Recent Advances In Development And Applications Of The Mixed Quantum/Classical Theory For Inelastic Scattering, Dmitri Babikov, Alexander Semenov Jan 2016

Recent Advances In Development And Applications Of The Mixed Quantum/Classical Theory For Inelastic Scattering, Dmitri Babikov, Alexander Semenov

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

A mixed quantum/classical approach to inelastic scattering (MQCT) is developed in which the relative motion of two collision partners is treated classically, and the rotational and vibrational motion of each molecule is treated quantum mechanically. The cases of molecule + atom and molecule + molecule are considered including diatomics, symmetric-top rotors, and asymmetric-top rotor molecules. Phase information is taken into consideration, permitting calculations of elastic and inelastic, total and differential cross sections for excitation and quenching. The method is numerically efficient and intrinsically parallel. The scaling law of MQCT is favorable, which enables calculations at high collision energies and for …

Effect Of Branch-Chain Elongation On Physicochemical Properties And Digestibility Characterization Of Waxy Corn Starch, He Jian, Wang Ren, Zhang Hao, Zhou Xing, Chen Zhengxing

Food and Machinery

Waxy corn starch (WCS) was modified by amylosucrase (AS). The effect of starch elongation degree on the digestibility and physicochemical properties of modified waxy corn starch (WCS) was investigated. The results showed that under the given reaction condition, enzymatic reaction could be fitted by a logarithmic mathematical model. Compared with native starch, the modified WCSs expressed a continuous matrix structure, and the packing arrangement of crystalline converted from A-type into B-type. With transglycosylation rate (TR) increasing, an increased tendency of proportion of Fr I (DP>30) was observed, whereas the contents of Fr III (DP<13) was significantly decreased. In vitro test …

Microwave Measurements Of The Tropolone-Formic Acid Doubly Hydrogen Bonded Dimer, Aaron M. Pejlovas, Agapito Serrato, Wei Lin, Stephen G. Kukolich Jan 2016

Microwave Measurements Of The Tropolone-Formic Acid Doubly Hydrogen Bonded Dimer, Aaron M. Pejlovas, Agapito Serrato, Wei Lin, Stephen G. Kukolich

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

The microwave spectrum was measured for the doubly hydrogen bonded dimer formed between tropolone and formic acid. The predicted symmetry of this dimer was C2v(M), and it was expected that the concerted proton tunneling motion would be observed. After measuring 25 a- and b-type rotational transitions, no splittings which could be associated with a concerted double proton tunneling motion were observed. The calculated barrier to the proton tunneling motion is near 15 000 cm-1, which would likely make the tunneling frequencies too small to observe in the microwave spectra. The rotational and centrifugal distortion constants determined from the measured transitions …

Is Socrates Dead (In Mathematics)?: The Role Of The Mathematics Teacher In Higher Education Now And For The Next Ten Years, Mary K. Landers

Bollinger-Rosado Teaching & Learning Effectiveness Symposium Proceedings

Socratic questioning is an important tool of the mathematical trade for mathematicians and students alike. Simply turning the crank" is not mathematics. Without the willingness and/or ability for Socratic thought new worlds of mathematics for the future may not be invented nor discovered. Therefore, future students of mathematics need not only be taught to learn from the past but to question toward the future as well. Consequently, the teacher of mathematics must fill a dual role:

a) that of purveyor of facts and methods for the application of those already established structures that comprise mathematical thought and b) that of …

Teaching Business Courses At Extended Campuses, William S. Sachs Jan 2016

Teaching Business Courses At Extended Campuses, William S. Sachs

Bollinger-Rosado Teaching & Learning Effectiveness Symposium Proceedings

Teaching business courses at extended campuses raises three main problems: a shortage of time available to students; the quality of academic skills of the student body; the relevancy of course material which syllabi and course outlines make mandatory. The author makes several recommendations to alleviate these problems.

Lastly, the role of professors is viewed from the perspective of a communication model. As experts in their respective fields, PhDs act as knowledge-transmitting mechanisms. Students play the role of receptors, which are the creators of individual learning. To facilitate this communication process between teachers and students, the paper suggests systematic research into …

Teaching Strategies For Today's College Classroom, Francis Herlehy Iii, Merodie A. Hancock Jan 2016

Teaching Strategies For Today's College Classroom, Francis Herlehy Iii, Merodie A. Hancock

Bollinger-Rosado Teaching & Learning Effectiveness Symposium Proceedings

Everybody has something to say about teaching. Everyone has an opinion on the subject. This is probably because everyone has been on the receiving end of it.

It is a favorite pastime of students to compare and contrast their professors. Much, if not most, of what they have to say is of a personal nature. Conspicuous in its absence is anything of substance about their teaching.

Talk at faculty meetings isn't much better. You will hear about lighter teaching loads, smaller class sizes, and fewer committee assignments. Invariably, some intrepid instructor might even suggest the need for better instruction. Talk …

Teaching And Technology Techniques For Teachers In Online Learning Environments, Sallie J. Johnson Jan 2016

Teaching And Technology Techniques For Teachers In Online Learning Environments, Sallie J. Johnson

Bollinger-Rosado Teaching & Learning Effectiveness Symposium Proceedings

When developing and delivering instruction, whether online or not, the use of technology is secondary to well-designed learning goals and objectives. What distinguishes online instruction and technology in the classroom from entertainment or recreation is the conceptual development of teaching techniques based on solid learning theories. This paper proposes a conceptual framework for implementing teaching and technology techniques for online learning environments.

