Diffuse Co2 Degassing And The Origin Of Volcanic Gas Variability From Rincón De La Vieja, Miravalles And Tenorio Volcanoes, Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica, Aurelia Liegler Jan 2016

Diffuse Co2 Degassing And The Origin Of Volcanic Gas Variability From Rincón De La Vieja, Miravalles And Tenorio Volcanoes, Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica, Aurelia Liegler

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Volcanic gas emissions are an important key component for monitoring volcanic activity and magmatic input of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere as well as the assessment of geothermal potential in volcanic regions. Diffuse soil degassing of CO2 at Rincón de la Vieja and Miravalles volcanoes, assessed with the commonly accepted accumulation chamber method, showed the concentration of gas emissions in evident hydrothermal surface features in secondary gas emission zones of the volcanoes. Analyses of fumarolic gases were conducted to investigate similarities and differences between the volcanoes and the possibility of continued magma injection into their source(s). An output of …

Reservoir Estimation In The Penobscot 3d Seismic Volume Using Constrained Sparse Spike Inversion, Offshore Nova Scotia, Canada, Mengchu Xiao

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The Penobscot study area is located offshore Nova Scotia, Canada. There are two wells, which penetrate the highest potentially commercial bodies in the Abenaki Formation. In order to investigate the potential for locating additional hydrocarbon reservoirs, well log data was used and the Penobscot 3D seismic dataset was analyzed using Constrained Sparse Spike Inversion. From the well log data, low GR and SP values are an indication of a permeable sand layer, which provides the target zone in this study. Impedance – porosity crossplots gave the relationship between impedance and porosity, where a low impedance sand layer is correlated with …

A Comparison Of Latent Class Analysis And The Mixture Rasch Model: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of 8th Grade Mathematics Achievement In The Fourth International Mathematics And Science Study (Timss-2011), Turker Toker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study provides a comparison of the results of latent class analysis (LCA) and mixture Rasch model (MRM) analysis using data from the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study - 2011 (TIMSS-2011) with a focus on the 8th-grade mathematics section. The research study focuses on the comparison of LCA with Mplus version 7.31 and MRM with WinMira 2011 to determine if results obtained differ when the assumed psychometric model differs. Also, a log-linear analysis was conducted to understand the interactions between latent classes identified by LCA and MRM. The data set used in the study was from four diverse …

Missed Appropriations: Uncovering Heidegger's Debt To Kierkegaard In Being And Time, Kenneth David Geter Jan 2016

Missed Appropriations: Uncovering Heidegger's Debt To Kierkegaard In Being And Time, Kenneth David Geter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is widely held that Martin Heidegger appropriated several existential concepts from Søren Kierkegaard in his 1927 work, Being and Time. Most scholars agree that Heidegger did not sufficiently credit Kierkegaard. What was the extent of the appropriation, and why did Heidegger not duly cite Kierkegaard? This work will focus on the concept of anxiety which appears throughout Being and Time and which was influenced by the concept of the same name presented in Kierkegaard's 1844 work The Concept of Anxiety. It will also be seen how the structure of Being and Time closely resembles that of Concept …

Cultural Sensitivity: Early Career Teacher Beliefs, Espoused Theories, Theories In Use, Michelle Steinberger Jan 2016

Cultural Sensitivity: Early Career Teacher Beliefs, Espoused Theories, Theories In Use, Michelle Steinberger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine early career teacher practice and beliefs about students of color in their classrooms and the relationship between those beliefs and their classroom practices. In this study, seven teachers in the initial five years of their teaching career were interviewed and observed inside of their classrooms using the Quality Responsive Classroom Observation Protocol. The interview questions were developed to look at the beliefs, teacher preparation, and culturally responsive pedagogy of early career teachers. Data was then analyzed using the five tenets of the Critical Race Theory: (1) Centrality of Race and Racism; (2) …

Enhancements To Hierarchical Pathfinding Algorithms, Xin Li Jan 2016

Enhancements To Hierarchical Pathfinding Algorithms, Xin Li

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis we study the problem of pathfinding in static grid-based maps. We apply the approach of abstraction and refinement. We abstract the grid map into a graph representation, and use the classic A* algorithm to search for a path in the abstract space, and then refine it into low-level path.

