The Effect Of Various Bulbous Bow Forms On The Resistance Of A Black Sea Type Fishing Boat, Dursun Saral

Seatific Journal

In this study, resistance analyses of a 35-meter-long Black Sea Type Fishing Boat with various bow forms were conducted using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The boat's bow shapes included a normal bow without a bulb, a special bulb, a special-elliptical bulb, and an elliptical bulb. To determine the resistance values of these forms, the Realizable k-ε model was chosen as the turbulence model, and the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method was applied. Resistance analyses were performed at five different speeds (5.5, 7.5, 9.5, 11.5, and 13.5 knots), within the Fn range of 0.15 to 0.40. Shear, pressure, and total resistance …

Correlation Of The Ship Speed And Carbon Dioxide Emissions: A Study On Panamax Tankers, Levent Bilgili, Volkan Şahin

Seatific Journal

The amount of energy needed by the maritime industry is increasing depending on the global energy demand and the increase in commercial activities. Larger ships are expected to create greater challenges in the energy demand and environmental performance issues. Therefore, estimating fuel consumption and emissions are important preliminary steps to avoid these problems. In this study, the relationship between speed and CO2 emissions is reduced to a single equation. It aims to reach fuel consumption and emission amounts by using only speed input. Since the speed input includes RPM, weather and sea conditions, cargo quantity and wave course data, the …

A Domestic Waste Heat Recovery System: Mathematical Model Of A Green Kitchen Module, Stefano Maria Spagocci May 2025

A Domestic Waste Heat Recovery System: Mathematical Model Of A Green Kitchen Module, Stefano Maria Spagocci

Seatific Journal

A lumped parameter model of a domestic heat storage/recovery system is described. This is a typical green kitchen application, where the heat dissipated by kitchen appliances is stored in suitable materials by temperature rise and/or phase transitions. To this aim, sensible heat materials and phase change materials are considered. Based on the model, a number of design solutions are proposed, making use of fixed beds or shell-and-tube heat exchangers, where heat is stored in spheres or cylinders made up of (or encapsulating) suitable materials. The best solution (a PCM-based shell-and-tube exchanger) corresponds to ~50×50×25 cm, ~30 kg modules.

Taper Ratio Influence On The Performance Of 3-D Cavitating Hydrofoils Moving Under Free Surface, Şakir Bal May 2025

Taper Ratio Influence On The Performance Of 3-D Cavitating Hydrofoils Moving Under Free Surface, Şakir Bal

Seatific Journal

Taper ratio influence on the performance of three-dimensional (3-D) cavitating hydrofoils moving steadily under a free water surface has been investigated numerically. An iterative boundary element method (IBEM) developed before has been modified and extended to solve this problem. The fluid is assumed to be inviscid, incompressible and the flow irrotational. All variables and equations are made non-dimensional to achieve a consistent numerical scheme and a very quick convergence. The IBEM solves the hydrofoil problem and free surface problem separately with the effects of each other via their potential values in an iterative way. Both the 3-D hydrofoil surface and …

Maximum Entropy Production And Constructal Law: Variable Conductance And Branched Flow, Phillip Johnson May 2025

Maximum Entropy Production And Constructal Law: Variable Conductance And Branched Flow, Phillip Johnson

Seatific Journal

Within the scope of modern thermodynamics, several new principles have been advanced. Yet a coherent picture has not yet fully emerged beyond classical thermodynamics, in part because of the disparate nature of these principles. This work analyzes two such principles, that of maximum entropy production and also the constructal law. These ideas are compared in two examples scenarios, atmospheric convection and riverbed generation. It is shown that both ideas utilized a flow network with variable conductivity, particularly that of a branched system. Comparison is made to show underlying shared principles.

