Arithmetic Local Constants For Abelian Varieties With Extra Endomorphisms, Sunil Chetty Jan 2016

Arithmetic Local Constants For Abelian Varieties With Extra Endomorphisms, Sunil Chetty

Mathematics Faculty Publications

This work generalizes the theory of arithmetic local constants, introduced by Mazur and Rubin, to better address abelian varieties with a larger endomorphism ring than ℤ. We then study the growth of the p∞- Selmer rank of our abelian variety, and we address the problem of extending the results of Mazur and Rubin to dihedral towers k ⊂ K ⊂ F in which [F : K] is not a p-power extension.

Energy Tracking Diagrams, Rachel Scherr, Benedikt Harrer, Hunter Close, Abigail Daane, Lezlie Dewater, Amy Robertson, Lane Seeley, Stamatis Vokos

Faculty Publications

Energy is a crosscutting concept in science and features prominently in national science education documents. In the Next Generation Science Standards, the primary conceptual learning goal is for learners to conserve energy as they track the transfers and transformations of energy within, into, or out of the system of interest in complex physical processes. As part of tracking energy transfers among objects, learners should (i) distinguish energy from matter, including recognizing that energy flow does not uniformly align with the movement of matter, and should (ii) identify specific mechanisms by which energy is transferred among objects, such as mechanical work …

A Short Empirical Note On State Misery Indexes, Ryan Murphy Jan 2016

A Short Empirical Note On State Misery Indexes, Ryan Murphy

Bridwell Institute for Economic Freedom Research

This paper constructs state level Misery Indexes, incorporating recent data on Regional Pricing Parities. As an application, it draws the Phillips curve derived from a panel of fifty states plus the District of Columbia in the years 2008-2011. A state level Misery Index will allow economists and the public to evaluate the overall macroeconomic picture of a regional economy, just as the Misery Index currently allows in the national and international context.

Consistency And Change: Becoming A Literacy Leader In An Urban School, Jackie Marshall Arnold, Mary-Kate Sableski

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

An effective urban literacy teacher is one who can weather the storm of change. Remaining committed to one’s students despite the challenges that an urban environment brings is a key element in facilitating student literacy improvement. In this article we present a case study of one teacher who participated in our three year professional development initiative to improve literacy practices in urban schools. We discuss the qualities that she possessed that helped her to persist through the pains of change to impact student learning, and how these qualities should be fostered in urban school teachers to improve achievement.

Sphere Representations, Stacked Polytopes, And The Colin De Verdière Number Of A Graph, Lon Mitchell, Lynne Yengulalp Jan 2016

Sphere Representations, Stacked Polytopes, And The Colin De Verdière Number Of A Graph, Lon Mitchell, Lynne Yengulalp

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We prove that a k-tree can be viewed as a subgraph of a special type of (k + 1)- tree that corresponds to a stacked polytope and that these “stacked” (k + 1)-trees admit representations by orthogonal spheres in R k+1. As a result, we derive lower bounds for Colin de Verdi`ere’s µ of complements of partial k-trees and prove that µ(G) + µ(G) > |G| − 2 for all chordal G.

Disparities In Survival With Bystander Cpr Following Cardiopulmonary Arrest Based On Neighborhood Characteristics, Nina Thakkar Rivera, Shari L. Kumar, Rohit K. Bhandari, Sunil D. Kumar

Emergency Medicine Faculty Publications

The American Heart Association reports the annual incidence of out-of-hospital cardiopulmonary arrests (OHCA) is greater than 300,000 with a survival rate of 9.5%. Bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) saves one life for every 30, with a 10% decrease in survival associated with every minute of delay in CPR initiation. Bystander CPR and training vary widely by region. We conducted a retrospective study of 320 persons who suffered OHCA in South Florida over 25 months. Increased survival, overall and with bystander CPR, was seen with increasing income (p = 0.05), with a stronger disparity between low- and high-income neighborhoods (p …

Mechanisms Of Small Molecule-Dna Interactions Probed By Single-Molecule Force Spectroscopy, Ali A. Almaqwashi, Thayaparan Paramanathan, Ioulia Rouzina, Mark C. Williams

Physics Faculty Publications

There is a wide range of applications for non-covalent DNA binding ligands, and optimization of such interactions requires detailed understanding of the binding mechanisms. One important class of these ligands is that of intercalators, which bind DNA by inserting aromatic moieties between adjacent DNA base pairs. Characterizing the dynamic and equilibrium aspects of DNA-intercalator complex assembly may allow optimization of DNA binding for specific functions. Single-molecule force spectroscopy studies have recently revealed new details about the molecular mechanisms governing DNA intercalation. These studies can provide the binding kinetics and affinity as well as determining the magnitude of the double helix …

Export To Arduino: A Tool To Teach Processor Design On Real Hardware, Michael Black

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Many computer organization courses teach digital design and processor architecture without a hardware lab or physical equipment. This paper introduces a module to allow students to export digital designs as C programs that run on an inexpensive Arduino Uno, thereby allowing students to test and observe their designs in actual hardware with minimal setup time and equipment. The module runs within Emumaker86, an open-source digital design tool previously developed by the author for teaching microprocessor architecture, and can handle designs ranging from simple combinational circuits to a complete processor. Students were given this module in an undergraduate "Systems Computing" course, …

Connecting Political Communication With Urban Politics: A Bourdieusian Framework, Yongjun Shin Jan 2016

Connecting Political Communication With Urban Politics: A Bourdieusian Framework, Yongjun Shin

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

In this article, I connect political communication with urban politics by conceptualizing an interdisciplinary urban politics research framework. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s theories of practice and communication, I offer an urban politics research model that simultaneously addresses the dimensions of power struggle and symbolic struggle in urban politics. The theoretical modeling is discussed from an interdisciplinary approach to social studies and constructed with a methodological suggestion of tripartite social network analysis.

Serre Weights And Wild Ramification In Two-Dimensional Galois Representations, Lassina Dembélé, Fred Diamond, David P. Roberts Jan 2016

Serre Weights And Wild Ramification In Two-Dimensional Galois Representations, Lassina Dembélé, Fred Diamond, David P. Roberts

Mathematics Publications

A generalization of Serre’s Conjecture asserts that if F is a totally real field, then certain characteristic p representations of Galois groups over F arise from Hilbert modular forms. Moreover, it predicts the set of weights of such forms in terms of the local behaviour of the Galois representation at primes over p. This characterization of the weights, which is formulated using p-adic Hodge theory, is known under mild technical hypotheses if p > 2. In this paper we give, under the assumption that p is unramified in F, a conjectural alternative description for the set of weights. …
