The Medicine From Nature; Finding The Antibacterial Power Of Essential Oils, Josi Maness, Seoyeon Kim, Eric T. Gillock
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Essential oils are known to have pharmaceutical effects such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticarcinogenic properties. These days, there are various types of essential oils that are commonly used for coughing or to promote good sleep.
We prepared 19 different essential oils to find the essential oil that has the most antibiotic properties by putting drops of oil on a soy agar plate with Serratia marcescens. As a result, cinnamon cassia essential oil was most effective, and five of them didn't have antibiotic properties.
We also tested with six different types of antibiotics, and as a result, only three of them …
Ancestral Sequence Reconstruction On Antibiotic-Resistance Bacteria, Jeyun Park
Ancestral Sequence Reconstruction On Antibiotic-Resistance Bacteria, Jeyun Park
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
The spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria poses a global health threat, and it is predominantly driven by enzymes that neutralize antibiotics or alter their drug targets. This study uses Ancestral Sequence Reconstruction (ASR) to explore the evolutionary history of a key bacterial enzyme that plays a role in antibiotic resistance. Protein sequences were aligned, and a phylogenetic tree constructed utilizing MEGA 11. Ancestral sequences are predicted to identify the conserved regions that are essential for enzyme function. Understanding these conserved locations provides insights into potential drug targets for developing new drugs against resistant strains of bacteria.

Experimenting With Machine Learning Using Diabetes Datasets, Wyatt Mcdonnell, Hongbiao Zeng
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
The purpose of this research is to understand how to implement machine learning in a practical scenario. There were two diabetes datasets[5][6] used for testing the machine learning models. These datasets contain information relevant to a person’s health, as well as whether that subject had diabetes. I used a total of four models, and three of those models were manually programmed. The model which was not manually programmed was used for comparison with a similar model. This research directly compares and shows the factors which affect the efficiency of each machine learning model.

The Urgency Of Instituting Systemic Cybersecurity Curriculum Within Stem At Secondary Educational Levels In Preparation For Postsecondary Institutions., Robert Spencer
Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
Over the last 20 years, many secondary institutions have made advances developing curriculum defined as “STEM (Science, Engineering and Mathematics)” in order to ensure secondary students are eligible to apply as well excel in technology degree programs at the college and university levels. Although various initiatives exist, there are studies however, which allude to a great possibility that there will be a lack of cybersecurity professionals filling present day and anticipated future positions. Despite a large number of federal and educational enhancements there is need for additional research regarding instituting overall systemic processes and curriculum which supports secondary student transition …

Spotify Recommender Using Content Filtering, Colin M. Anderson
SPARK Symposium Presentations
This project is a music recommender system that analyzes Spotify data to establish relationships between songs by analyzing their musical components. A user can receive recommendations through two methods. Firstly, the user can select a song from the database that they enjoy, and the system will provide them with a list of recommendations, as well as predict the genre of the song that they have entered. Secondly, the user can set personalized values for various musical features (i.e. energy, danceability). In either case, by selecting a number 1 to 5 recommendations that the user would like, they will get that …
Optimizing Transcription Efficiency Through Mutations In The T7 Rna Polymerase, Claire N. Novak
Optimizing Transcription Efficiency Through Mutations In The T7 Rna Polymerase, Claire N. Novak
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
The production of RNA is vital for many commercial and research purposes, with one of the more notable reasons being vaccine production. The RNA polymerase, derived from T7 bacteriophage, is commonly used for RNA production due to its ability to produce full-length RNA transcripts. However, researchers have faced limitations in optimizing this polymerase. For example, the polymerase generates heterogeneous RNA products that require additional purification steps during RNA production. Here, we selected three amino acid point substitutions based on a recent publication from Moderna that showed increased RNA purity compared to the wild type T7 RNA polymerase sequence. We created …

The Tate Resolution Over A Complete Intersection Ring, Kolton O'Neal
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Given a Noetherian commutative ring R and an ideal I ⊆ R, Tate provided a construction in [5] to produce a DG R-algebra that is also a free resolution for R/I. In this work, we review free resolutions and DG algebras, describe Tate’s construction, and present a proof of a result from Tate’s paper about his construction when a regular sequence is involved. Specifically, this result is that it only takes two steps of Tate’s construction to resolve a characteristic 0 field k over k[[x1, . . . , xn]]/(f1, . . . , fc), where f1, . . . …

