Ellsberg Re-Revisited: An Experiment Disentangling Model Uncertainty And Risk Aversion, Loïc Berger, Valentina Bosetti Apr 2016

Ellsberg Re-Revisited: An Experiment Disentangling Model Uncertainty And Risk Aversion, Loïc Berger, Valentina Bosetti

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The results of an experiment extending Ellsberg’s setup demonstrate that attitudes towards ambiguity and compound uncertainty are closely related. However, this association is much stronger when the second layer of uncertainty is subjective than when it is objective. Provided that the compound probabilities are simple enough, we find that most subjects, consisting of both students and policy makers, (1) reduce compound objective probabilities, (2) do not reduce compound subjective probabilities, and (3) are ambiguity non-neutral. By decomposing ambiguity into risk and model uncertainty, and jointly eliciting the attitudes individuals manifest towards these two types of uncertainty, we characterize individuals’ de- …

Computations In Symplectic Geometry, Luis Diogo Apr 2016

Computations In Symplectic Geometry, Luis Diogo

Dynamical Systems Seminar

Symplectic manifolds are a generalization of the notion of phase space in classical mechanics. Their study has received a lot of attention in recent years, and they relate to many other areas in mathematics, including dynamics, algebraic geometry and mathematical physics. We will discuss a central tool in symplectic geometry, called Hamiltonian Floer homology. It is quite useful, but also hard to compute, and we will explain how to calculate it in a relevant class of examples. This is joint work with Sam Lisi.

Infinite Color Urn Models., Debleena Thacker Dr. Apr 2016

Infinite Color Urn Models., Debleena Thacker Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In recent years, there has been a wide variety of work on random reinforcement models of various kinds. Urn models form an important class of random reinforcement models, with numerous applications in engineering and informatics and bioscience. In recent years there have been several works on different kinds of urn models and their generalizations. For occupancy urn models, where one considers recursive addition of balls into finite or infinite number of boxes, there are some works which introduce models with infinitely many colors, typically represented by the boxes. As observed in [51], the earliest mentions of urn models are in the …

The Farmers' Market Experience: Food To Fuel The Body And Soul, Ellery Brett Hinson Apr 2016

The Farmers' Market Experience: Food To Fuel The Body And Soul, Ellery Brett Hinson

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This thesis examines the rise in popularity of the farmers' market through ethnographic research of the Fredericksburg Farmers' market. The farmers' market shopper has become a well known stereotype -- a white, upper-middle class suburbanite who sees it as their moral duty to support their local community and economy through their consumer power. I argue that these shoppers are buying more than just healthy local food. Their interactions with the market and vendors build an experience that feels more authentic and real than the larger capitalist society the market exists within. Through their consumption of the farmers' market and its …

Aging Affects Postural Tracking Of Complex Visual Motion Cues, Haralampos Sotirakis, Anastasia Kyvelidou, L. Mademli, Nicholas Stergiou, Vassilia Hatzitaki

Journal Articles

Postural tracking of visual motion cues improves perception–action coupling in aging, yet the nature of the visual cues to be tracked is critical for the efficacy of such a paradigm. We investigated how well healthy older (72.45 ± 4.72 years) and young (22.98 ± 2.9 years) adults can follow with their gaze and posture horizontally moving visual target cues of different degree of complexity. Participants tracked continuously for 120 s the motion of a visual target (dot) that oscillated in three different patterns: a simple periodic (simulated by a sine), a more complex (simulated by the Lorenz attractor that is …

Recent Progress In Non-Precious Metal Oxygen Reduction Reaction Catalysts With An Encapsulation Structure, Mei-Ling Xiao, Jian-Bing Zhu, Chang-Peng Liu, Jun-Jie Ge, Wei Xing

