Distributed Visualization Of Gridded Geophysical Data: The Carbon Data Explorer, Version 0.2.3, Kevin Arthur Endsley, Michael G. Billmire Jan 2016

Distributed Visualization Of Gridded Geophysical Data: The Carbon Data Explorer, Version 0.2.3, Kevin Arthur Endsley, Michael G. Billmire

Michigan Tech Research Institute Publications

Due to the proliferation of geophysical models, particularly climate models, the increasing resolution of their spatiotemporal estimates of Earth system processes, and the desire to easily share results with collaborators, there is a genuine need for tools to manage, aggregate, visualize, and share data sets. We present a new, web-based software tool – the Carbon Data Explorer – that provides these capabilities for gridded geophysical data sets. While originally developed for visualizing carbon flux, this tool can accommodate any time-varying, spatially explicit scientific data set, particularly NASA Earth system science level III products. In addition, the tool's open-source licensing and …

Integrating Hot And Cool Intelligences: Thinking Broadly About Broad Abilities, W. Joel Schneider, John D. Mayer, Daniel A. Newman Jan 2016

Integrating Hot And Cool Intelligences: Thinking Broadly About Broad Abilities, W. Joel Schneider, John D. Mayer, Daniel A. Newman

Psychology

Although results from factor-analytic studies of the broad, second-stratum abilities of human intelligence have been fairly consistent for decades, the list of broad abilities is far from complete, much less understood. We propose criteria by which the list of broad abilities could be amended and envision alternatives for how our understanding of the hot intelligences (abilities involving emotionally-salient information) and cool intelligences (abilities involving perceptual processing and logical reasoning) might be integrated into a coherent theoretical framework.

Feminist-In-Chief? Examining President Obama's Executive Orders On Women's Rights Issues, Mary Pat Treuthart Jan 2016

Feminist-In-Chief? Examining President Obama's Executive Orders On Women's Rights Issues, Mary Pat Treuthart

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This article focuses on President Obama’s use of executive orders in various areas of women’s rights issues including the empowerment of women, gender-based violence, reproductive rights, and employment. As scholars of the American presidency have noted, executive orders can be used either as strategic tools to short-circuit legislative gridlock or to underscore and complement presidential policy measures pending in Congress. Executive orders can also serve to promote projects of special interest groups. Finally, knowing that their directives can be powerfully symbolic, presidents can be particularly effective in the use of executive action to underscore the gulf between the Democratic Party …

Key Management Scheme Based On Route Planning Of Mobile Sink In Wireless Sensor Networks, Ying Zhang, Jixing Liang, Bingxin Zheng, Shengming Jiang, Wei Chen Jan 2016

Key Management Scheme Based On Route Planning Of Mobile Sink In Wireless Sensor Networks, Ying Zhang, Jixing Liang, Bingxin Zheng, Shengming Jiang, Wei Chen

Computer Science Faculty Research

In many wireless sensor network application scenarios the key management scheme with a Mobile Sink (MS) should be fully investigated. This paper proposes a key management scheme based on dynamic clustering and optimal-routing choice of MS. The concept of Traveling Salesman Problem with Neighbor areas (TSPN) in dynamic clustering for data exchange is proposed, and the selection probability is used in MS route planning. The proposed scheme extends static key management to dynamic key management by considering the dynamic clustering and mobility of MSs, which can effectively balance the total energy consumption during the activities. Considering the different resources available …

Growth Control Of Oxygen Stoichiometry In Homoepitaxial Srtio3 Films By Pulsed Laser Epitaxy In High Vacuum, Ho Nyung Lee, Sung S. Ambrose Seo, Woo Seok Choi, Christopher M. Rouleau Jan 2016

Growth Control Of Oxygen Stoichiometry In Homoepitaxial Srtio3 Films By Pulsed Laser Epitaxy In High Vacuum, Ho Nyung Lee, Sung S. Ambrose Seo, Woo Seok Choi, Christopher M. Rouleau

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

In many transition metal oxides, oxygen stoichiometry is one of the most critical parameters that plays a key role in determining the structural, physical, optical, and electrochemical properties of the material. However, controlling the growth to obtain high quality single crystal films having the right oxygen stoichiometry, especially in a high vacuum environment, has been viewed as a challenge. In this work, we show that, through proper control of the plume kinetic energy, stoichiometric crystalline films can be synthesized without generating oxygen defects even in high vacuum. We use a model homoepitaxial system of SrTiO3 (STO) thin films on …

