Assessment Of Long Time Approximation Equation To Determine Thermal Conductivity Of High Porous Materials With Nss Probe, Hussein Humaish, Bastien Ruet, Laurent Marmoret, Hassen Beji

Journal of Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies

Recent economic changes have increased the focus on energy conservation in buildings. Improve insulation represents one of the biggest challenge to save energy. The TP02 Huksefux® Non Steady State Probe (NSSP) has been used to determine the thermal conductivity of the building insulation materials. Usually, the long term approximation equation (linear form) is applied to determine the thermal conductivity when using hot wire techniques. Long term approximation has been successfully used to characterize glycerol: a fluid which doesn’t present contact resistance and porosity. But, an S-shaped appears for more porous materials. So to generalize the possibility of using this method, …

Charge-To-Mass Ratio Of The Electron, Joseph E. Temple, Zachary D. Jimerson Apr 2025

Charge-To-Mass Ratio Of The Electron, Joseph E. Temple, Zachary D. Jimerson

ATU Scholars Symposium

We measured the charge-to-mass ratio (q/m) of the electron via a method similar to that used by J.J. Thomson in 1897. Our calculated value is q/m = (1.752 +/- 0.046) x 10^11 C/kg, which agrees with the textbook value of 1.759 x 10^11 C/kg within an error of 0.36%. This confirms the viability and accuracy of Thomson's approach for determining the electron's q/m ratio. Observed uncertainties are attributed to variations in the magnetic field within the Helmholtz coil apparatus and fluctuations in current over time.

The Effects Of Climate Change On The Advancement Of West Nile Virus, Mackenzie R. Epperson Apr 2025

An Analysis On The Time Effectiveness Of Speeding While Driving A Vehicle, Joy Skaggs Apr 2025

An Analysis On The Time Effectiveness Of Speeding While Driving A Vehicle, Joy Skaggs

ATU Scholars Symposium

Speeding is responsible for roughly a third of all crashes, often coming at a deadly cost. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports many negative consequences, such as a greater likelihood of loss of vehicle control, reduced protection equipment effectiveness, increased stopping distance, crash severity, and fuel consumption (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, n.d.). Yet despite these costs, drivers continue to speed. In fact, in our fast paced world, speeding is so normalized that it’s uncommon to encounter a driver following the speed limit. Hawaiian psychology professor Leon James explains it best: people have twisted their definitions of speeding to …

Graphfocus: Adaptive Training Strategies To Counter Over- Globalization In Graph Transformers Apr 2025

Graphfocus: Adaptive Training Strategies To Counter Over- Globalization In Graph Transformers

Defensive Publications Series

As Transformers become more popular for graph machine learning, a significant issue has recently been observed. Their global attention mechanisms tend to overemphasize distant vertices, leading to the phenomenon of "over-globalising." This phenomenon often results in the dilution of essential local information, particularly in graphs where local neighbourhoods carry significant predictive power. Existing methods often struggle with rigidity in their local processing, where tightly coupled operations limit flexibility and adaptability in diverse graph structures. Additionally, these methods can overlook critical structural nuances, resulting in an incomplete integration of local and global contexts. This paper addresses these issues by proposing GraphFocus, …

Offline Model-Based Optimization Comprehensive Review

Defensive Publications Series

Offline optimization is a fundamental challenge in science and engineering, where the goal is to optimize black-box functions using only offline datasets. This setting is particularly relevant when querying the objective function is prohibitively expensive or infeasible, with applications spanning protein engineering, material discovery, neural architecture search, and beyond. The main difficulty lies in accurately estimating the objective landscape beyond the available data, where extrapolations are fraught with significant epistemic uncertainty. This uncertainty can lead to objective hacking (reward hacking)—exploiting model inaccuracies in unseen regions—or other spurious optimizations that yield misleadingly high performance estimates outside the training distribution. Recent advances …