Tech'knowledge'y Anxiety, Francis Herlehy Iii, Merodie A. Hancock Jan 2016

Tech'knowledge'y Anxiety, Francis Herlehy Iii, Merodie A. Hancock

Bollinger-Rosado Teaching & Learning Effectiveness Symposium Proceedings

There is a plethora of literature on educational software and hardware. Equally as much has been written about technology and the learning environment. Conspicuous in its absence is discussion of the liveware component of educational technology, the faculty member.

Changing educational technologies are threatening many faculty members' sense of security and even, in some cases, their very livelihoods. Those faculty members who are willing to face their concerns 'head-on' can learn to convert their apprehension into the motivation needed to make changes that will assure them of success in today's high technology, learning environment.

Gravity wave packets excited by a source of finite duration and size possess a broad frequency and wave number spectrum and thus span a range of temporal and spatial scales. Observing at a single location relatively close to the source, the wave components with higher frequency and larger vertical wavelength dominate at earlier times and at higher altitudes, while the lower frequency components, with shorter vertical wavelength, dominate during the latter part of the propagation. Utilizing observations from the Na lidar at Utah State University and the nearby Mesospheric Temperature Mapper at Bear Lake Observatory (41.9ÁN, 111.4ÁW), we investigate a …

The Tokai to Kamioka (T2K) long-baseline neutrino experiment consists of a muon neutrino beam, produced at the J-PARC accelerator, a near detector complex and a large 295-km-distant far detector. The present work utilizes the T2K event timing measurements at the near and far detectors to study neutrino time of flight as a function of derived neutrino energy. Under the assumption of a relativistic relation between energy and time of flight, constraints on the neutrino rest mass can be derived. The sub-GeV neutrino beam in conjunction with timing precision of order tens of ns provide sensitivity to neutrino mass in the …

Incentivizing Quantity And Quality Of Output: An Experimental Investigation Of The Quantity-Quality Trade-Off, Jared Rubin, Anya Samek, Roman M. Sheremeta

ESI Working Papers

Firms face an optimization problem that requires a maximal quantity output given a quality constraint. How firms should incentivize quantity and quality to meet these dual goals remains an open question, potentially due to limitations of field data. We provide a theoretical model and conduct an experiment in which participants are paid for both quantity and quality of a real effort task. Consistent with the theoretical predictions, higher quality incentives encourage participants to shift their attention from quantity to quality, and higher quality incentives reduce inefficient decision-making. We also observe behavioral components in responsiveness to the quality incentive.

Gendermag: A Method For Evaluating Software’S Gender Inclusiveness, Margaret Burnett, Simone Stump, Jamie C. Macbeth, Stephann Makri, Laura Beckwith, Irwin Kwan, Anicia Peters, William Jernigan

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

In recent years, research into gender differences has established that individual differences in how people problem-solve often cluster by gender. Research also shows that these differences have direct implications for software that aims to support users’ problem-solving activities, and that much of this software is more supportive of problem-solving processes favored (statistically) more by males than by females. However, there is almost no work considering how software practitioners—such as User Experience (UX) professionals or software developers—can find genderinclusiveness issues like these in their software. To address this gap, we devised the GenderMag method for evaluating problem-solving software from a gender-inclusiveness …

Off Target: Selection, Precaution, And Proportionality In The Dod Manual, Adil Ahmad Haque Jan 2016

Off Target: Selection, Precaution, And Proportionality In The Dod Manual, Adil Ahmad Haque

International Law Studies

The United States Department of Defense Law of War Manual misrepresents customary international law governing target selection, precautions in attack and proportionality. Contrary to the Manual’s assertions, attackers with a choice of targets for obtaining a similar military advantage must select the target that endangers the fewest civilians; often must avoid harming civilians even at some additional risk to themselves or to their mission; and must refrain from attack if the expected harm to civilians—including to civilians forced to serve as human shields—would be excessive in relation to the anticipated military advantage.

Evgeny Tsymbal Publications

The effect of nitrogen doping on the phonon spectra of graphene is analyzed. In particular, we employ first-principles calculations and scanning Raman analysis to investigate the dependence of phonon frequencies in graphene on the concentration of nitrogen dopants. We demonstrate that the G phonon frequency shows oscillatory behavior as a function of nitrogen concentration. We analyze different mechanisms which could potentially be responsible for this behavior, such as Friedel charge oscillations around the localized nitrogen impurity atom, the bond length change between nitrogen impurity and its nearest neighbor carbon atoms, and the long-range interactions of the nitrogen point defects. We …

A Test Of Symmetry Based On The Kernel Kullback-Leibler Information With Application To Base Deficit Data, Hani M. Samawi, Robert L. Vogel

Biostatistics: Faculty Publications

The assumption of the symmetry of the underlying distribution is important to many statistical inference and modeling procedures. This paper provides a test of symmetry using kernel density estimation and the Kullback-Leibler information. Based on simulation studies, the new test procedure outperforms other tests of symmetry found in the literature, including the Runs Test of Symmetry. We illustrate our new procedure using real data.

Gender Representation In The Vision Sciences: A Longitudinal Study, Emily A. Cooper, Ana Radonjic Jan 2016

Gender Representation In The Vision Sciences: A Longitudinal Study, Emily A. Cooper, Ana Radonjic

Dartmouth Scholarship

Understanding the current status and historical trends of gender representation within a research field is an important component of fostering a diverse and inclusive scientific community. Here, we report on the gender representation of a large sample of the vision science research community—the attendees of the Annual Meeting of the Vision Sciences Society (VSS). Our analysis shows that the majority of scientists at all career levels in our sample are male. This imbalance is most pronounced for the senior scientists, whereas predoctoral students are nearly balanced between the genders. Historically, the gender imbalance was larger than it is at present, …
