Journal of Electrochemistry

In pursuit of more efficient and stable electrochemical energy storage materials, composite materials consisting of metal oxides and graphene oxide have garnered significant attention due to their unique structures and exceptional properties. Graphene oxide (GO), a two-dimensional material with an extremely high specific surface area and excellent conductivity, offers new possibilities for enhancing the electrochemical performance of metal oxides. In this work, we synthesized metal- organic framework (MOF) and GO composites by regulating the amount of GO, and successfully prepared composites of metal oxides supported by nitrogen-doped carbon frameworks and GO through a simple one-step calcination process. Based on the …

Urban Landscape Recovery And Lulc Analysis: A Deep Learning Approach To Post-Extreme Rainfall Impacts In Dubai, Xin Hong Jul 2025

Urban Landscape Recovery And Lulc Analysis: A Deep Learning Approach To Post-Extreme Rainfall Impacts In Dubai, Xin Hong

All Works

From April 14 to 18, 2024, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) experienced its heaviest rainfall in 75 years, resulting in widespread flooding across multiple emirates, including Dubai. This study utilizes high-resolution PlanetScope imagery and a U-Net deep learning model to assess the flood impact and analyze post-rainfall recovery patterns in Dubai’s urban landscape. By integrating Sentinel-2derived land use and land cover (LULC) data to refine the training dataset, a high-accuracy U-Net model was developed through transfer learning that effectively classified pre- and post-rainfall LULC. Post-rainfall LULC change detections indicate that 23.8 km2 of land was flooded, which is equivalent …

Impact Of Late Universe Constraints On Early Universe Measurements Of Hubble, Garrett D. Suggs Jul 2025

Impact Of Late Universe Constraints On Early Universe Measurements Of Hubble, Garrett D. Suggs

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Early universe measurements of the Hubble constant usually find the best-fit value for H0 given a specific data set and a particular cosmological model. Planck’s all-sky survey of the Cosmic Microwave Background is a common choice for this data, and is often supplemented with additional constraints from other measurements of cosmological phenomena. For example, the SH0ES collaboration’s measurement of H0 from local type Ia supernovae is a common constraint to include, in the hope of reconciling the tension between late and early universe measurements. We attempt to quantify the effect of this constraint on early universe measurements of …

Secure Frameworks For User Motion Data In Virtual Reality, Jayasri Sai Nikitha Guthula Jul 2025

Secure Frameworks For User Motion Data In Virtual Reality, Jayasri Sai Nikitha Guthula

Theses and Dissertations

Virtual Reality is an innovative technology transforming industries such as gaming, healthcare, and remote collaboration. The increasing deployment of these systems results in the continuous collection of telemetry data, including motion patterns, hand gestures, and spatial interactions. This data is valuable for enhancing user experiences and optimizing system performance. However, it also introduces significant privacy risks. Unlike traditional digital footprints, motion data captures fine-grained physical behaviors that can be linked to individual users, making anonymization ineffective in preventing re-identification.This research introduces secure frameworks for user motion data in virtual reality, each proposed framework addressing privacy preservation from a different angle. …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Over the last decade, the number of studies in the field of magnetic micro robots has significantly increased due to expectations of performing microsurgery, drug delivery, and similar medical procedures. Magnetic micro robots have advantages over other types of micro robots in terms of having independent designs for rotor and stator structures. Magnetic micro robots can be controlled by magnetic fields and can be programmed to move in certain directions and to perform various functions. This paper implements the computer-aided real-time control of a single-arm micro-pendulum structure to (eventually) perform cell manipulation tasks. The mechanical structure, mathematical model, control circuit …

A Novel Microdosimetry-Based Formalism For Cell Survival Modelling Applicable To Hypofractionated Radiotherapy, Oleg N Vassiliev, Radhe Mohan

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Objectives

Hypofractionated radiotherapy requires reliable cell survival models for doses much higher than the standard 2 Gy, for which the linear-quadratic (LQ) model is not applicable. We developed an alternative approach applicable to both low doses and high doses used in hypofractionated treatments and radiobiological experiments.

Approach.

