A Qualitative Analysis Of Service Delivery Of Potable Water Through Cooperatives: The Case Of Talaga Barangay Water Service Cooperative, Philippines, Arminga B. Oeria

Journal of Economics, Management and Agricultural Development

This paper aims to demonstrate the important role of cooperatives in the provision and delivery of potable water to a community of households based on evidence from a case study of Talaga Barangay Water Service Cooperative (TBWSC) in Tanauan, Batangas. TBWSC is a water service type of cooperative that successfully provides its members with access to potable water. The case shows how social capital works in addressing a common need. Particularly, it presents the collaborative partnership between the government and the cooperative in implementing a waterworks project. The factors contributing to the success of water service delivery are the felt …

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

During a NOAA-OER funded research cruise, novel collecting techniques were used to collect live, deep-sea benthic animals for studies of bioluminescence and vision. True color images and emission spectra of bioluminescence were obtained from a number of species, including the spiral octocoral Iridogorgia sp., the sea fan Chrysogorgia sp., the sea pen Umbellula sp., and the caridean shrimp Heterocarpusoryx. Electrophysiological studies were conducted on 3 species of decapod crustaceans collected with methods that limited light damage to their photoreceptors. The caridean shrimp, Bathypalaemonella, collected from 1920m, was always found in association with the bioluminescent spiral octocoral Iridogorgia. While …

First-Principles Definition And Measurement Of Planetary Electromagnetic-Energy Budget, Michael I. Mishchenko, James A. Lock, Andrew A. Lacis, Larry D. Travis, Brian Cairns

Physics Faculty Publications

The imperative to quantify the Earths electromagnetic-energy budget with an extremely high accuracy has been widely recognized but has never been formulated in the framework of fundamental physics. In this paper we give a first-principles definition of the planetary electromagnetic-energy budget using the Poynting- vector formalism and discuss how it can, in principle, be measured. Our derivation is based on an absolute minimum of theoretical assumptions, is free of outdated notions of phenomenological radiometry, and naturally leads to the conceptual formulation of an instrument called the double hemispherical cavity radiometer (DHCR). The practical measurement of the planetary energy budget would …

Decomposition Of Finite Schmidt Rank Bounded Operators On The Tensor Product Of Separable Hilbert Spaces, Abdelkrim Bourouihiya Jan 2016

Decomposition Of Finite Schmidt Rank Bounded Operators On The Tensor Product Of Separable Hilbert Spaces, Abdelkrim Bourouihiya

Mathematics Faculty Articles

Inverse formulas for the tensor product are used to develop an algorithm to compute Schmidt decompositions of Finite Schmidt Rank (FSR) bounded operators on the tensor product of separable Hilbert spaces. The algorithm is then applied to solve inverse problems related to the tensor product of bounded operators. In particular, we show how properties of a FSR bounded operator are reflected by the operators involved in its Schmidt decomposition. These properties include compactness of FSR bounded operators and convergence of sequences whose terms are FSR bounded operators.

Using Data Analytics To Further Understand The Role That Boredom, Loneliness, Social Anxiety, Social Gratification, And Social Relationships (Brag) Play In A Driver’S Decision To Text, Nathan White, Yair Levy, Steven R. Terrell, Steve Bronsburg

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

Texting while driving is a growing problem that current efforts have failed to curtail. This behavior has serious, and sometimes fatal, consequences, and the factors that cause a driver to text are not well understood. This study investigates the influence that boredom, social relationships, social anxiety, and social gratification (BRAG) have upon the texting driver. A survey instrument was used to collect data from 297 respondents at a mid-sized regional university in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. The data was evaluated with PLS-SEM, which indicated that social gratification plays a very significant role in a driver’s decision to …

Course-based research experiences (CREs) are powerful strategies for spreading learning and improving persistence for all students, both science majors and nonscience majors. Here we address the crucial components of CREs (context, discovery, ownership, iteration, communication, presentation) found across a broad range of such courses at a variety of academic institutions. We also address how the design of a CRE should vary according to the background of student participants; no single CRE format is perfect. We provide a framework for implementing CREs across multiple institutional types and several disciplines throughout the typical four years of undergraduate work, designed to a variety …

Energy-Conserving Numerical Scheme For The Poisson-Nerst-Plank Equations, Julienne Kabre Jan 2016

Energy-Conserving Numerical Scheme For The Poisson-Nerst-Plank Equations, Julienne Kabre

Mathematics Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

Preliminary report.
The Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations are a system of nonlinear partial differential equations that describe flow of charged particles in solution. In particular, we are interested in the transport of ions in the biological membrane proteins (ion channels). This work is about the design of numerical schemes that preserve exactly (up to roundoff error) a discretized form of the energy dynamics of the system. We will present a scheme that achieves the goal of preserving the energy dissipation law and some preliminary numerical results.

