Haptic Processing: How The Shutter Button Shapes Photography, Sean Scanlan Mar 2025

Haptic Processing: How The Shutter Button Shapes Photography, Sean Scanlan

Publications and Research

The goal of this essay is to explore the haptics of taking photographs in the digital age. More specifically, I examine the evolving relationship between the body and imaging technologies. The body must, somehow, interact with the camera shutter, whether the shutter is a simple mechanical door or an electrical timing network switch. Human intention has to activate the switch via a button, even if this intention is complicated: since 2012, mobile phones can take photos using voice commands, relieving the need to physically touch the shutter button. One does not necessarily need to use the fundamental levers often associated …

Nanostructure Retention To 1100 °C In Soft-Templated Niobium Tungstates Using Dual-Carbon Strategy, Sean C. Wechsler, Alexander Gregg, Coby S. Collins, Santosh Kiran Balijepalli, Morgan Stefik Mar 2025

Nanostructure Retention To 1100 °C In Soft-Templated Niobium Tungstates Using Dual-Carbon Strategy, Sean C. Wechsler, Alexander Gregg, Coby S. Collins, Santosh Kiran Balijepalli, Morgan Stefik

Faculty Publications

Mesoporous metal oxides (MMOs) have diverse applications including energy storage, catalysis, and separation membranes. Block polymer structure directing agents enable the control of morphology and pore size, however preservation of the nanostructure is often limited to a narrow range of heat treatment temperatures which constrains the tailoring of defect chemistries. High temperature treatments typically lead to collapse of the porous structure as surface area is reduced during crystal growth. Here, using a mesoporous niobium tungstate it is shown that neither in situ carbon generation nor ex situ carbon infiltration alone enable preservation of the ordered mesostructure at temperatures high enough …

Tax Experience Isn’T Everything: A Tale Of Two Justices., Reuven S. Avi-Yonah Mar 2025

Tax Experience Isn’T Everything: A Tale Of Two Justices., Reuven S. Avi-Yonah

Articles

Any student of federal income taxation is familiar with a series of important Supreme Court tax decisions written by Justice Harry Blackmun (associate justice, 1970-1994). They would also know of three important decisions written by his contemporary, Justice Thurgood Marshall (associate justice, 1967-1991). It is interesting to compare the two, because Blackmun was the only recent justice with extensive tax practice experience, whereas Marshall had none. Yet, most of Blackmun’s tax opinions were wrong while Marshall’s opinions were right.

Smart Resolutions: Exploring The Role Of Artificial Intelligence In Alternative Dispute Resolution, Nadia Ahmad

Cleveland State Law Review

Artificial intelligence (AI) has had a significant impact on most industries, including the legal landscape. Effective AI incorporation has removed barriers to access to justice, resolving issues such as backlogged court systems and inadequate resources for pursuing claims. Similarly, the expediency and cost-effectiveness associated with alternative dispute resolution (ADR) have established ADR as a mainstay in most countries to enhance legal accessibility. It was inevitable that AI and ADR were integrated to efficiently deliver justice.

Most automated ADR systems implemented thus far have been with human intervention. As machine learning develops, there are efforts to completely automate ADR, and this …

Diabetes Behind Bars: Dissecting Diabetic Deliberate Indifference And Delivering Inmates A More Workable Standard Under The Fourth Amendment, Maggie J. Malloy Mar 2025

Diabetes Behind Bars: Dissecting Diabetic Deliberate Indifference And Delivering Inmates A More Workable Standard Under The Fourth Amendment, Maggie J. Malloy

Cleveland State Law Review

This Note examines the inadequacies of the current Eighth Amendment framework in safeguarding the constitutional rights of diabetic inmates. It contends that the subjective element of the two-pronged Eighth Amendment claim—often used to assess deliberate indifference—leads to unfair and inconsistent outcomes. To address these shortcomings, this Note draws inspiration from the objective analysis employed in Fourth Amendment excessive force claims, specifically referencing the Supreme Court’s decision in Graham v. Connor. This new framework eliminates the subjective element, and instead replaces it with three objective factors courts should consider when evaluating Eighth Amendment violations related to diabetic medical care. Through …

The Role Of Homocysteine Redox Chemistry In Biomolecular Mechanisms, Megha Gupta Mar 2025

The Role Of Homocysteine Redox Chemistry In Biomolecular Mechanisms, Megha Gupta

Dissertations and Theses

Homocysteine at elevated levels is a well-known independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. However, it is still unclear, after large scale clinical trials, involving tens of thousands of patients, whether homocysteine is a disease mediator or marker. The disconnect between the basic science showing the association of homocysteine with cardiovascular disease and the outcomes of clinical trials based on vitamin therapy for homocysteine lowering, highlights the need for insights into the molecular mechanisms linking homocysteine to cardiovascular disease and other pathologies. For example, elevated homocysteine levels have also been associated with risk for stroke, venous thromboembolism, Alzheimer's disease, neural tube …

A Novel Sensitivity Maximization At A Given Specificity Method For Binary Classifications, Seyyed Mahmood Ghasemi, Chunhui Gu, Johannes F Fahrmann, Samir Hanash, Kim-Anh Do, James P Long, Ehsan Irajizad

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

In the cancer early detection field, logistic regression (LR) is a frequently used approach to establish a combination rule that differentiates cancer from noncancer. However, the application of LR relies on a maximum likelihood approach, which may not yield optimal combination rules for maximizing sensitivity at a clinically desirable specificity and vice versa. In this article, we have developed an improved regression framework, sensitivity maximization at a given specificity (SMAGS), for binary classification that finds the linear decision rule, yielding the maximum sensitivity for a given specificity or the maximum specificity for a given sensitivity. We additionally expand the framework …

The "Distributed Ghost" With Independence - A Study On Computational Ability Of Skewed Asynchronous Cellular Automata, Shrey Salvi, Shlok Shelat, Sumit Adak, Souvik Roy Mar 2025

The "Distributed Ghost" With Independence - A Study On Computational Ability Of Skewed Asynchronous Cellular Automata, Shrey Salvi, Shlok Shelat, Sumit Adak, Souvik Roy

Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)

This paper explores the computational ability of ``distributed ghost" cellular automata (CA) \cite{10.1162/artl_e_00450} after introducing independence in the updating scheme. Traditionally, the CA system dictates all cells to update together following the concept of the global clock. To introduce independence in the system, CA researchers have introduced the notion of fully asynchronous updating scheme with atomicity property where, again, the CA system dictates two neighbouring cells not to update together. In this study, we explore the skewed asynchronous system after breaking the atomicity property. Specifically, we study the computational ability of the proposed skewed asynchronous system in the context of …
