Knowledge And Tasks Connecting Elementary, Secondary, And Disciplinary Mathematics, Yvonne Lai Feb 2016

Knowledge And Tasks Connecting Elementary, Secondary, And Disciplinary Mathematics, Yvonne Lai

Discipline-Based Education Research Group Speaker Series

A well-prepared teacher should be able to help her students see mathematics as ideas that develop over time. Mathematics courses designed specifically for prospective secondary teachers aim for prospective teachers to see and find connections across elementary, secondary, and disciplinary mathematics, and beyond that to be able to use those connections in their future teaching. While there is broad agreement with these aims, there is also little consensus around how to carry them out. Two challenges in meeting these aims are identifying content that lends itself to such connections and designing tasks that can be used to engage with that …

Petrologic Comparison Of The Beaver Dam And Mineral Mountains Metamorphic Complexes, Scott Zylstra, Jake Voorhees, Dr. Ron Harris Feb 2016

Petrologic Comparison Of The Beaver Dam And Mineral Mountains Metamorphic Complexes, Scott Zylstra, Jake Voorhees, Dr. Ron Harris

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Utah’s rocks, though incredibly complete in later eons, hold very little information about what was occurring in that area before 700 million years ago. In Southern Utah, only two relatively small exposures of these ancient Precambrian exist, in the west of the Beaver Dam Mountains west of St. George and the west of the Mineral Mountains west of Beaver. Therefore, it is vitally important to study these exposures, as they constitute the only clues to what was happening in Utah 1.7 billion years ago.

Sediment Loads And Transport At Constructed Chutes Along The Missouri River-Upper Hamburg Chute Near Nebraska City, Nebraska, And Kansas Chute Near Peru, Nebraska, Brenda K. Densmore, David L. Rus, Matthew T. Moser, Brent M. Hall, Michael J. Andersen

United States Geological Survey: Water Reports and Publications

The United States Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the United States Army Corps of Engineers, monitored suspended sediment within constructed Missouri River chutes during March through October 2012. Chutes were constructed at selected river bends by the US Army Corps of Engineers to help mitigate aquatic habitat lost through the creation and maintenance of the navigation channel on the Missouri River. The restoration and development of chutes is one method for creating shallow-water habitat within the Missouri River to meet requirements established by the amended 2000 Biological Opinion. Understanding geomorphic channel-evolution processes and sediment transport is important for the …

Reactivity Of Acyclic (Pentadienyl)Iron(1+) Cations With Phosphonate Stabilized Nucleophiles: Application To The Synthesis Of Oxygenated Metabolites Of Carvone, Do W. Lee, Charles Felix Manful, Jayapal Reddy Gone, Yuzhi Ma, William A. Donaldson Feb 2016

Donaldson

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The addition of phosphonate stabilized carbon nucleophiles to acyclic (pentadienyl)iron(1+) cations proceeds predominantly at an internal carbon to afford (pentenediyl)iron complexes. Those complexes bearing an electron withdrawing group at the σ-bound carbon (i.e., 13/14) are stable and isolable, while complexes which do not contain an electron withdrawing group at the σ-bound carbon undergo CO insertion, reductive elimination and conjugation of the double bond to afford cyclohexenone products (21/22). Deprotonation of the phosphonate 13/14 or 21 and reaction with paraformaldehyde affords the olefinated products. This methodology was utilized to prepare oxygenated carvone metabolites (±)-25 and (±)-26.

Upper Mantle Structure Of Central And West Antarctica From Array Analysis Of Rayleigh Wave Phase Velocities, David S. Heeszel, Douglas A. Wiens, Sridhar Anandakrishnan, Richard C. Aster, Ian W.D. Dalziel, Audrey D. Huerta, Andrew A. Nyblade, Terry J. Wilson, J. Paul Winberry

