Examining Perceptions Of Higher Education Faculty Who Teach Online, Tracy Deanne Mcallister Apr 2016

Examining Perceptions Of Higher Education Faculty Who Teach Online, Tracy Deanne Mcallister

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

With the advent of computer-aided technologies and the Internet, students can access courses offered across a broad spectrum of fields and for a variety of degree levels. Institutions of higher learning have recognized the need to keep pace with competing institutions by offering courses online. As colleges and universities continue to meet the demands of students seeking enrollment in online courses, the need for recruiting, hiring, and developing faculty who are trained to teach within an online format continues to increase as well. Quality instruction cannot exist without systems of support to advance and improve faculty (Khan & Chishti, 2012). …

Dynamics Of Discrete And Continuous Spatially Distributed Systems, Yury Sokolov Apr 2016

Dynamics Of Discrete And Continuous Spatially Distributed Systems, Yury Sokolov

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In this dissertation we consider some dynamical systems and their properties. We study the stability of a discrete system, which corresponds to an approximate dynamic programming problem. We investigate phase transition of a process on random graphs and find critical parameters. We analyze the bifurcation and attractor of a system given by generalized Lotka-Volterra equations. In particular:we study the stability of a discrete dynamical system of estimation error, which corresponds to an approximate dynamic programming (ADP) problem via Lyapunov's second method. We prove that the system is uniformly ultimately bounded;we show the necessary conditions for a phase transition in two …

On Saturated Graphs And Combinatorial Games, Ali Dogan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation concerns two types of problems in Extremal Graph Theory. The first type is on the edge spectrum of saturated graphs, while the second one is related to a combinatorial game.In the first chapter we give an overview of the structure of the dissertation, introduce some notation and definitions, and state some results that are repeatedly used for reference. In Chapter 2, we analyze the edge spectrum of star-saturated graphs. In particular, we show that there are star-saturated graphs for any number between the saturation number and the extremal number.Chapter 3 is dedicated to a problem similar to that in …

Applications Of Renewal Theory To Pattern Analysis, Hallie L. Kleiner Apr 2016

Applications Of Renewal Theory To Pattern Analysis, Hallie L. Kleiner

Theses

In this thesis, renewal theory is used to analyze patterns of outcomes for discrete random variables. We start by introducing the concept of a renewal process and by giving some examples. It is then shown that we may obtain the distribution of the number of renewals by time t and compute its expectation, the renewal function. We then proceed to state and illustrate the basic limit theorems for renewal processes and make use of Wald’s equation to give a proof of the Elementary Renewal Theorem. The concept of a delayed renewal process is introduced for the purpose of studying the …

Place-Based Curriculum In The Eighth Grade English Language Arts Classroom, Lindsey K. Cassidy Apr 2016

Place-Based Curriculum In The Eighth Grade English Language Arts Classroom, Lindsey K. Cassidy

Education

In this project, I am investigating the role of place-based education (PBE) in the eighth grade English Language Arts (ELA) classroom and creating a place-based curriculum to use in this class. While PBE has many different definitions and connotations, I define it here as a type of education that takes advantage of the local opportunities to learn in a community and place as a basis for an educational experience. PBE engages student learning by making connections to their community through their work, identifying how their classwork is connected to life, and providing students with an authentic audience for their products …

Multisensory Issues In Students With Autism: A Meta-Synthesis, Michelle Lindsey Chambless Apr 2016

Multisensory Issues In Students With Autism: A Meta-Synthesis, Michelle Lindsey Chambless

Special Education Masters Program Theses

For students with autism sensory processing issues are not an uncommon experience. There are three types of sensory processing categories. They are sensory under responsiveness, sensory over-responsiveness and sensory seeking. These sensory processing difficulties may affect social communication, impact daily life skills, include self-injurious behaviors, and create or add to anxiety already being felt by autistic students. These categories are not mutually exclusive and some students may experience all of these problems while others may only struggle with one or two. There is no one answer for students with autism but it is a collection of effects that form the …