We combined a standard microdosimetric technique with a recently introduced non-LQ cell survival model. Our formulation accounts for cell damage by multi-track events involving any number of particles. This is necessary for modelling cell survival at therapeutic doses. We characterise each cell type by the size  of the sensitive volume (SV) and …

Some Nonparametric Tests For High-Dimensional And Functional Data, Bilol Banerjee

Doctoral Theses

The advancement of information technology and sciences over the last few decades has facilitated the collection, storage and analysis of huge data sets. Many of these data sets contain observations having large number of features, and in some cases, this number is comparable to or even much larger than the sample size. Many traditional statistical methods cannot be meaningfully used in such situations. We develop some inferential tools for such high dimensional data. In particular, we consider the two-sample problem and the problem of testing spherical symmetry of a multivariate distributions. We construct some nonparametric tests in these contexts and …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Phase-change materials (PCMs) are essential for achieving tunability of metasurfaces. However, they frequently face limitations in the long-wave infrared range because of their lossy behavior. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a thermally tunable mid-infrared nanocavity resonance from coupled surface plasmon-phonon polaritons that are supported within a trilayer structure of metal-PCM layer-polar dielectric (Au-VO2-SiC). The top metal structures configure the Fabry-Perot cavity resonance near 840 cm−1 (11.9 µm), which is sensitively tunable and reversible with small changes in the VO2 refractive index ∆n near below its insulator-to-metal phase transition temperature where the loss is small. The maximum resonance shift of 7.7 cm−1 …

Higher Learning Research Communications

This study examines the effects of parental support on learning engagement and the mediating roles of self-regulated learning (SRL) in mathematics online learning environments. A sample of 112 undergraduate students from the mathematics departments of two public universities in Malaysia participated in the study. We analyzed the data using descriptive analysis and partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM), and the study findings indicate that parental support significantly predicts online self-regulated learning (OSRL). In addition, OSRL is a significant predictor of students’ engagement. The results also suggest that OSRL fully mediates the relationship between parental support and learning engagement. However, …

“Silent Is Not Actually Silent”: An Investigation Of Toxicity On Bug Report Discussion, Mia Mohammad Imran, Jaydeb Sarker Jul 2025

“Silent Is Not Actually Silent”: An Investigation Of Toxicity On Bug Report Discussion, Mia Mohammad Imran, Jaydeb Sarker

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Toxicity in bug report discussions poses significant challenges to the collaborative dynamics of open-source software development. Bug reports are crucial for identifying and resolving defects, yet their inherently problem-focused nature and emotionally charged context make them susceptible to toxic interactions. This study explores toxicity in GitHub bug reports through a qualitative analysis of 203 bug threads, including 81 toxic ones. Our findings reveal that toxicity frequently arises from misaligned perceptions of bug severity and priority, unresolved frustrations with tools, and lapses in professional communication. These toxic interactions not only derail productive discussions but also reduce the likelihood of actionable outcomes, …

Llput: Investigating Large Language Models For Bug Report-Based Input Generation, Alif Al Hasan, Subarna Saha, Mia Mohammad Imran, Tarannum Shaila Zaman

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Failure-inducing inputs play a crucial role in diagnosing and analyzing software bugs. Bug reports typically contain these inputs, which developers extract to facilitate debugging. Since bug reports are written in natural language, prior research has leveraged various Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques for automated input extraction. With the advent of Large Language Models (LLMs), an important research question arises: how effectively can generative LLMs extract failure-inducing inputs from bug reports? In this paper, we propose LLPut, a technique to empirically evaluate the performance of three open-source generative LLMs-LLaMA, Qwen, and Qwen-Coder-in extracting relevant inputs from bug reports. We conduct an …

A Multi-Scale Numerical Analysis Of Wave Propagation Through Coastal Vegetation Using Proteus & Xbeach, Cole M. Statler Jul 2025

A Multi-Scale Numerical Analysis Of Wave Propagation Through Coastal Vegetation Using Proteus & Xbeach, Cole M. Statler

