All Aboard, All Attuned And All Involved: Fostering Learner Engagement And Teamwork With Clickers In An Introductory Computer Science Course At Winthrop University, Patrick Guilbaud, Michael Whitney

Winthrop Conference on Teaching and Learning

Modern education technology tools and learning systems provide the means for faculty to develop courses that offer connected and engaging learning opportunities. However, many courses, particularly those in the sciences and engineering disciplines, are not often designed to encourage collaboration, cooperation and teamwork.

Given the presence of a global and interconnected economy, it is critical for students to interact with classmates who hold diverse perspectives, experiences and opinions. Moreover, research shows that students who have had the opportunity to participate in learning activities with heterogeneous teams --early in their college life-- are more likely to develop lasting relationships with classmates …

Design And Analysis Of A Single-Camera Omnistereo Sensor For Quadrotor Micro Aerial Vehicles (Mavs), Carlos Jaramillo, Roberto G. Valenti, Ling Guo, Jizhong Xiao

Publications and Research

We describe the design and 3D sensing performance of an omnidirectional stereo (omnistereo) vision system applied to Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs). The proposed omnistereo sensor employs a monocular camera that is co-axially aligned with a pair of hyperboloidal mirrors (a vertically-folded catadioptric configuration). We show that this arrangement provides a compact solution for omnidirectional 3D perception while mounted on top of propeller-based MAVs (not capable of large payloads). The theoretical single viewpoint (SVP) constraint helps us derive analytical solutions for the sensor’s projective geometry and generate SVP-compliant panoramic images to compute 3D information from stereo correspondences (in a truly synchronous …

New Flexible Channels For Room Temperature Tunneling Field Effect Transistors, Boyi Hao, Anjana Asthana, Paniz Khanmohammadi, Paul Bergstrom, Douglas R. Banyai, Madhusudan A. Savaikar, John A. Jaszczak, Yoke Khin Yap

Department of Physics Publications

Tunneling field effect transistors (TFETs) have been proposed to overcome the fundamental issues of Si based transistors, such as short channel effect, finite leakage current, and high contact resistance. Unfortunately, most if not all TFETs are operational only at cryogenic temperatures. Here we report that iron (Fe) quantum dots functionalized boron nitride nanotubes (QDs-BNNTs) can be used as the flexible tunneling channels of TFETs at room temperatures. The electrical insulating BNNTs are used as the one-dimensional (1D) substrates to confine the uniform formation of Fe QDs on their surface as the flexible tunneling channel. Consistent semiconductor-like transport behaviors under various …

Water Balance Monitoring For Two Bioretention Gardens In Omaha, Nebraska, 2011–14, Kellan R. Strauch, David L. Rus, Kent E. Holm

United States Geological Survey: Water Reports and Publications

Document abstract

Bioretention gardens are used to help mitigate stormwater runoff in urban settings in an attempt to restore the hydrologic response of the developed land to a natural predevelopment response in which more water is infiltrated rather than routed directly to urban drainage networks. To better understand the performance of bioretention gardens in facilitating infiltration of stormwater in eastern Nebraska, the United States Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Douglas County Environmental Services and the Nebraska Environmental Trust, assessed the water balance of two bioretention gardens located in Omaha, Nebraska by monitoring the amount of stormwater entering and …

Ultrafast Saturation Of Electronic-Resonance-Enhanced Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering And Comparison For Pulse Durations In The Nanosecond To Femtosecond Regime, Anil K. Patnaik, Sukesh Roy, James R. Gord Feb 2016

Ultrafast Saturation Of Electronic-Resonance-Enhanced Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering And Comparison For Pulse Durations In The Nanosecond To Femtosecond Regime, Anil K. Patnaik, Sukesh Roy, James R. Gord

Physics Faculty Publications

The saturation threshold of a probe pulse in an ultrafast electronic-resonance-enhanced (ERE) coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) configuration is calculated. We demonstrate that while the underdamping condition is a sufficient condition for saturation of ERE-CARS with the long-pulse excitations, a transient gain must be achieved to saturate the ERE-CARS signal for the ultrafast probe regime. We identify that the area under the probe pulse can be used as a definitive parameter to determine the criterion for a saturation threshold for ultrafast ERE-CARS. From a simplified analytical solution and a detailed numerical calculation based on density-matrix equations, the saturation threshold of …

