Lattices From Tight Equiangular Frames, Albrecht Böttcher, Lenny Fukshansky, Stephan Ramon Garcia, Hiren Maharaj, Deanna Needell
CMC Faculty Publications and Research
We consider the set of all linear combinations with integer coefficients of the vectors of a unit tight equiangular (k,n) frame and are interested in the question whether this set is a lattice, that is, a discrete additive subgroup of the k-dimensional Euclidean space. We show that this is not the case if the cosine of the angle of the frame is irrational. We also prove that the set is a lattice for n=k+1 and that there are infinitely many k such that a lattice emerges for n=2k. We dispose of all cases in dimensions k at most 9. In …

Lattice Theory And Toeplitz Determinants, Albrecht Böttcher, Lenny Fukshansky, Stephan Ramon Garcia, Hiren Maharaj
CMC Faculty Publications and Research
This is a survey of our recent joint investigations of lattices that are generated by finite Abelian groups. In the case of cyclic groups, the volume of a fundamental domain of such a lattice is a perturbed Toeplitz determinant with a simple Fisher-Hartwig symbol. For general groups, the situation is more complicated, but it can still be tackled by pure matrix theory. Our main result on the lattices under consideration states that they always have a basis of minimal vectors, while our results in the other direction concern exact and asymptotic formulas for perturbed Toeplitz determinants. The survey is a …

On Arithmetic Lattices In The Plane, Lenny Fukshansky, Pavel Guerzhoy, Florian Luca
CMC Faculty Publications and Research
We investigate similarity classes of arithmetic lattices in the plane. We introduce a natural height function on the set of such similarity classes, and give asymptotic estimates on the number of all arithmetic similarity classes, semi-stable arithmetic similarity classes, and well-rounded arithmetic similarity classes of bounded height as the bound tends to infinity. We also briefly discuss some properties of the j-invariant corresponding to similarity classes of planar lattices.

Flipped Learning Instruction: Differentiating Mathematics Instruction Through The Use Of Technology, Nathan A. Flansburg
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the relationship between mathematics achievement and the instructional approach used (flipped versus traditional). A suburban school district located outside of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul implemented flipped learning instruction in one-half of all six elementary sites across the district. Half of the students in fifth grade mathematics classes received instruction via traditional lecture-style teaching methodology while the other half of the students received instruction via flipped learning instruction. Data was collected over three years time and a comparison of the quantitative results based on flipped versus non-flipped classes, differences between student groups as defined …

Abstract This is a quantitative cross sectional survey design dual method study to test a theory that relates arts integration to achievement for students in grades two through six at three arts magnet schools and five non-arts schools in two school districts in Minnesota. Demographic groups studied included special education, ethnicity, socioeconomic status (FR), Limited English Proficiency (LEP), gender, and gifted. The dual design method included the use of cross tabulations, chi-square tests, MAP RIT results, and teacher practice survey responses to find relationships. Oreck’s (2000) Teaching with the Arts Survey (TWAS) was examined and used as a resource to …
A Case Study Of How Teacher Preparation Programs In Minnesota Are Preparing Elementary Teachers To Work With English Learners, Sarah Lynn Stay
A Case Study Of How Teacher Preparation Programs In Minnesota Are Preparing Elementary Teachers To Work With English Learners, Sarah Lynn Stay
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As the population of English Learners in mainstream classrooms across the United States continue to increase, it is critical that all classroom teachers (not just English language specialists) take responsibility for and are adequately prepared for working with and educating ELs. The exponential growth of culturally and linguistically diverse students in the public school system raises important questions about teacher preparation. Since academic achievement in elementary school directly correlates to high school graduation rates, it is critical to examine current teacher education programs and the opportunities within these programs that provide an understanding of EL needs. This study will examine …

Attitude Toward Multiculturalism: Majority In The Minority Perspective, Elke Murdock, Dieter Ferrings
Attitude Toward Multiculturalism: Majority In The Minority Perspective, Elke Murdock, Dieter Ferrings
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
Even within a globalizing world, Luxembourg takes an exceptional position with a foreign population of 44%. In the capital of Luxembourg, home to one-fifth of the country’s population, native members make up only 33% of the population. Outwardly the cosmopolitan diversity is praised, but how does the native population, which finds itself in the minority in its own capital, perceive this increasingly plural composition of society? To investigate this specific “majority-as-minority” perspective, we conducted a quantitative study within a Luxembourg employer (N = 507) with a large native-born workforce. We examined the endorsement of multiculturalism with an adapted version of …
A Critical Policy Analysis Of Texas’ Closing The Gaps 2015, Katherine Cumings Mansfield, Stefani Thachik
A Critical Policy Analysis Of Texas’ Closing The Gaps 2015, Katherine Cumings Mansfield, Stefani Thachik
Educational Leadership Publications
This critical policy analysis uses critical race theory to provide a counter narrative to the P-16 initiative in Texas known as Closing the Gaps 2015. Findings indicate that while these reforms aim to increase educational access and achievement for people of color, they fall short of addressing systemic inequities such as enduring segregation and unconstitutional school finance policy. Using Texas as a case study illumines the ways the growing number of P-16 councils throughout the US might adapt and improve policy development and implementation to more adequately address educational inequities across racial, ethnic, and linguistic groups. The article closes …

An Improved Tight-Binding Model For Phosphorene, Kursti Delello
An Improved Tight-Binding Model For Phosphorene, Kursti Delello
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The intent of this thesis is to improve upon previously proposed tight-binding models for one dimensional black phosphorus, or phosphorene. Previous models offer only a qualitative analysis of the band structure of phosphorene, and fail to fully realize critical elements in the electronic band structure necessary for transport calculations. In this work we propose an improved tight-binding model for phosphorene by including up to eight nearest-neighbor interactions. The efficacy of the model is verified by comparison with DFT-HSE06 calculations, and the anisotropy of the effective masses in the armchair and zigzag directions is considered.