To exploit the full potential of radio measurements of cosmic-ray air showers at MHz frequencies, a detector timing synchronization within 1 ns is needed. Large distributed radio detector arrays such as the Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA) rely on timing via the Global Positioning System (GPS) for the synchronization of individual detector station clocks. Unfortunately, GPS timing is expected to have an accuracy no better than about 5 ns. In practice, in particular in AERA, the GPS clocks exhibit drifts on the order of tens of ns. We developed a technique to correct for the GPS drifts, and an independent …

Weak Values Are Quantum: You Can Bet On It, Alessandro Romito, Andrew N. Jordan, Yakir Aharonov, Yuval Gefen

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The outcome of a weak quantum measurement conditioned to a subsequent post-selection (a weak value protocol) can assume peculiar values. These results cannot be explained in terms of conditional probabilistic outcomes of projective measurements. However, a classical model has been recently put forward that can reproduce peculiar expectation values, reminiscent of weak values. This led the authors of that work to claim that weak values have an entirely classical explanation. Here we discuss what is quantum about weak values with the help of a simple model based on basic quantum mechanics. We first demonstrate how a classical theory can indeed …

Microbial Pretreatment Of Waste For Anaerobic Digestion, Braden Myers, Jaron Hansen Jan 2016

Microbial Pretreatment Of Waste For Anaerobic Digestion, Braden Myers, Jaron Hansen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The aim of this research was to demonstrate Caldicellulosiruptor bescii is a feasible microbial pretreatment of lignocellulose for enhanced production of biogas when coupled with secondary anaerobic digestion. Before anaerobic digestion of waste can reach its maximum energy production potential, economically sound methods for pretreatments that allow increased digestion of waste materials must be developed. Many types of waste cannot be broken down sufficiently by anaerobic digestion alone. Overcoming this hurdle through successful feedstock pretreatment would unlock a vast potential supply of renewable energy feedstock materials.

Measuring Frequency Noise For Use In Preventing Mode Hops In Extended Cavity Diode Lasers, Mckinley Pugh, Dallin Durfee Jan 2016

Measuring Frequency Noise For Use In Preventing Mode Hops In Extended Cavity Diode Lasers, Mckinley Pugh, Dallin Durfee

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Diode lasers are useful in physics because they are relatively cheap and robust, they are available in a number of wavelengths, and they are tunable. However, because diode lasers have large bandwidths compared to atomic resonances, a reflection grating is added outside the laser. This creates the extended cavity in extended cavity diode lasers (ECDLs) and forces the lasers to operate at a narrower line width, one acceptable for use in atomic physics. Unfortunately, because the ECDL has many factors trying to control the wavelength of the laser (e.g. temperature, current, grating angel and position) small changes in the lasers …

Multi-Class Simultaneous Adaptive Segmentation And Quality Control Of Point Cloud Data, Ayman Habib, Yun-Jou Lin Jan 2016

Multi-Class Simultaneous Adaptive Segmentation And Quality Control Of Point Cloud Data, Ayman Habib, Yun-Jou Lin

Lyles School of Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

3D modeling of a given site is an important activity for a wide range of applications including urban planning, as-built mapping of industrial sites, heritage documentation, military simulation, and outdoor/indoor analysis of airflow. Point clouds, which could be either derived from passive or active imaging systems, are an important source for 3D modeling. Such point clouds need to undergo a sequence of data processing steps to derive the necessary information for the 3D modeling process. Segmentation is usually the first step in the data processing chain. This paper presents a region-growing multi-class simultaneous segmentation procedure, where planar, pole-like, and rough …

Reconciling Ag-Star Formation, The Soltan Argument, And Meier's Paradox, David Garofalo, Matthew I. Kim, Damian J. Christian, Emily Hollingworth

Faculty Articles

We provide a theoretical context for understanding the recent work of Kalfountzou et al. showing that star formation is enhanced at lower optical luminosity in radio-loud quasars. Our proposal for coupling the assumption of collimated FRII quasar-jet-induced star formation with lower accretion optical luminosity also explains the observed jet power peak in active galaxies at higher redshift compared to the peak in accretion power, doing so in a way that predicts the existence of a family of radio-quiet active galactic nuclei associated with rapidly spinning supermassive black holes at low redshift, as mounting observations suggest. The relevance of this work …