New Urjc-1 Material With Remarkable Stability And Acid-Base Catalytic Properties, Pedro Leo, Ferdnando Martinez, Guillermo Calleja, David Briones, Lukasz Wojtas

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Emerging new metal-organic structures with tunable physicochemical properties is an exciting research field for diverse applications. In this work, a novel metal-organic framework Cu(HIT)(DMF)0.5, named URJC-1, with a three-dimensional non-interpenetrated utp topological network, has been synthesized. This material exhibits a microporous structure with unsaturated copper centers and imidazole–tetrazole linkages that provide accessible Lewis acid/base sites. These features make URJC-1 an exceptional candidate for catalytic application in acid and base reactions of interest in fine chemistry. The URJC-1 material also displays a noteworthy thermal and chemical stability in different organic solvents of different polarity and boiling water. Its catalytic …

Determining A Binary Matroid From Its Small Circuits, James Oxley, Charles Semple, Geoff Whittle

Faculty Publications

It is well known that a rank-r matroid M is uniquely determined by its circuits of size at most r. This paper proves that if M is binary and r ≥ 3, then M is uniquely determined by its circuits of size at most r - 1 unless M is a binary spike or a special restriction thereof. In the exceptional cases, M is determined up to isomorphism.

A Note On The Γ-Coefficients Of The Tree Eulerian Polynomial, Rafael S. González D'León Feb 2016

A Note On The Γ-Coefficients Of The Tree Eulerian Polynomial, Rafael S. González D'León

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We consider the generating polynomial of the number of rooted trees on the set {1,2,...,n} counted by the number of descending edges (a parent with a greater label than a child). This polynomial is an extension of the descent generating polynomial of the set of permutations of a totally ordered n-set, known as the Eulerian polynomial. We show how this extension shares some of the properties of the classical one. A classical product formula shows that this polynomial factors completely over the integers. From this product formula it can be concluded that this polynomial has positive coefficients …

Significant Recent Warming Over The Northern Tibetan Plateau From Ice Core Δ18o Records, W. An, S. Hou, W. Zhang, Y. Wang, Y. Liu, Shuang-Ye Wu, H. Pang

Department of Earth, Environment and Sustainability Faculty Publications

Stable oxygen isotopic records in ice cores provide valuable information about past temperature, especially for regions with scarce instrumental measurements. This paper presents the δ18O result of an ice core drilled to bedrock from Mt. Zangser Kangri (ZK), a remote area on the northern Tibetan Plateau (TP). We reconstructed the temperature series for 1951–2008 from the δ18O records. In addition, we combined the ZK δ18O records with those from three other ice cores in the northern TP (Muztagata, Puruogangri, and Geladaindong) to reconstruct a regional temperature history for the period 1951–2002 (RTNTP). The RTNTP …

Targeting Superoxide Dismutase-¬1 In Cancer, Laura Oh, Josh Andersen Feb 2016

Targeting Superoxide Dismutase-¬1 In Cancer, Laura Oh, Josh Andersen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

SOD1 is overexpressed in many cancers such as lung adenocarcinoma, non- small-cell lung cancer, and 70% of primary breast cancers. Traditionally, SOD1 is known as an antioxidant in the human body, but only 1% of SOD1 expressed in cells is necessary to keep superoxide radicals below cytotoxic levels, suggesting that SOD1 may have undiscovered functions. One of the known trademarks of cancer is the Warburg Effect defined by up-regulated glycolysis and down- regulated respiration. It is thought that this unique mode of metabolism promotes cancer cell growth. A recent study demonstrated that SOD1 functions to repress respiration through the casein …

Developing A Microfluidic Lab-On-A-Chip Device To Assess The Correlation Between The Ratio Of H And L Ferritin In Maternal Serum And Preterm Birth, Kaitlyn Brower, Adam Woolley

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Preterm birth is the leading cause of death in children under the age of 51 and is defined by the Centers for Disease Control as birth before 37 weeks gestation.2 It is estimated that 15 million babies are born premature annually and that PTB kills nearly 1 million babies every year. Currently, accurate detection of PTB risk isn’t possible and extrauterine treatments and interventions are insufficient.

