Identification Of Subtypes Of Post-Stroke And Neurotypical Gait Behaviors Using Neural Network Analysis Of Gait Cycle Kinematics, Andrian Kuch, Nicolas Schweighofer, James M. Finley, Alison Mckenzie, Yuxin Wen, Natalia Sánchez

Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research

Gait impairment post-stroke is highly heterogeneous. Prior studies classified heterogeneous gait patterns into subgroups using peak kinematics, kinetics, or spatiotemporal variables. A limitation of this approach is the need to select discrete features in the gait cycle. Using continuous gait cycle data, we accounted for differences in magnitude and timing of kinematics. Here, we propose a machine-learning pipeline combining supervised and unsupervised learning. We first trained a Convolutional Neural Network and a Temporal Convolutional Network to extract features that distinguish impaired from neurotypical gait. Then, we used unsupervised time-series k-means and Gaussian Mixture Models to identify gait clusters. We tested …

Growing Through Simulated Realities: Proxy-Tuning Llms With Embodied Multi-Task Planning, Sirui Wang May 2025

Growing Through Simulated Realities: Proxy-Tuning Llms With Embodied Multi-Task Planning, Sirui Wang

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

This thesis presents a method for teaching large language models (LLMs) to perform embodied multi-task planning using simulation data and a lightweight training technique called proxy-tuning. Traditional LLMs are strong in language understanding but struggle with tasks that require reasoning and planning in real-world environments. To address this, we construct a dataset based on VirtualHome, a simulator that models household activities using input commands. We extract individual tasks from the simulator and combine them into multi-task plans, optimizing for coherence and efficiency. These plans are formatted as Q&A pairs to train models to generate step-by-step instructions that complete multiple tasks …

Magic: The Gathering Deck Testing And Optimization, Ian B. Watson

Honors Theses

The goal of this project is to provide a tool for players of the trading card game Magic: the Gathering to determine whether or not a given deck is optimally built by outputting relevant information regarding its optimality. This is done through a simulator that plays a one-sided game, recording what cards are played, what turn they are played, and how much mana is left over at the end of every turn. The simulator was tested with both optimized and unoptimized decks to show how it can be used to diagnose both.

X-Ray Polarization Of Accreting Stellar-Mass Black Holes Through Accretion States, Nicole Rodriguez Cavero

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, X-ray polarization has opened up a new window into our understanding of astrophysical sources. Among them are accreting stellar-mass black holes, which play a key role in testing the behavior of matter in extreme gravitational environments. These sources can be observed in different states of the accretion cycle, predominantly in the soft and hard states. Every state is dominated by a combination of thermal disk, coronal, or reflected emission—each type containing different information about the environment around the black hole that can be understood through polarization. Polarimeters such as the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer and XL-Calibur allow …

Hippocampal-Prefrontal Functional Neural Networks In A Rat Model Of Fragile X Syndrome Are Poorly Organized With Limited Resiliency, Mohamed Ouardouz, Patrick Jasinski, Mohamed Khalife, J. Matthew Mahoney, Amanda E. Hernan, Rod C. Scott

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) is a common cause of autism spectrum symptoms. The genetic mutation results in multiple molecular alterations that are hypothesized to negatively impact neural circuit development although the nature of any functional neural dynamic consequences remain unclear. Therefore, the characteristics of hippocampal-prefrontal (H-PFC) network dysfunction were investigated in a rat model of FXS. FMR-KO and control rats underwent behavioral tests assessing sociability, memory, and anxiety to validate and replicate previously recognized deficits. Single-unit electrophysiology in the H-PFC circuit during exploration was used to measure patterns of action potential firing that were then compared between groups using generalized …

Law Of Rebuttable Presumptions In Maine, Curtis L. Bourdon May 2025

Law Of Rebuttable Presumptions In Maine, Curtis L. Bourdon

Maine Law Review

In Hinds v. John Hancock Mut. Life Ins. Co., the Maine Supreme Judicial Court sought to clarify and simplify the law of rebuttable presumptions as to the quantum of evidence that must be introduced before a presumption is dispelled. The Maine court adopted a rule which states that a presumption is rebutted when the probability of the nonexistence of the presumed fact is as probable as its existence. Stated another way, a presumption is rebutted when the jurors' minds are placed in equilibrium. Ten years later, in State v. O'Clair, the court expressly incorporated the Hinds rule into criminal procedure. …