We started with a 2013 entry program to the Grid-based Path Planning Competition, and implemented several enhancements to experiment with the tradeoff between memory usage and search speed. Our program returns the refined low-level path incrementally, therefore reduces the first-move lag in large maps. We cache the low-level …

Development Of A Measure Of Interprofessional Collaboration Among School Mental Health Professionals, Jessica I. Colebrook Jan 2016

Development Of A Measure Of Interprofessional Collaboration Among School Mental Health Professionals, Jessica I. Colebrook

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Collaboration is frequently put forth as one way to improve academic, behavioral, and social-emotional outcomes for K-12 students. Yet to date, there is little evidence-based research supporting this claim (Mellin, 2009; Trach, 2012). In order to collect such research, collaboration must be a measurable variable. This study was a first step in understanding interprofessional collaboration specifically among school mental health professionals such as school psychologists, school social workers, school counselors, and other school-based mental health professionals. The purpose of this study was to develop a measure of school mental health professionals' current perceptions of interprofessional collaboration with and among their …

Design And Development Of An Air Supply System For An Unmanned Circulation Control Aerial Vehicle, Pranith Chander Saka

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Small-scale Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have been used for decades and are increasing in number and effectiveness as aircraft, sensor and automation technologies mature. Since the demand for UAV platforms capable of performing multiple missions with enhanced performance is increasing, technologies as Circulation Control (CC), which is an active flow control technique that is used to achieve enhanced payload and aerodynamic efficiency, attracts the interest of the research community. This thesis describes the design, development, integration and testing (ground and flight testing) of a CC system capable to provide the required mass flow for a CC-based flight. Performance evaluation is conducted …

The Role Of Auctions In University Intellectual Property Transactions, Daniel R. Cahoy, Anthony M. Kwasnica, Luis A. Lopez Jan 2016

The Role Of Auctions In University Intellectual Property Transactions, Daniel R. Cahoy, Anthony M. Kwasnica, Luis A. Lopez

Duquesne Law Review

Reflecting the trend in the business community, universities are increasingly investing in intellectual property rights. But they are often unsuccessful in realizing licensing revenues that provide adequate return on investment. This paper considers how auctions could potentially increase licensing efficiency and make university intellectual property transactions more productive. The paper begins by placing the auction in the universe of possible transaction forms and considers how well it aligns to the unique nature of university rights. Penn State's recent patent auctions provide useful context. The paper then provides recommendations to modify the auction structure for maximum benefit in university intellectual property …

Methods For Deriving Individual Marks From Group Work, Miriam Delaney, Lucy Bowe, Breiffni Fitzgerald, Peter Maccann, Christina Ryan

Practitioner Research Projects

Group assessment is a valuable teaching and learning method (Springer et al., 1999). This has been comprehensively demonstrated in the teaching and learning literature both in general (Johnson et al., 1991) and in specific contexts. This assessment practice promotes questioning, discussion and debate and encourages students to become active team players (DIT, 2013). However, when using this form of assessment, it is important to recognise that it is "individuals who graduate and gain qualifications" (Gibbs, 2009, p.4). The problem of freeloading has been identified and one of the suggested methods of reducing this is to incorporate individual assessment into the …

Ecological theory predicts that diversity decreases variability in ecosystem function. We predict that, at the landscape scale, spatial variability created by a mosaic of contrasting patches that differ in time since disturbance will decrease temporal variability in aboveground plant biomass. Using data from a multi-year study of seven grazed tallgrass prairie landscapes, each experimentally managed for one to eight patches, we show that increased spatial variability driven by spatially patchy fire and herbivory reduces temporal variability in aboveground plant biomass. This pattern is associated with statistical evidence for the portfolio effect and a positive relationship between temporal variability and functional …