Taylor’S Power Law And The Statistical Modelling Of Infectious Disease Surveillance Data, Dg Enki, A Noufaily, P Farrington, P Garthwaite, N Andrews

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Surveillance data collected on several hundred different infectious organisms over 20 years have revealed striking power relationships between their variance and mean in successive time periods. Such patterns are common in ecology, where they are referred to collectively as Taylor's power law. In the paper, these relationships are investigated in detail, with the aim of exploiting them for the descriptive statistical modelling of infectious disease surveillance data. We confirm the existence of variance-to-mean power relationships, with exponent typically between 1 and 2. We investigate skewness-to-mean relationships, which are found broadly to match those expected of Tweedie distributions, and thus confirm …

Off the Lip Conference - Transdisciplinary Approaches to Cognitive Innovation

The promise of cognitive innovation as a collaborative project in the sciences, arts and humanities is that we can approach creativity as a bootstrapping cognitive process in which the energies that shape the poem are necessarily indistinguishable from those that shape the poet. For the purposes of this conference the exploration of the idea of cognitive innovation concerns an understanding of creativity that is not exclusively concerned with conscious human thought and action but also as intrinsic to our cognitive development. As a consequence, we see the possibility for cognitive innovation to provide a theoretical and practical platform from which …

There is increasing global demand for food, bioenergy feedstocks and a wide variety of bio-based products. In response, agriculture has advanced production, but is increasingly depleting soil regulating and supporting ecosystem services. New production systems have emerged, such as no-tillage, that can enhance soil services but may limit yields. Moving forward, agricultural systems must reduce trade-offs between production and soil services. Soil functional zone management (SFZM) is a novel strategy for developing sustainable production systems that attempts to integrate the benefits of conventional, intensive agriculture, and no-tillage. SFZM creates distinct functional zones within crop row and inter-row spaces. By incorporating …

Development Of Rapid Robotic Fish Based On Smart Material Actuators, Tianyuan Zhao, Jasfer Aniban, Adedolapo Awofiranye, Jeremiah Dala

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

The main objective of this project is to build and test a rapid robotic fish with its propulsion system based on smart material actuators, such as Macro Fiber Composites (MFC) and Ionic Polymer Metal Composites (IPMC). These state-of-the-art actuators based on active materials offer several potential advantages for robotic fish applications compared to traditional servo motors. One important benefit is that smart actuators are lightweight and can be embedded directly into the structure of a fish torso or control surface. In addition, they are eco-friendly and are completely green. Our goal is therefore to fabricate a fast fish-like robot swimming …

Helwave: High Efficiency Low Wake Aquatic Vehicle Exterior, Joshua E. Pevitz, Daniel R. Brunson

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

This project seeks to find if it is possible to apply soliton theory to reduce or eliminate surface disturbances that a watercraft produces as it moves. It aimed to do so by developing several unique hull shapes crafted from the principles of soliton theory that were optimized for different sizes and styles of vessel. The solitons used were derived from sets of partial differential equations whose solution has the unique ability to maintain its shape as it propagates. Through a combination of modeling programs and advanced manufacturing methods, students created physical and computer models to test the soliton boat design. …

Lost In Transmission: Romantic Relationships Mediated By Wireless Technologies, Austin Ray Dach, Kimberly Harrelson

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

Some estimate that short-messaging-service (SMS) text messaging will reach 9.4 trillion messages per year by 2016, not including billions of messages sent by other forms of texting, such as MMS and iPhone's iMessage service. Research shows that habitually using methods of instant communication in romantic relationships has changed the way we communicate with our partners. Direct or inferred meanings sent electronically are often misconstrued by the “receiver” of the messages. Societal norms such as Texting and Instant Messaging (on social networking sites such as Facebook) have introduced new stressors to communication. This project will present research to analyze how the …

Impartial Avoidance Games For Generating Finite Groups, Bret J. Benesh, Dana C. Ernst, Nándor Sieben

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We study an impartial avoidance game introduced by Anderson and Harary. The game is played by two players who alternately select previously unselected elements of a finite group. The first player who cannot select an element without making the set of jointly-selected elements into a generating set for the group loses the game. We develop criteria on the maximal subgroups that determine the nim-numbers of these games and use our criteria to study our game for several families of groups, including nilpotent, sporadic, and symmetric groups.