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Chemical contaminants can be introduced into estuarine and marine ecosystems from a variety of sources including wastewater, agriculture and forestry practices, point and non-point discharges, runoff from industrial, municipal, and urban lands, accidental spills, and atmospheric deposition. The diversity of potential sources contributes to the likelihood of contaminated marine waters and sediments and increases the probability of uptake by marine organisms. Despite widespread recognition of direct and indirect pathways for contaminant deposition and organismal exposure in coastal systems, spatial and temporal variability in contaminant composition, deposition, and uptake patterns are still poorly known. We investigated these patterns for a suite …

Time Travel: Scientists And Their Contributions Towards The Discoveries Of The Atom And Atomic Properties, Austin Wright Apr 2016

Time Travel: Scientists And Their Contributions Towards The Discoveries Of The Atom And Atomic Properties, Austin Wright

GS4 Student Scholars Symposium

The discovery of the atom and its associated components and properties paved the way for laying the foundation of chemistry related knowledge. However, the historical discoveries of each individual component are often forgotten or ignored due to the students‰Ûª innate belief of it ‰Û÷being difficult‰Ûª to remember such specific information. To assist students with grasping the properties of the atom and its components, a timeline-assisted chronology of atomic discoveries was created. Our objective is to present the scientists, with their individual contributions to atomic theory, along with the year it was discovered in an interactive manner. Using this timeline, students …

Inhalable Exposure Levels Of Airborne Mold Spores In Rural Georgia Homes, Jacquelyn Lewis, Alli Mcinerney, Errol Spence, Bushra Shah, Atin Adhikari

GS4 Student Scholars Symposium

Exposure to mold is known to cause allergic symptoms. Most molds produce highly allergenic proteins or glycoproteins that can cause hypersensitivity diseases in susceptible hosts. Between 10% and 60% of genetically susceptible persons develop immediate hypersensitivity to mold. The Institute of Medicine report on Damp Indoor Spaces and Health states that there is sufficient evidence to conclude that a causal relationship exists between the presence of mold and upper respiratory tract symptoms, cough, hypersensitivity pneumonitis in susceptible persons, wheeze, and asthma symptoms in sensitized asthmatic persons. To our knowledge, no research has been conducted in rural Georgia to test the …

The Implications Of Shared Sanitation Facilities On The Transmission Of Diarrheal Pathogens Transmitted Via Environmental And Person-To-Person Routes: A Modeling Study, Matthew R. Just Apr 2016

The Implications Of Shared Sanitation Facilities On The Transmission Of Diarrheal Pathogens Transmitted Via Environmental And Person-To-Person Routes: A Modeling Study, Matthew R. Just

GS4 Student Scholars Symposium

In many low and lower-middle income countries, access to sanitation is limited for many individuals. Open defecation contaminates the environment and facilitates the transmission of diarrheal pathogens that are transmitted via the environment. The provision of sanitation facilities that are shared by many individuals, such as shared latrines in slums, are considered by many public health officials as the only short-term solution to this problem, especially in urban slums in Asia and Africa. However, epidemiological evidences have shown that shared sanitation may actually increase the prevalence of diarrheal diseases. One hypothesis that may explain this phenomenon is that many different …

One-To-One Computers In The Classroom: One Size Fits All?, Anna Oliveri, Leah Nillas, Faculty Advisor

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

Students today are considered to be “Digital Natives,” as they are growing up in a technologically rich environment (Prensky, 2010). However, not all children have equal access to technology in and out of the classroom, thus creating the potential for pervasive inequality. This study investigates the role of one-to-one computing implementation in students’ learning experiences and equity and autonomy for students from low-income homes. Four sources of data were collected from twenty-six fifth grade students from primarily low-income homes: field notes, student work samples, student surveys and lesson plans. One-to-one computing enhanced engagement, collaboration, and autonomy and heightened students’ overall …
