Investigating Open Access Attitudes By Discipline At Mississippi State University, Nickoal Eichmann-Kalwara, Amanda Clay Powers

Institutional Repository Day

In educating ourselves about Open Access (OA) issues, we found that attitudes vary dramatically by discipline. To provide relevant educational programming on OA, we developed an Open Access Assessment Tool (based on a UMN Environmental Scan) for library liaisons to investigate discipline-level investment in and attitudes towards OA. This workshop will demonstrate the use of this three-step process to review top journals, repositories, associations and department-level sentiment toward OA.

Lipid Content And Biomass Analysis In Autotrophic And Heterotrophic Algal Species, Addie M. Lauder, Daniel P. Jones, Thomas E. Walker, Todd Allen

Montview Journal of Research & Scholarship

Biofuels are a form of renewable energy derived from living matter, typically plants. The push for biofuels began in order to decrease the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) released into the atmosphere, as biofuels are essentially carbon neutral. The idea is the same amount of CO2 the plants took in to perform photosynthesis will then be released in the burning of the biofuels. Algae is an excellent source of biofuels because it grows quickly and is versatile in terms of the type of fuel it can produce. The two most common mechanisms for algae growth are heterotrophic or photoautotrophic. Heterotrophically …

Electron And Hole Drift Mobility Measurements On Methylammonium Lead Iodide Perovskite Solar Cells, Brian Maynard, Qi Long, Eric A. Schiff, Mengjin Yang, Kai Zhu, Ranjith Kottokkaran, Hisham Abbas, Vikram L. Dalal Apr 2016

Electron And Hole Drift Mobility Measurements On Methylammonium Lead Iodide Perovskite Solar Cells, Brian Maynard, Qi Long, Eric A. Schiff, Mengjin Yang, Kai Zhu, Ranjith Kottokkaran, Hisham Abbas, Vikram L. Dalal

Physics - All Scholarship

We report nanosecond domain time-of-flight measurements of electron and hole photocarriers in methylammonium lead iodide perovskite solar cells. The mobilities ranged from 0.06 to 1.4 cm2/Vs at room temperature, but there is little systematic difference between the two carriers. We also find that the drift mobilities are dispersive (time-dependent). The dispersion parameters are in the range of 0.4–0.7, and they imply that terahertz domain mobilities will be much larger than nanosecond domain mobilities. The temperature-dependences of the dispersion parameters are consistent with confinement of electron and hole transport to fractal-like spatial networks within nanoseconds of their photogeneration.

Methods For Dealing With Death And Missing Data, And For Standardizing Different Health Variables In Longitudinal Datasets: The Cardiovascular Health Study, Paula Diehr

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Longitudinal studies of older adults usually need to account for deaths and missing data. The study databases often include multiple health-related variables, whose trends over time are hard to compare because they were measured on different scales. Here we present a unified approach to these three problems that was developed and used in the Cardiovascular Health Study. Data were first transformed to a new scale that had integer/ratio properties, and on which “dead” logically takes the value zero. Missing data were then imputed on this new scale, using each person’s own data over time. Imputation could thus be informed by …

Sweeney Todd, Jay Cranford, Michelle Crouch Apr 2016

Sweeney Todd, Jay Cranford, Michelle Crouch

2010-2019: All Shows

Sweeney Todd, an unjustly exiled barber, returns to 19th century London seeking vengeance against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. The road to revenge leads Todd to Mrs. Lovett, a resourceful proprietress of a failing pie shop, above which he opens a new barber practice. Mrs. Lovett's luck sharply shifts when Todd's thirst for blood inspires the integration of an ingredient into her meat pies that has the people of London lining up, and the carnage has only just begun!

Horseshoe crabs are xiphosuran chelicerates, the sister groupto arachnids. As such, they are important for understandingthemost recent common ancestor of Euchelicerata and the evolution and diversification of Arthropoda. Limulus polyphemus is the most investigated of the four extant species of horseshoe crabs, and the structure and function of its visual system have long been a major focus of studies critical for understanding the evolution of visual systems in arthropods. Likewise, studies of genes encoding Limulus opsins, the protein component of the visual pigments, are critical for understanding opsin evolution and diversification among chelicerates, where knowledge of opsins is limited, and …

This paper reports on a collaborative exercise designed to generate a coherent agenda for research on mathematical cognition. Following an established method, the exercise brought together 16 mathematical cognition researchers from across the fields of mathematics education, psychology and neuroscience. These participants engaged in a process in which they generated an initial list of research questions with the potential to significantly advance understanding of mathematical cognition, winnowed this list to a smaller set of priority questions, and refined the eventual questions to meet criteria related to clarity, specificity and practicability. The resulting list comprises 26 questions divided into six broad …

Completing Partial Latin Squares With One Nonempty Row, Column, And Symbol, Jaromy Kuhl, Michael W. Schroeder Apr 2016

Completing Partial Latin Squares With One Nonempty Row, Column, And Symbol, Jaromy Kuhl, Michael W. Schroeder

Mathematics Faculty Research

Let r,c,s ∈{1,2,…,n} and let PP be a partial latin square of order n in which each nonempty cell lies in row r, column c, or contains symbol s. We show that if n ∉ {3, 4, 5} and row r, column c, and symbol s can be completed in P, then a completion of P exists. As a consequence, this proves a conjecture made by Casselgren and Häggkvist. Furthermore, we show exactly when row r, column c, and symbol s can be completed.