Journal of Electrochemistry

Platinum-based materials, the state-of-the-art catalysts for fuel cells, suffer from prohibitive costs, limited resources and insufficient durability. Accordingly, tremendous efforts were made in searching for efficient, durable and inexpensive alternatives to precious-metal electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Transition-metals (Fe, Co)/nitrogen co-doped hybrids, heteroatom (N, P, S, F, et al) doped carbons and composites with transition-metals encapsulated in graphitic layers are reported as the most efficient non-precious metal ORR catalysts. Among the various non-precious metal ORR catalysts, transition-metals encased in graphitic layer catalysts are a novel type of catalysts for ORR with high activity and durability, and thus, the …

Dynamic Simulation Of Oxygen Reduction Reaction In Pt/C Electrode For Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells, Shang Li, Fen Zhou, Lei Chen, Mu Pan

Journal of Electrochemistry

It is an urgent need to reduce the Pt loading in electrode for practical fuel cell applications worldwide. Herein, we theoretically investigate the oxygen distribution, generated current, and minimum Pt loading of Pt/C electrode for practical applications based on kinetic model of oxygen reduction reaction. The results indicate that with increasing electrode effective thickness to 40 mm, serious concentration polarization is expected for Pt/C electrode. To generate a power density of 1.4 W⋅cm-2 (2.1A⋅cm-2@0.67 V) for fuel cell, the cathode catalyst layer thickness in PEMFC should be as thin as 3 mm. The minimum Pt loading will …

Multi-Scaled Carbon Supported Platinum As A Stable Electrocatalyst For Oxygen Reduction Reaction, Yu-Ping Li, Lu-Hua Jiang, Su-Li Wang, Gong-Quan Sun

Journal of Electrochemistry

The stability of carbon supports is essential for electrocatalysts of fuel cells. Herein, the mesoporous carbon with the high graphitic degree (highly graphitic mesoporous carbon, HGMC) was synthesized by using resorcinol as the carbon precursor, SiO2 as the templates and urea as the reducing agent. The as-prepared HGMC was characterized by XRD, Raman spectroscopy, TEM, N2 adsorption. The stability of HGMC was evaluated by mimicking the start-up/shut-down conditions of fuel cells in a three-electrode system referring to the NREL standard. The obtained HGMC is of moderate surface area (187.4 m2•g-1) and is chemically stable under …

Rambling Between "Zhong Yong" And "Catalysis", Zi-Dong Wei Apr 2016

Rambling Between "Zhong Yong" And "Catalysis", Zi-Dong Wei

Journal of Electrochemistry

“Zhong Yong” represents a traditional Chinese wisdom, which was first proposed by Confucius and continuously richened by his followers. “Zhong Yong” pursues the balances among all kinds of contradictions, and insists that neither “too much” nor “not enough” is good. For a successful catalyst, on which the adsorption of reactants must be not so strong and not so weak either. On this point of view, there are the same pursuits for “Zhong Yong” and catalysis. In this paper, the author starts his story with a conversation between Confucius and his student, followed by 3 interesting stories happening in the ancient …

Design And Separation Mechanism On Separator For Pea Embryo Skin By Centrifugation, Dong Huanjun, Li Jiapeng, Sun Chuanzhu

Food and Machinery

A centrifugal pea embryo skin separator was designed, and its separation mechanism was also analyzed. The embryo skin did the circular motion under the action of the friction force when it entered the high-speed rotating disk and was thrown out by overcoming the friction force.Due to the different apparent density between the bean embryo and skin, the larger apparent density of the bean embryo was throwninto the outside received barrel, and the smaller apparent density of the bean skin was fallen into the inside received barrel. So chang the height of the received barrel relative to the separation disc can …

The Ko-Lee Key Exchange Protocol With Generalized Dihedral Groups, Christopher Lloyd Apr 2016

The Ko-Lee Key Exchange Protocol With Generalized Dihedral Groups, Christopher Lloyd

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Given an arbitrary abelian group A, one may form the generalized dihedral group D(A). As D(A) is usually non-abelian, this makes it a possible candidate for use with certain non-commutative key exchange protocols. Specifically, we examine the security of using D(A) with the Ko-Lee key exchange protocol. An appropriate presentation for D(A) is developed alongside methods for computing within the group in the context of the Ko-Lee protocol. Lastly we show that for such groups Ko-Lee is susceptible to a polynomial time attack.
