wilhelm
ESI Working Papers
A robust finding in managerial accounting research is that participants prefer contracts framed as bonuses to economically equivalent contracts framed as penalties. Another finding is that participants put forth more effort when facing penalty contracts than equivalent bonus contracts. Both results are commonly described as due to loss aversion, an integral portion of prospect theory. We test whether loss aversion is correlated with higher effort in an experiment with two parts. In the first part, we elicit individual participants' loss aversion using two measures. In the second part of the experiment, participants choose costly effort to increase the likelihood of …

We have implemented a cluster-continuum method using density functional theory (DFT) to model water clusters and various charged species derived from water. Two aims of this study are to determine the minimal basis required for proper modeling of water autoionization and the minimum number of explicit water molecules that are required to properly model the energetics of solvation. The thermodynamics of water autoionization converge following a modified power law to deliver chemically accurate values of the Gibbs energy change for autoionization with tractably small clusters. Convergence is slower and not exponential as assumed in previous work. We identify the n …

In this paper we introduce the concept of matrix-valued q-rational functions. In comparison to the classical case, we give different characterizations with principal emphasis on realizations and discuss algebraic manipulations. We also study the concept of Schur multipliers and complete Nevanlinna–Pick kernels in the context of q-deformed reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces and provide first applications in terms of an interpolation problem using Schur multipliers and complete Nevanlinna–Pick kernels.
