Community-Engaged Research Projects In School Settings: Science Teachers’ Practices And Reflections, Won Jung Kim Jan 2025

Community-Engaged Research Projects In School Settings: Science Teachers’ Practices And Reflections, Won Jung Kim

Teacher Education

Community-engaged research (CER) is a justice-oriented research paradigm that emphasizes equitable and reciprocal knowledge co-production with community members and organizations, sharing power, benefits, contributions, and responsibilities among all participants. This study explores nine teachers’ cases of facilitating CER projects in their respective school settings, aimed to support students’ critical consciousness and action for environmental issues and injustices. This study contributes to educational research by adapting an existing framework for CER for environmental justice that can guide K-12 teaching and research on it. By analyzing data from teacher community meetings and individual interviews in the CER framework, this study articulates classroom …

An Ultra-Low-Power 0.8 V, 60 Nw Temperature Sensor For Battery-Less Wireless Sensor Networks, Fnu Naveed, Jeff Dix

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

This work presents a nano-watt digital output temperature sensor featuring a supply-insensitive, self-biased current source. Second-order temperature dependencies of the MOS diode are canceled to produce a stable reference and a linear temperature-sensitive voltage. The sensor integrates a sensing unit, voltage-controlled differential ring oscillators, and a low-power frequency-to-digital converter, utilizing a resistor-less design to minimize power and area. The delay element in the ring oscillator reduces stage count, improving noise performance and compactness. Fabricated in 65 nm CMOS, the sensor occupies 0.02 mm2 and consumes 60 nW at 25 °C and 0.8 V. Measurements show an inaccuracy of +1.5/−1.6 °C …

Global Estimates Of The Storage And Transit Time Of Water Through Vegetation, Andrew Felton, Joshua B. Fisher, Koen Hufkens, Adam J. Purdy, Seth A. Spawn-Lee, Lou F. Duloisy, Gregory R. Goldsmith

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

The time it takes for water to transit from the ground back to the atmosphere affects weather, climate, biogeochemistry and ecosystem function. The transit time of water through vegetation, defined as the age of water transpiring from vegetation since time of entry, is a particularly understudied aspect of the terrestrial hydrologic cycle. Here we use a synergy of satellite remote sensing measurements over a five-year period to estimate global aboveground vegetation water storage to be on average 484 km3, roughly half of which is stored in Earth’s water-limited savannah, grassland and shrubland ecosystems. We then combine these storage …

Elementary Teachers’ Experiences Supporting The Academic Growth And Development Of Students On The Autism Spectrum In Inclusion Classrooms, Erica Williams Harryman Jan 2025

Elementary Teachers’ Experiences Supporting The Academic Growth And Development Of Students On The Autism Spectrum In Inclusion Classrooms, Erica Williams Harryman

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The problem addressed in this study is that elementary inclusion teachers in urban school districts in a northeastern state in the United States struggle to support the academic growth and development of their students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of these teachers and identify the institutional conditions they perceive as necessary to foster positive academic outcomes for students with ASD, informing the study's two research questions. Framed by Bandura’s social cognitive theory, particularly its principle of triadic reciprocality, the study employed a basic qualitative design. Twelve elementary inclusion teachers participated …

Rewind, Fast Forward, Record, Delete? Liberating Ourselves From The Past 500 Years, Ambeth R. Ocampo

Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

Significant differences emerge upon comparing the 1921 Carnaval de Magallanes conference and the 2021 Contacts and Continuities conference: A century ago, the Magellan expedition was celebrated; today it is merely commemorated, using Magellan as a springboard for a wider discussion. A century ago, the “discovery” of the Philippines was credited to Magellan; today, Magellan is rightly cast as an explorer, not the discoverer, of the Philippines. Furthermore, Magellan now shares the glory of the first circumnavigation of the globe with Sebastian Elcano. The seven papers from a century ago had Spain and Mexico as reference points; today, research and discussion …