Consequences Of Secondary Calibrations On Divergence Time Estimates, John J. Schenk Jan 2016

Consequences Of Secondary Calibrations On Divergence Time Estimates, John J. Schenk

Biology: Faculty Publications

Secondary calibrations (calibrations based on the results of previous molecular dating studies) are commonly applied in divergence time analyses in groups that lack fossil data; however, the consequences of applying secondary calibrations in a relaxed-clock approach are not fully understood. I tested whether applying the posterior estimate from a primary study as a prior distribution in a secondary study results in consistent age and uncertainty estimates. I compared age estimates from simulations with 100 randomly replicated secondary trees. On average, the 95% credible intervals of node ages for secondary estimates were significantly younger and narrower than primary estimates. The primary …

Comparative Analysis Of Sn 2012dn Optical Spectra:Days −14 To +114, J. T. Parrent, D. A. Howell, R. A. Fesen, S. Parker

Dartmouth Scholarship

SN 2012dn is a super-Chandrasekhar mass candidate in a purportedly normal spiral (SAcd) galaxy, and poses a challenge for theories of type Ia supernova diversity. Here we utilize the fast and highly parametrized spectrum synthesis tool, SYNAPPS, to estimate relative expansion velocities of species inferred from optical spectra obtained with six facilities. As with previous studies of normal SN Ia, we find that both unburned carbon and intermediate-mass elements are spatially coincident within the ejecta near and below 14 000 km s−1. Although the upper limit on SN 2012dn's peak luminosity is comparable to some of the most …

The Promise And Potential Of Two-Way Immersion In Catholic Schools, Luis R. Fraga Jan 2016

The Promise And Potential Of Two-Way Immersion In Catholic Schools, Luis R. Fraga

Journal of Catholic Education

Two-Way Immersion (TWI) is a method of instruction designed to facilitate the learning of a second language by non-native speakers. Unlike traditional methods of teaching a second language, TWI is grounded in the equal presence, respect, and value of the two languages and their related cultures. Moreover, the goal of TWI is the building of communities of intercultural competence and appreciation. In this essay, I argue that TWI is especially appropriate for many Catholic schools given the current and growing presence of Latino Catholics. However, the establishment and maintenance of an effective TWI school is not a panacea for efforts …

Latino Students In Catholic Postsecondary Institutions, Frances Contreras Jan 2016

Latino Students In Catholic Postsecondary Institutions, Frances Contreras

Journal of Catholic Education

Catholic educational institutions play an important role in educating Latino high achieving students. For Catholic high schools students, Latinos are more likely to graduate and transition to college immediately following high school. Few studies have examined the outcomes of Latino students who attend Catholic Colleges and Universities and whether the same level of success experienced by Latinos at the secondary level is also a prevalent phenomenon at the postsecondary level. Using secondary data from National Center for Education Data Statistics on high schools, SAT data, and data from IPEDs (Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System), this article explores the college readiness …

Latinos, Education, And The Church: Toward A Culturally Democratic Future, Antonia Darder Jan 2016

Latinos, Education, And The Church: Toward A Culturally Democratic Future, Antonia Darder

Journal of Catholic Education

The article provides a comprehensive critical analysis of key issues that are deeply salient to an examination of the relationship of Latinos, education and the Church. The status of Latinos and their educational participation in the United States is systematically presented through a critical theoretical lens that brings questions of historical, political, and economic inequalities and their consequences to the center of this interpretive interrogation. With this foundational piece in place, the article moves to the concept of cultural democracy as an important philosophical principle in our work to transform the education of Latino children within Catholic schools and beyond. …

The Not So Gentle Push: Behavioral Spillovers And Policy Instruments, Giovanna D’Adda, Valerio Capraro, Massimo Tavoni Jan 2016

The Not So Gentle Push: Behavioral Spillovers And Policy Instruments, Giovanna D’Adda, Valerio Capraro, Massimo Tavoni