Systematic Patterning Of Sediments In French Polynesian Coral Reef Systems, Andrew Calhoun Apr 2016

Systematic Patterning Of Sediments In French Polynesian Coral Reef Systems, Andrew Calhoun

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Through a discipline termed “comparative sedimentology”, modern carbonate depositional environments have been used extensively as analogs to aid in the interpretation of equivalent fossil systems. Using field samples, GIS and remote sensing data for three isolated carbonate platforms in the Pacific, this thesis seeks to examine relationships between grain texture and grain type and their environment of deposition. The motivation is to highlight relationships that have the potential to better understand facies relations on carbonate platforms, and thereby reduce uncertainty and increase accuracy of subsurface exploration. The results of this study show that on Raivavae, Tubuai, and Bora Bora: French …

The Effectiveness Of Manipulatives On Fractions When Teaching 2nd Graders, Margaret C. Neubig Apr 2016

The Effectiveness Of Manipulatives On Fractions When Teaching 2nd Graders, Margaret C. Neubig

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Studies show that manipulatives help students grasp concepts that are abstract because it gives them a concrete idea of the concept, (Jao, 2013). Manipulatives are defined as, "a mathematics manipulative material is an object that can be handled by an individual in a sensory manner during which conscious and unconscious mathematical thinking will be fostered" (Swann & Marshall, 2010, p. 14). However, there is a dearth of research on the effectiveness of manipulatives. The research on manipulatives studies mainly upper elementary and middle school students. Also, the majority of the research is made up of teacher's observations instead of quantitative …

Ph Dependence Of The Spectral Distribution Of Hydrogen Peroxide Quantum Yields, Juliana R. Laszakovits Apr 2016

Ph Dependence Of The Spectral Distribution Of Hydrogen Peroxide Quantum Yields, Juliana R. Laszakovits

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Dissolved natural organic matter (DOM) is an important natural photosensitizer, which produces a variety of reactive oxygen species including singlet oxygen, hydroxyl radical, superoxide (O2-) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). H2O2 is formed primarily through the dismutation of O2-. Previous work has suggested that neither singlet oxygen nor excited triplet states of DOM are responsible for H2O2 production. Rather, reducing DOM intermediates likely form O2-, which in turn produce H2O2. One such intermediate may be a charge-separated DOM species (DOM+/-) formed by charge transfer (CT) relaxation of excited singlet states. In the CT model, the electron transfer is believed to occur …

Synthesis Of The Stereoismomers Of Dehp And Mehp From Kinetically Resolved 2-Ethyl-1-Hexanol, Lonnie Alexander Harris

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is a known chiral persistent organic pollutant found in many different consumer products, and the toxicities of its stereoisomers and their metabolites are not well known. To determine their adverse health effects, each enantiomer has to be synthesized. Using lipase PS from Burkholderia cepacia in dichloromethane at 0˚C for 48 hours, 2-ethyl-1-hexyl acetate was obtained in 55% yield (75:25 e.r.), while (R)-2-ethyl-1-hexanol (1) was obtained in 29% yield (96:4 e.r.). The acetate was then hydrolyzed to recover the (S) enriched alcohol (82% yield). The enriched alcohol was acylated a second time to yield (S)-(1) in 39% yield …

Dahlian Democracy As A Hobbesian State And The Legitimacy Of The U.S., Edward Harold Scheirer Apr 2016

Dahlian Democracy As A Hobbesian State And The Legitimacy Of The U.S., Edward Harold Scheirer

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

I reveal the Hobbesian undercurrents of Robert Dahl's political theory then apply his theory in an analysis of modern U.S. democracy compared to an analysis of John Locke's political theory of the same. I reveal that neither explain U.S. democratic legitimacy very well, but that Hobbe's political theory does based off of an objective definition.

Analysis Of The Phytoremediation Potential Of A Chrysopogon Grass And Pteris Fern In Virginia Soils Affected By Acid Mine Drainage, Maura Slocum

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Pollution from the mining industry is a historic and global environmental issue. The remediation of resulting acid and heavy metal contamination from outdated mining practices is often costly and difficult. Contamination at mine sites can result from acid mine drainage (AMD) and the disruption of underlying geologic formations, as well as improper disposal of mine tailings and other wastes. Phytoremediation, which is the use of plants to treat soil contamination, is an emerging method of reclaiming areas contaminated by toxic heavy metals and AMD. The ecosystem of Contrary Creek, a tributary of Lake Anna in Louisa County, Virginia, has been …

Hydrogeological Conceptual Model Of La Villa River Watershed, Republic Of Panama, Maria G. Castrellon Romero Apr 2016

Hydrogeological Conceptual Model Of La Villa River Watershed, Republic Of Panama, Maria G. Castrellon Romero

Honors Scholar Theses

Groundwater in Panama is a valuable and poorly understood resource. Its exploitation has increased 75% in the past decade, reaching a total value of 700,000 m3/day or 185 million gallons per day (MGD). Climate change has caused a lengthening of the dry season, which has reduced precipitation and streamflow, resulting in surface water scarcity during this period. Nevertheless, it has not been possible to determine the extent to which groundwater sources have been affected by these factors since systematic monitoring of groundwater levels has not been implemented in Panama. With support from National Institution of Drinking Water Supply …

H-Bonding And Stacking Interactions Between Chloroquine And Temozolomide, Okuma Emile Kasende, Vincent De Paul Nzuwah-Nziko, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The interactions between temozolomide and chloroquine were examined via Dispersion-Corrected Density Functional Theory and MP2 methods. Chloroquine was considered in both its lowest energy structure and in a local minimum where its aromatic system and secondary amine group are free to interact directly with temozolomide. The accessibility of these two components to intermolecular interaction makes the lowest energy dimer of this local monomer minimum competitive in total energy with that involving chloroquine’s most stable monomer geometry. In either case, the most stable heterodimer places the aromatic ring systems of the two molecules parallel and directly above one another in a …