Connecting The Dots: From The Mythical East To The “Real Asia”, Paulo Jorge De Sousa Pinto Jan 2025

Connecting The Dots: From The Mythical East To The “Real Asia”, Paulo Jorge De Sousa Pinto

Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

Magellan opened a new connecting link among Europe, Asia, and America, paving the way for the formation of a global world. But it was also a point of arrival of a long process that went back to antiquity. For many centuries, Europe and Asia had a fragmentary and distorted image of each other. In Europe, confusing notions of “East,” “Asia,” or “India” crossed antiquity and the Middle Ages and mixed fabulous tales with real data about what was beyond the Persian Empire or, later, the Muslim world. The information circulated mainly through land trade routes. In the fifteenth century, Iberian …

Doing Doctorates Differently: The Parapedagogic Potentialities Of The Phd Process, Helen Bowstead, Ken Gale, Mary Catherine Garland, Claire Walsh

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

Coming together in this conference collectivity, these are doctorates that in their doing – thinking, researching, writing, supervising, assessing, publishing – live by “no preexisting rules, processes, methods, categories or ‘determining judgement’.”1 They are doctorates that “cannot be taught or learned.”23 Such PhDs – thesis’ refusing to (con)form – in their ever probing, in-forming, stubborn curiousness of problematics living beyond solution driven research, lead to transformative moments in the act of learning, that in their difference are “...made sense of, not in terms of what [they] mean but in terms of what [they] do.”4Yet in their difference, doctorates working within …

Bridging Taste And Health: The Role Of Machine Learning In Consumer Food Selection, Saroj Adhikari, Brandon R. Mcfadden

Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Faculty Publications and Presentations

Navigating the modern food landscape is complex, often leading consumers to make suboptimal dietary choices due to information, time constraints, and psychological vulnerabilities. Machine learning (ML) presents a promising solution to enhance the contemporary grocery shopping experience by providing personalized dietary recommendations tailored to individual preferences and characteristics. Traditional methods of dietary guidance cannot account for nuanced consumer characteristics and preferences. In contrast, ML algorithms can incorporate specific information about individuals and continuously adapt to provide personalized recommendations, considering factors like historical eating habits, socio-demographics, nutritional requirements, etc. This paper explores the potential value of ML in enhancing personalized dietary …

Studying The Low-Lying Structure Of 9b Via The 10b(3he,A)9b Reaction, Rachel M. Shaffer Jan 2025

Studying The Low-Lying Structure Of 9b Via The 10b(3he,A)9b Reaction, Rachel M. Shaffer

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The unstable nature of 9B makes it a challenging isotope to study. The first-excited state of 9B has been particularly difficult to characterize. Since the first experimental observation of this state in 1955, many experimental and theoretical nuclear structure studies have sought to classify it, but with large discrepancies in the energy and width values from these results, the properties of the state remain inconclusive.

An experiment using the 10B(3He,α)9B reaction was performed at the John D. Fox Superconducting Linear Accelerator Laboratory at Florida State University in an effort to populate and characterize …

Baryon Number Violation Search, Tyler D. Stokes Jan 2025

Baryon Number Violation Search, Tyler D. Stokes

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Understanding the fundamental forces and symmetries of nature has long been a central goal of particle physics. While the Standard Model (SM) provides a successful framework, it does not guarantee the conservation of baryon number B or lepton number L, thus motivating searches for their violation. Proton decay, a fundamental process violating B, has been at the forefront of experimental searches for decades.