Integrated Geophysical Modeling Of Newly Identified Pseudofaults Within Southern Cascadia Subduction Zone, Morgan R. Madsen
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
The Cascadia Subduction Zone, located off the western coast of North America, has a long history of seismic activity, causing various geohazards such as megathrust earthquakes and tsunamis for the coastal population (Goldfinger et al., 2000; Tréhu et al., 2022). It is necessary to identify areas of greater risk, as seismic hazards will continue to affect the area due to ongoing subduction of the oceanic Juan de Fuca plate beneath the North American continent. Heavily fractured, weakened zones of oceanic crust, known as propagator wakes and pseudofaults, have been shown to correlate with greater seismicity (Ashraf and Filina, 2023a). Propagator …

Global hepatic DNA methylation change has been linked to human patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). DNA demethylation is regulated by the TET family proteins, whose enzymatic activities require 2-oxoglutarate (2-OG) and iron that both are elevated in human MASLD patients. We aimed to investigate liver TET1 in MASLD progression. Depleting TET1 using two different strategies substantially alleviated MASLD progression. Knockout (KO) of TET1 slightly improved diet induced obesity and glucose homeostasis. Intriguingly, hepatic cholesterols, triglycerides, and CD36 were significantly decreased upon TET1 depletion. Consistently, liver specific TET1 KO led to improvement of MASLD progression. Mechanistically, TET1 promoted …

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
The authors present an in-depth theoretical study of two nonlinear circuits capable of transient thermal energy harvesting at one temperature. The first circuit has a storage capacitor and diode connected in series. The second circuit has three storage capacitors, and two diodes arranged for full wave rectification. The authors solve both Ito-Langevin and Fokker-Planck equations for both circuits using a large parameter space including capacitance values and diode quality. Surprisingly, using diodes one can harvest thermal energy at a single temperature by charging capacitors. However, this is a transient phenomenon. In equilibrium, the capacitor charge is zero, and this solution …

Snow accumulation on solar panels presents a significant challenge to energy generation in snowy regions, reducing the efficiency of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and impacting economic viability. While prior studies have explored snow detection using fixed-camera setups, these methods suffer from scalability limitations, stationary viewpoints, and the need for reference images. This study introduces an automated deep-learning framework that leverages drone-captured imagery to detect and quantify snow coverage on solar panels, aiming to enhance power forecasting and optimize snow removal strategies in winter conditions. We developed and evaluated two approaches using YOLO-based models: Approach 1, a high-precision method utilizing a …

Bi-Level Energy Dispatch Optimisation For Peak Load Shaving In Microgrids With Battery Storage, Mohd Fakhizan Romlie, Abid Ali, Gm Shafiullah
Platform: A Journal of Engineering (PAJE)
Peak load periods in electrical networks result in significant power losses, straining generation capacity, and increasing operational costs. Strategically optimising electricity supply from battery storage-based distributed generation (DG) during these peak times can mitigate these losses and enhance grid efficiency through peak load shaving (PLS). However, electrical loads vary throughout the day and night. Thus, identifying peak and off-peak loads would be the most challenging task to complete before scheduling operations for batteries. This study presents a bi-level energy optimisation framework to identify the peak and off-peak loads and plan the energy dispatching operations for battery storage. The bi-level energy …

Adaptive Control System Of Nonlinear Dynamic Object On The Basis Of Neuro-Fuzzy Networks, Isomiddin Xakimovich Siddikov, Dilnoza Maxamadjanovna Umurzakova
Technical science and innovation
The presented paper is devoted to the development of an adaptive control system for a nonlinear dynamic object using neuro-fuzzy networks. The authors note that in real conditions dynamic objects function under conditions of uncertainty, which are characterised by complex and poorly understood relationships between technological variables, the presence of perturbing and random disturbances, as well as nonlinear elements. This makes it difficult to apply traditional linear adaptive control algorithms. The use of self-organising adaptive control is proposed, in which the mathematical model of the controlled system is formed by operational identification during system operation. It is shown that linear …

