Holla Back: The African American Rhetorical Tradition Of Call And Response And The Montgomery Riverfront Brawl, Solomon Cochren
Holla Back: The African American Rhetorical Tradition Of Call And Response And The Montgomery Riverfront Brawl, Solomon Cochren
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Call and Response is a common production and performance within the African/African American community. Traditionally, it has been synonymous with African/African American preaching/oratory and African/African American music (spirituals, blues, gospel, jazz, soul, and rap). When the discourse of Call and Response is engaged often, it is regulated to these two major contexts. Unfortunately, this is a common and unostentatious understanding of Call and Response in the primary sectors of the African/African American (A/AA) community. The discourse of Call and Response outside of preaching and music within the densely populated African and African American life provides limited discourse of conceptualization and …
Transcranial Ultrasound Investigation Toward Rapid Stroke Detection, Taylor Nickole Christian
Transcranial Ultrasound Investigation Toward Rapid Stroke Detection, Taylor Nickole Christian
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Ischemic strokes entail a blockage of vessels in the brain and account for 87% of all strokes. When these blockages occur in large cerebral arteries, there is a 95% post-stroke mortality rate. Given these statistics, rapid identification and treatment is crucial for positive patient outcomes. Transcranial Doppler (TCD) is a noninvasive ultrasound technique that transmits ultrasonic pulses through the skull to assess arterial flow velocities to determine whether any large vessel occlusions (LVOs) are present. However, identifying both an acoustic window that allows ultrasonic pulses to propagate well and the angle to align the beam with large vessels proves to …

The Engineering Redshirt Program (ERP) was designed to address the challenges first-year engineering students face when starting below Calculus 1. Students who are under prepared in math often struggle as engineering majors, and in turn, experience lower retention and graduation rates. The ERP aims to increase student success by utilizing peer mentors, a summer bridge program, academic support, and social connections during the student's first year of enrollment. The ERP was funded by a grant from the Tennessee Board of Regents. This study examines the implementation and preliminary outcomes of the ERP’s first cohort, which consists of eight students during …
Power-Beaming: Wireless Energy Transfer Using Lasers, Spencer L. Barnett
Power-Beaming: Wireless Energy Transfer Using Lasers, Spencer L. Barnett
ATU Scholars Symposium
The objective of the project is to implement a wireless energy transfer system utilizing laser technology. This system involves modulating the laser’s beam profile and spatial distribution through precise optical manipulation. The energy transmitted by the laser is captured by a photovoltaic array, commonly referred to as a solar panel, which is engineered to convert incident photons into direct current (DC) electrical power. The current challenge is to develop a reliable wireless energy transfer mechanism capable of operating over extended distances, thereby overcoming the constraints imposed by wired connections, particularly in environments where wiring is impractical, such as in space. …
Dual Colorimetric And Fluorometric Detection Of Hydrogen Peroxide In Aqueous Samples, Nathan F. Surles, Kaitlin A. Edwards
Dual Colorimetric And Fluorometric Detection Of Hydrogen Peroxide In Aqueous Samples, Nathan F. Surles, Kaitlin A. Edwards
ATU Scholars Symposium
In this project, a simple, inexpensive colorimetric and fluorometric method for determining hydrogen peroxide in aqueous samples is described. In this method, aryl boronic acid is de-protected to produce a red dye that absorbs and emits in the red/near infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Upon deprotection by the hydrogen peroxide, an intramolecular charge transfer occurs between a strong phenolate donor and a TCF acceptor to produce the strong absorption and bright fluorescence. This allows naked eye detection of hydrogen peroxide within seconds in water under physiological conditions. The detection limit is impressive and falls in the sub-micromolar (µM) range. …
Method For Low-Cost In Situ Measurement Of Dissolved Total Volatile Organic Compound Concentrations In Surface Waters, Teagan A. Jones
Method For Low-Cost In Situ Measurement Of Dissolved Total Volatile Organic Compound Concentrations In Surface Waters, Teagan A. Jones
ATU Scholars Symposium
Increases in volatile organic compounds (VOC) in developing areas poses risks to aquatic health. Water quality changes in surface waters, if measured, are often only for field parameters of pH, specific conductance, water temperature, and major ions, e.g. Ca2+, Mg2+, Na, Cl. Elevated VOC concentrations can negatively impact aquatic ecosystems even at low concentrations, but do not cause changes in commonly measured parameters and may go undetected based on monitoring these common parameters. Traditional sampling and benchtop analysis for VOC can be both time and cost prohibitive. Here we demonstrate the use of a low-cost in situ dissolved total VOC …
Light As A Lasso: The Design And Construction Of An Optical Trap, Joseph E. Temple
Light As A Lasso: The Design And Construction Of An Optical Trap, Joseph E. Temple
ATU Scholars Symposium
The goal of our work is the design and construction of an optical trap, also known as an "optical tweezer," using equipment commonly available to the undergraduate physics laboratory. Such devices allow us to observe and manipulate micron-scale (on the order of one-thousandth of a millimeter) objects in 3-dimensional space using only light.
The system consists primarily of five components: a laser, two mirrors to collimate (make parallel to the optical table) the beam, two lenses forming a beam expander, two more lenses granting control over the trapping plane, and a microscope objective to focus the beam. Thus far we …