The discovery of the weak neutral current in 1973 unified the electromagnetic and weak forces and inspired the creation of Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) that also unify the strong force. In 1974, the first-ever GUT, …

A subset of the vertex set of a graph is geodetically convex if it contains every vertex on any shortest path between two elements of the set. The convex hull of a set of vertices is the smallest convex set containing the set. We study variations of two games introduced by Buckley and Harary, where two players take turns selecting previously-unselected vertices of a graph until the convex hull of the jointly-selected vertices becomes too large. The last player to move is the winner. The achievement game ends when the convex hull contains every vertex. In the avoidance game, the …

Curated undergraduate research experiences have been widely used at colleges and universities for decades to build student interest, technical preparation, and confidence in the pursuit of scientific careers. Educators often employ standardized survey instruments to evaluate learning outcomes for research experiences, but many of these assessments consider only technical skill development and career interests and are not rooted in discrete pedagogical theories. As higher education aims to create inclusive and equitable learning experiences for students, we argue that pedagogical assessment tools for undergraduate research experiences need to expand to consider outcomes such as increased science literacy, confidence in relational “soft” …

Effects Of Fire Recurrence And Severity On Mediterranean Vegetation Dynamics: Implications For Structure And Composition In Southern Spain, Macarena Ortega, Ángel Lora, Larissa Yocom, Rafael Zumaquero, Juan Ramón Molina

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Most Mediterranean ecosystems have been profoundly shaped by wildfires, driving the evolution of plant species. Through photo interpretation and field inventories, this research assessed vegetation dynamics from 1984 to 2021, examining how fire severity and recurrence, key fire regime variables, influenced changes in structure and woody species diversity. Using two burn scars (1988 and 2006), we identified four scenarios dominated by Pinus pinea tree species: control (unburned), areas burned once (either in 1988 or 2006), and twice (in both 1988 and 2006).

Areas affected by two high-severity fires experienced the most pronounced expansion of dense shrubland. However, when fire severity …

Mental Rotation: Psychometric Analysis Of The Online Purdue Spatial Visualization Test: Rotations And Relationships Between Mental Rotation Skill And Engineering Undergraduate Success, Savanna Dautle

Theses and Dissertations

“Literature shows that spatial skills, and in particular, mental rotation skills, are predictors of success in STEM. Students who have strong spatial visualization skills are more likely to demonstrate better academic performance and higher graduation rates in STEM. Several instruments are used to measure mental rotation skills, most of which are paper-based… To measure the range of skills typically seen in undergraduate engineering students, the PSVT:R has been historically preferred for its use of a variety of 3-dimensional shapes, which are appropriately challenging to visualize, and for its established reliability and validity [using classical test theory]. Emotional Intelligence And Socioemotional Attributes: Distinct Constructs And Their Uses, John D. Mayer, David R. Caruso Jan 2025

Emotional Intelligence And Socioemotional Attributes: Distinct Constructs And Their Uses, John D. Mayer, David R. Caruso

UNH Personality Lab

We examine evidence for the validity of different measures under the label emotional intelligence (EI). Some measures are valid for the assessment of EI and others are valid for the assessment of socioemotional attributes (SEA). The constructs of EI and SEA are defined and measures of each described, along with the mental response processes the measures elicit: test-takers’ abilities, self-estimated attributes, or observer reports. Both EI and SEA measures are valid but for distinctly different purposes, and the two classes of measures make different predictions. We add our voices to those who have advocated for dropping the EI label from …

Chemistry Department Faculty Articles

We investigated the tribological, thermal, kinetic, and surface microtextural characteristics of chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) of 300 mm p-type <100> prime silicon wafers (and their native oxide) at various pressures, sliding velocities, and starting platen temperatures. Results showed the dominant tribological mechanism for both native oxide and silicon polishing to be boundary lubrication. Using frictional data, we pinpointed the exact time that corresponded to the total removal of the native oxide and the onset of silicon polishing. This allowed us to separately characterize removal rates of each layer. For native oxide, while the rate depended on temperature, the presence of a …

Characterization Of Vaccine-Enhanced Humoral Immune Responses Against Emergent Sars-Cov-2 Variants In A Convalescent Cohort, Jared Sheehan, Amber J. Trauth, Michael E. Hagensee, Alistair J. Ramsay