LSU Master's Theses

Coastal vegetation attenuates waves in the nearshore zone and protects shorelines from storm surge and wave action. It also traps nutrients and sediment, and participates in the formation of land over longer time scales. These features of vegetation make it a common component of nature-based engineering projects. Interaction of water waves and flow with vegetation, however, can involve unsteady and turbulent flow, non-hyrdostatic pressure effects, and air entrainment that can hinder the use of simple parametric representations of vegetation drag. XBeach, a one- and two-dimensional production model applies reduced-order methods, prioritizing computational efficiency. Vegetation is represented in XBeach as a …

Essays On Stablecoins’ Stability, Ravi Joshi Jul 2025

Essays On Stablecoins’ Stability, Ravi Joshi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, I present three independent essays that contribute to the literature on stablecoins, the run-on stablecoin (Terra), and the information narrative surrounding the run. The first essay offers a comprehensive overview of the stablecoin ecosystem, the structural frictions that challenge peg maintenance, and the evolving regulatory landscape governing stablecoin issuance and use. In the second essay, I investigate the collapse of the TerraUSD (UST) algorithmic stablecoin and provide evidence that the collapse mimicked a run by demonstrating liquidity shortages on centralized exchanges. I show that Terra’s arbitrage mechanism broke on May 7, 2022, and that sustained price deviations …

Estimating Galactic Structure Using Galactic Binaries Resolved By Space-Based Gravitational Wave Observatories, Shao-Dong Zhao, Xue-Hao Zhang, Soumya Mohanty, Màrius Josep Fullana I Alfonso, Yu-Xiao Liu, Qung-Ying Xie

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Space-based gravitational wave detectors, such as the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) and Taiji, will observe GWs from O(108) galactic binary systems, allowing a completely unobscured view of the Milky Way structure. While previous studies have established theoretical expectations based on idealized data-analysis methods that use the true catalog of sources, we present an end-to-end analysis pipeline for inferring galactic structure parameters based on the detector output alone. We employ the GBSIEVER algorithm to extract GB signals from LISA Data Challenge data and develop a maximum likelihood approach to estimate a bulge-disk galactic model using the resolved GBs. We introduce …

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM) poses a significant challenge in oncology due to its high incidence and poor prognosis in unresectable cases. Current treatments, including surgical resection, systemic chemotherapy, and liver-directed therapies, often fail to effectively target hypoxic tumor regions, which are inherently more resistant to these interventions. This review examines the potential of a novel therapeutic strategy combining irreversible electroporation (IRE) ablation and Clostridium novyi-nontoxic (C. novyi-NT) bacterial therapy. IRE is a non-thermal tumor ablation technique that uses high-voltage electric pulses to create permanent nanopores in cell membranes, leading to cell death while preserving surrounding structures, and …

Newtonian Fractional-Dimension Gravity And The Mass-Dimension Field Equation, Gabriele U. Varieschi Jul 2025

Newtonian Fractional-Dimension Gravity And The Mass-Dimension Field Equation, Gabriele U. Varieschi

Physics Faculty Works

We resume our analysis of Newtonian Fractional-Dimension Gravity (NFDG), an alternative gravitational model which does not require the Dark Matter (DM) paradigm. We add three more galaxies (NGC 6946, NGC 3198, NGC 2841) to the catalog of those studied with NFDG methods. Once again, NFDG can successfully reproduce the observed rotation curves by using a variable fractional dimension D (R), as was done for nine other galaxies previously studied with these methods. In addition, we introduce a mass-dimension field equation for our model, which is capable of deriving the fractional mass-dimension Dm (R) from first principles, as opposed to the …

Asymptotic Behavior Of Evolution Equations Via Spectral Theory Of Functions On The Half Line, Sums Of Commuting Operators And Evolution Semigroups, Minh Nguyen, Vu Trong Luong

Faculty Scholarship

In this paper we give a survey of recent developments in the spectral theory of bounded functions on the half line, and its applications to study the asymptotic behavior of solutions of evolution equations of the form , where A(t) is periodic in t. For the applications we consider spectra of the evolution semigroups associated with the evolution equations in various spectral invariant function spaces and their generators. The main results presented in the paper are concerned with the existence and uniqueness within decaying functions with specific spectral properties. These asymptotic behaviors are related to the Katznelson–Tzafriri Theorem and Massera …