Geological Sciences Faculty Scholarship

The seismic velocity structure of Antarctica is important, both as a constraint on the tectonic history of the continent and for understanding solid Earth interactions with the ice sheet. We use Rayleigh wave array analysis methods applied to teleseismic data from recent temporary broadband seismograph deployments to image the upper mantle structure of central and West Antarctica. Phase velocity maps are determined using a two–plane wave tomography method and are inverted for shear velocity using a Monte Carlo approach to estimate three-dimensional velocity structure. Results illuminate the structural dichotomy between the East Antarctic Craton and West Antarctica, with West Antarctica …

Development Of A Model To Predict Preadolescent Children’S Indoor Pm10 Exposures, Rebecca Bradshaw, James Johnston Feb 2016

Development Of A Model To Predict Preadolescent Children’S Indoor Pm10 Exposures, Rebecca Bradshaw, James Johnston

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Asthma is the most common chronic disease among children worldwide, and the third-ranking cause of hospitalization for children under 15 years of age.(1-2) While the exact causes are unknown, studies show that having a genetic predisposition coupled with early-life allergen exposures increases the likelihood of developing asthma.(3) For inhalation exposure to occur, allergens must be airborne and must have an aerodynamic particle diameter of 10μm or less (PM10). Particles 10μm or less can penetrate to the bronchial region of the lungs. In sensitized individuals, inhaled allergens that reach the bronchi can initiate a hyper-responsive immune reaction, …

Resolving “Mixed” Privacy Signals Untangling The Anchoring And Adjustment In The Presence Of Multiple Signals, Thong Pham, Mark Keith Feb 2016

Resolving “Mixed” Privacy Signals Untangling The Anchoring And Adjustment In The Presence Of Multiple Signals, Thong Pham, Mark Keith

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As the technologies enabling mobile and ubiquitous information rapidly evolve, so do the information privacy risks to consumers (Belanger and Crossler 2011; Pavlou 2011; Smith et al. 2011). Perceived privacy risk has been demonstrated to be a critical factor in both information disclosure intentions (Dinev and Hart 2006; Lowry et al. 2011; Xu et al. 2010) and behaviors (Keith et al. 2013; Lowry et al. 2011; Posey et al. 2010).

Changing The World Of Research As We Know It, Aaron Sainsbury, Thomas Meservy Feb 2016

Changing The World Of Research As We Know It, Aaron Sainsbury, Thomas Meservy

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Research plays a vital role in the advancement of knowledge. In conjunction, feedback through idea exchange, peer reviews, and formal reviews play a vital role in every research project. With the current academic organizations in place, the impact of feedback is not fully realized because of the structure of how and when feedback is received. While collaborative communication among researchers is increasingly more reliant upon technology, there is little focus on the development and implementation of a technologybased collaboration scheme to support and sustain scientific idea exchanges among researchers.

Packet Inspection And Modification For Mobile Devices: Trustbase, Scott Heidbrink, Daniel Zappala Feb 2016

Packet Inspection And Modification For Mobile Devices: Trustbase, Scott Heidbrink, Daniel Zappala

Journal of Undergraduate Research

While there is a long tradition of providing protection against attackers for desktop and laptop devices, there has been less work in the mobile space. A common tool used by antivirus software is to inspect all packets entering or leaving a computer, to check for viruses or other malware. There are currently no generalpurpose tools for Android devices that provide for packet inspection and modification. There are a few tools that allow for packet capturing on mobile devices, but they can only function on “rooted” devices and do not allow modification. Since most users do not “root” their devices, these …

Optically Detected Magnetic Resonance Of Silicon Vacancies In Sic: Predicting Resonance Of Cylindrical Cavities, Kyle Miller, John Colton Feb 2016

Optically Detected Magnetic Resonance Of Silicon Vacancies In Sic: Predicting Resonance Of Cylindrical Cavities, Kyle Miller, John Colton

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Optically Detected Magnetic Resonance is one method of performing Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) on a material. ESR is used to determine the electron spin lifetime of a material, an important parameter for use in quantum computing. Resonant cavities are conducting containers that are frequently used in ESR to create a strong magnetic field near the sample. As such it is valuable to design a resonant cavity and predict its resonant frequency. Cylindrical cavities modified with dielectric resonators (DRs) are viable for such experiments.