School of Graduate Studies Faculty Publications

Vaccination of COVID-19–convalescent individuals may generate ‘hybrid’ immunity of enhanced magnitude, durability, and cross-reactive breadth. Our primary goal was to characterize hybrid antibody (Ab) responses in a patient cohort infected with ancestral Wuhan-Hu-1 virus and vaccinated between 6 and 10 months later with the Wuhan-Hu-1–based BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine. We were particularly interested in determining the efficacy of neutralizing Ab responses against subsequently emergent SARS-CoV-2 variants. Sera collected at 3-monthly intervals over a period of 12 months were analyzed by ELISA for SARS-CoV-2 RBD–specific Ab responses, and also for neutralizing Ab activity using pseudovirus-based neutralization assays. We found that convalescent RBD-reactive …

Theses and Dissertations

This masters thesis proposes an innovative approach to satellite image segmentation by focusing on the detection and mapping of walking, hiking, and biking trails. The motivation behind this project comes from the underexplored area in segmentation techniques for trail identification and offers potential benefits for urban planning, environmental monitoring, and public health. The problem statement addresses the need for a model that can differentiate between various trail types and other natural or man-made elements. The project aims for efficiency and scalability in processing satellite imagery across different compute hardware. The work details several stages: researching existing segmentation techniques, specifically road …

Objectives: Multiplex immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence (mIHC/IF) are emerging technologies that can be used to help define complex immunophenotypes in tissue, quantify immune cell subsets, and assess the spatial arrangement of marker expression. mIHC/IF assays require concerted efforts to optimize and validate the multiplex staining protocols prior to their application on slides. The best practice guidelines for staining and validation of mIHC/IF assays across platforms were previously published by this task force. The current effort represents a complementary manuscript for mIHC/IF analysis focused on the associated image analysis and data management.

Methods: The Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer convened a task …

Cloud Microphysical Response To Entrainment Of Dry Air Containing Aerosols, Jae Min Yeom, Hamed F. Sadi, Jesse Anderson, Fan Yang, Will Cantrell, Raymond Shaw

Michigan Tech Publications

Impacts of aerosol particles on clouds, precipitation, and climate remain one of the significant uncertainties in climate change. Aerosol particles entrained at cloud top and edge can affect cloud microphysical and macrophysical properties, but the process is still poorly understood. Here we investigate the cloud microphysical responses to the entrainment of aerosol-laden air in the Pi convection-cloud chamber. Results show that cloud droplet number concentration increases and mean radius of droplets decreases, which leads to narrower droplet size distribution and smaller relative dispersion. These behaviors are generally consistent with the scenario expected from the first aerosol-cloud indirect effect for a …

Divergent Bodyminds: Kin In The Difference, Ruth Churchill Dower, Claire Walsh

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

In breaking the habit of ‘making sense’ typified by normative, neurotypical modes of engagement with the world, neurodiverse sociality performs a treachery in relation to prescriptive, dominating forms of normative reality. Within this conference paper, a modest site of resistance, a reconsideration of neurotypical normative reality takes place, extending beyond the boundaries underpinning neurotypical hegemonic discourse about ‘human’ reality, identity and existence: rescinding the neurotypical “normative standard for human experience” requiring the mapping of bodies in advance, to foreground bodies in excess, neurodiverse bodies subject to patterns and rhythms that defy stable or coherent identification. As bodies “always extending beyond …

Techniques For Deriving An Llm Agent Trust Score For Dynamically Triggering Human-In-The-Loop (Hil) Feedback In Realtime For An Llm Agentic Workflow, Akram Sheriff

Defensive Publications Series

Techniques are proposed herein for deriving an adaptive and coherent agentic trust score in a multi-agentic system, which can be used to trigger a human-in-the-loop (HIL) workflow. Since not all workflows may require HIL feedback, the agent trust score can be used for decision making, in real-time, to determine whether or not HIL feedback is required for a given workflow. The techniques prioritize trust by establishing metrics across data boundaries, Application Programming Interface (API) reliability, and metadata compliance, each contributing to the agent trust score derivation. Thus, the real-time agentic scoring system proposed herein may foster confidence in Large Language …
