Energy And Economy: Recognizing High-Energy Modernity As A Historical Period, Thomas Love, Cindy Isenhour Jan 2016

Energy And Economy: Recognizing High-Energy Modernity As A Historical Period, Thomas Love, Cindy Isenhour

Faculty Publications

This introduction to Economic Anthropology’s special issue on “Energy and Economy” argues that we might find inspiration for a much more engaged and public anthropology in an unlikely place—19th century evolutionist thought. In addition to studying the particularities of energy transitions, which anthropology does so well, a more engaged anthropology might also broaden its temporal horizons to consider the nature of the future “stage” into which humanity is hurtling in an era of resource depletion and climate change. Net energy (EROEI), or the energy “surplus” on which we build and maintain our complex societal arrangements, is a key tool …

The authors discuss the testing methods, results, and teaching opportunities, both realized and potential, which arose from implementing changes.

Vocational Education And Training (Vet) Of Quantity Surveying In Hong Kong, Ken Hui Jan 2016

Vocational Education And Training (Vet) Of Quantity Surveying In Hong Kong, Ken Hui

Staff Publications

Vocational education and training (VET) in Hong Kong has long been regarded as non-mainstream and second-tier education for students who failed in academic education (Lim, 2008, 2010). The government of HKSAR and some non-government organizations are offering education programmes for these students in concerning with social injustice. In Hong Kong, VET has acquired a stigma and is automatically seen as second-class education. (Lim, 2008). This assertion is tested on quantity surveying education in this study. Quantity surveying education originated as part time day-release programmes which allowed students to receive academic and practical training at the same time. It was then …

An 11-Switch Multilevel Inverter With A Modified Space Vector Modulation, J. Jamaludin, N.A. Rahim, W.P. Hew Jan 2016

An 11-Switch Multilevel Inverter With A Modified Space Vector Modulation, J. Jamaludin, N.A. Rahim, W.P. Hew

Research Publications (2016 to 2020)

This paper proposes a new 3-phase multilevel inverter that is able to generate 7 levels in line-to-line voltage with only 11 switches. The inverter is formed from the 6-switch conventional full-bridge topology with the addition of 5 bidirectional switches in which 2 of them are shared among the three phases. By doing so, the number of power switches can be minimized, thus reducing the complexity in generating and controlling PWM signals. A novel voltage control scheme based on space vector modulation is developed by introducing a virtual vector in every sector of the vector hexagon. This is to overcome the …

Optimisation Of Pid Controller For Load Frequency Control In Two-Area Power System Using Evolutionary Particle Swarm Optimisation, Hazlee Azil Illias, A.F.M. Zahari, Hazlie Mokhlis

Research Publications (2016 to 2020)

The main objectives of load frequency control (LFC) are to regulate the electrical power supply in two-area power system and change the system frequency and tie-line load. The performance of LFC has to be tuned properly so that its performance can be optimised. However, most of the tuning processes are performed through trial and error until the best performance is achieved. Therefore, to overcome this situation, in this work, particle swarm optimization (PSO) and evolutionary particle swarm optimization (EPSO) algorithms were employed in a LFC of twoarea power system to optimise the performance of the PID controller. The purpose of …

Feeling And Healing Eco-Social Catastrophe: The "Horrific" Slipstream Of Danis Goulet's Wakening, Salma Monani Jan 2016

Feeling And Healing Eco-Social Catastrophe: The "Horrific" Slipstream Of Danis Goulet's Wakening, Salma Monani

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Cree/Métis filmmaker Danis Goulet’s science fiction short Wakening (2013) is set in Canada’s near future, yet the film reveals a slipstream of time where viewers are invited to contemplate the horrors of ecosocial crises—future, past, and present. I argue Wakening, as futuristic ecohorror, produces horrific feelings in the moment of its viewing that are inevitably entangled with the past, inviting its audiences to experience the monstrous contexts of Indigenous lives across time. To articulate this temporal dynamism, I overlay two key conceptual understandings: Walter Benjamin’s critiques of Western progress and historicism, and Indigenous notions of a Native slipstream. When brought …

Attitudes Towards Tax Evasion In Turkey And Australia: A Comparative Study, Robert W. Mcgee, Ken Devos, Serkan Benk

College of Business and Economics

The authors conducted a survey of 502 Turkish and Australian undergraduate and graduate business and economic students to determine their views regarding the ethics of tax evasion. These two groups were selected on the premise that their views represented the perceptions of two very different cultures, which has not been investigated in previous studies. The survey instrument required students to indicate their level of agreeableness to 18 general statements representing various scenarios in the socio-economic environment. The statements in the survey reflected the three main viewpoints regarding the ethics of tax evasion which have emerged from the literature to date. …

The Influence Of A Severe Reservoir Drawdown On Springtime Zooplankton And Larval Fish Assemblages In Red Willow Reservoir, Nebraska, Jason A. Deboer, Christa M. Webber, Taylor A. Dixon, Kevin L. Pope Jan 2016

The Influence Of A Severe Reservoir Drawdown On Springtime Zooplankton And Larval Fish Assemblages In Red Willow Reservoir, Nebraska, Jason A. Deboer, Christa M. Webber, Taylor A. Dixon, Kevin L. Pope

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Reservoirs can be dynamic systems, often prone to unpredictable and extreme waterlevel fluctuations, and can be environments where survival is difficult for zooplankton and larval fish. Although numerous studies have examined the effects of extreme reservoir drawdown on water quality, few have examined extreme drawdown on both abiotic and biotic characteristics. A fissure in the dam at Red Willow Reservoir in southwest Nebraska necessitated an extreme drawdown; the water level was lowered more than 6 m during a two-month period, reducing reservoir volume by 76%. During the subsequent low-water period (i.e., post-drawdown), spring sampling (April-June) showed dissolved oxygen concentration was …

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Non-native trout are currently stocked to support recreational fisheries in headwater streams throughout Nebraska. The influence of non-native trout introductions on native fish populations and their role in structuring fish assemblages in these systems is unknown. The objectives of this study were to determine (i) if the size structure or relative abundance of native fish differs in the presence and absence of non-native trout, (ii) if native fish-assemblage structure differs in the presence and absence of non-native trout and (iii) if native fish-assemblage structure differs across a gradient in abundances of non-native trout. Longnose dace Rhinichthys cataractae were larger in …

Influence Of Anglers’ Specializations On Catch, Harvest, And Bycatch Of Targeted Taxa, Kevin L. Pope, Christopher J. Chizinski, Christopher L. Wiley, Dustin R. Martin Jan 2016

Influence Of Anglers’ Specializations On Catch, Harvest, And Bycatch Of Targeted Taxa, Kevin L. Pope, Christopher J. Chizinski, Christopher L. Wiley, Dustin R. Martin

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Fishery managers often use catch per unit effort (CPUE) of a given taxon derived from a group of anglers, those that sought said taxon, to evaluate fishery objectives because managers assume CPUE for this group of anglers is most sensitive to changes in fish taxon density. Further, likelihood of harvest may differ for sought and non-sought taxa if taxon sought is a defining characteristic of anglers’ attitude toward harvest. We predicted that taxon-specific catch across parties and reservoirs would be influenced by targeted taxon after controlling for number of anglers in a party and time spent fishing (combine to quantify fishing effort …
