How Do Collective Agreements Stack Up? Implications For Academic Freedom, Tim Ribaric, Rahul Kumar Mar 2025

How Do Collective Agreements Stack Up? Implications For Academic Freedom, Tim Ribaric, Rahul Kumar

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

Abstract Academic freedom, a cornerstone of higher education, is formally codified within the enforceable language of collective agreements (CAs) between universities and faculty unions in Canada. While the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT) provides an exemplar framework for academic freedom clauses, institutional interpretations and implementations vary significantly. This study comprehensively analyzed CAs from 44 Canadian universities using computational text analysis methods, specifically Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) and Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF). The analysis revealed that approximately 27% of institutions closely align with the CAUT exemplar, while 57% incorporate additional limiting factors that qualify the exercise of academic freedom. …

Frozen-Core Analytical Gradients Within The Adiabatic Connection Random-Phase Approximation From An Extended Lagrangian, Jefferson E. Bates, Henk Eshuis

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The implementation of the frozen-core option in combination with the analytic gradient of the random-phase approximation (RPA) is reported based on a density functional theory reference determinant using resolution-of-the-identity techniques and an extended Lagrangian. The frozen-core option reduces the dimensionality of the matrices required for the RPA analytic gradient, thereby yielding a reduction in computational cost. A frozen core also reduces the size of the numerical frequency grid required for accurate treatment of the correlation contributions using Curtis-Clenshaw quadratures, leading to an additional speedup. Optimized geometries for closed-shell, main-group, and transition metal compounds, as well as open-shell transition metal complexes, …

Based on the physical simulation experiments using similar materials, numerical calculations, and theoretical analysis, this study delved into the seepage evolution patterns of fractures in the …

Thermodynamic Water Activity Explains The Unusual Electrochemical Stability Of Aqueous Deep Eutectic Solvents, Desiree Mae Prado, Aaron Niño Gonzaga, Clemens Burda Mar 2025

Thermodynamic Water Activity Explains The Unusual Electrochemical Stability Of Aqueous Deep Eutectic Solvents, Desiree Mae Prado, Aaron Niño Gonzaga, Clemens Burda

Faculty Scholarship

The presence of water in nonaqueous deep eutectic solvent (DES) electrolytes has been debated in recent years, with efforts ranging from its complete removal to willful addition. It was shown that controlled amounts of water can be beneficial, as it not only enhances the physicochemical properties of these electrolytes but also has no significant detrimental effects on their electrochemical stability. Despite these advantages, there is still limited understanding of how water interacts with DES systems at the molecular level. This study examines the water activity in ethylene glycol and glycerol, as well as their binary mixtures with choline chloride to …

Participants involved in this study completed a survey involving seven multiple-choice questions aligned with the dimensions of burnout …

Imu-Mechanized Discrete Error-State Kalman Filtering With Lie-Group Pose Representations, Daniel P. Koch Mar 2025

Imu-Mechanized Discrete Error-State Kalman Filtering With Lie-Group Pose Representations, Daniel P. Koch

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates methodologies for consistent Kalman filtering with Lie-group based representations of the vehicle pose. Early results are centered around the relative navigation framework, which maintains filter observability and consistency by only tracking the state relative to the latest keyframe of an odometry system such as visual odometry or laser scan matching. A detailed derivation of a relative multiplicative extended Kalman filter, using a quaternion parameterization of the attitude state, is presented for application to multirotor vehicles. The remainder of the dissertation focuses on Kalman filtering using a Lie-group SE(3) pose representation, which improves filter consistency by correctly modeling …
