Poetic Philosophy And The Moralization Of Social Networks, Finn Janning Mar 2025

Poetic Philosophy And The Moralization Of Social Networks, Finn Janning

Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis

In this paper, I aim to explore the question, “What distinguishes philosophy in its original sense? ” My intent is not to provide a historical overview of philosophy, but to concentrate on what makes philosophy a liberating practice. I argue that this practice is rooted in its poetic and affirmative way of organizing life. To emphasize this idea, I contrast it with the presumed organization found in social media and networks. While social media and networks encourages commitment by simplifying complexity, they also restrict users' freedom, responsibility, and ability to make meaningful decisions. To support these claims, I examine the …

Constructed Wetlands: A Sustainable Solution For Wastewater Treatment In Ireland, Dominic M. Hernandez, Jeanne Sumrall

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Effective wastewater treatment is crucial for maintaining water quality in Ireland. This study examined the performance of constructed wetlands as a potential solution, by analyzing three research articles. It was found that CWs are effective in reducing pollutants, with one highlighting the seasonal impacts on phosphorus retention, one demonstrating significant nitrogen and pathogen removals, and one another revealing limitations in long-term phosphorus and nitrogen removal. These studies indicated overall that CWs offer a sustainable solution for wastewater treatment. Future research should focus on optimizing system designs and environmental factors, as those were shown to have a significant impact on CW …

Coastal Erosion In Ireland, Brian Nguyen, Jeanne Sumrall Mar 2025

Coastal Erosion In Ireland, Brian Nguyen, Jeanne Sumrall

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Ireland's approach to managing its coastlines focuses more on a short-term solution method rather than long-term, eco-friendly solutions. Their coastal defenses are created upon an immediate need without clear policies and sufficient research. As a result, beach ecosystems are frequently damaged, and the erosion is only reduced to a certain extent. To reduce erosion and protect both the environment and Irish culture, this study suggests that Ireland should implement national policies focused on regularly monitoring coastal erosion, researching nature-based solutions, and implementing them to address the problem. Moving forward, it’s important for research to focus on understanding the overall impact …

Study Of The Influence Of Variability In The Distance Between Cracks On The Type Of Strength Distribution Of Structural Elements, R. Mekhtiev Mar 2025

Study Of The Influence Of Variability In The Distance Between Cracks On The Type Of Strength Distribution Of Structural Elements, R. Mekhtiev

Baku Mathematical Journal

The considered theories and concepts of strength are based on a model of a body either as a homogeneous structureless medium, or as a material that has a structure, but is homogeneous throughout its entire volume. Rocks are certainly not such bodies. They are composed of mineral grains of different properties, contain macrodefects in the form of pores and various inclusions, as well as objects of different states of aggregation (gases, liquids). Under these conditions, deterministic theories of strength are clearly untenable.

Baku Mathematical Journal

In this paper, we analyse a mathematical model of a cross-diffusion and selfdiffusion system describing the dynamics of fish and zooplankton population. A type III Holling functional response was used in the formulation of the model taking into account the effect of fishing in the ecosystem. Satisfactory results concerning the local and global existence properties of the solutions. Persistence conditions as well as the local stability of equilibrium states are established. We have shown in particular that, under certain conditions, cross-diffusion can trigger the emergence of spatial patterns. Numerical experiments are performed to visualize complex spatial patterns and dynamic behaviour …

The Effect Of Using An Electronic Program With Supplementary Tools On The Development Of Futsal Officiating Performance Among Female Students Of The College Of Physical Education And Sport Sciences, Maryam Abduljabbar Khudair, Félix Arbinaga

Modern Sport

Due to the numerous motor and performance skills required of female students in futsal refereeing during college lessons, along with the constant need to reposition themselves and move within the playing field, continuous monitoring and repetition are essential to minimize potential errors during performance. These errors may arise from failing to assume the correct position or delays in signalling officiating gestures. Addressing this issue necessitated the implementation of an electronic program and supplementary tools—such as electronic games, scientific posters illustrating officiating signals, and other instructional aids—since these serve as guiding tools that direct individuals toward correct performance by distinguishing between …

A Note On The Kernel Estimation Of Atkinson’S Index Of Inequality, University Of Kara, Kara, Togo, K. Agbokou, K.M. Midagbodji, University Of Lom´E, Lom´E, Togo