Analyzing Quantum Mechanical Properties Of Electrons Via The Anomalous Zeeman Effect To Verify The Bohr Magneton, Gunner W. Hodges, Anthony J. Mclain
ATU Scholars Symposium
At the turn of the 19th century, scientists were gradually realizing that nature did not behave as it had been thought for centuries. Many thought the concrete laws governing nature were soon to be completed. As we now know, their deterministic optimism was far from reality. Electromagnetic theory predicted that the spectral line emissions from a bulb would split into three distinct bands in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. This behavior was proven in what is known as the Normal Zeeman Effect. What was not expected though was the host of extraneous bands that accompanied the predicted triplet …

Enabling Localized Execution Of Smart Contracts Via Distributed Event Beacons, Rakesh Vasa, Sky P. Waterpeace, Nick Ivanov
Enabling Localized Execution Of Smart Contracts Via Distributed Event Beacons, Rakesh Vasa, Sky P. Waterpeace, Nick Ivanov
STEM Student Research Symposium Posters
Modern smart contracts save their state transitions on a distributed ledger, such as blockchain [3, 4] or a particularly configured cloud [1]. These approaches necessitate storage and synchronization of large amounts of distributed data, leading to scalability deficiencies in decentralized permissionless smart contract platforms. In this poster, we introduce a novel concept of local execution of smart contracts which only required synchronizing the transaction data between the members of the private channel, without the need to storing state transitions on the distributed storage. To achieve this, we design a distributed storage-free decentralized beacon network that allows to perform provenance signatures …
Generating More Equitable Fair Use, Jacqueline Kessel
Generating More Equitable Fair Use, Jacqueline Kessel
Pepperdine Law Review
From advancing healthcare and education to threatening democratic systems, generative artificial intelligence (AI) has demonstrated a capacity to positively and negatively impact society. And these benefits and consequences are not shared equitably. Copyright law, however, stands as a powerful mechanism in monitoring AI system development. Several complaints have charged generative AI system developers with copyright infringement, alleging that (1) ingesting copyrighted works as training data infringes the copyright owner’s exclusive right to reproduce works in copies and (2) generating AI outputs infringes the exclusive right to prepare derivative works because the outputs are based upon the works on which the …

An Architectural Query Of Anthropocene Era: Planned Obsolescence, H.Gül Aydın, Emel Birer
Journal of Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies
After Modernity, the human has become the subject, and the world redefined by the human has turned into a painting. However, the efforts of human subjectivity to reveal the world in the Anthropocene Era, with negative practices such as the “planned obsolescence theory,” which is the research subject, even prepares for the end of its existence. According to the research hypothesis evaluated through the theory’s effect on architectural problems, “secular- ization should take place against planned obsolete architecture.” The research aims to show that positive feedback can be provided in society and ecology by reversing architectural consump- tion. It is …