Implications Of The Cosmic Calibration Tension Beyond ₀ And The Synergy Between Early- And Late-Time New Physics, V. Poulin, Tristan L. Smith, R. Calderón, T. Simon

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

The cosmic calibration tension is a >5⁢ discrepancy between the cosmological distance ladder built from baryonic acoustic oscillations calibrated by the Planck/Λ cold dark matter (Λ⁢CDM) sound horizon () and type Ia supernovae calibrated instead with the SH0ES absolute magnitude, assuming the distance-duality relationship holds. In this work, we emphasize the consequences of this tension beyond the value of the Hubble constant ₀ and the implications for physics beyond Λ⁢CDM. Of utmost importance, it implies a larger physical matter density ₘ≡Ωₘ⁢ℎ², as both the fractional matter density Ωₘ and ℎ ≡₀⁡/100 km/s/Mpc are well constrained from late-time data. …

The Professional Employer Organization As Dispute System Designer: Mandatory Arbitration In The Co-Employment Context, Ursula Ramsey

University of Miami Business Law Review

A professional employer organization (“PEO”) provides payroll, employment tax, and human resources services to its small to mid-sized business clients. Today, more than 200,000 businesses employing 4.5 million people utilize a PEO’s services. A common PEO strategy is to require co-employees of the PEO and its client companies to agree to mandatory arbitration provisions despite criticism that mandatory employment arbitration lacks public accountability, has lower win rates for employees, and may fail to protect due process. Mandatory arbitration is one method of dispute system design, a term that describes the selection and development of processes by which a company chooses …

Self-Supervised Learning And Its Applications In Medical Image Analysis, Siladittya Manna Apr 2025

Self-Supervised Learning And Its Applications In Medical Image Analysis, Siladittya Manna

Doctoral Theses

Self-supervised learning (SSL) enables learning robust representations from unlabeled data and it consists of two stages: pretext and downstream. The representations learnt in the pretext task are transferred to the downstream task. Self-supervised learning has appli- cations in various domains, such as computer vision tasks, natural language processing, speech and audio processing, etc. In transfer learning scenarios, due to differences in the data distribution of the source and the target data, the hierarchical co-adaptation of the representations is destroyed, and hence proper fine-tuning is required to achieve satisfactory performance. With self-supervised pre-training, it is possible to learn repre- sentations aligned …

For decades, the dominant approach to lead poisoning has been to focus on homes affected by lead paint and to treat children who are already suffering from lead poisoning. This individualizing approach developed in the context of the defunding and deregulation of government agencies in the 1980s. In recent years, however, community–academic partnerships have reframed lead as an environmental issue produced by the development of the lead industry in the twentieth century and connected to overlapping histories of exploitation, discrimination, and inaction. These community-based projects have contributed to shifting research agendas (by emphasizing historical analysis and the study of the …

Software testing verifies that the software is free of defects and meets its requirements. This process includes various levels, one of which is unit testing, where developers create test cases alongside their regular code, and use frameworks, such as JUnit for Java, to enable a frequent automated execution of these test cases. However, designing test cases remains a significant challenge. Graph-based testing offers a solution by representing units in the source code as graphs, with nodes representing basic code blocks and edges representing transitions or interactions between these nodes. Additionally, modern Generative AI (GenAI) models, including ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot, …

One Size Doesn’T Fit All: Towards Design And Evaluation Of Developmentally Appropriate Parental Control Tool, Prakriti Dumaru, Mahdi Nasrullah Al-Ameen

Computer Science Student Research

As children progress through developmental stages, they undergo substantial biological, cognitive, and social changes, creating unique needs for online safety across different age groups (e.g., young children, tweens, teens). The existing parental control tools fail to account for these differences, leaving a notable gap in the literature on parental mediation. To this end, we conducted 10 focus group sessions with a total of 20 parents to understand their preferences for age-appropriate design components that promote self-regulation and open communication, followed by an ideation workshop with four UX design experts to translate these preferences into customized features. We then evaluated these …