Exploring The Weak Mach Reflection Regime, Kevin Leete, Dr. Kent Gee Feb 2016

Exploring The Weak Mach Reflection Regime, Kevin Leete, Dr. Kent Gee

Journal of Undergraduate Research

When a shock wave reflects off a rigid surface with certain combinations of incident shock strength and angle, a Mach reflection can occur. This is when portions of the incident and reflected waves merge to create a stronger shock called a Mach stem that travels parallel to the reflecting surface. This phenomenon has been studied extensively for two extreme cases: large outdoor explosions and small, laboratory experiments of weak shocks. The purpose of this project was to design and execute an outdoor experiment where this phenomenon could be observed by microphones as well as high speed video imaging to detect …

Incorporating Priors For Medical Image Segmentation Using A Genetic Algorithm, Payel Ghosh, Melanie Mitchell, James A. Tanyi, Arthur Y. Hung Feb 2016

Incorporating Priors For Medical Image Segmentation Using A Genetic Algorithm, Payel Ghosh, Melanie Mitchell, James A. Tanyi, Arthur Y. Hung

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Medical image segmentation is typically performed manually by a physician to delineate gross tumor volumes for treatment planning and diagnosis. Manual segmentation is performed by medical experts using prior knowledge of organ shapes and locations but is prone to reader subjectivity and inconsistency. Automating the process is challenging due to poor tissue contrast and ill-defined organ/tissue boundaries in medical images. This paper presents a genetic algorithm for combining representations of learned information such as known shapes, regional properties and relative position of objects into a single framework to perform automated three-dimensional segmentation. The algorithm has been tested for prostate segmentation …

Slow Slip Events And Time-Dependent Variations In Locking Beneath Lower Cook Inlet Of The Alaska-Aleutian Subduction Zone, Shanshan Li, Jeffrey Freymueller, Robert Mccaffrey Feb 2016

Slow Slip Events And Time-Dependent Variations In Locking Beneath Lower Cook Inlet Of The Alaska-Aleutian Subduction Zone, Shanshan Li, Jeffrey Freymueller, Robert Mccaffrey

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

We identify a series of abrupt changes in GPS site velocities in Lower Cook Inlet, Alaska, in late 2004, early 2010, and late 2011. The site motions during each time period are nearly linear. The surface deformations inferred from GPS for pre-2004 and 2010–2011 are similar to each other, as are 2004–2010 and post-2011. We estimate the slip distribution on the Alaska-Aleutian subduction plate interface accounting for upper plate block rotations and interpret this toggling between two deformation patterns as caused by transient slip. We find that by allowing negative slip deficit rates (i.e., creep rates in excess of relative …

Developing Creative Problem Solvers Using Inquiry–Based Instructional Strategies In An Aviation Curriculum, Roy John Caligan

Bollinger-Rosado Teaching & Learning Effectiveness Symposium Proceedings

The aviation industry has a need for innovators and problem solvers. An educator’s role is to develop students with the proper knowledge, skills, and abilities to meet those needs. However, the students must be intrinsically motivated toward these pursuits in order to be effective, and educators should not introduce factors that discourage creativity and inquisitiveness. This theory–oriented paper identifies the specific skills that students should master and offers a model of instruction that encourages creativity through research, along with recommendations for improvements to the curriculum. Finally, the author provides a select bibliography of strategies for implementing inquiry, creativity, and research …

A Concept Diagram For Transient Circuit Analysis Instruction, Thomas Yang Feb 2016

A Concept Diagram For Transient Circuit Analysis Instruction, Thomas Yang

Bollinger-Rosado Teaching & Learning Effectiveness Symposium Proceedings

Transient circuit analysis is a particularly challenging topic in introductory circuit analysis courses. In illustrating the solution of transient analysis problems, many textbooks emphasize the procedure of problem solving. While such focus provides valuable training for students, we believe an in-depth understanding of critical concepts in transient process is crucial and needs to be emphasized in classroom instruction. In this paper, a concept diagram is presented that focuses on three critical time instants for transient analysis. Important concepts for each time instant are clearly presented by this simple diagram, which integrates all relevant concepts in an organized manner. The diagram …