The Dynamics Of Human Society Evolution: An Energetics Approach, Ram Chandra Poudel, Jon G. Mcgowan

Seatific Journal

Human society is an open system that evolves by coupling with various known and unknown (energy) fluxes. How do these dynamics unfold precisely? Energetics may provide further insights. We expand on Navier-Stokes’ approach to study non-equilibrium dynamics in a field that evolves over time. Based on social fi eld th eory, an induction of th e cl assical fie ld theories, we define social force, social energy, and the Hamiltonian of an individual in society. The equations for the evolution of an individual and society are sketched out based on the time-dependent Hamiltonian that includes power dynamics. We demonstrate in …

Computational Prediction Of Hydrodynamic Coefficients For Heave Motion, Ferdi Çakıcı, Emre Kahramanoğlu, Süleyman Duman, Ahmet Dursun Alkan

Seatific Journal

In this study, the hydrodynamic coefficients associated with heave motion are obtained by using unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) approach. The well-known Wigley hull is selected for the calculations of uncoupled added mass and damping coefficients (A33, B33) in deep water. Numerical simulations are performed for six different oscillation frequencies at the Froude number 0.3. First, the 3D ship model is forced in the heave direction with certain frequencies and then the hydrodynamic coefficients are computed with the help of Fourier series expansion. Numerical results are compared with those obtained by the experiments and strip theory. The verification and validation study …

Bayesian Statistics: Origins And Applications, Evelyn Pulla May 2025

Bayesian Statistics: Origins And Applications, Evelyn Pulla

Publications and Research

Bayesian Statistics applies Bayes' Theorem to update beliefs through new evidence. In this project, I explored how Bayesian Statistics applies into real supporting decision-making under uncertainty. By solving problems using data, I was able to realize how prior knowledge and evidence collaborate to make better conclusions. The project also demonstrates how Bayesian reasoning corrects our intuition to make decisions based on logical reasoning. Through this project, I was able to learn why using probability to make informed decisions matters both in science and real life.

Application Of Bioactive Materials Primary Cilia As A Novel Delivery Vehicle, Ayan K. Barui, Farideh Amirrad, Vansh Goel, Sharareh Ohadi, Rajasekharreddy Pala, Ashraf M. Mohieldin, Andromeda M. Nauli, Surya M. Nauli

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Primary cilia are hair-like structured cell organelles functioning as cellular antennae with chemosensory and mechanosensory roles. Dysfunction of cilia results in ciliopathies, including renovascular diseases (polycystic kidneys, hypertension, aneurysm), mental impedances (Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, dementia), metabolic diseases (obesity, developmental skeleton defects), blindness, and so on. With a diameter of 150 nm, cilia can be cleaved, released and circulated in the body as injury biomarkers. We here assessed the potential use of isolated cilia as a novel delivery vehicle. Cilia were isolated from renal epithelial cells, and a specific-targeting chemotherapeutic was designed on the cilia. The data show a remarkable …

Existence Of Traveling Waves In A Predator-Prey Invasion Model With Nonlocal Dispersal And Delayed Effects In Dispersal, Austin Simms May 2025

Existence Of Traveling Waves In A Predator-Prey Invasion Model With Nonlocal Dispersal And Delayed Effects In Dispersal, Austin Simms

Theses and Dissertations

We investigate the existence and stability of traveling wave solutions in a predator--prey population model that incorporates both nonlocal dispersal and time-delayed interactions. The problem arises when species distributions and feeding or reproduction processes do not respond instantaneously, but rather exhibit lags in space and time. Our aim is to understand how these delays and nonlocal effects impact the wavefront speed and the eventual establishment of a predator population in previously prey-dominated regions. To accomplish this, we derive a PDE--integro--delay system from ecological considerations of prey self-regulation, predator ratio dependence, and jump-type dispersal kernels. We then employ a traveling wave …

Therefore, this research sought to provide a resource to help secondary mathematics teachers integrate age-appropriate musical applications to their mathematics lessons which connects standards of mathematics into standards of music. Specifically, the paper connects the Ohio Standards of Mathematics for Geometry with the course objectives …

High-Quality Factor Phase Gradient Metasurfaces With Dynamic Reconfigurability, Lin Lin May 2025

High-Quality Factor Phase Gradient Metasurfaces With Dynamic Reconfigurability, Lin Lin

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Free-space optical communication holds immense potential for surpassing the bandwidth limitations of conventional physically defined channels. Achieving flexible and efficient communication in free space requires compact, robust optical components capable of dynamically tuning laser light without relying on bulky lenses or mechanically driven mirrors. Metasurfaces, or flat optics, have garnered significant attention due to their densely arranged subwavelength nano-resonators, which impart phase, amplitude, and polarization changes comparable to those of traditional bulky optics. However, conventional phase gradient metasurfaces are constrained by passive designs based on geometric configurations and the weak light-matter interaction inherent in most dielectric materials, limiting their applicability …

Expanding The Druggable Proteome By Integrating Deep Learning With Molecular Simulations To Predict Cryptic Pockets, Artur Meller May 2025

