The Influence Of Dissolved Organic Matter (Dom) On Sodium Regulation And Nitrogenous Waste Excretion In The Zebrafish (Danio Rerio), Hassan A. Al-Reasi, Scott D. Smith, Chris M. Wood

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is both ubiquitous and diverse in composition in natural waters, but its effects on the branchial physiology of aquatic organisms have received little attention relative to other variables (e.g. pH, hardness, salinity, alkalinity). Here, we investigated the effects of four chemically distinct DOM isolates (three natural, one commercial, ranging from autochthonous to highly allochthonous, all at ∼6 mg C l−1) on the physiology of gill ionoregulation and nitrogenous waste excretion in zebrafish acclimated to either circumneutral (7.0–8.0) or acidic pH (5.0). Overall, lower pH tended to increase net branchial ammonia excretion, net K+ …

Beyond The Process God: A Defense Of The Classical Divine Attributes, Steven J. Young Apr 2016

Beyond The Process God: A Defense Of The Classical Divine Attributes, Steven J. Young

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Because of the work of process philosophers Alfred North Whitehead and Charles Hartshorne, a view of God has emerged as being in a constant state of flux. The power and knowledge of the process God are much more restricted than the power and knowledge of the classical God, but such diminutions supposedly safeguard divine goodness from tyrannical implications. In this paper, I defend the classical divine attributes against process philosophers. More specifically, I argue that God’s omnipotence does not diminish divine goodness and that a deity with such restricted power would not function as a proper object of worship. In …

Ubisol-Q10 Prevents Glutamate-Induced Cell Death By Blocking Mitochondrial Fragmentation And Permeability Transition Pore Opening, Santosh Kumari, Suresh L. Mehta, Gaolin Z. Milledge, Xinyu Huang, P Andy Li

Faculty Publications

Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress are the major events that lead to the formation of mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP) during glutamate-induced cytotoxicity and cell death. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) has widely been used for the treatment of mitochondrial disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. Comparing to traditional lipid-soluble CoQ10, water soluble CoQ10 (Ubisol-Q10) has high intracellular and intra-mitochondrial distribution. The aims of the present study are to determine the neuroprotective effects of Ubisol-Q10 on glutamate-induced cell death and to explore its functional mechanisms. HT22 neuronal cells were exposed to glutamate. Cell viability was measured and mitochondrial fragmentation was assessed by mitochondrial imaging. …

A Comparison Of Methods To Fit A Model To Simultaneous Time Series, Victoria Marie Moore Apr 2016

A Comparison Of Methods To Fit A Model To Simultaneous Time Series, Victoria Marie Moore

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This research project determines which methods are the most effective for finding a best fit model for simultaneous time series. The type of model used was an Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model. Two distinct methods were used when determining what order to assign to the ARIMA model: 1.) using the floor of the average number of autoregressive and moving average terms, and 2.) using the ceiling of the average number of autoregressive and moving average terms. After fitting the model, the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) value for each method measured the goodness of fit to compare to fitting separate …

High-Elevation Equatorial Catapult-Launched Rbcc Ssto Spaceplane For Economic Manned Access To Leo, Nihad E. Daidzic Apr 2016

High-Elevation Equatorial Catapult-Launched Rbcc Ssto Spaceplane For Economic Manned Access To Leo, Nihad E. Daidzic

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

A conceptual and feasibility study of an RBCC SSTO catapult-launched reusable strap-on parallel-boosted gliding-reentry lifting-body spaceplane for economic manned short-duration 300-kg payload LEO access is presented and discussed. One or more high-elevation equatorial spaceports are proposed each having magnetic-levitation catapult-launch mechanisms for subsonic to supersonic launches, adjacent paved runways, and on site facilitates to produce cryogenic propellants. High-elevation equatorial launch sites provide less dense atmosphere, less distance to LEO, and the possibility to launch into any orbital plane. The launch window for zero-inclination direct equatorial orbits requiring minimum specific energy and providing maximum specific payload capability of any existing launch …

The Value Of Long-Term Stream Invertebrate Data Collected By Citizen Scientists, Patrick M. Edwards Apr 2016

The Value Of Long-Term Stream Invertebrate Data Collected By Citizen Scientists, Patrick M. Edwards

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose of this investigation was to systematically examine the variability associated with temporally-oriented invertebrate data collected by citizen scientists and consider the value of such data for use in stream management. Variability in invertebrate data was estimated for three sources of variation: sampling, within-reach spatial and long-term temporal. Long-term temporal data were also evaluated using ordinations and an Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI). Through two separate investigations over an 11-year study period, participants collected more than 400 within-reach samples during 44 sampling events at three streams in the western United States. Within-reach invertebrate abundance coefficient of variation (CV) ranged …