A State Approach To Effluent Charge, Orlando E. Delogu

Maine Law Review

Although the concept of effluent charge as a means of dealing with water pollution has been widely discussed in this country for more than a decade and widely used with documented success in parts of Europe for over fifty years, there is a surprising lack of specific material on methods of implementation. We are, after all, a complex society with overlaying levels of government and close working relationships between the public and private sectors of the economy. Furthermore, the statutory, constitutional, and institutional framework of the federal government and that of each state government are different in varying degree from …

Comparative Negligence And Comparative Contribution In Maine: The Need For Guidelines, Maine Law Review May 2025

Comparative Negligence And Comparative Contribution In Maine: The Need For Guidelines, Maine Law Review

Maine Law Review

In the recent case of Packard v. Whitten, Maine became the second state to adopt the doctrine of comparative contribution among joint tortfeasors. The decision stressed the point that comparative contribution was merely a logical outgrowth of Maine's Comparative Negligence Statute and that, in particular, the 1969 amendment to that law "would appear to have little purpose except to lay the basis for a comparative contribution." The court concluded that the implementation of this new doctrine would pose no major problems: "More than five years' experience in apportioning causal fault under our Comparative Negligence Law convinces us that this change …

Performance Of Lasso And Ridge Regression For Variable Selection In Genome-Wide Association Studies Of Maize Flowering Time, Dipok Deb May 2025

Performance Of Lasso And Ridge Regression For Variable Selection In Genome-Wide Association Studies Of Maize Flowering Time, Dipok Deb

Data Science and Data Mining

Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) are instrumental in identifying genetic variants linked to complex traits, providing valuable insights into trait heritability and biological mechanisms. This study applies GWAS to investigate flowering time in maize, a critical adaptive trait, using a diverse dataset of 5,000 recombinant inbred lines across eight environments. Traditional GWAS methods often encounter challenges in high-dimensional datasets due to the presence of multiple small-effect genetic loci. To address this, we compared two penalized regression methods—LASSO and Ridge regression—to perform variable selection and regression analysis within a GWAS framework. LASSO effectively reduced the number of predictors by selecting the most …

Graduated Responsibility As An Alternative To Current Tests Of Determining Criminal Capacity, Maine Law Review May 2025

Graduated Responsibility As An Alternative To Current Tests Of Determining Criminal Capacity, Maine Law Review

Maine Law Review

When a person breaks the law, inquiry may be made into why he acted in an illegal manner and, if he satisfies the relevant test of criminal exculpation, he will be held blameless under the law. Although a range of explanations of behavior is possible, when examining criminal responsibility, the law is concerned only with those excuses which bear on moral culpability. This comment suggests an alternative to the absolutist notion that the defendant is either completely responsible or completely irresponsible for his unlawful act. It is contended that cognitive and volitive capacities exist by degrees and that a fairer, …

Female Embodiment And Corporeality In Sanskrit Prognostication: A Study Of The Bṛhatpārāśarahorā Śāstra, Tara Sheemar May 2025

Female Embodiment And Corporeality In Sanskrit Prognostication: A Study Of The Bṛhatpārāśarahorā Śāstra, Tara Sheemar

Journal of International Women's Studies

The connection between traditional Indian knowledge systems of astrology, medicine, and drama has been noted by scholars. Of particular concern for gender analysis is the reading of lakṣaṇas (bodily marks) that developed in astrology. The coded knowledge of astrology—the sharing of fundamental meanings with other Sanskrit knowledge systems—became a significant tool for gendered prognostication, which buttressed normative gender roles for men and women. In this paper, I attempt to unravel the code of lakṣaṇas given in the Bṛhatpārāśarahorā Śāstra, a text composed between the 7th and 9th centuries CE. The focus will be on the sections of the text …