Investigation Of Hypothetico-Creative Reasoning Skills Of Teacher Trainees In Terms Of Their Thinking Styles, İsmail Gelen, Volkan Duran, Bayram Ozer
Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
Thinking styles more boradly intellectual styles refers to people’s partly fixed, relatively stable and innate preferences about information processing and handling with the tasks that they may confront (Zhang & Sternberg, 2005). Sternberg’s (1988) introduced of the theory of mental self-government, where intellectual style specifies 13 thinking styles that fall along five dimensions of mental self-government: (a) functions, (b) forms, (c) levels, (d) scopes, and (e) leanings of government as applied to individuals (Zhang, Sternberg, Rayner, 2002: 14).Hypothetico-Creative reasoning model developed by Duran (2014) can be defined skills including logical and creative thinking skills in 12 dimensions. This study, is …

Galvanic Corrosion Of Aluminum/Carbon Composite Systems, Eva Håkansson
Galvanic Corrosion Of Aluminum/Carbon Composite Systems, Eva Håkansson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Aluminum/carbon composite systems can have outstanding mechanical properties. Aluminum and carbon fiber reinforced polymer matrix composites (CFRP) are typically considered corrosion resistant when used alone, but can develop severe galvanic corrosion when in physical contact in the same component or structure.
General engineering practice is to avoid contact between aluminum and CFRP in any application where moisture may be present, but it is still of great importance to understand the consequences if the two materials accidentally become in contact. There may also be applications where a low rate of galvanic corrosion is acceptable.
This dissertation contributes unique experimental and numerical …
Growing Food Security: The Impact Of Community Gardens On Food Security In Denver, Colorado, Grace Catherine Kellner
Growing Food Security: The Impact Of Community Gardens On Food Security In Denver, Colorado, Grace Catherine Kellner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Community gardens increase mental health, physical health and social inclusiveness and cohesiveness, while directly connecting gardeners to their environment. In some U.S. cities gardens additionally increase community and individual food security by providing fresh food to those who struggle to feed themselves and their families. This study examined the relationship between community gardens and increased food security in Denver, and is one of the first studies of its kind in this location. Specifically, I investigated who participates in community gardens, why they participate, whether gardens are accessible, and whether community gardens have the potential to improve individual and community food …

The goal of the DrIVER (Drought Impacts: Vulnerability thresholds in monitoring and Early-warning Research) research project is to understand the links between natural (hydro-meteorological) drought and ecological response and socio-economic impacts to aid in developing enhanced drought early warning systems (DEWS). Three stakeholder workshops were convened in the USA, UK and Australia. The USA water supply case study engaged 27 community water suppliers and state, federal and private advisors in the Neuse and Cape Fear River basins in North Carolina. The UK workshop involved 34 national and regional stakeholders across the water supply, environmental regulation, agriculture, energy and health sectors. …

From Grassroots To National Alliance: The Emerging Trajectory For Landowner Prescribed Burn Associations, John R. Weir, Dirac L. Twidwell, Carissa L. Wonkka
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
• Due to woody plant encroachment and seeing the need for fire on their lands, private landowners throughout the southern Great Plains have started forming prescribed burn associations (PBA) to assist each other with conducting prescribed fires. • Members of PBAs work together by pooling equipment and other resources, organizing training opportunities, and assisting with prescribed burns on each other’s properties, while teaching upcoming generations and inexperienced members the value of fire in grassland conservation and how to safely use it. • There are over 50 PBAs working in the southern Great Plains. As the number of PBAs has grown …

Rangeland Responses To Predicted Increases In Drought Extremity, David D. Breshears, Alan K. Knapp, Darin J. Law, Melinda D. Smith, Dirac L. Twidwell, Carissa L. Wonkka
National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
Rangeland managers actively focus on the potential to induce a shift in a site to an alternative state, but predicted changes in climate, particularly the likelihood of more extreme drought, necessitate reevaluating risks for alternative states. • Rangelands will differ in their susceptibility to undergo state changes due to climate change in general and for droughts of the future, in particular, which may be hotter. • Trees, shrubs, and grasses are expected to differ in their sensitivity to drought, with trees likely being most sensitive; this affects the likelihood for state changes in grasslands, shrublands, woodlands, and savannas. • Considering …

Graph Diffusions And Matrix Functions: Fast Algorithms And Localization Results, Kyle Kloster
Open Access Dissertations
Network analysis provides tools for addressing fundamental applications in graphs such as webpage ranking, protein-function prediction, and product categorization and recommendation. As real-world networks grow to have millions of nodes and billions of edges, the scalability of network analysis algorithms becomes increasingly important. Whereas many standard graph algorithms rely on matrix-vector operations that require exploring the entire graph, this thesis is concerned with graph algorithms that are local (that explore only the graph region near the nodes of interest) as well as the localized behavior of global algorithms. We prove that two well-studied matrix functions for graph analysis, PageRank and …