The Near And Far Transfer Effects Of Multimedia Cognitive Training, Alison M. Mcginnis Apr 2016

The Near And Far Transfer Effects Of Multimedia Cognitive Training, Alison M. Mcginnis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this study was to determine the degree to which “brain games,” such as Lumosity, have an effect on the young adult population and their capabilities of near and far transfer. Previous research on this topic has displayed both positive and negative results, with some research suggesting that training has increased subjects’ cognitive abilities and showed signs of transfer, with other results showing no increase in cognitive ability for training. Participants for this study were 26 undergraduates. The study entailed an experimental group that played Lumosity, an active control group that played Bejeweled, and a passive control group …

Standardized Tests And Gpa As Predictors Of Academic Success Of Physical Therapist Assistant Students Enrolled In Programs At Tennessee Board Of Regents Community Colleges, Patricia Jane Easley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Physical Therapist Assistant programs have more applicants than available seats, making them highly competitive programs to gain admission into. The community colleges that offer these programs are facing unprecedented challenges including the Complete College Agenda, outcomes-based funding, open-enrollment policies and high attrition rates. Given these conditions, a trend is emerging for program directors to institute some sort of standardized testing in order to select applicants whom the programs are most likely to retain and who will ultimately be successful on the licensure exam. This study examines the predictive validity of four standardized test, the Nelson Denny Reading Assessment (NDRA), the …

Developmental Phenomenology: Epistemic Grounding, Infant Imitation, And Pairing, Stefano Giuseppe Vincini Mr. Apr 2016

Developmental Phenomenology: Epistemic Grounding, Infant Imitation, And Pairing, Stefano Giuseppe Vincini Mr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The present dissertation is comprised of three chapters. While the first chapter confines itself to Husserlian phenomenology, the other two pull together phenomenology and cognitive science, especially developmental psychology. Each chapter is an autonomous paper. However, the second and the third chapters are clearly connected. The claim defended in the second chapter figures as a premise in the third. In the first chapter, I argue that the phenomenological reduction makes possible a viable solution to the epistemological problem of whether the belief in the world's existence is justified. The chapter includes a relatively long exegetical session aimed at demonstrating that the …

A search is performed for heavy Majorana neutrinos (N) decaying into a W boson and a lepton using the CMS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. A signature of two jets and either two same sign electrons or a same sign electron-muon pair is searched for using 19.7 fb-1 of data collected during 2012 in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8TeV. The data are found to be consistent with the expected standard model (SM) background and, in the context of a Type-1 seesaw mechanism, upper limits are set on the cross section times branching fraction for production of …

Geometric Energies For Haptic Assembly, Morad Behandish Apr 2016

Geometric Energies For Haptic Assembly, Morad Behandish

Master's Theses

Haptic-assisted virtual assembly and prototyping has seen significant attention over the past two decades. However, in spite of the appealing prospects, the adoption has been slower than expected. Putting hardware limitations aside, the main roadblocks faced in software development can be traced to the lack of effective and efficient computational models. Such models must 1) accommodate the inherent geometric complexities faced when assembling objects of arbitrary shape; and 2) conform to the computation time limitation imposed by the frame rate requirements---namely, 1 kHz for haptic feedback compared to the more manageable 30-60 Hz for graphic rendering. The fulfillment of these …

Stem Education In The United States And Singapore, Elizabeth Worsham

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

One of the hottest topics over the past several years has been science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. The United States is lagging behind in the STEM education rankings as compared to its counterparts in Europe and Asia, including Singapore, ranked second overall in math and science based on the Program of International Student Assessment. Even as such a small country, Singapore has one of the best education systems in the world, one of the busiest ports, and is a leader in the science and technology market. One factor of this is the family life and the culture that …

Dusty Plasma Chamber, Megan Mark Apr 2016

Dusty Plasma Chamber, Megan Mark

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

Perfect plasma environments rarely occur in the natural world; instead, plasmas are often mixed with neutral particles and other trace elements, giving it the name of dusty plasma. Dusty plasma physics is a subject that is being researched extensively in the fields of space science, astrophysics, semiconductors, nuclear fusion, nanotechnology, and crystal physics.

From research conducted, dusty plasma chambers are possible. A major dusty plasma chamber, that can be used for reference, is the Naval Research Lab's DUPLEX chamber. This chamber creates a dusty plasma within a clear chamber, in which all experiments can be easily observed. A dusty plasma …