Baku Mathematical Journal

World Bank macrodata of every country on our planet show that national incomes per capita account for a major part of population disparity and these follow usual distributions well known in the literature in almost all continents. Measuring and comparing disparity is a huge task that requires assembling the relative nature of small and large national incomes without distinctions. This is the main reason that pushes us to consider in this paper the Atkinson inequality index (continuous case) developed towards the end of the 20th century in order to measure this disparity. Since then its nonparametric estimator has not been …

Memgb-Diff: Memory-Efficient Multivariate Gaussian Bias Diffusion Model For 3d Bias Field Correction, Shuo Li Mar 2025

Memgb-Diff: Memory-Efficient Multivariate Gaussian Bias Diffusion Model For 3d Bias Field Correction, Shuo Li

Faculty Scholarship

Bias fields inevitably degrade MRI that seriously interferes the diagnosis of physicians for accurate analysis, and removing it is a crucial image analysis task. Generative models (such as GANs) are used for bias field correction, and outperform traditional methods, however are hindered by the high cost of data annotation and instability during training. Recently, the diffusion-based methods have excelled over GANs in many applications, and they are powerful in removing noise from images, while the bias field can be regarded as a smooth noise. However, it is a challenge to directly apply to 3D bias field correction due to sampling …

The presented study is a comparison between a global numerical model and a scale physical model, of a dynamic power cable during an operational sea state and a 1-in-50-year storm. Ocean basin experiments were performed with a 1:70 scale model of a dynamic power cable, connected in a tethered wave configuration to a semi-submersible FOWT in water depth representing 70 m, in the COAST laboratory at the University of Plymouth. Measured values of the physical model were used in the …

The Bullwhip: Time-To-Build And Sectoral Fluctuations, Yan Leng, Ernest Liu, Yifei Ren, Tsyvinski Aleh Mar 2025

The Bullwhip: Time-To-Build And Sectoral Fluctuations, Yan Leng, Ernest Liu, Yifei Ren, Tsyvinski Aleh

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We develop a theory of sectoral fluctuations driven by the propagation of demand shocks along supply chains with heterogeneous time-to-build production. We solve the model in closed form. Downstream producers respond directly to current demand. Upstream producers, due to time-to-build delays, respond to anticipated future demand. Consequently, hump-shaped demand shocks to downstream goods propagate and amplify along the supply chain, generating pronounced volatility in upstream sectors and creating the bullwhip effect. Empirically and quantitatively, we show that the bullwhip is significant across downstream sectors that are important for final consumption.

ABSTRACT

The 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic has caused the world to focus on the transition of learning environments that are more digital and virtual than any other time in educational history. Schools all over the world were required to adjust not only the mode of instruction, such as in virtual, hybrid, or in-person, but also create guidelines and procedures that reduce the amount of interaction between the teacher and the student (Garbe, Ogurlu, Uzeyir, & Cook, 2020). The research questions that guided this study were: 1) What are the experiences of five Biology teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic in transitioning to …

How To Create A Distinctly Native Journal, Larry W. Chavis Mar 2025

How To Create A Distinctly Native Journal, Larry W. Chavis

Indigenous Business & Public Administration

In this essay, I describe three characteristics that Indigenous Business and Public Administration should aim to develop to be a distinctly Native journal. The journal should not be contained by dominant stereotypes of Native Americans. It should reflect the adaptability and innovation that Native Americans have shown in surviving the continuing colonial endeavor to erase us. Finally, the relationships between members of this community should be prioritized at least as much as the content. I developed these characteristics by reflecting on my experiences in higher education along with the ideas of other Native scholars.

Human Security And The Idiot: “Can Beauty Really Save The World”, Aaron Tyler Mar 2025

Human Security And The Idiot: “Can Beauty Really Save The World”, Aaron Tyler

The Journal of Social Encounters

A key point of progress in the systematic considerations of the causality and cessation of violent conflict is found in the evolving idea of human security. In a collective effort to respond to the chaotic reality of violent engagement, human security emerged toward the end of the twentieth century as a multilateral, person-centered paradigm for thinking about and pursuing conflict transformation. As human security enters a third generation of development, scholars and policymakers continue to discern the usefulness of this holistic, multilateral paradigm for security. The efficacy of human security outcomes will depend on how the individual and collective within …