Model Based Security Testing For Autonomous Vehicles, Seana Lisa Hagerman Jan 2016

Model Based Security Testing For Autonomous Vehicles, Seana Lisa Hagerman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to introduce a novel approach to generate a security test suite to mitigate malicious attacks on an autonomous system. Our method uses model based testing (MBT) methods to model system behavior, attacks and mitigations as independent threads in an execution stream. The threads intersect at a rendezvous or attack point. We build a security test suite from a behavioral model, an attack type and a mitigation model using communicating extended finite state machine (CEFSM) models. We also define an applicability matrix to determine which attacks are possible with which states. Our method then builds …

Peccit: An Omniscient Debugger For Web Development, Zachary Ryan Azar Jan 2016

Peccit: An Omniscient Debugger For Web Development, Zachary Ryan Azar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Debugging can be an extremely expensive and time-consuming task for a software developer. To find a bug, the developer typically needs to navigate backwards through infected states and symptoms of the bug to find the initial defect. Modern debugging tools are not designed for navigating back-in-time and typically require the user to jump through hoops by setting breakpoints, re-executing, and guessing where errors occur. Omniscient debuggers offer back-in-time debugging capabilities to make this task easier. These debuggers trace the program allowing the user to navigate forwards and backwards through the execution, examine variable histories, and visualize program data and control …

Photoassisted Generation Of Complex N, O, S Polyheterocycles, Weston James Umstead Jan 2016

Photoassisted Generation Of Complex N, O, S Polyheterocycles, Weston James Umstead

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research set out to continue the exploration and diversification of excited state o-azaxylylene cycloadditions, utilizing both pre-photochemical and post-photochemical modifications.

Pre-photochemical modifications came through the addition of heteroatoms, namely nitrogen and oxygen, to the tether that links the unsaturated photopendant to the photogenerated o-azaxylylene. Photochemistry resulted in the formation of new, interesting N, O, S polyheterocycles.

Post-photochemical modifications took place through several different cycloaddition reactions, including a [4+2] hetero-Diels Alder reaction, a [4+2] Povarov cyclization, a [3+2] nitrile oxide addition, and a [3+2] nitrone cyclization. These reactions were applied first to a model system, and then to …

Can The Children Of Immigrant Mothers Have Levels Of Health And Achievement As High As Those Of Children Of Mothers In The Host Population? Longitudinal Data From Australia, Julie Robinson Jan 2016

Can The Children Of Immigrant Mothers Have Levels Of Health And Achievement As High As Those Of Children Of Mothers In The Host Population? Longitudinal Data From Australia, Julie Robinson

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The high levels of immigration currently experienced by many Western counties have seen the development and wellbeing of the children of immigrants become an important research issue. However, findings about the developmental trajectories and outcomes for children of immigrants are highly inconsistent. In addition, identifying the factors that predict these outcomes has been hampered by the widespread confounding of parents’ immigration status with other predictors (e.g., mothers’ education, and fluency in the language of the host country). Immigration to Australia offers a context in which the influence of some of these variables can be untangled. Most recent immigrants are highly …

Measuring Urban High School Student Outcomes In A Protein Design Course, James Gillahan Jan 2016

Measuring Urban High School Student Outcomes In A Protein Design Course, James Gillahan

Undergraduate Research Posters 2016

STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) focused high schools have previously shown promising outcomes in the urban districts, where low income students have lower graduation rates, college acceptance and less access to advanced fields of study as compared to students of wealthier school districts. Modeling a protein design course from a private school, we aim to develop curriculum for a biotechnology course for an urban high school. Biotech is an emerging multidisciplinary field that could have similar outcomes to STEM education. We also aim to measure outcomes including student perspective of resulting STEM and career choice, using ethnographic methods.

In eukaryotes, pre-mRNA splicing is important step for gene expression. Splicing is a two-step process which is carried out by a multi-megadalton molecular weight ribonucleoprotein (RNP) machinery called spliceosome. Spliceosome converts pre- mRNA to mRNA by removing non-coding sequence (introns) and splice together coding sequence (exons). Mammalian pre-mRNA are spliced by two different class of spliceosomes which are known as U2- and U12- dependent spliceosomes. U12 dependent spliceosome is composed of five small nuclear RNAs (snRNA). As compared to U2-dependent spliceosome, there is very less known about the catalytic process of U12-dependent splicing. U6atac and U12 snRNA are central to …

Since its discovery over 100 years ago, malaria has been the most important parasitic disease in the world. Malaria affects about 300 to 500 million people every year; killing 5 million people every year. The most virulent causative agent in humans is Plasmodium falciparum; it is an important member of the phylum Apicomplexa, which also includes Toxoplasma gondii. These organisms contain specialized, unique structures, including rhoptry organelles. In Plasmodium and Toxoplasma gondii, they assist invasion into the host cell. Analyses have been performed on proteins located in rhoptries in Toxoplasma and Plasmodium. Among the proteins that have been analyzed, the …