Expanding The Druggable Proteome By Integrating Deep Learning With Molecular Simulations To Predict Cryptic Pockets, Artur Meller

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Of the protein structures deposited in the Protein Data Bank, less than half have pockets suitable for the binding of drugs. Even when proteins contain pockets in their ground state structures (e.g., the nucleotide-binding active site in myosin motors), achieving specificity remains a central challenge in drug design as many protein families share common structural motifs. Cryptic pockets are cavities absent in ligand-free experimental structures that form due to protein fluctuations in solution. They provide a means to specifically target proteins currently considered undruggable. While cryptic pockets are alluring drug targets, it remains difficult to predict which proteins will form …

Simplicity From Complexity: Sensing High-Dimensional Fluctuations Via Regulatory Network, Optimality In Allocating Cellular Resources, And Recovering Functional Groups Via Data-Driven Methods, Fang Yu May 2025

Simplicity From Complexity: Sensing High-Dimensional Fluctuations Via Regulatory Network, Optimality In Allocating Cellular Resources, And Recovering Functional Groups Via Data-Driven Methods, Fang Yu

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Biological systems must navigate dynamic and complex environments while operating under constraints such as limited molecular resources, biochemical noise, and structural trade-offs. This dissertation investigates three distinct cases in which biological systems allocate resources and process information efficiently, revealing emergent simplicity from underlying complexity. The first study develops a generalized end-product inhibition model with cross-talk and an excess of regulators, providing a proof-of-principle that simple biochemical circuits could, in principle, dynamically adjust their responsiveness to high-dimensional environmental variation. This result highlights how such circuits may allow adaptive filtering of both dominant and subdominant fluctuation modes. The second study, conducted in …

An Intervention To Empower People To Confront Sexism, Rebecca Grace Drake May 2025

An Intervention To Empower People To Confront Sexism, Rebecca Grace Drake

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Even though sexist comments and behavior occur frequently in everyday life, people do not often confront the individuals who are responsible. However, interpersonal bias confrontations can be powerful tools for reducing expressions of bias and norm setting. The current studies tested an intervention designed to increase confrontations by harnessing theory and research on what holds people back from confronting. We designed a half-hour intervention consisting of engaging and evidence-based videos on confronting bias and self-reflection exercises to increase personal relevance. The module aimed to boost confronting by intervening at multiple points of the decision-making process by increasing recognition of sexism, …

Topological And Optical Properties Of Two-Dimensional Materials, Haonan Wang May 2025

Topological And Optical Properties Of Two-Dimensional Materials, Haonan Wang

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Recent advances in condensed matter physics have revealed a wide range of novel quantum phenomena in two-dimensional (2D) materials. The discovery of unique topological, magnetic, and optical properties in solids has greatly expanded our understanding of quantum phases in electronic structures. As more material systems are proposed theoretically and realized experimentally, our research focuses on uncovering and explaining these phenomena through effective models and first-principles calculations. First, we explore topological mosaic patterns in moiré superlattices—structures composed of periodic, spatially distinct domains, each with different topological properties. These domains give rise to periodic edge states along domain walls. We explore the …

California Red Hummingbird Flowers: Color Convergence Across Four Biochemical Categories, Melissa León-Osper, Victor Rossi, Katie Conrad, Josephine Hernandez Mena, Elaine Meslow, Amelia A. Fuller, Eduardo Narbona, Justen B. Whittall May 2025

California Red Hummingbird Flowers: Color Convergence Across Four Biochemical Categories, Melissa León-Osper, Victor Rossi, Katie Conrad, Josephine Hernandez Mena, Elaine Meslow, Amelia A. Fuller, Eduardo Narbona, Justen B. Whittall

Chemistry and Biochemistry

There are 129 red-flowered species in western North America that fit the hummingbird pollination syndrome. Theory predicts that these flowers should produce a specific red color that is conspicuous to hummingbirds but not to bees. In a few well-studied cases, red flowers can be produced with pelargonidin, cyanidin, or both—sometimes complemented with the addition of yellow carotenoids and sometimes not. Which pigment combinations are most common in California and whether they affect conspicuousness to hummingbirds and bees remain unknown. To determine the taxonomic distribution of the pigments responsible for red hummingbird-pollinated flowers, we quantified the color of 36 red-flowered species …