Development Of Analytical Dependencies For Determining Kinematic Parameters Of The Drive Of The Working Engine Of The Mixing Machine, N. A. Maksudova
Technical science and innovation
The requirement of any technological process of product preparation is intensive mixing. This ensures uniform distribution of components. At the initial stage of designing planetary mechanisms, special attention is paid to determining the kinematic parameters. The dimensions, weight and design of the mechanism depend on the value of these parameters. The main criterion for assessing the scheme of the planetary mechanism is the kinematic parameters of the gear wheels of the mechanism. The article presents a kinematic scheme of the planetary mechanism of the kneading machine. The principle of rotation of the gear wheels of the planetary mechanism of the …

Development And Analysis Of The Kinematic-Dynamic Model Of The Rehabilitation Exoskeleton System, Umidjon Abdumutalipovich Takabaev, Zafar Botirovich Juraev
Technical science and innovation
Designing modern rehabilitation exoskeleton systems requires a comprehensive study of human-machine interactions. In this process, creating kinematic and dynamic mathematical models of the system is extremely important. In this paper, we develop mathematical models that describe rehabilitation exoskeleton systems' kinematic and dynamic properties. Based on the Denavit-Hartenberg method we construct kinematic model of the exoskeleton system. The method gave us to determine the coordinate system for each joint. Furthermore, we also study the motion range of joints of the exoskeleton. Modeling the dynamic properties of the system performed with the second-order Lagrange equation. The exoskeleton construction consisting of knee, thigh, …

Unavoidable Immersions And Topological Minors Of K-Edge-Connected Graphs, Brittian Qualls
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this work, we present results concerning the unavoidable structures in large and infinite k-edge-connected graphs. These results are inspired by the classical result of Ramsey, who proved that for every positive integer r, every sufficiently large graph contains as an induced subgraph either Kr or $\overline{Kr}$. We consider different graph containment relations, focusing primarily on the immersion relation. In the case of finite graphs, we provide the unavoidable immersions of 4-edge-connected graphs and prove that linear edge-connectivity suffices to immerse the graph Ct,r.
This dissertation also considers infinite graphs. We present the …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Gravitational waves were first predicted by Albert Einstein in 1916. Calculations in the 1970s by Rainer Weiss showed an interferometer of sufficient size could realistically detect gravitational waves, which led to a grant by the National Science Foundation (NSF). With steady progress and over decades of funding by the NSF, the construction of two full scale 4km interferometers was approved and began construction in 1994. This project, coined LIGO the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory, came to be a worldwide collaboration of scientists dedicated to the discovery and study of gravitational waves. In 2015, both LIGO detectors detected a coincident inspiral …

Explaining "U-Shaped" Distributions Of Population Substance Use With A Simple Computational Approach, Jacob T. Borodovsky
Explaining "U-Shaped" Distributions Of Population Substance Use With A Simple Computational Approach, Jacob T. Borodovsky
Dartmouth Scholarship
Background: “U-shaped” distributions of past 30-day substance use frequencies are pervasive, yet no established model explains this phenomenon. Using probability functions to describe these distributions yields unintuitive, atheoretical results. This study introduces a simple computational model of individual-level, longitudinal substance use patterns to understand how cross-sectional U-shaped distributions emerge in populations. Model: Each independent computational object transitions between two states: not using a substance (“N”), or using a substance (“U”). The model has two key components: (1) each object has a unique risk factor probability governing the transition from N to U, and a unique protective factor probability governing the …
Poetic Philosophy And The Moralization Of Social Networks, Finn Janning
Poetic Philosophy And The Moralization Of Social Networks, Finn Janning
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
In this paper, I aim to explore the question, “What distinguishes philosophy in its original sense? ” My intent is not to provide a historical overview of philosophy, but to concentrate on what makes philosophy a liberating practice. I argue that this practice is rooted in its poetic and affirmative way of organizing life. To emphasize this idea, I contrast it with the presumed organization found in social media and networks. While social media and networks encourages commitment by simplifying complexity, they also restrict users' freedom, responsibility, and ability to make meaningful decisions. To support these claims, I examine the …