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We examine whether spillovers of pro-social behavior depend on how behavioral changes are induced. We conduct a large experiment using economic games, with a Dictator Game (DG) followed by either an identical game or a Prisoner’s Dilemma (PD). We influence initial behavior through widely used policy instruments, either behaviorally informed (default, social norms) or with an economic/regulatory rationale (incentives, regulation). Our results provide evidence of positive spillovers to subsequent economic games (which are not treated), but only for the traditional economic/regulatory interventions and within the same game type. Specifically, inducing higher giving in the first stage leads to subsequent higher …

Electron Heat Flow Due To Magnetic Field Fluctuations, Jeong-Young Ji, Gunyoung Park, Sung Sik Kim, Eric D. Held Jan 2016

Electron Heat Flow Due To Magnetic Field Fluctuations, Jeong-Young Ji, Gunyoung Park, Sung Sik Kim, Eric D. Held

All Physics Faculty Publications

Radial heat transport induced by magnetic field line fluctuations is obtained from the integral parallel heat flow closure for arbitrary collisionality. The parallel heat flow and its radial component are computed for a single harmonic sinusoidal field line perturbation. In the collisional and collisionless limits, averaging the heat flow over an unperturbed surface yields Rechester-Rosenbluth like formulae with quantitative factors. The single harmonic result is generalized to multiple harmonics given a spectrum of small magnetic perturbations. In the collisionless limit, the heat and particle transport relations are also derived. © 2016 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Canonical Models Of Dielectric Response, D. Mark Riffe Jan 2016

Canonical Models Of Dielectric Response, D. Mark Riffe

All Physics Faculty Publications

The interaction of electromagnetic fields with a solid is characterized by several interconnected response functions: the dielectric function ε(ω), index of refraction N(ω), conductivity σ(ω), and optical impedance Z(ω). Here we utilize three canonical models of dielectric response -- the damped harmonic oscillator, Debye polarization response, and the Drude model -- to discuss these four optical response functions. Special emphasis is devoted to the response of a Drude metal. Our main focus is on electromagnetic wave propagation through a material. We also discuss the relaxation of charge fluctuations within the context of the three canonical models of response.

Variable Van Der Waals Radii Derived From A Hybrid Gaussian Charge Distribution Model For Continuum-Solvent Electrostatic Calculations, Renlong Ye, Xuemei Nie, Chung Wong, Xuedong Gong, Yan Wang, Thomas Heine, Baojing Zhou

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

We introduce a hybrid Gaussian charge distribution model (HGM) that partitions the molecular electron density into overlapping spherical atomic domains. The semi-empirical HGM consists of atom-centered spherical Gaussian functions and discrete point charges, which are optimized to reproduce the electrostatic potential on the molecular surface as well as the number of electrons in atom-centered and certain off-atom-centered spherical regions as closely as possible. In contrast, our previous Gaussian charge distribution model [J. Chem. Phys. 129, 014509 (2008)] contained only spherical Gaussian functions and was not required to reproduce the number of electrons in off-atom-centered regions. Variable van der Waals (vdW) …

The Schwarzschild Solution And Timelike Geodesics, Matthew Ross

Physics Capstone Projects

General Relativity is the standard theory of the gravitational interaction. It allows us to cal- culate the motions and interactions of particles in a non-Euclidean space-time. This presentation will present the derivation of the Schwarzschild metric tensor field by finding a solution of the Einstein Equation for a non-rotating, static vacuum. A general form of the metric for a static, spherically symmetric spacetime will be used to calculate the Riemann curvature tensor and sub- sequently the Ricci tensor and Ricci scalar which will then be used to find a vaccum solution to the Einstein Equation. Once the solutions of the …

Some Results On Analysis And Implementation Of Hc-128 Stream Cipher., Shashwat Raizada Dr. Jan 2016

Some Results On Analysis And Implementation Of Hc-128 Stream Cipher., Shashwat Raizada Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The HC-128 stream cipher is a successful entrant in the eStream candidate list (software profile) and is the lighter variant of HC-256 stream cipher. Apart from the analysis by the designer of the cipher (Hongjun Wu) to conjecture the security of this cipher, there are only a few other observations on this cipher despite being the focus of researchers during the three phases of eStream evaluation and later efforts in the community. Till date none of the security claims in favor of HC-128 by the designer could be broken. One may expect HC-128 stream cipher to be popular in commercial …
